Rangers Recap: Rangers Choke, Allow Leafs to make Comeback Win in Overtime
Tonight's loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs hurts. It may just hurt more than any other loss this season because they New York Rangers should have won this game in regulation and continue on with their quest for one of the last few playoff spots in the Eastern Conference. Instead, they let up a late goal and next an overtime wraparound. Unfortunately, this team never makes things easy on its fans and now will have to pretty much win out, or at least win six of seven in order to make the playoffs. It is going to be extremely difficult now.
Midway through the first period, P.A. Parenteau's spin-around shot beat Leafs goaltender Jonas Gustavsson low to give the Blueshirts the 1-0 advantage. Brandon Dubinsky then followed that up with a beauty of a goal with the final seconds ticking off of the clock in the period. Brandon made his way through the defense, made a quick move around the net, and then stuffed the puck past the goal line to give the Rangers a two goal lead heading into intermission.
That lead would not last long, though, as John Mitchell was left wide open in the slot where he easily put home his sixth of the season. There is no excuse for the lack of coverage on that play. At this stage of the season, you just cannot afford to make mental mistakes like that. That would not be the only mental mistake of the night for the Rangers, however.
In the third period, the Blueshirts were doing a great job of holding the lead with a couple of strong penalty kills and a solid forecheck. That is until Tomas Kaberle flung a puck at the net from the goal line which somehow beat Lundqvist to the post to tie the game with just over three minutes remaining in regulation. This time, there is no scapegoat that us fans can come up with for Henrik allowing that goal. He was having a great game up until that point, but he must stop that puck. This is not the first time Lundqvist has been guilty of allowing a tying goal of that nature in his career.
Nikolai Kulemin's wraparound ended this game quickly in overtime, 39 seconds in to be exact, and no one is at fault for that goal other than Chris Drury and Wade Redden. First, Redden was caught sliding on the side of the net allowing Kulemin to easily go behind the net on one side. On the other side, where Kulemin stuffed the puck in, Chris Drury watched and gave a half-a$$ pokecheck that wasn't going to do anything. Henrik had no chance of stopping that, even though he almost did, and it left Hank in frustration, slamming his stick on the glass when exiting the rink.
The Rangers did not play a bad game tonight, so do not take this postgame recap as a complete rant. What was said above was simply steam being letting off after watching this hockey club drop a must-win game because of foolish mental mistakes. They cannot be satisfied with just a single point tonight. It was a game that needed to be won and they could not do that, which only hurts themselves.
Anders Eriksson, replacing a benched Matt Gilroy, played well when put onto the ice. Granted he did not play all that much, but when he did, the veteran blue-liner was sharp. As for Parenteau, as long as he is re-signed this summer, he will have a great chance of making this Rangers team out of training camp next year. Parenteau has been remarkable whenever called upon this season.
Sean Avery left the game in the second period after going into the boards hard with Luke Schenn in an attempt to beat out an icing call. If Avery is out long term, this team will be hurting because besides Lundqvist, Sean has been the best player for the Rangers lately. As head coach John Tortorella said, it was a "tough break".
As I said above, the Rangers will most likely have to win six out of their final seven games in order to make the playoffs. The Bruins and Thrashers won today while the Flyers lost, meaning the Rangers remain five points out of playoff position in tenth place. Their next game will be on Tuesday against the Islanders in Nassau.

This team has obtained 5 meaningless points over the last 4 days
Which will only hurt this team’s chances of getting a top lottery pick. I swear, I can’t take this anymore. This team has reached a new level of stupidity.

yes, you are right they are 5 points that will end up only hurting us in the end and without them we would be tied for 3rd right now w fla, car and only 3 ahead of toronto for 2nd, but that doesnt matter now since it’s done. all they do is stop making runs to get close and then shitting the pot because all they are really doing is costing us a top pick while not really threatening to be a playoff team. rest of this road trip will be very interesting as the next 3 games are against teams 4 and 5 points behind us

You Play to Win the Game
Until you are officially eliminated from playoff contention, you continue to play your hardest.

