The NHL Eastern Conference: Comedy? Or Tragedy??
C'mon folks! You've gotta be kidding me?!!!?
This is like watching an old 3 Stooges Movie...Atlanta, Boston, New York as the "stars", with Philly and Montreal ready to step in as guest stars!
Monday night, when both Boston and Atlanta could have distanced themselves just a bit from the NYR, Boston manages to lose to Buffalo by a 3 - 2 count, and Atlanta gets dominated by Carolina by a score of 4 - 1.
Boston could have moved into a dead heat with both Philly and MTL at 82 points with a win. Atlanta could have tied Boston if they'd won and Boston, as they ended up doing, lost.
Florida had a chance to move within 2 of the NYR, and they managed to lose to Nashville, 3 - 2.
Nobody really wants those 7th and 8th seed spots.
"Here - you take it."
"No no no.....I insist - it's yours...."
"I couldn't, really! Please - after you."
The best part may well be that whichever of these comics manages to secure those last 2 spots - they're going to get dominated in round 1. That, of course, is when the comedy turns into a real tragedy......
The standings:
| 6 | Philadelphia Flyers | ATL | 76 | 38 | 32 | 6 | 82 | |||||||
| 7 | Montréal Canadiens | NE | 76 | 37 | 31 | 8 | 82 | |||||||
| 8 | Boston Bruins | NE | 75 | 34 | 29 | 12 | 80 | |||||||
| 9 | Atlanta Thrashers | SE | 76 | 33 | 31 | 12 | 78 | |||||||
| 10 | New York Rangers | ATL | 75 | 33 | 32 | 10 | 76 | |||||||
| 11 | Carolina Hurricanes | SE | 76 | 32 | 35 | 9 | 73 |
|

Edit/Update: Appears that Andrew Gross has similar (though not necessarily as "comedic") thoughts:
If the Rangers do make the playoffs this season, it will not be so much because of Henrik Lundqvist, as coach John Tortorella has now guaranteed twice (after Saturday’s 3-2 overtime loss at Toronto and again after yesterday’s practice) but because the other Eastern Conference playoff contenders the Rangers are battling are as mind-numbingly inconsistent as they are.

Change a few things around, and we could re-run it this year

For Boston, that one is on the coach for playing Tim Thomas and leaving him in after those two awful goals he gave in the first. Yes I know he had a shutout over the weekend but with as bad as he was on the first two you pull him. same thing happened to them vs nj two monday’s ago when he started thomas gives up 3, pulls him for rask and they lose 3-2.
only factual issue is florida could have moved within 3 not 2, but choked as usual w 3 min left and lost in OT so they are 4 back.
It really is sad that it is that bad because all the teams in the West that have nothing to play for like Stl, Dal, Ana, Min are all playing better than these teams in 7-10 in the East and the 80-81 points they have (if ana holds the 2 goal 3rd period lead) would make them contenders not 9 points back. How pissed would you be as a fan in calgary or colorado or la if their team ends up w 90-95 points and misses while one or more of these jokes makes it with 85?
It will get even worse tomorrow/later today if the Isles beat us, toronto beats atl, nj beats bos and tb wins. those results all at once would help the ranger chances of getting in the playoffs and improving their draft pick, pitiful.

i guess this all means if by some luck we do manage to avoid being handed the 8th spot we should pick no lower than 9th in the draft, but it is going to be hard to avoid it if this keeps up.

great post. oldschool banter style.
and a good one by jim too…i’m afraid of a repeat of last year with the “relatively easy” sched the boys have left and the game in hand, still 14 pts up for grabs…this worries me.

Maybe with Slats’ propensity for cigars, we need the Marx Brothers?

“That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve EVER heard…..”

bottom line?
its set up for the craps to win the cup this year just like cindy did last year 2 of buttmans poster boys it went from gretzky to lemiex almost lindros to many head shots was his down fall and worthless hextall as his goalie past it on to yzerman and now a dirty punk russian do you really think if the rangers get the 8th seed that they are going to get a fair shot at the series if anybody breaths on ovie there will be a penalty lets see avery hoisting the cup or poster boy ovie hmmmm lets face it the craps have been crowned by mr. buttman next chump in line please ..
Ovechkin is not a “dirty punk” he is a world class player that plays on the edge. Yeah he crossed the line a couple times big freaking deal Im sure if Avery made that hit on Campbell or stuck out a slew foot we would all be here defending him. Ovechkin is by far the best player in the world and might be the best player ever with the skill set he has. But what the fact is Ovechkin is the whole package and you cant deny that.

i cant believe u can honestly say that Ovie is a punk. Its not his fault that everyone else in the league plays with half a heart and half his size.. the guy is walking wall… 235 solid.. idk if u have ever played hockey in ur life lohaus but its a game of split second decisions and actions….. do u think a guy of his caliber would purposely try to but his career at risk… HE is the best player in the world hands down….
I am a true ranger fan first and foremost… but i am a hockey fan and i do own a OV jersey since he came to this league
