PLEASE SATHER THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX AND TRADE HENRIK NOW!!

Note By Joe Fortunato: I don't like the way the convorsation is going here, so I'm shutting down the comments. I haven't seen this many personal attacks since that Islanders fan came over last year.

With so many teams desperate for some help in net, we could pull in a Kings (no pun intended) ransom right now.Pull the trigger, we can turn this franchise around in one fell swoop. Even though its not going to be popular on this site I have my reasons why trading Henrik is a great idea. I dont have time to jump into it right now (I will do a write up later) but the main reason is I just don't think this guy has the mentality of an elite playoff goaltender, he always seems to fold under pressure. And please don't bring up the Gold medal win 4 years ago because that Henrik is long gone IMO.

Wow you just tore Henrik Lundqvist up.

He has his shaky games and he would pull a kings ransom true, but the team has been getting progressively worse and Lundqvist still wins games. =/

get off this site, take any Rangers gear you have & donate it to Garden of Dreams, and go enjoy a miserable life as an Islander fan or any other team that will never have a goalie on Henrik’s level.

P.S. 2006 was SOOOOO long ago! Remember when people were using iPods??? LOLOL what a stone age!!

I guess you are correct. Its not like Henrik had a 3-1 lead in a playoff series last year and choked it away.

by coleko on Mar 3, 2010 3:01 PM EST up reply actions

It's not like Henrik was playing against the best offensive team in the league,

behind a roster of players that probably never belonged in the playoffs anyway. This post reeks of a cry for attention. This will be the last I add to the discussion, because I don’t think you are worth anybody’s time here. These are the kind of posts that really should not be dignified with a response and on that note, see ya.

Cuz Hank actually choked it away because the Rangers impeccable offense had them in every game.

Don’t you remember the late season pushes every year since 06-07 just to make the playoffs? He would have such incredible months at the end that it was ridiculous.

Collectively the Rangers failed against Washington……from Hanks glove to Redden on Federovs series winning goal. To blame Hank, you must also relaize he was the reason they got there too….so who do you replace him with and what do you get for him….arguably he is one of the top 5 goalies in the league….maybe top 3….do you surmize his replacement would be better?

by earthworm on Mar 4, 2010 4:51 PM EST up reply actions

Ok answer me this, if a goalie cant win you a series when you are up 3-1 whats the point of having him? You guys are right he doesn’t have a great team in front of him but he has shown he cant win on his own, so why not build an actual team.

by coleko on Mar 3, 2010 3:14 PM EST reply actions

I don’t think you can build an entire team off of just Gaborik and Lunqvist. San Jose has tons of great players and haven’t gone deep in the playoffs yet. Prior to this year, Washington has tons of stars but they fail on their defense and lack of a real quality goaltender. Now Washington is in it but there is obviously a powerhouse of offense on that team. I honestly don’t think trading just Lundqvist and Gaborik would build up a team that can go all the way.

You’re right that this team is far from a cup as is but Lundqvist is the best thing this team has. His contract is even reasonable at that. We’re held back by garbage contracts by others and trading Lunqvist will still leave us with these horrible contracts. Management would much rather keep Lundqvist on the team when he plays well and brings people to the games as a city favorite than trade for others who’s chemistry here might be abysmal. Just a quick opinion.

the Rangers problem was scoring goals.

Out of those 4 games they lost in that series..only one did they score more then 2 goals.

That’s not Hank’s fault.

Exactly

I am not saying give him away, but you could get a high return.

by coleko on Mar 3, 2010 3:38 PM EST up reply actions

but you are arguing he is part of the problem of which i disagree. much different arguments in terms of what you could get vs needing to be dealt because he has slipped or is overrated which is the essence of your statements.

by Michael Gleich on Mar 3, 2010 3:41 PM EST up reply actions

I think he is over-rated but not the biggest problem by any means. I just think we can get a lot for him and get someone to do a lot more for a lot cheaper.

by coleko on Mar 3, 2010 4:13 PM EST up reply actions

how is he over rated? what other goalie is currently single handedly getting his team a chance at the playoffs? He is mauled by forwards from other teams because of our "manly " defensemen , he plays for a city that scrutinizes his every mistake and he is all alone in this battle. Yes he has off nights and sometimes plays downright awful but he’s human and he makes mistakes. More often than not though he picks up the slack for the team. So tell me who can be better than him, and be cheaper?

Do you believe in miracles?!!?!?!?!?

by polishBLUE on Mar 3, 2010 4:23 PM EST reply actions

man you’re right… we already have R&R sisters (aka almost a perfect defence) so we only have a few pieces of the puzzle missing… Trading Hank will solve everything.. lol

by SweNYRfan on Mar 3, 2010 4:29 PM EST up reply actions

Ok, on current pace when do we have a chance to contend?

by coleko on Mar 3, 2010 4:38 PM EST reply actions

perhaps in 2-3 years depending on the prospects we already have.
Kreider, Stephan, Grachev among others will evolve in to great players.. great enough? we’ll see. And during this period we need to find a way to get rid of the BAD players (Rosi, Redden for example) and replace them with some good Free agents or making a package deal.