Parenteau for a secure job in 2011
All this guy does is score and play hard when he gets recalled, I hope he’s on the team in 2011, or playing full time in the NHL somewhere. he deserves a job already….when R&R do not.
"Fantasy, reality, science Fiction. Which is which? Who can tell?"
all he does is score? he has 2G and 3A in 15 games. interestingly enough his two goals have come in 2 of the 3 first games after callups this year.

Not to mention his 3.99 GAON/60, which would put him dead last among all players with at least 15 games and at least 5 min. ice time. This also comes against some of easiest competition around.
Quad-A player or 13th forward, good for a spark, and nothing more.

about p.a.
i agree evey time this kid comes up he produces and plays his heart out i say he should be on next seasons roster i,m sick of seeing voros already p.a. can be a player ..
I just don’t understand this team. You’re on the outside of the playoffs looking in and the chances of overtaking the teams above you grow slimmer by the day. So you call up Anders Eriksson and bench a defender. And that defender’s name isn’t Redden. Huh? Eriksson isn’t the answer to the Rangers problems. Gilroy might not be either but I’m willing to give him more of chance than Torts has…
How does Wade Redden continue to play for this team? I have no faith in Sather or Torts. The blind leading the stupid…
Thankfully, opening day gets closer every day.
I can see it now...
they’ll either end up 2 pts out of the 8th spot, or tied and the 8th seed’s got the tiebreaker.
a-holes….

Ummm...
NYRBlogger..what game were you watching that you can say with a straight face that the Rangers didn’t play a bad game tonight? And how does THIS loss hurt more than any of the other crap performances this team has perpetrated against sub-par teams this season? I respect your opinion, don’t get me wrong. However letting a team with the 2nd worse defense in the league hang around is unacceptable even for this team. No killer instinct. Dubinsky floating around the ice all game, la de-da. His one goal doesn’t excuse him from his absolutely atrocious defensive play. Parenteau’s goal was a gift. However let him stay, gift or no gift the kid friggen scores when he’s up here. Which is more than I can say for the rest of these bums. Roszival has skates made of cement. Gaborik did his best impression of David Copperfield last night. Jokinen is…well a joke. About the only thing Prospal has been able to do successfully lately is check an opposing player into the boards for a penalty. I love Henrik and he deserves better but how many times…how many TIMES is he gonna give up a WEAK goal from practically behind the redline cause he failed to hug the post. Does Benoit Allaire watch these games? Staal was the best player on the ice last night. This is exactly what this team is, an inconsistent mess with a coach who has NO idea what to do except to continue to treat the media and fans like jerks. I have hope though, we all do. As long as Torts is here, this team will continue to frustrate all of us to the extent that maybe something will change with the direction of this organization. He has taken a mediocre team and incredibly made it less than that. Hockey is different here. lol
Rozival Gets An A?
Does Torterella not see that Rozival sucks and is dragging us down to the depths of Hell? And Rozival gets named the alternate captain and not Duby, who is one our few bright spots. He also benches Gaborik who really is one of the only reasons why we are still up for a playoff spot, but does not bench the double R (Redden and Rozival), who are the two reasons why we are not currently in a playoff spot. Dubinsky deserved that A. As for Lundqvist, he CAN NOT let two goals be scored from BEHIND the net when we our fighting to get into the playoffs. The last one was also that idiot Reddens fault as well, but those are saves we need.

Dude torts is a horrible coach I wasn’t shocked seeing the A o Rosie. He’s been nothing but a headache for us ranger fans. He cant develop rookies with them either benched or playing 5 mintues, the guy can’t keep a line together for more than 2 mins, and he sits our best player. Torts is ruining this team with his system his mentalitly and his attitude. I’m telling you guys he should be on the chopping block as much as sather the guy has not done anything but hurt this team.
