Rangers Recap: Rangers Win For TastyKakes! Defeat Flyers 4-3
[Note by Jim Schmiedeberg, 04/09/10 10:32 PM EDT Joe Fortunato did the recap for us, but asked me to post it]
[Note by Jim Schmiedeberg, 04/09/10 10:33 PM EDT If you don't get the headline, you will have to read the game threads from last night to understand]
Let me preface this by saying that the game tonight was one of the best games I have ever seen. Definitely top five, but a few playoff games take the cake.
Also, for those of you that even entertained the idea of trading Henrik Lundqvist, or that he wasn't good enough to be the number one starter, please eat heaping slices of humble pie. That pad save he made at the tail end of the game on James van Riemsdyk might have been the best save I have ever seen. This team goes where Lundqvist goes, period. There is no more debate, he is the life that runs through the blood of this team and he proved it tonight. Aside from the beauty he made four or five magnificent saves to keep this a game.
Let's also note, while we're noting, that since the Rangers won this game in regulation it doesn't matter how they win on Sunday. It can be in regulation or overtime, it doesn't matter. Now onto the game.
I missed the first period thanks to a train cancellation, but when I got to the Garden (right in time for the start of the second) I knew the atmosphere was going to be special. The fans knew that the team needed it, but more importantly the team PLAYED like they needed it. The hustle, heart, goals, and play that we have all been demanding was evident through most of the game.
Chris Drury, Jody Shelley, Brandon Dubinsky and Marian Gaborik were the goal scorers. When I got to the game I joked that I didn't know who I was more surprised about hearing score, Drury or Shelly (might be my best comment all year).
In the second period the Rangers got on the board early when Gaborik--who was due for a big game--streaked to the net and dropped the puck off in the crease to his trailer. That trailer, Dubinsky, flew at the puck and roofed it to give the Rangers a 3-1 lead. But the Rangers didn't make it easy on themselves--do they ever?--and soon after Daniel Brier buried a beautiful clapper to cut the Ranger lead to one. Keeping with their newly found momentum the Flyers ran rampant over the Rangers, who were on their heels, and eventually Mike Richards tied the game on a breakaway opportunity.
But Rangers hockey can sometimes be magical, and it was Richards' goal--which one would have expected would have sucked the life from the Rangers--that filled them with life. From that point forward the Rangers started breaking free offensively, they defended bravely, and when needed Lundqvist stood taller than the Empire State Building. And eventually Gaborik streaked in on a semi-breakaway, and his shot deflected into the top corner to give the Rangers a 4-3 lead.
The third period would basically be a culmination of failed power play attempts for both sides, and missed opportunities. The period was highlighted by Brian Boucher flipping the puck into his own post before recovering to make an unreal save against Shelley. Lundqvist would return the favor with his God-like pad stop at the other end minutes later.
The main proprietor of that heart that the Rangers needed to badly was Brandon Prust, who is quickly becoming one of the more vital players on the team. He was all over the ice, throwing hits, getting quality scoring chances, and his forechecking was about as brilliant as it could be; he better be back next year. Also give a stick salute to Brandon Dubinsky who, even in an injury year, notched his 20th goal tonight. Good for him, I've said all along I thought he had more talent than Ryan Callahan and he is rewarding me for it.
The good thing about playing the Flyers is that they always bring out the best in the Rangers. The game was intense, hard hitting, full of magical plays, and filled with hatred. All I can say is that Sunday will be a war, and if the Rangers play then like they did tonight they will be banging the playoff drums in New York.

Kinda funny that Joe mentions “cake” in his recap, and wasn’t in on the joke

Thrilled
About hearing there will be shows Sat and Sun. I am thrilled how they played tonight. They can bring Kate Smith back from the dead to sing on Sunday for all I care. The Rangers will win the game.
The only disappointment was having to hear the Flyers telecast on Versus.

Eat some crow
How you enjoying the off-season. How long will it take the Rangers to re-build? Looks like Kate Smith could have done a lot better than Lunklutz … You couldn’t beat our third string goalie, that’s just pathetic …Tortorella increased the blood pressure dose for sure.
Unbelievable Run
This is truly incredible. The playoffs have already started for the New York Rangers. Very inspiring!
Also, nice recap, Joe, considering you probably wrote it on the train. Lol

there is a rather large mistake in the recap though as it was Richards not Carter who scored the tying goal.
i fixed it
thanks

