NHL Analysis: Who Is The NHL's Most Underrated Player?
Remember the recent poll taken of NHL players by ESPN Magazine that had Sean Avery listed as one of the most overrated players in the NHL? Well the hockey managers at SBNation started debating who the most underrated player is. We were all asked to choose a player from a team other than the one we cover, and there were many good choices. A few of us (myself included) picked Jamie Langenbrunner of the Devils, Rich Peverley of the Thrashers was another popular choice. Ryan Callahan was also named. So I thought I would open the debate to you guys. You can vote on some of the names that were discussed, or add your own to the thread.
If there is a Ranger you feel is underrated, feel free to post that as well.

Nicklas Backstrom, Washington. 4th best player in the league and yet how often do you hear of him?

Blair Betts
even though he is a smelly Flyer

+1 Betts is the most underrated player in the whole league. Best PK guy, wins faceoffs, blocks shots, gives his all every shift. Remind me again why Sather let him go?

Have to go with Ryan Callahan
just on guts alone.
I Am HockeyMan!!
Not Dolphins, Penguins, or Shoe-Ins...just Rangers, nothin' but Rangers!!
I think Cally making the USA team as the #1 PK player is a pretty good sign people know who he is.
Peverly’s a good one. I’d be inclined to say Wojtek Wolski if I was going on my own.

I liked the Peverley & Langenbrunner choices and Danz10’s mention of Callahan.
The two Caps you chose aren’t even the most underrated on their own team. Jeff Schultz gets that honor.
Other guys I’d add to the list off the top of my head – Mark Streit, Jordan Staal, Brad Richards. Mikko Koivu and Martin Handzal are close, but not in the same category I don’t think.

You’re right about B-Rad :)
He is a top-ten scorer, yet he doesn’t get a lot of love. It’s too bad, but I think Brad likes it that way.

Like Rich Peverley, but take a look on that same team and it’s hard to hate on Nik Antropov. Virtually same TOI as Peverley, but a +16, more blocked shots, and fewer giveaways. More hits, too, but not many care about that. Biggest knock would be FO%, but on a team that averaged a -2.38 (and Peverley with a -12), that +16 suggests to me it wasn’t a huge factor. Throw in 24 goals on a 19.7 shooting percentage and 43 assists in 75 games, and here’s a guy that, like Peverley, was stranded in a tough place to play and performed unbelievably well.
Honorable mention to Mark Fistric for somehow putting up a +24 on the Dallas Stars.

I have no idea how Fistric does it, but that plus-minus is a telling stat. Any player that can have such a high plus on a bad team is something great.

Jason Arnott
I think he puts in one solid year after another and never really gets talked about.
games-1097
G- 382
A- 489
pts- 871
and he has been a + players for 10 straight years, although he is at -1 right now.
depends on how we are defining underrated, but i would submit 4 or 5 guys for some consideration. Kopitar, skill is known but is never talked about with the young elite guys. Loui Eriksson in dallas, Derek Roy in Buffalo, Chris Stewart Colorado. Also not sure that Kesler is underrated but if Langenbrunner and Cally get mentions then I guess Kesler would fall into a similar level.
My impression is that people (especially the media) gush over his two-way play but kind of forget he’s almost a point-per-game player.

Incidentally
I think the mere fact that Dubinsky hasn’t even been mentioned should qualify him.
You know, the guy with the harder PK QUALCOMP, with a GAON/60 that is half of Callahan’s (7.66 to 3.99 for Dubi)
You know, the guy who is 3rd on the team in Pts/60 at ES, behind only Gabby and Prospal?
You know, the guy with 3 more points in 9 less games than the underrated Callahan?
You know, that guy?
Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay
Oh agreed. There are more in the league. I think he tops the Rangers though.