Trading away our superstars (hank, gabby) is just insane. We have our superstars and need 1 maybe 2 more (at least a great playmaking center for gabby). and then build around them with good solid players.

But in order for all this to happen as it should then sather have to go or make a giant self makeover.

by SweNYRfan on Mar 3, 2010 4:52 PM EST up reply actions

great idea!!!! let’s trade Hank
maybe we can trade him for Bobby Holik and/or Theo Fluery

Reckless and pathetic statements like this, is a sad way to get attention.

by NYR94 on Mar 3, 2010 4:59 PM EST reply actions

I cant show you guys a time machine but I think Hank love will go away with a couple more playoff flops, and then I will Repost this and smile.

by coleko on Mar 3, 2010 5:00 PM EST reply actions

The playoff flops aren’t because of Henrik… it’s because of the team in front of him. If you can’t see that, I don’t know what else anyone can say. This team hasn’t been playoff-worthy for years, what do you expect when we squeak into a playoff seed at the last couple of games, a cup run? Seriously… I don’t even know what you expect from your post.

by Kritikal on Mar 3, 2010 5:14 PM EST up reply actions

I am not saying if we put in another goalie it will make all the difference, what I am saying is that I think Henriks trade value out weighs his actual value. We are probably not a playoff team without Henrik, but with Henrik we are an easy first round exit. So it doesnt make any sense. Trade Henrik get pieces to build and actual TEAM.

by coleko on Mar 3, 2010 5:20 PM EST up reply actions

blame game

This is like people in Boston who blamed every Red Sox failure on Ted Williams. The big problem with this is that fans often misplace this blame on the stars who are part of the solution, not part of the problem. You’ve got at least 2-3 horrible signings by Sather and you want to trade away one of the few things he’s gotten right? I do understand the whole sell high theory (Prospal), but I think this goes too far.
I guess stars like Hank should be held to a higher standard, but I’m firmly of the opinon that the Caps-Rangers series last year only went to 7 games because of Hank. They were so incredibly outclassed for that entire series, but he was able to steal several games by himself.
Its not like Hank has a playoff failure rate like Nabakov. You’re right, they do need to build an actual TEAM, but finding an elite goaltender is a very tough thing to do. How many goalies out there would you rather have than Hank? How many are better right now?

by NastyNate82 on Mar 3, 2010 7:11 PM EST reply actions

by John Mjr on Mar 3, 2010 7:53 PM EST reply actions

You honestly believe that Henrik is to blame for all of the Rangers’ post-season losses?
You honestly believe that Henrik is overrated, and chokes in pressure situations?
You honestly believe that trading Henrik will help the franchise move forward?
You honestly believe that having Henrik on this team points to an easy first round exit?
You honestly believe that Henrik isn’t a elite goaltender?

I don’t know how to respond to this.

(Just to point some things out. Henrik’s gold medal came in his rookie season. You think “that Henrik is long gone”, which means you think Henrik has played his best hockey in his rookie season and only his rookie season. Lundqvist is a goalie that thrives under pressure. You said “he can’t win on his own”, yet he single-handedly has given the Rangers the opportunity to play in the post-season for every year he has been in the league. More importantly, he gives the Rangers respect.)

hey hes thinking outside of the box.. i just completely disagree..

i think last yar without hank we probably had the worst team in the nhl. yet we still brought the capitals to 7 games. hank completely stole 2 of those games. we should have lost in 4 or 5 really..

and whos going to play goal if we trade him? i would understand maybe if we had a good young goalie like halak or rask or quick or something.. but this is just silly. what we need to do is shed those 3 bad contracts and move on.. bring up those young kids and bring in a big name FA thats still in his prime.

blaming anything on henrik is just absurd. just think of it this way. instead of r&r and drury we had chara volchenkov and marleau. than wed be a cup contender.

Its games like this last one that show the nastiness of Hank too

one might see a 5-4 game, but the reality was the offense had narcolepsy in the Pens zone and Hank faced barrage after barrage of shots.

Also, 2 goals were own goals (as probably 50% of the goals against Hank are).

Trading Hank to build a team is counter-productive.

I understand the principal of blowing it all up an starting over…but the thing is…all of these good teams are no where with no goalie.

Lets wait say..4-5 years before we look at this. If the Rangers still suck…Hank’s still good..sure, get what you can.

They would not nearly get the value for this guy now. IF they had a competent defense around him (for a team that’s supposedly preached defense..they’re horrible at teaching it) who knows how good the team could really be.

They don’t score enough goals either.
