Rangers News: It All Breaks Right For the Rangers When They Don't Play

UNIONDALE, NY - MARCH 30: The New York Rangers celebrate their 4-3 win over the New York Islanders at the Nassau Coliseum on March 30, 2010 in Uniondale, New York. (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

Things could not have gone any better for the New York Rangers tonight. Boston was shutout by Florida at home (looks like Florida relishing the "spoiler role", Rangers will need to keep that in mind Saturday), the Islanders blew out the Flyers at the Coliseum (perhaps the Flyers got bit by rats in the locker room?), and the Washington Capitals have defeated the Atlanta Thrashers, 2-1 at the Verizon Center.

So the Rangers remain  four points behind Boston, and two points behind Atlanta, with a game at hand on the Bruins, and two games at hand on the Thrashers.

Anybody else see the irony in the fact that we need to root pretty heavily for the Caps the next two weeks so that the Rangers can get into the playoffs and more than likely play the Caps?

After rooting for the Islanders and Capitals tonight, I need a long hot shower, and some of that de-lousing powder from Shawshank Redemption.

Now we just have to hope the Rangers can do as well on a gameday as they did on their day off.

We can get all the help in the world, but we still need to win our games. Hopefully the Rangers will take care of that.

If the Rangers win tomorrow, they’re assured of gaining ground on either Philly or Montreal, as they play each other in Philly tomorrow night.

by Joe1969 on Apr 1, 2010 10:46 PM EDT reply actions

wait…you mean you want them to make the post season?

by earthworm on Apr 1, 2010 10:47 PM EDT reply actions

if it’s to play the caps, I guess not. but if they can work they’re way up far enough to play the Devils, yeah, that would be fun.

by Joe1969 on Apr 1, 2010 10:48 PM EDT up reply actions

to play the devils they are likely going to have to end up 5 or 6 as i think buffalo will end up 2nd, but it is very close 2-4.

by Michael Gleich on Apr 1, 2010 10:50 PM EDT up reply actions

flip side is tomorrow they play tampa who just took it to pitt last night in a very rare display in the times i have seen in that they played a very defensive game and if they manage to beat us tomorrow their chances are as good as ours of getting in. Nobody seems to want this thing.

problem is never know what tampa team will show up.

How are you folks liking Olli Jokinen so far? I bet he’s better than Kotalik

by M F on Apr 1, 2010 10:49 PM EDT reply actions

he’s better because he is gone at season’s end and kots has two more years, so win by default?

What about Prust? He was solid in an energy role with the Flamers

by M F on Apr 1, 2010 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions

prust is loved because he plays hard and he fights.

by Michael Gleich on Apr 1, 2010 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions

huge game for the flames tomorrow. think they win in colorado? also even if they do will it matter cause rough finish?

by Michael Gleich on Apr 1, 2010 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I WANTED to like Jokinen...

…but see why he lost favor with some of his former teammates, fans. The guy has the tools, a surprisingly physical element to his game, but is not committed to the defensive aspect of the game and/or consistent shifts.

I give the full disclaimer that this is based on opinion alone, but I’ve always found the Swedish/Finnish players the most well rounded in all aspects of the game…terrific 2-way athletes with strong hockey IQ. Jokinen surprised me with his inconsistency.

Prust – akin to Christensen – continues to amaze me with his displayed upside. If he develops his hands better, his potential is strong.

By 'hands,' I mean stickhandling, passing, pokecheck, finishing.

Prust has decent hands. If he worked on his passing and accuracy and was able to bulk up a little more (to about 210-215), he could almost be an Avery clone—minus the sloppy seconds of course.

But Kotalik has 2 goals with us!

how are you liking higgins? i know he fired up the flames’ offense.

believe what?

That if they sneak into the playoffs they’ll stink up the joint? Why do some fans want playoff spot? You want your team to be GOOD, not just crappy enough to be a playoff “contender”.

I want the Rangers to emulate the Devils, for goodness sake (no, not that boring Neutral Trap business), but being consistent in winning and higher ranked GOOD team. I want this organization to be well run.
I want solid play every night, well, almost every night. I want better defense. I want the team to go further in the playoffs and a shot at the Cup. I don’t want this mediocre club for the next 10 years.
And this takes impact draft picks, this takes losing for a little while and not a team aiming to coast and just squeak in the playoffs.

Come on people, get with it.

I don’t care if they miss the playoffs one or two seasons if they can right the ship.

Aside from being Debbie Downer...

You assume that if they miss the playoffs they’ll figure out that they need to make some changes. We don’t know that at all. So let’s enjoy the late season push and see if they can make the playoffs a little bit interesting.

Islanders help twice this week

they laid down in the 2nd period on Tuesday to blow the game, and beat the Flyers yesterday

Just yelled 'Go Rangers!' to a guy and gal in Rangers jerseys on my way to work in Tampa

The day is already off to a great start. Hope to see some of you at tonight’s game!

true enough lefty

true enough.

believe it or not, I catch all the games when possible, on TV. I swallow the bad games as much as any fellow fan…hard enough they stink and part of me wants them to lose….(for a better future, IF they got a good pick, of course).

Is it me, or does the team seem to enjoy the “underdog” routine? I’d love for them to win it it all if they make it, but let’s be realistic, aside from Hank, what defense do they have? I think they need him to score too…

let’s go rangers!

by feslenraster on Apr 2, 2010 2:25 PM EDT reply actions

Right on

Yeah, I hear you on wanting the better future. But it’s just not in me to actually root for my own team to lose. They may make it, get eliminated in 4 games, and get a mediocre prospect in the draft, but I am hoping they at least get the chance.

by lefty vs lefty on Apr 2, 2010 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions

If they can end up with a top 7 pick, I say they tank, because I wouldn’t bet on the Rangers to get out of the first round… especially if they play the Caps. The odds would be pretty one-sided.
