New York Rangers Stand Pat at Trade Deadline

Despite a storm of names swirling around this team all morning and over the last few days, the New York Rangers chose to make only one move today, a minor league deal sending Jordan Owens to the Detroit Red Wings for Kris Newbury.

It is almost shocking that Glen Sather did not make a move because he has in every season since becoming GM of the Rangers, regardless of their place in the standings. The Rangers had one big move in their sights today, and that was to acquire defenseman Sheldon Souray on Edmonton, but he was hospitalized in just the last few hours with an infection in his hand, a result of a surgery he had just a few weeks ago. That was going to be the Rangers big deal today, but the injury threw Sather completely off and he chose to not make a move at all. The Rangers also reportedly made an offer for Tomas Kaberle of the Toronto Maple Leafs

When looking back on it though, Sather did make his big move a month ago when he acquired Olli Jokinen and Brandon Prust for Ales Kotalik and Chris Higgins. Any other year that would have been the deadline move, so in reality, the Rangers didn't not do anything this season. That move was made before the Olympic break which was actually the first of the two trade deadlines this season. All the big moves were made then, including Kovalchuk and Phaneuf.

As a side note, this was the most boring trade deadline day ever. TSN started their annual "Tradecentre" show at 8am and will be broadcasting through 6pm. There has been absolutely nothing and how the analysts haven't strangled each other out of boredom is beyond me. Their show today has been an absolute joke, and fellow writer Joe Alianello described it like Christmas morning, saving the biggest box for last only to find out it's clothes or something stupid. Loved when TSN announced, "Oh! Oh! Oh! We got a trade!....Joey Macdonald for a 7th round pick." It's time to sign off the air guys.

There is still a chance more deals will be announced in the next hour but it is believed to be that the Rangers are done and will not announce any moves. We all wanted deals to be made but perhaps not making any was for the better.

It’s not over until Bob McKenzie says so. Rangers actually have a deal waiting to be announced right now, something small though. For a depth d-man.

I feel like we should just let the D be as it is, and let the young guys get some experience before the season is over.

I’m just very thankful for Souray’s hand infection. That was a disaster waiting to happen.

getting rid of rozi or reds would have made for a wonderful day but all and all im satisfied dubi calli or any or young player for that matter was dealt for a old rental player.

we did get olli and prust before the olympics…hopefully they find a way to sign olli come july.

Kris Newbury lol

On February 10, 2007, Newbury ended up in a fight with Ronald Petrovicky, of the Pittsburgh Penguins. He took several punches to the head and was knocked to the ice, giving him a concussion, which caused him to miss the remainder of the season.

ok guys hear me out its sounds crazy but think about it by the the time we become a good team wth our young guys and picks hank will be to old we should of traded him for someone like kane from chicago with some picks even gab could of been traded cause were going nowhere with what we have and by the time our young guys come up those players are to old and let dubi go hes not that good at best hes a third line center 15 goal scorer so now we suffer try to make the playoffs get bitched slapped by the wash pitts phill for what to lose again and again this trying to make the playoffs or just getting in is getting old lets become a contender where we get respect from the hocky world cause were are a jokeright now i feel like when gretzky called the devils a mickey mouse team thats what we have become

by nytrueblue on Mar 3, 2010 4:41 PM EST reply actions

wow, please repost with punctuation.

by WalkerNYRanger on Mar 3, 2010 4:45 PM EST up reply actions

Translation:
“Ok guys, hear me out. I know this sounds crazy, but if you think about it, by the time we become a good team and our young players develop, Henrik will be past his prime. Therefore, I think we should trade him for a player like Kane from Chicago (possibly include some picks) that will be in his prime when our younger players develop.

We should let Dubi go because he’s not that good, a 3rd-line center at beast who can only score 15 goals. Instead, we will suffer trying to make the playoffs, get bitch-slapped by Washing, Pittsburgh, or Philly, and continue to lose every year just trying to make the playoffs.

It’s getting old, we need to become a contender which will earn respect from the hockey world because we are a joke right now. It’s like when Gretzky called the Devils a ‘Mickey Mouse’ team; that’s what we have become."

Rough translation, added in a few lines for cohesion. You’re welcome.

It’s 6 or 7 depending on the # of games.

Brashear and Erikkson will both be over the limit and count. As will Dandenault, although he’s been injured for quite a while.
If Lisin is sent down, I don’t think he goes over that limit.
Voros will, if sent down.

Still not an issue.

Totally fine with this

Said this morning on the first thread we would stand pat and so it is.

No one wanted the double R’s without some of our young core and the jury isn’t out on them and nor should the base. Love their heart. Love the way they wear the jersey.

Our young D ain’t ready for prime time on their defending in front of the King, so any move of a vet D had to be offset with a replacement and that wasn’t happening. We must keep shots at around 30 if Henri is to survive into his 30’s.

I am glad Sather didn’t deal just to deal and despite whether we make the playoffs or not, I enjoy watching EC, Drury, Cally, Dubi, Avery, Staal, Prospal and like the enrgy Olli and Prust have added. No let’s just go for it and pull for our young core to play with heart and advance and not tank as so many on this site are wishing for. Once a quitter always a quitter.

No trade was going to make a difference and if cally and Dubi start to score then having Redden and Rozi for a while longer isn’t that bad.

