Rangers Review: Marc Staal

Many of these player reviews won’t be very pleasing, but one that will be is mine: Marc Staal. Staal has been a bright spot on the Rangers blue line for years now, but this year was particularly trying for the young defenseman. With Wade Redden, Matt Gilroy, Michal Rozsival and Michael Del Zotto all playing like rookies (at least two of them were warranted); Staal was basically asked to take on the roll of number one defenseman and then some.

Although he wasn’t given a letter—no, the Rangers aren’t going to remove the "C" from Chris Drury and give it to him—he truly stepped up as a leader. Staal helped keep the back end out of chaos, when he was on the ice, and kept the flies off Henrik Lundqvist for the most part.

I’m not too sure any of us expected John Tortorella to take such an aggressive role in having Staal hone his offensive game. The experiment, however, was a failure; and incidentally threw off Staal’s defensive game at the start of the year.

But soon enough Tortorella realized that the idea was a failure, and he let Staal play his style of play. Staal bounced back pretty quick, and within a few weeks of seeing no power play time, he was back to his old self. Unfortunately he really was one of the only solid contributors on the blue line for the Rangers this season. That has to change next year if the Rangers expect to have any success.

Join me after the jumo for more.

Star-divide

The best part? His style of play included a career high in goals, assists and points; even without quarterbacking the power play. He surged offensively at the end of the year, and was scoring some clutch goals for the Rangers down the stretch. Obviously the Rangers can’t expect Staal to score 30 goals and put up 70 points a year, but if he can be a solid 10 goal 40 point provider no one would complain.

The best part of the entire situation? Staal is only 23 years old, and still has plenty of time to develop and fill out physically. His defense has gotten better over time, and we can expect that to continue as he continues to gain experience and confidence. On a personal note, I feel that this year was very trying for Staal. He was asked to take on a new role, his defense was tested early and in the end the Rangers didn’t make the playoffs. It will be interesting to see how he, in particular, bounces back next year. As much as well all say that this team goes where Lundqvist goes, this team truly goes where Staal goes as well.

As a restricted free agent this year, it will also be interesting to see what kind of contract he gets. I can guarantee that he will re-sign with the team—no I don’t have any inside information but I don’t need it—the only question will be for how much and for how long. The one thing we can be sure of is that Staal will be a rock on the back end for years to come.

Sorry that this recap is so short, but there really isn’t much negative to say about Staal. If you can think of any put them in the comments (at your own risk!) and let your voice be heard. Go ahead, the floor is all yours.

Any more Staals out there?

Marc Staal is our best defenseman and must be signed to a longterm contract. He is going to be one of the best in the NHL. He definitely deserves an A on his jersey. It’s too bad that he is the only reliable defender that the Rangers have. Does Canada’s Staal family have any younger Staals left at home? All three Staals in the NHL are really good.

by snark38 on May 12, 2010 8:33 AM EDT reply actions

Jared

is the youngest. And guess who drafted him in 2008? (Nope – not the Rangers).

The Yotes drafted him… He’s supposed to have the best hockey sense of any of the Staalses. He doesn’t have the same focus as the rest of them or so I’ve heard. Maybe the Rangers will trade for him…hahaha.

Nothing says powerplay like strobe lights and video game music.

I believe there is one more Staal on the way.

All i know is that this family has nice genetics.

I would definitely like to see Staal develop a bit more offensively and have a little more snarl to his game but otherwise he will be a top 10 defensemen in the next 2-3 years.

his contract should be a Rangers’ priority.

Top ten?

This guy is a already top 5 defensive defenseman. Matter of fact i can’t name anyone who is better defensively. This guy is a stud and should be signed to a lifetime contract! If there is anyone on this team that deserves a lifetime contract it’s him. Big, strong, and durable. He’s gonna be a GREAT Ranger for life!!

well thats debatable

and believe me, I agree but I feel Staal is not well known or not widely perceived as a top 10 d-man in the NHL. this may be due to the fact that the Rangers D is bad as a whole or that his offensive game is not top 10, but I have never heard him being referred to as a top 10 D-man.

when you talk top 10 D-man, you will hear Doughty, Green, Seabrook, Lidtsrom… but staal is never mentioned in the same breadth. case in point, he was not chosen for the Olympics.