Afinogenov
of the Thrashers. He has been on a tear this year. He has more points this year than he did the past two years with Buffalo. And he was a huge help on that lovely playoff push they had once they dropped Kovalchuk.
I do like the Cally and Dubinsky talk though. Both of playing outstanding this year. My vote was for Langenbrunner though.
Cally is overrated if anything
His shot is terrible and his goals are all out of hard work, but some fans still think he can be a 60pt sniper or something….
Streit’s a good choice, as is M. Koivu. Arnott’s another good one. Kess, people knew about last year.
Zach Parise
it is so rare you ever hear his name brought up in the best NHL player discussion, yet he plays with his heart on his sleeve every shift, puts up a ton of points and isn’t defensively liable

lol...
For those who didn’t read the article, I found it hilarious that the Rangers were voted one of the best organizations. I guess to play for but not from a fans pt of view. I also LOL’d the Torts was voted the worst coach to play for.

Nicklas Backstrom, Jere Lehtinen, Jamie Langenbrunner, Segei Zubov always was very underrated.
There are a lot of guys who play on southern teams that don’t get a lot of love because of where they play.

Jordan Staal
He gets no accolades because of the other two guys and was a big part of them winning the championship.
i disagree somewhat – i think he gets mentioned quite a bit because everyone talks about the incredible depth down the middle for the Pens, and they don’t just stop and Sid and Malkin, they mention Staal.
I feel like every time I watch the Pens play, the point out how good a third line center he is.
jordan staal
he is underrated, but i dont think he is as that underrated. every time i see a pittsburgh game, no matter which announcers are there, they always say “this is the best 3rd line in the game.” referring of course to staals line. that is a big compliment, and i think most fans know who he is, so i wouldn’t put him in the top 10 most underrated.

Robyn Regehr
One of the best shutdown defensemen in the game (has had a bit of a poor season this year) but is never spoken of and often gets overlooked. Such a solid Blueliner
The Sedin's
maybe this is east coast bias..but I just don’t hear enough about em. Seems Luongo always gets all the credit, which kinda makes him a bit overrated.
I mean..if Daniel plays a full season this year, these 2 account for at least 200pts combined..easy.
Maybe its cuz they’re kinda creepy? But this is right up there with the 1-2 same line punches in the league.
Henrik Sedin.
The stats speak for themselves, and his brother was gone for 1/4 of the season, but his points didn’t falter. Plus he’s great defensively, works hard and is a great leader.
I’d also pick Rich Peverley or even Patrick Hornqvist. Probably Lundqvist too, I feel he could be a cup-winning goalie in front of a great defense like NJ or Minny 3 years ago.

part of me really likes to agree with you on H. Sedin, because he’s having such a phenomenal year, but I’m not sure he’s actually underrated… I mean, who doesn’t recognize him as a great player? Any real fan of the game sure does, and I’m certain other teams’ players and coaches recognize it. I think he just seems underrated because he’s not mentioned as much as Crosby or Ovechkin, no commercials and all that… basically, he’s not a ‘face’ of the NHL as those two d-bags are. But I don’t think people rate him lower as a player.
Loui Eriksson
Hes been one of the few good players for Dallas this year and hes putting up good numbers
Marc Staal
Without a doubt Staal is one of the most underrated. Every year he just goes about his business of shutting down the top players night after night. He doesnt get the spotlight much. He doesn’t score alot (althought lately he’s on fire) but give me this guy on the ice with 1 minute left to play and protecting a 1 goal lead. He makes all the right plays in his own zone. Always wins the puck along the boards. Just watch him along the boards. He makes that subtle little play to shake away from the forecheckers and then he moves the puck with a solid pass to the forwards and clear the zone. There is no one I would rather have on the ice with the game on the line other than Marc Staal.
Until the Olympics, this was an easy answer: Ryan Kesler.
Now, I’m not sure, but it sure ain’t Langenbrunner. How can I guy named captain of the US Olympic team be underrated?
Paul Stastny
Best player on his team, even though his accomplishments get overshadowed by Duchene, O’Reilly, and Anderson. Plays all situations like Kesler, and probably not talked about due to injuries the past few seasons (received from blocking shots on the pk). Even though he was part of team USA, his accomplishments still were not highlighted, and very rarely was he even talked about. Absolutely the most underrated player in the league. Most of these other guys are the 2nd or 3rd best players on their team, while Stastny is the best, he still doesn’t get recognition for it
Ryan Kesler
I really like the Sedin answers, but a lot more people know about them than about Kesler (then again his name really got out there during the Olympics). He has a chance at 80 points this year, he was nominated for the Selke last year and might be again this year, he blocks shots, he plays physical, works hard in the corners, is a great penalty killer, great on the power play, passes really well, and he’s not on the same line as Henrik and Daniel so you can’t say he’s coasting on their skill. Also he was one of the best players on the team during USA’s Olympic run. All in all he’s one of the best two way forwards in the game (at least i think so). I think he’s like a more talented version of Brandon Dubinsky.
Kesler is such a solid player. Remember when everyone balked at Clarke offering Kesler that ridiculous offer sheet. While the money was premature based on Kesler’s production to that point; I’m really, really happy the Canucks decided to match it and he is not a Flyer right now.
Also, Jan Hejda of the Columbus Blue Jackets is a very underrated D-man. He plays for Columbus, so he’s never going to put up good numbers, but he consistently goes against the best players in the West. A very solid defensive D-man.