Let’s hope MDZ and Gabby get healthy and we get into the playoffs and give my 4 guaranteed nights out with my buddies. It’s a house rule that I watch the playoffs at the same bar I saw every game in ‘94 and I get no argument from my lovely wife of 22 years over this very dear tradition. Nor do my 3 buddies who were there with me. Selfish as that may seem that’s where I’m coming from.

Bring on that Crybaby and the Fairy Malkin. Time to kick some Donkey ass.

( :) as always)

I can appreciate your tradition out w/ your boys for Ranger playoff games

cuz we all have them, thats the beauty of sports….the comraderie with other fans…….BUT…..In sports or anything competitive for that matter the main objective is to win. Winning is everything, dont believe that old, tired cliche’ of it’s not whether you win or lose garbage. All fans want they’re teams to win and Ranger fans are no diff. Now dont get me wrong, I am happy Sather stood pat and didnt buy any players…not that he didnt want to trust me cuz if Souray didnt have a hand infection they would be stiching up a #44 jersey for him right now and the Souray talk will pick up during the summer. Bottom line here as far as I am concerned is we should have sold, we had a few pieces to move and could have acquired picks and/or young talent cuz JUST making the playoffs isnt enough anymore even if it gets you out of your house for 4 nights with your friends……..

by giantsNYrangers on Mar 3, 2010 11:39 PM EST up reply actions

The four nights are good enough for me.

The point is nothing happened.

The point is Souray was a bad move because he is damaged goods.

My point was to those who bash Sather for the point of bashing Sather.

My point is we are rebuilding an it doesn’t happen in a flash.

My point is that athletes don’t quit and shouldn’t be called on to by their “fans”:

My point is I want them to win and want the young Rangers we have now to succeed and gain important playoff experience.

My point is no one was buying what we were selling.

My point is in order to move two players whom we happen to need in front of Henri we would have to give up on the young talent and picks you say you want. It doesn’t make any sense.

If you are going to keep yelling sell and keep hoping for loses at least come up with something original. Souray is someone elses idea. And its wrong.

This is the team we have for remainder of the season. We will gain a lot more through winning and the experience that brings, than tanking for a single draft pick.

Can anyone explain how we should go about tanking anyhow. How do you ask a pro trying to further his career not to play hard.

How can anyone watch a game and hope our core players fail.?

Let’s enjoy our team and stop worrying about our fantasy teams.

by christopherm on Mar 4, 2010 8:24 AM EST up reply actions

Ok, well alot of people want to go back to thinking that I want this team to "tank"

the rest of the season…..I made a comment once of how I would rather see this team start to build from the ground up. To do it the right way w/ young players rather than be engulfed in mediocrity and hover around the last playoff spot and not improve yr after yr. And if that involves losing games but moving towards a bright future then so be it. And we did have pieces other teams would buy. You mean to tell me that a Vinny Prospal would have no value to a team contending for a Stanley cup? Or an Ollie Jokinen? And as far as Souray, believe me no one is happier than me he wasnt acquired yesterday….thank god for his infected hand. There needs to be a REAL plan for this team moving forward cuz it’s obvious Sather’s way of doing things has not and will continue to not work. Are you really content with being in the same position yr after yr? fighting for the last 2 playoff spots to eventually..(maybe) get in only to get knocked out by a much better team? There are no moral victories in sports. You either win or you dont. Can you remember how good it felt and how happy you were back in 94’ when the Rangers won it all? I sure do. I dont know if your a Giant fan but I had a smile on my face well into april back in 07’. Every team’s goal is to win the Cup at the beginning of the season and it’s the Gm’s job to construct a team with that in mind. It boggles my mind how people can accept mediocrity. I never said anything about tanking the season Chris, I just want to improve every year and the way Sather is going about it we r not…..going out and throwing bad money after bad money to FA that dont produce and having to try to dig himself out of holes he throws himself into every offseason is wrong. Can you agree w/ that or no? Get a plan and stick to it Slats. Oh and btw…..what was your point?…..lol

by giantsNYrangers on Mar 4, 2010 9:07 AM EST up reply actions

Can anyone explain how we should go about tanking anyhow.

A team that got a stretch of 10 points in 13 games in November? A team that’s got a stretch of 7 points in 11 games in Jan-Feb? I think they can figure it out.

And if you think a single top 5 pick isn’t better than a mid-first + playoff experience, let’s ask this:

2009 – rather have Matt Duchense or Chris Kreider?
2008 – rather have Drew Doughty or Del Zotto?
2007 – Out of fairness, I’ll skip this one. Still a class with Kane, JVR, and Gagner (ok, he was 6th).
2006 – rather have Jonathan Toews or Bobby Sanguinetti?

Yeah, there’s something to be said about playoff experience, but other than AA, Gilroy and MDZ, they all got playoff experience last year.

As I said all along....

and now confirmed by Brooks – the whole SOURAY thing was smoke and mirrors.

The Blueshirts never had any intention of inquiring about Edmonton defenseman Sheldon Souray. Neither David Booth nor Nathan Horton was available from Florida. And as Sather never had any intention of exchanging young assets for short-term help, there were no moves at the big-league level for the first deadline day since 2001.