one more boys ..
there is no way crappy boucher beats the king sunday but how much will we have left in the tank for the playoffs ?? oh and sather please resign prust this kid has heart and fire in his blood..
Cherry
Sometimes (Ok, alot of times) Don Cherry is off the map, but he is a fan of Prust and now I am too…..
I don't care
That this is for the bottom tier of the East…this was a helluva game to watch. Hank was huge, they played hard and I thought (watching the game in a bar in Pittsburgh where no one cared about the game there except me) that the early shite goal would have killed them…but they battled, played great when they had to and made the season live for another day. On pins and needles for the next one.
Great Recap, Amazing Game
I need to get my blood pressure checked after the last 5 mins of the 3rd. Also, big ups to Girardi for stepping up for AA. Can’t agree more about Prust.
Prust
A couple weeks ago the Rangers were shorthanded 5 on 4 and Prust took a really dumb penalty launching me into a rant about what the h$ll is prust doing killing penalties etc. etc..
Ever since he’s been one of the most noticeable Rangers, forechecking, scoring, nice passing, helping on D. My room mate won’t let me forget my comment and every time Prust does anything he goes “I guess he shouldn’t be on the ice huh?” I definitely ate my own foot on that one
F the Philadelphia Failures
that is all I have to say about that. Go Rangers!
Rangers FTW!

Wow Jim Slow down on the Kool-Aid...
Were you sitting up in section 403 or did the NY commentators fool you again? Henrik had an awful first 50 minutes, the Flyers had no business being in this game whatsoever. Dont get me wrong he pulled it through at the end of the game but it shouldn’t of even gotten there. There is a something a bit “odd” about his Henrik love, 2 times tonight people in the upper sections started a “Henry” chant and the pucks were blocked by D men both times. Any goalie in the league not named Boucher could of won this game for the Rangers. The Rangers as a team though played great.
1. Joe wrote the recap.
2. Go back and watch “Rangers in 60”, he made some big saves. Yes, the second Richards goal was soft, but Henrik was outstanding overall.
I don’t think there is anything “odd” about the Henrik love. They are a 20 win team without him.
If anything, there is something “odd” about the Henrik dislike.

I’m sorry but the 2nd Richards goal was kicked in by Roszival. Henrik poke-checked the puck away and Rosi just booted it right over Henrik with his left skate.
It wasn’t kicked in by Rozsival. It ricocheted off his leg as he was stopping. It’s not his fault, but it’s just another way to blame Rozy for something he didn’t do.
"Jaromir Jagr.... it's a POWER PLAY GOAL!"
- Sam Rosen
"Marian Gaborik.... it's a POWER PLAY GOAL!"
-Sam Rosen
Kicked in, ricochet, WTFever, I’m just saying that goal wasn’t soft on Henrik’s part like Jim said, Henrik made the poke-check and the puck, to make you happy ‘bounced of Roszival’s leg as he was attempting to back-check Richards’.
And I’d blame Staal more on that goal-he moved up too high and was too close to the boards, leaving Richards a big lane to blow through.
Ok so whatever, if it was a soft goal, or deflected in, or thrown there by a Twinkie vendor, it doesn’t matter. It just furthers my counter point to coleko.
Let’s hypothesize:
Henrik is hurt in training camp, and misses this entire season. How many wins would the Rangers have with a combination of Valliquette-Johnson-Zaba-Auld?
20-25, no more.

If those goalies were the only goalies in the world, I agree I would pick Henrik. But the NHL has 29 more teams.
Give me 5 NHL goalies you would rather have then Henrik. I doubt you can do it

Coleko
I know you don’t like Lundy but you have to be rational. He was brilliant tonight, you have to get over the fact that he is here to stay.

Did you not see the Lundqvist save on van Riemsdyk in the third period? I guess not since you were sitting up in the 400s. That save there saved us the game because it was an easy tap-in. Hank slid across and made an amazing save.
And how could you not be drinking the kool aid now? The team is making a miraculous run at a playoff spot!

HUH??
Dude did you watch the game? How can you say Hank was horrible the first 50 minutes? We dont win this game without hank. Richards first goal he had no chance. Before he knew it Richards had the puck and was right on top of him. Briere’s goal was unstoppable. Cross ice pass and he buries it top corner. Third goal he stopped Richards it was kicked in by Rosy. Again no chance stopping it.
I dunno why all the hate for Lundqvist. He was awesome.

When the Flyers score a goal, their announcer says “_________ scores a case for TastyKakes!”
It’s for charity I believe, but it completely removes the testicles from the great sport of hockey.
Might as well just say “That Briere goal is sponsored by Dress Barn!”

Even though ya bastards gave us hockey’s most pathetic player in Ales Kotalik, I still gotta cheer for you vs Philly on Sunday. What a great game, even the perpetually useless Olli Jokinen had a nice block to clear the zone with a buck thirty left in the third. Its good to see Prust getting rewarded on the score sheet lately, ever since that ridiculous trade where we played Jokinen and Prust vs Philadelphia when they knew they were gone by the end of the night, I’ve hoped he would fit in well in NY. Sure looks like he has! Awesome for Prusty to get some love, he sure didn’t get any from the Sutters in CGY. Go Rangers!

quote from Broad Street Hockey:
Let’s be honest here. The Flyers are a better team than the Rangers. We know this and I think Rangers fans do, too. The Flyers clearly are better on offense, even when they aren’t scoring like they can. They have a much more solid defense and they’re better on special teams, too.
I personally don’t think the Flyers are the better team, but then again, I’m not a Flyers fan.
"Jaromir Jagr.... it's a POWER PLAY GOAL!"
- Sam Rosen
"Marian Gaborik.... it's a POWER PLAY GOAL!"