I would love to see him recognized for his defense.

nevermind, I missed your "defensive" D-man qualifier

still, defensive D-man are underrated and underappreciated in the NHL

All these guys where chosen for their offensive production. Defensively? None of those guys you listed are better than Marc Staal.

i agree, but...

eliminating Rangers fans who see him every day, who else agrees with this notion. I don’t have the answer but I am curious as I think Staal is vastly under appreciated.

Totally agree. Everyone looks at offensive numbers when it comes to being recognized especially for the Norris Trophy.

Doughty, Lidstrom and Seabrook all had higher Defensive GVT values higher than Staal this year. (GVT = goals versus threshold, similar to WAR – Wins Above Replacement in baseball)

I like Staal as much as the next guy, and I’ll even give you Seabrook who I think gets covered up by how good Keith is, but to say he’s better than Lidstrom and Doughty, even defensively, is erroneous, IMO.

Going to disagree. I watched Lidstrom in the playoffs and he is showing his age. Dont get me wrong I think Lidstrom is probably the greatest defenseman ever but he made some glaring mistakes in the playoffs.

Right now, at this stage of their career, Stall is the better player defensively.

Small sample size aside,

Lidstrom still took on the hardest assignments Detroit had to offer and had the highest advanced +/- on the team this season. Now, Staal did the same thing for the Rangers, so the argument could be made I suppose.

Still not giving you Doughty.

Lidstrom: The Greatest Defenseman Ever?

Bobby Orr and Doug Harvey have something to say about that…

by Curt S on May 12, 2010 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Certainly Bobby Orr can be considered as the best ever. But since he was before my time I never got the chance to watch him play.

Let me rephrase what i said. I think Lidstrom is the best defenseman I’ve ever seen play.

keep the stats coming

I am curious to see some actual stats because as Rangers fans we tend to rate these players higher than their value actually is. plus it will give us a good idea of what his new contract should be.

I assume he is worth about 3-4 mil?

by truebluesince75 on May 12, 2010 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions

The advanced stats never dictate the actual value of a player, the market dictates that.

In the best interest of the Rangers, he should get 3.5 over something like 6 years, so on the back end of the deal they’re underpaying for him, assuming he keeps improving the way he has shown.

In Staal’s best interest, he takes a short term deal like 2/6m or 3/9m or something and gets his UFA deal when he’s peaking, where he can probably fetch at least 5m, and maybe more depending on how his offense develops.

I wonder if any of you realize...

that defensive partners of Staal are the culprits of any thing “questionable” about Staal’s stats?

The key word in that, is “partners”. I have yet to have seen a capable “partner” on the blue line for Staal’s skill set.

Ill help you there 76 blueshirt....

Chara, Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, Drew Doughty, Chris Pronger, Tyler Myers (this one is close though), Shea Weber, Scott Neidermeyer, Mike Green, and Nick Lidstrom round out the top ten in no particular order. I can easily be missing someone though since this is just off the top of my head…

and then going a bit deeper, comparables to Staal include Brooks Orpik, Ryan Suter, Robyn Regher, Jay Bouwmeester, Brian Rafalski, Dion Phaneuf, etc. I could go on.

Staal is a stud, but we dont need to make him out to be the class of the NHL. I love the guy, but if he was already top 10 in the league he woulda been in Canada for the olympics. It wasnt his age, Drew Doughty made it at 19

by Ahmad Bradshaw on May 12, 2010 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Ahmad you didnt read my post.

