NHL News: Congrats to the Blackhawks

CHICAGO - APRIL 07: Members of the Chicago Blackhawks salute the crowd following a win over the St. Louis Blues at the United Center on April 7, 2010 in Chicago, Illinois. The Blackhawks defeated the Blues 6-5. (Photo by Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images)

I would like to take the time to congratulate the Chicago Blackhawks on making it to the Stanley Cup Finals after they swept the San Jose Sharks with a 4-2 win at the United Center earlier this afternoon. Just four more wins and they will become Champions for the first time since 1961 and for the fourth time in their history. They are a young team that plays like a veteran squad, and whether they meet up with the Montreal Canadiens or the Philadelphia Flyers from the East, they are my pick to win Lord Stanley's mug. To me, they just do not seem like they can be stopped.

Taking four out of seven against the Predators, Canucks, and now the Sharks was no easy task. They faced adversity after some rough losses, but they always seemed to bounce back in the series, led by Captain Jonathan Toews. As long as they continue to put the puck in the net, get defensive support from Duncan Keith and company, and Niemi stays consistent, I don't see the Flyers or the Habs beating them in the Finals.

Also, I have very good news to share. It is very likely that I will be headed to one game of the Stanley Cup Finals to cover it live from the arena. Obviously I do not know when and where I will be headed yet since the Eastern Conference Finals are still being played, but looking forward to the experience nonetheless.

Being a fan of two teams is still a major violation of Man Code, but assuming Philly makes the finals, I think we’ll all be Hawk fans for the remainder of the season.

I’m tellin ya, you can be fans of two teams if they only meet once a season. No conflict there. However, if they both reach the cup finals then you’re fucked.

Don’t forget, they have Marian Hossa, so anything is possible. The Hossa Curse!

was thinking the same thing! Canadiens in 7 after they take 3 in a row from Philly.

Now that we cleaned this up, we about 4-5 days to have time to plan, practice, and recoup.
Big Buff, Candy Kane, and Captain Serious deserve statues in their honor.

we’ve done away with numbers 7, 3, and 1… we’re rolling right now. In comparison, Filly had to go through New Jersey, who the always beat anyway and who fizzle in the playoffs, Boston, a number 6 team, and montreal, the number 8 team.

What I find most interesting

Is that alot of Rangers fans nearly demand we have a guy like Orr or Shelley, and call for guys like Avery and Prust that agitate.

Meanwhile, Chicago is basically steamrolling teams by having guys that don’t take penalties, aren’t overly physical, and most importantly, simply outshoot their opponents (1st in the league in SOG, 1st in SOG against). No goons, few guys that play with sandpaper (aka grit), just solid two-way hockey players with a couple of stars mixed in.

I’m quite jealous.

Thanks for the compliment but...

Thats a pretty wrong view. Its true that we don’t take many penalities or fight majors, but we’ve got shizzy lizzies of grit. Ben Eager is our only pure enforcer, meanwhile bolland, brouwer, buff, ladd, hendry, and seabrook are all very tough and gritty players. They just happen to also have skillsets that overshadow their grit. Almost everyone on our team is a 2 way hockey player; kane is pretty much the only non defensively talented forward, but he’s learning positioning and stickwork. The reason why we take so few shots on goal is our possession. We have the puck so often that the opposition rarely has great chances. Whenever we get the puck, we know how to hold onto it with quick accurate passes and excellent skating.
We (Rangers this time) still need a tough guy like Orr or Shelley. Almost every Stanley cup team has players that can deliver crippling checks, and the Rangers don’t have that.

You truly believe the “crippling check” is more important to the Hawks than the ability to outshoot their opponents?

can’t outshoot if you’re getting dominated physically. Part of the game is psychological, if you’re a group of pushovers, like the Rangers team is, opponents won’t be scared to get in your faces and wreak havoc

Oh, yes....

Dustin Byfuglien…who everyone and their mother shot me down for wanting the Rangers to go after.

Buff is taking his game to a whole new level. As much as i love the guy, I wouldn’t have expected this to happen. He’s just supposed to deliver hard solid checks and screen the goalie, not give us 3 out of 4 game winners.

He’s actually been the only difference all series. Great goaltending both sides, solid defense, great puck movement. We were just the team with the hot powerforward

I think Shelley had a big impact on Prust, after he arrived Prusts fights went down and Shelley really picks his spots and usually responds to a challenge not the other way around. There is no need to keep Avery and Voros, Voros is a stiff and Avery is a distraction imo.

by Kmp on May 24, 2010 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions

the Hawks really crash the net another weak spot on the Rangers and a reason I would like to see Byers, Weise and Dupont to get a shot on the roster.

by Kmp on May 24, 2010 12:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I would give my firstborn to have Dustin Byfuglien in Rangers blue. The guy is a huge forward that originally played defense, will sit in front of the net, will hit anything that moves, and seems to be able to put up points in clutch situations.

by Kritikal on May 24, 2010 3:46 AM EDT reply actions

Byfuglien is pretty bad as a Defenseman. In terms of putting up points, it helps to play on a line with Kane and Toews. Byfuglien is a good player, but right now he is in the ideal situation for him.

by NTB on May 24, 2010 8:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed. Think of him kinda like Avery… but with an extra 50+ pounds :P

by Kritikal on May 24, 2010 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH. No. Don’t insult buff by putting him on the same level as Avery. Avery is supposed to be a pest, Buff is the physical force.

…and I’d assume he was originally a defenseman because of his size. Playing on a line with Kane and Toews definitely helps his numbers somewhat, but he does his job particularly well, which is park his huge ass in front of the net and hit everything that moves.

What a tremendous team

Built extremely well, from the twosome at the top, to the #umpteen defenseman.

The only downside to that team is Campbell (Who went Redden on them after signing that contract) and Huet (another albatross).

by Kritikal on May 24, 2010 11:55 AM EDT reply actions

Cambell didn’t really go Redden he went drury. The guy still works hard and contributes both ways. Yes, he’s grossly overpaid, but we can say honestly that we are a worse team without him. Whereas Redden, well, I’d rather have a ball of yarn manning the back.

Hats off the Keith for taking a puck in the mouth, losing FOUR teeth and still finished the game.
That is a hockey player I want on my team.
THese playoffs are hard on Rangers fans……I find myself routing against Montreal so hard, I forget the other team is the hated Flyers…….Let’s go Hawks…..

by NYR94 on May 24, 2010 11:57 AM EDT reply actions

You can’t trade for that kind of commitment. It has to grow within you. The reason why Keith, Seabrook, Toews, Kane, Versteeg, and Buff work so hard is because they developped within the franchise. They are faithful to the Hawks, so they give it their all. We (Rangers) can say that we want to buy this and that player because of their motivation, not many players are willing to sacrifice themselves for a team they’ve only been with for a year.
