Rangers News: Henrik Lundqvist having knee trouble
When I was doing my usual Rangers news search today, I came across this blog post from 5-hole.com: http://5-hole.com/2010/04/22/no-worlds-for-henrik-lundqvist/. Apparently, Lundqvist won't be playing for Sweden in the I.I.H.F. World Championship next month due to a knee injury that hasn't responded to physical therapy. This makes finding a capable backup of tremendous importance during the off-season. Whoever that winds up being is going to have to play a much more involved role next season, and I'm not so sure Auld will cut it. Hopefully, Torts starts taking this situation seriously because Hank's health should be, in my mind, the team's top priority. Hank can't keep being the Blueshirts' crutch, come the playoff crunch, the way we currently play him.
I'm curious as to what everyone thinks. How many games will Lundqvist see next season? And is Auld the best backup bet or should we look elsewhere? Personally, I'd like to see CJ as our backup netminder if he'll get 15-20 games in net.

This happened at the end of last year as well
He was taking shots before the playoffs if I remember correctly.
Don’t fret about this, missing the World Championships is a good way for him to get the only treatment that cna cure his knees … which is rest.
I’m glad about this.

but the follow-up to your point is maybe he needs to play less during the year so he wont burn out or injure his knees.

I agree with that
My point was just that this isn’t the end of the world

I like Johnson as well, but give him 25 to 30 games. Hank looked tired ina few games down the stretch 70+ is way to much.
I don't know about 25 to 30
Ganes for Johnson but 70 if hanks that bad 65 at least for him but Johnson starting 30 is not what I want to see.

I would love it....
I would love to see Lundquist get the start in70 games again next season AND CJ get 25-30 starts…
um thats impossible since theres only 82 games in a season………

I’m kinda thinking he means we go far into the playoffs, therefor playing more than 82 games.

Well if we have anyone but Hank start in net more than 20 games
We won’t be seeing the playoffs

Ye of little faith...
I didn’t think my point was that obscure, nor did I think it would be met with so little optimism. In this day and age of free agency and deep pockets a lot can change in one off-season. I realize there are several contracts that are suffocating this team, but if management REALLY wants they can be dealt with.
are you suggesting Lundqvist be traded??
by CrazyRangerFan on Apr 23, 2010 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions
thats what I thought but what does that have to do with Chad and Hank getting a lot of games. unless he means if we dump them it automatically means were in the playoffs.
by CrazyRangerFan on Apr 24, 2010 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions
I would love to see Hank get a little bit of a break next year, but I still feel like he is gonna get about 70 starts
How about....
The rangers just need to be a better team so that Lundqvist doesn’t NEED to be the crutch…. We can put in any back up and not really worry about it. Lundqvist is an elite goaltender on what has been a mediocre team. They need to improve around him. They’ve been drafting well and have brought in a few good players… they need to get rid of the dead weight and improve on and replaces those players… create a team that doesn’t need to rely on it’s goaltender to win the games… win them their selves.
Fire sather. End of story.
I went back and translated the entire Swedish article last night in order to write a story on it for my site. Anyway, within the article, the writer said “Lundqvist battled injuries virtually the entire season”. If that is true, it is news to me. I do not know how true that is but….

Rest is better than playing even if he's healthy.
Let him take it easy for a few months. Have a doughnut. Watch baseball or whatever they play in Sweden in the summer. Rest and therepy.

75..
I’m sure this goes for all of us when I say we would enjoy the luxury of seeing Hank play 60-65 games, but we all know that with our cap situation, a backup is not going to be top priority, and whoever said it is right, he can NOT keep being our crutch. We do need to play better in front of him. With that said, does anyone have any idea who may be available at a decent price, for a backup?
My second question for you Ranger faithful is who do you think is the one guy , Slats seeks during FA and does anyone think Gilroy will be back next year, or bait to move up in draft?
Isn't this from the injury he seemed to suffer...
when Erik Christensen fell on him during the game vs. the Flyers at the Garden? He seemed to be flexing that leg quite a bit when he got up. He was brave to get back up and win, and follow that up with a courageous effort against them in Philly. But it sounds like Alex Auld may need to be resigned after all.

Lot of true butterfly goalies wind up with problems. Many of them have surgeries on their joints/knees because of the abuse they take (hips especially). It’s one of the reasons a guy like Brodeur (choke or not, the Devils played shitty) can still play most of the games and will probably do so for a few more years at least.
There's a lot of hybrid in Lundquist, though.
I wouldn’t classify him as a true butterly. He has lots of stand-up skill and is absolutely solid in his positioning. I’d almost imagine that not having a true style is what makes for his injury vulnerability. I do hope that he will recover and be ready for the upcoming season.

He needs to play less...
AND we need to play better in front of him. I don’t care who the goaltender is, we need to play better in front of them if we plan to go anywhere next season. I think, now that Johnson had his short stint in the NHL and played down in the AHL, we should bring him up. He is a good young goaltender.
Didn’t we pick up another goaltender from someone anyways in a trade before the deadline?
The Rangers have been abusing Lundqvist for years.
There is no reason to start him EVERY game.
Look at the Devils and Brodeur…..since 2001, Marty has played nearly every game, and come playoff time, all those minutes add up and work against the player and team.
Rangers have a couple of good goalies in the system…use them……stop trying to trade to solve our problems….this approach does not work.
dont trust chad johnson..
if they dont bring back auld which i think he is a capable backup you think they would take a shot at gustvason he is a free agent? and whatever happend to antoine lafleaur there draft pick from 3
years ago?
monster signed for 2 more years in TOR
lafleur sucked and wasnt offered a contract.

I find it weird that Toronto signed Jussi Rynas(spelling?) as well today.
by CrazyRangerFan on Apr 24, 2010 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions
what’s funnier is a week ago it was said he wasnt going to Tor.
as for him going there being weird it is a 2 yr deal and Giggy is up in a year. Maybe Giguere and Monster split time this year and Monster gets the gig in a year while Jussi becomes the backup

just funny how Toronto picked up the two hot unsigned Scandinavian goalies in two consecutive years.

If anyone is interested, my Opinion is a strong argument for equal time or even triple terms. 35 lundquist- break the rest up into 30 backup, 22 extra.
Three starting net minders, broken down in to terms of healthly team bonding.
Overall endurance for the playoffs. Knowledge of team schemes.
My example would be to emulate baseball starting pitchers, rotation playing time.
defensemen pairing set to each netminder as the starting lineups.
Get every single player involved in to the scheme so they understand that “HANK”
does not have to save the bacon every time the fire gets hot.. FATIGUE
look at Marty, and Hank, and all the other game leaders in regulation playing time as starting Goalies. Then there is Boucher, Phili.net minder who played ahalf of a handfull of games and is resting his bones waiting for the next round. He is Fresh and Experienced. I knew he had less than a chance to beat lundquist, but hey even the King gets tired and hurt. Go Rangers, get back that mystique that is Ranger Pride.