Thank you.
Kesler is so underrated, im not sure how I didn’t think of him. Definitely my choice

Andrei Markov
I know people are gonna be thinking about how I’m such a Habs homer but Markov is crucial to the Habs. People wouldn’t put him in the top 5 defenseman in the NHL, but I honestly think he’s the best. Despite being injured, he still has 30 points in 42 games. He’s been quarterbacking a very successful Habs powerplay since 2005-06, no matter who left. He’s also great on defense (the season when Ovechkin scored 63 goals, he said that the hardest defenseman to play against in the NHL was Markov) and a quiet leader. One of the best defensemen to ever play for us, and that’s saying something.
Paul Gaustad
Great faceoff man and all-around physical presence. Not to mention Gaustad, Miller, and Kaleta are the heart of the Sabres; they’re a different team with any one of those guys out.
His little brother plays for my college, lucky me lol

If you're pro Avery...
and anti-Kaleta, then you’re just a hypocrite. Can’t (and wouldn’t) argue about Jarko though.
And I wasn’t saying Kaleta is overrated (although you probably could) just that he along with Miller and Gaustad are what make the Sabres go.
He’s entering the twilight of his career, but I always thought Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa was underrated and underappreciated. He’s a complete hockey player.

Nigel Dawes
when he’s on a line with rene bourque, dawes just clicks in. he obviously never had that with the rangers, but i always loved his style.
Fleury's comeback could only be trumped by Leetch
my pick is eric staal
but alot of the choices i saw that i liked are:
kesler, alfredsson, dubs, arnott, any of the staals really
does that fact that alot of us think that kesler is underrated automatically make him not underrated lol
No love for the potential 40 goal scorer
Alex Burrows?
Ok maybe he won’t hit 40 this year, but he is the true definition of Power Forward and has netted 35 for the Canucks this year.
good pick.
people take too much away from burrows because he gets to play with the sedin twins. well also because he is a dirty little bitch, but that is a different story. fact is that he is on that line because he deserves to be there. he works hard and does the things that are necessary to score and win.

my list...
Tobias Enstrom- ATL- 243 gp- 120 pts, +6 bogosian, kubina, and hainsey all get more respect than enstrom, but imo he is the best overall d-man on that roster.
Niklas Kronwall- DET-305 gp- 142 pts, +46 a solid d-man and a big hitter. (gets more recognition then the other guys on this list, but still gets lost in the shuffle when people talk about det.)
Douglas Murray- SJ- no real offensive ability, but an excellent d-man.
James Neal- DAL- 152 gp- 50 goals, 91 pts. solid winger.
Anton Volchenkov
Most under-rated player – but a part of the most under-rated position in hockey. Defensive defencemen, who hit, block shots, penalty kill, and shut down opponents top forwards are the most under-rated players in the NHL.
They should have a Rod Langway trophy to give these defensive d-men some credit.