Well, we can compare a little.
Figure Carter/Gaborik are a wash. Carter’s got more size and a harder shot, but Gabby’s got the jets and quick release. Richards is like a younger version of Dru, though Richards has got a mean-streak. Figure Hartnell is like Dubi…we don’t have anything like a Briere…maybe Prospal/EC together production-wise. Giroux is pretty talented and is young. Gagne too, definitely before the concussions, we had no answer for him.
They definitely have a more talented group of top 6 forwards (Cart/Briere/Rich/Hart/Gagne/Giroux), no doubt, but I think we have the depth by far.
Goaltending. Yeah, it needs not be said.
Defensively, they’re way past better than we are. Pronger is still a beast, Timmonen is very smart in both zones, Carle is becoming pretty good along with Coburn…we have Staal/Girardi, and MDZ on the PP….but overall their D is better IMO.
You guys don’t have a better team on paper- not even an argument. They are absolutely stacked. I’m stunned they are battling for 8th… Until you see how weak their goaltending is. The Rangers are a two man show- Gaborik is amazing, but the real lynchpin is Henrik. What a great goalie.
by Rod Blogojevich on Apr 10, 2010 3:10 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I'd take Staal over Pronger anyday
Absolutely the flyers have the better team on paper. We’ve all been saying for months that the Rangers are a mediocre team with a great goalie. It’s just that the Rangers are hot now and riding the wave.
by 76 Blueshirt on Apr 10, 2010 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions
I'm a Ranger fan...
and I don’t think its all that clear.
Really..the Rangers have a whole bunch of players who underachieve…but we have the best player out of both teams (Gabby) and by far, the best goalie.
That goalie thing, counts for a lot.
Penetrating and Devastating!
by FreeBradshaw on Apr 10, 2010 8:24 AM EDT up reply actions
Boucher nearly helped us get a two goal lead
AND I WOULD PAY BIG MONEY TO SEE FLYERS FANS THROW TASTYCAKES AT HIM IF BOUCHER WOULD’VE PUT IN THAT OWN GOAL!
I nearly laughed my arse off when he tried to cross that puck to the near boards. But it’s a shame that the post stopped him from putting into the net and Shelley has to roof that instead of going low.
But I’m not complaining right now. The Rangers have Sunday to make their plans to go to the playoffs and possibly knock the Flyers out. WHAT A HELL OF A WEEKEND THIS WILL BE BOYS!

funny
How you enjoying the playoffs? I am glad we are done with the cesspool to the immediate North ( Rangers & Devils ). Now we are facing real competition …. I’m not sure if you are slow but do you realize your team couldn’t beat our THIRD string goalie in a shoot-out ? Lunklutz falls flat on his face while under pressure. I stated on my previous posts back in January that we’d see you guy in the 2011 playoffs. I was wrong , your team is soooo sad it will be 2013
I’m pulling hard for Carolina over Boston and the Leafs over Montreal on Saturday.
Biggest shocker of tonight’s game: Girardi kicking Hartnell’s ass! Gotta love it.
I don’t know about you guys, but I’m absolutely loving this team right now (With the exception of Redden, of course, but he actually make a critical clear or blocked shot when we needed, so I don’t know).
We finally have the secondary scoring we’ve been looking for, we have the muscle when teams like Philly come along, I think Tort finally settled on lines (at least until Avery comes back, but with Callahan possibly out again, throw that in the blender), and we’re finally going after guys that crash our net. I’m chugging the kool-aid now, bring on the Crapitols!
Redden
… could have easily blocked Brierre’s gola-scoring slapshot from the slot, if had been willing to sacrifice the body and slide out in front of the shot, as Drury and Callahan routinely do. He just waved at Briere as the shot flew past and only managed to screen Lundquist.
by PotvinSucks on Apr 10, 2010 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions
Redden wasn't even on the ice.
Roszival and Staal were the d-pair. Prust backchecked, went past the net. It was Prust who didn’t get out to cover Briere in time.
Eat up !
Schmeidy, Flyers 4 Bruins 0 , I’m enjoying the playoffs. You eating TastyKakes now? I loved this one:
Also, for those of you that even entertained the idea of trading Henrik Lundqvist, or that he wasn’t good enough to be the number one starter, please eat heaping slices of humble pie. That pad save he made at the tail end of the game on James van Riemsdyk might have been the best save I have ever seen. This team goes where Lundqvist goes, period.
Who is eating the humble pie now? " The team goes where Lunklutz goes " is that what you said? LMAO …. missed the playoffs because of Hanks big choke.
