For the Rangers, Next Week Can Wait, the Playoffs Start Now

Some thoughts as we get ready for "playoff" (or is it "play-in"?) hockey:

I really hope Erik Christensen and Brandon Prust are going to be here for awhile.  Wouldn't bother me to see Jody Shelley back next year either, unless they find someone better and younger to do the same job.

I like the Rangers chances at getting the two wins, I really do. I think Henrik will be the difference. But I sure would feel a lot better about it if Number 16 was playing. He is a difference maker against the Flyers.

I have a feel Marian Gaborik is going to shine tonight. Brandon Dubinsky too.

We've seen the Rangers come out flat more times than I care to remember this season. But if they come out that way tonight, as far as I'm concerned, they could melt a hole at center ice and dump the Rangers right into it. At home, playoffs on the line, Garden in full throat, Flyers on the other side of the ice. No excuse for not playing with emotion tonight.

Is it too soon to break out the playoff superstitions?

  • If you could have written the script, you couldn't come up with a much better scenario for Mike Modano's last game. "Mo" scores the tying goal with 1:47 to go, and adds a goal in the shootout to lead the Stars to a 3-2 win. Incredible.
  • You guys see the highlights of Andrej Meszaros getting hurt in the Lightning game? Painful watching him get off the ice.
  • Speaking of the Lightning game, how about goalie Mike Smith dropping the gloves? Love seeing that.
  • The Penguins had a ceremony for the last regular season game at the Igloo last night. Bryan Trottier was there, I wonder how much they had to pay him.
  • I think the You Tube parodies of the NHL's "History Will Be Made" commercials are better than the real ones.
  • NHL Network listed their "Top Ten Games of the Season" last night on NHL on the Fly. Gee, what a surprise, the number one game was Capitals vs. Penguins.

Nice write up

Agree on Christensen and Prust. Prust is like a poor mans Avery who is a better fighter and Christensen has been better then I ever could have expected. I think of EC as a guy who can thrive playing with a star player, because that guy can create some room and Christensen has a great, quick shot with a fast release, he is one of our only players who actually looks to shoot the puck.

Looking forward to some good hockey, take care of the Flyers, watch McDonagh and Stepan do some work on Saturday against Chris Kreider.

Prust isn’t a poor mans avery- Avery, an Agitator and Prust, fiesty with grit.
Christensen hasn’t surprised me- 10-15 goal guy with 1st line minutes/82 games, minor playmaking skills with soft hands… he shines once every 15 games.

With that being said i do agree with some aspects of this post but lets face it, this is the Rangers. When we’ve had our backs against a wall, bubba’s come and bent us over and made us realize we aren’t clutch. I also feel like people go with the “flavor of the night” rather than an overall season performance when assessing their team’s players. Take Dubi for example. Dubi shows heart without a shadow of a doubt, but hes been proven inconsistent throughout the regular season. Sure he CAN come up big tonight and I damn well hope so, but I wanna focus on our 2 diamonds..Gabby and Hank. Gabby hasn’t been the goal scoring machine we need him to be since the Olympics. Whether its because he’s injured, we’ll never know. If we do make this final push he’s our key outside the paint. Now to Hank. Lets face it…. he’s tired..the dreaded 4 letter word. Torts abused him and Hank is showing signs of fatigue. Will he come up big? Probably for 1 or maybe the 2 games. Where do we go from there? 1st Round against Washington. The best all around offense in the league and a 4th line that destroys the Rangers. Their backbone, the Ranger killer and blueshirt brick wall…a rested Simeon Varlamov. Ok now to be a tad optimistic. Say we take Washington in 4, there’s a MINIMUM of 12 games to win the cup. Have we been consistent through a 12 game streak this season, yes…2-9-1(might be off). This years playoffs to us, is worthless bragging rights. Itll be another offseason of us crying for Sather’s demise and Reddens future “unfortunate accident” Sorry for shitting on the parade…couple beers+Rangers talk = not a good mix. Heres to hoping. LETS GO RANGERS

Sure, it's a surprise.

I totally thought they would’ve chosen the Leafs-Oilers game from mid-March. Canadian pride and the first overall pick on the line… that game was CRA-A-AZY!

it may be off topic

but great job bringing up Modano…guy has always flown under the radar down in dallas but he truly is one of the game’s greats and needs to be celebrated like one…and as u said hollywood couldn’t have written a better ending for Mo

Tonite's game and the current Young Rangers....

…and I really feel like the past 10 games and especially these last two games cant help but be good for the developement of the current young Rangers. To be left for dead and still battle to the point were their destiny is in their hands right now. Everything on the line the last two games of the year against your hated rival….. Its going to be a really positive experience for the developemet for Del Zotto, Anisimov, Staal, Caly, and Dubinsky….even if we done make it in.

I have to say

I’ve been very impressed with what the Rangers have done from afar the past few weeks. I have watched highlights b/c I’ve been abroad but with the season the line the Rangers have really showed some guts. I thought they were a mostly gutless team made of mostly individuals but they’ve really showed us something. Then again, it’s still pathetic that they had to have their collective nuts in a vice to step their game up.

I'm an optimist and want to accentuate the positive here...

Want to see the players who got us here be in the lineup. Parenteau, Voros, Anisimov, Prust and Shelley. But most of all, Drury, Christensen, Roszival, and Staal. This particular foursome has been tremendous in this stretch. I look forward to seeing them do what was seemingly unthinkable two weeks ago, and make the playoffs.

Cheers to Modano, Tkachuk, maybe Selanne. Three tremendous careers.

3 guys who weren’t just immensely talented, but also great ambassadors for the sport of hockey. They deserve a hell of a lot more publicity and accolades than a golfer who can’t keep it in his pants and steroid-abusing baseball players.