Are you saying that Mike Green is better defensively thasn stall?!?! Dion Phaneuf?!?! Are you F-ing kidding me? These guys are horrible defensively. Neidemeyer? Way past his prime. Lidstrom I already talked about. Bouwmeester? He’s been horrible in Calgary. Rafalski? Take him away from Lidstrom and he’s an average defenseman.

Staal should be paid…big time, along the lines of the pay increase his brother Jordan got. He not only is becoming a fast growing reality here, he (IMO) could easily be this team’s franchise player.

I think it has to be in the team’s thoughts to have him wearing the “C”. He is definitely the best player on this team, and will lead this team to greatness.

Glad you found and posted that

- now I don’t have to search for it.

Note that Girardi makes that list – and would be higher if he regularly played with Staal (as it SHOULD BE).

And no Doughty on that list at all.

by dbmaven on May 12, 2010 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions

It's not the end all be all list.

Doughty’s GAON/60 is 1.95, lower than most on the list. His QC is also lower than almost everyone @ 0.029, and his SH numbers aren’t great, so that probably accounts for his absence.

Also of note:

One of the weaknesses in the system I use is that players who play almost every minute of every game together are virtually inseparable (i.e. Phillips-Volchenkov) statistically and both are given a high rating.

Girardi played 45% of his time at EV with Staal and 80% with Staal on the PK. He’s certainly getting the Staal boost, but it is nice that he made the list.

One note here.....

the way the stats are done, epecially the pk part, I think Staal benefits a ton from Henrik. PK wise goalies have wayy more impact then Defensemen, and regardless Staal has a bit better of a safety net than people like Doughty. Kings also play a more up-tempo style

by Ahmad Bradshaw on May 12, 2010 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions

PK team save% when Staal is on the ice – .879
PK team save% when Doughty is on the ice – .870

He got a slight bump, but not much.

What a Guy

Probably my second or third favorite Ranger, behind Dubi and tied with Cally. I mean what can’t he do. Redden and Rozi should just be embarrased to watch him take on the top lines while they are stuck with the 3rd’s. I thought that might have actually made those two “veterans” (and I use that term lightly) play better, but obviously that was a wish for a different star.

Since know one really knows how Sather thinks, I hope to god they lock Staal down for a very long time.

by HolyCow02 on May 12, 2010 11:28 AM EDT reply actions

I’d like to lock him up for 8 years 4-5 mil per… that would be a good contract length… but sather will probably lowball him and make him hold out until a week into training camp…

by Clalicata17 on May 12, 2010 1:27 PM EDT reply actions

Sadly...

ALL of points have merit (particularly the Sather possibly lowballing Staal).

Eight years/$32 million sounds fantastic.

if

sather does what he did with dubinsky, that means we may only get a 2-3 year contract for staal… i don’t foresee that happening, but it’s sather were talking about… most GMs would have locked Staal up by now…

OK i am going to take a risk...

One thing I would like to see him do is bulk up. I think he can be stronger for the battles. Aside from that it is a must to sign him. He is young and he will only get better as he enters his prime. I agree he has not had good parners. Girardi is the best fit for what we had to work with but I can be hot and cold with Girardi. I’ll save those comments for the Girardi day lol.

2/3

2 out of 3 of the Staal’s currently in the NHL already have a Stanley Cup Ring.
I say we keep him with those odds!
/sarcasm

Agree with the majority. Hope Slats locks him up as a franchise player.
I said in another thread that I felt Staal could be Captain after Drury is gone.

by Mike_from_NNJ on May 12, 2010 2:52 PM EDT reply actions

Staal

is as durable as they come. – 1.5 mill
is a leader on and off the ice. – 1.5 mill
is the best defensive defenceman in the league. – 1.5 mill
=4.5 million over 8 years giving him 36 million, 3 million less and 2 years more than Wade Redden. Lets just hope he doesn’t look at that as a slap in the face.

Best player on the team, lock him up long term. Why didnt the Rangers give a 5th rounder for the kid brother? The Father said he has the most talent of all of em, good enough for me.
