Rangers Review: Aaron Voros
In his second season with the Rangers, the 28 year old Aaron Voros played in 13 less games and scored 9 less points. To his credit, though, he saved two of his three goals for the stretch-run, and also played a role in the effective checking lines that set the tone many nights as the Rangers came up just short for the 8th spot. Voros will be heading into the final year of his contract with the Blueshirts this season (1 Mill $ cap hit), so it will be interesting to see if he can produce enough to warrant another contract.

[Note by Rob Luker, 05/09/10 3:49 PM EDT ] For some reason there isn't a Voros profile or stat widget. Sign of things to come?
What we liked: Voros skates like a bat out of hell and doesn't back down from anyone. He brings the grit that most fourth and third lines need and is always in the middle of things after the whistle. According to his hockeyfights.com Fight Card, Voros got into 13 scraps this year and was voted the winner of 3 while drawing 3. Although he took a shot early in this fight, he bloodied up Matt Bradley of the Capitals to win this good showing back in November:
What we didn't like: Although Voros may have passion that some lack, his skills are of a fringe NHL player. His offensive abilities are limited due to his physical style of play, all-while he struggles consistently in the defensive zone - something that won't get you a lot of playing time under John Tortorella. He was only better than Brian Boyle in terms of the relative +/- rating and his Corsi numbers indicate he spent a lot of time in his own zone. One major problem that I have always had with Voros is that he takes too many penalties all together. The stats back me up on this one, as he took 2 penalties per 60 minutes of play (only Jody Shelley was ahead of him with 2.1). This may not seem high, but when compared with all forwards across the league (min. 40 games played) in the same category, Voros ranks at number 13 just behind Shelley again.
Highlight Play/Game: Like I hinted at above, Voros waited for the end of March and April to score five of his seven points this season. His highlight play has to be this goal against the Leafs on the 7th of April which put the game away as the Rangers pushed for the 8th seed:
Final Thoughts: If Voros had anything more than mediocre offensive ability he would probably make a solid power-forward. But because of his reckless style that leads to plenty of penalties. I completely agree with Torts to sit him for half the year. With that said, his 1 Million dollar salary isn't killing us and he isn't the worst option for a depth forward. Hopefully he plays smarter next year in hope for another contract.
What are your thoughts on Voros? Think he will fit into Torts' system more next season? Think he deserves more opportunities based on his play at the end of the year? Let's hear it...

…opportunity on another team. I have seen enough of Voros to know I would rather not see him in a Ranger uniform. I would rather see youth brought in to replace his “depth”. Byers is a player I could easily see filling his role on a 3rd-4th line.
took the words right out of my mouth, except i was thinking maybe parenteau or just trading voros for someone who can play better consistently…he was a physical player that couldnt fight, couldnt hit hard enough to make the other team pay, and he couldnt play D, he needs to go to calgary or phoenix like the rest of the rangers noone wants

the worst
Voros is worst player to have donned a blueshirt in the since he joined the team. He has a big heart and plays with all of it, but it’s not enough to merit the ice time he’s been given in the past.
His role is that of a checking player, yet he’s never effective at hitting people! He misses more checks than he finishes and he rarely separates opposing players from the puck.
I would be happy if he doesn’t touch the ice for the Rangers next year, no other GM would be foolish enough to even give up a 6th round pick for him.
Sorry, but the “worst” distinction is reserved for number 6
Voros is what he is, a guy who can’t skate very well, can’t fight very well, doesn’t score much, and doesn’t do a lot of hitting. Other than that he is very talented.
I will give him this, he is one of the hardest working guys on the ice with limited ability.
Rob hit it right on the head “Although Voros may have passion that some lack, his skills are of a fringe NHL player.”

Yes, and also he does not complain about sitting as much as he does,
all he cares about is winning, and he will do anything to win. He also does not miss a beat when he is playing for the first time in a month. I think he can be the perfect 13th forward, playing about half the games, being the ultimate team player, and showing his heart when he gets the oppurtunities

I say so long to the "people's champ"
I feel every time Voros fight’s it seems like the other team gains the momentum and we lose the game
Don’t get me started on that “people’s champ” stuff

I don't mind Voros
He’s cheap and he doesn’t seem to mind much sitting more than half the games while traveling with the team. I’d prefer the young guys in Hartford getting playing time as opposed to what Voros has to do. He’s got a good attitude and he’s at least better than a mannequin with a stick out there.
let him go cant skate cant check or score andwhen he fights the other team gets pumped up il give a 5th round pick if they take him

Keep him for now
He’s under contract for another season and isn’t much of a cap hit so it doesn’t hurt to have him around. Obviously if he can learn to take less penalties it would be valuable and he might earn some more ice from torts. on the other side of that i would like to see him improve in his fights. I have always said that all coaches should bring someone in to teach ALL of the players boxing skills. How to think in a fight, how to protect and defend themselves, balance and so many beneficial skills can be learned from boxing even for players who don’t fight. Plus it would be fun for the guys to learn something different together. Team bonding. Anyway, Voros works hard, has a good attitude and supports his teammates when he isn’t playing. I was glad for him when he played well at the end of the season.
He does try
and that’s the sad part. He plays good one game and horribly the other. He is just half the waste that Roszival is and takes up a much needed roster spot. We can only hope that he’s not on the roster next year due to a trade. That would be a nice extra million to have in our arsenal.
why a much needed roster spot?
we didnt even fill up the roster last year…
I am pretty sure you are allowed up to 21 skaters…

I love Voros
Great team guy, doesn’t bother anybody probably one of the best locker room personalities. and really really cares. If he had the skills of an Antropov he could be one of the premier players in the league, but he doesn’t so he makes due with what hes got and I give him all the credit in the world for it. I said it all last season that he should have been playing in Brashear’s spot because he was flat out better at fighting than brash. anyways he really has no spot on the roster now that Shelley is here but he makes a nice 13th forward.
Let’s look at some of the HIGH PAID Sather duds, and look at AV. Played better than a lot of guys. Never whined once at long stretches of healthy scratch and when he played, he played hard. Works hard, always talking up and down the bench (which is more than Drury does), takes hits, gives hits, not scared to jump into plays, hit, crash and bang at both ends. Though I would like to see someone work off season with Voros on his skating ect. so he won’t be so erratic/rusty at times. Put him on the 4th line with Drury and P.A.
cant belive anyone would want to keep him his wast just like redd i couldent care if made only 100 grand hes worthless crap

you clearly don’t see the difference between players with passion and players with dollar signs in there eyes.

Voros Should be Traded
Voros is not needed in New York. He is not a good hockey player and never will be a good hockey player. He is a good guy and will try to help the team in any way possible. Unfortunately, he cannot do anything that Shelley, Prust and Avery cannot do better. We desperately need to get better at defense. Voros is one who can be packaged in a trade for a competent defender.
i would keep voros
as the 13th forward. hes a good locker room guy, plays hard, and NEVER complains about being the designated healthy scratch. dont want a young player(lisin, prucha) to be assigned to that role when players like that should be seeing playing time, whether its with the big club or up in hartford. voros is what he is and will give you nothing but effort and passion when he does get his chance to play a few games
