Rangers Review: Wade Redden

Let's continue our reviews of the 2009-10 New York Rangers with defenseman Wade Redden.

Wade Redden:

What We Liked: Hard to find something I liked about what I think is still the biggest disaster in the history of this franchise, but I did. What I liked is the two games he was benched for mid-season. It gave Ranger fans a glimpse into what life would be like without a $40M boat anchor. December 17th and 19th, the Rangers managed to reel off two wins without the "two time All Star" and "Best first passer in the game". What a joy it was to watch those games, and know Redden wasn't going to step on the ice and take a bad penalty, create a bad turnover, or fall down.

What We Didn't Like: Too Easy. This is like an empty net goal against a team of nuns.

Highlight Game: November 25th, 2003: Wade Redden scores two goals for Ottawa in a 6-3 win over Atlanta. Sorry, it was the best I could do.

Final Thoughts: If Wade Redden is still a member of the New York Rangers on Opening night, Ranger fans will not only demand a Congressional Inquiry, but probably all join hands and walk into a chopper blade. The silver lining for Hartford fans in the possibility of losing the Wolfpack is that they may only have to suffer one season of Redden, and then he will be Rochester's problem.

What I liked about Redden was that he actually complained when he heard he was benched. Give me a break, Wade. Are you kidding??

By the way, who plays NHL 10 as the Rangers and actually keeps Redden on the team?

First thing I do is demote Redden to Hartford in NHL 10

Demote him?!

He fetches a fortune in trades! I picked up Tanguay and Ranger from TB for him. I think one variation I made him part of my Getzlaf deal too.

I love NHL 10 trades once I traded Redden Potter and 1st round pick for Backstrom and Laich

So when the game automatically makes each team cap compliant for the start of a season, Redden was the guy sent to the minors to make the Rangers cap compliant.

I didn’t even have to do it, the game did it for me. Even the programmers know what a terrible contract that is.

Excellent Post

we could have spent the time nitpicking all the things he did wrong, or even mount a half-hearted defense of Redden (just like he does on the ice). Instead, you cut right to the chase, And i quote:

Sather

The question is, will Sather man up and admit the mistake by sending him to Hartford? That’s a lot of cash for Sather to tell Dolan to eat.

by Broheem NJ on May 25, 2010 10:07 AM EDT reply actions

Its true. Sending him down to Hartford is an admission of their past failure. To reuse an analogy, its like showing a replay of that time you missed an empty net goal against a team of nuns.

would it be missed the same way as Stafen’s missed empty net goal, just for comedic relief?

perfect analysis

I couldnt agree with you more on your analysis of the 6 million dollar WASTE.
If anyone can come up with a worse FREE AGENT signing in NHL history let me know.
On the long list of reasons to fire Sather this is at the top of the list

by newyorkrob on May 25, 2010 10:10 AM EDT reply actions

While he definelty ranks up their with the worst free agent signings, he isn’t the worst franchise mistake. Who is? Hugh Jessiman. It absolutely DISGUSTS me to know that we could have had:
Dustin Brown
Brent Seabrook
Zach Parise
RYAN GETZLAF (no more talk about having 1st line center problems; instead we’d be wondering what to do with all our Stanley cup rings)
Brent Burns
Ryan Kesler
Mike Richards
Correy Perry (Either the anaheim draft team is genius, or they got incredible lucky)
Patrice Bergeron
Shea Weber
David Bakes
Are you feeling sick by now too? If you reach into a bucket with the names of every 1st round pick from 2003, you are almost guaranteed to pick out a good player. Instead, we pick the only guy who didn’t play a single NHL game.

If only.....

I found this on Wikipedia’s bio of Redden.

The 2007–08 NHL season was eventful for Redden. Newly-promoted general manager Bryan Murray attempted to trade Redden to the Edmonton Oilers during the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. Redden turned down the trade proposal.

In February 2008, it was revealed that Redden used the no trade clause in his contract to kill a deal that would have sent him to the San Jose Sharks for Matt Carle and a draft pick.

On July 1, 2008 he signed a six-year, $39 million contract with the New York Rangers. Redden’s performance continued to decline in New York where he faced considerable criticism. One writer for the New York Post even called the contract “the worst in the history of the NHL, if not in the history of hard-cap pro sports.”

Here's a tough one

This week’s Hockey News lists the drafting of Rick Dipietro (and the associated trades) as the worst GM move EVER. Would you have rather signed Redden or drafted DiPietro? Agree or disagree with Hockey News.

disagree..

there was nothing wrong with drafting him.. the GM didnt know he would constantly be injured

I’m with Moshe on this. The error wasn’t in drafting DiP.
It was in signing him to a 60 year contract worth far too many $$$$ (gee – why does that sound familiar???)

by dbmaven on May 25, 2010 6:03 PM EDT up reply actions

No matter who they sign, the Isles will end up underrating them and losing the player. Zdeno Chara anyone?

I hate Redden as much as the rest of you, but this year, among defensemen, only Staal (11) had a better +/- than Redden (8). I can’t make heads or tails of behindthenet.ca’s stats, so maybe someone could tell me how he fared in more advanced +/- statistics.

by XLII on May 25, 2010 12:19 PM EDT reply actions

He had a decent year w/ advanced stats. I’ve tried defending him that way, no one cares. More to the point, his numbers could be duplicated by a lot of guys that aren’t worth $6.5m.

His contract is still a liability, he provides no offense (which is really the root of why everyone hates Redden, even if they don’t realize it. You could live with him if he was still a 40-50 point defenseman) and he’s still ‘soft,’ so he needs to go.

That’s really the bottom line with Mr Redden.

Who cares what his stats are. Have you watched this guy play? The only way he can get an assist is if someone punches him in the mouth, takes the puck from him and goes score.

by Scratch and Snif on May 25, 2010 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions

no, let's elaborate

Don’t pull back! Hit Wade Redden with the truth! Here’s a few of my complaints about his game:

1. He is a poor skater, slow and easily pushed off the puck
2. He has no desire to play physically .
3. Redden’s passing is barely above average; either his mom or his agent came up with that “best first passer in the game” stuff.
4. He allows opposing forwards time and space crossing the blueline, every time. No time was more special than when he allowed Fedorov the room to beat Henrik in game 7 of the ‘09 Ranger-Caps series.
5. His eyebrows make him look perplexed and/or constipated, which distracts his teammates.
6. He doesn’t shoot the puck when the opportunity presents itself.
7. Redden possesses all the emotion and intensity of a decaying corpse while playing hockey.
8. His decent +/- figures were attained by purchasing drugs for the NHL stats office.
9. Redden is unfortunately smart enough to realize than Glen Sather is an idiot.

Prole art threat.

Demoting Redden isnt going to happen. I think it would be wise to let reality sink in and realize our only chance at unloading him is to ignore what he has done, and hope he improves in the offseason and works hard. If his production improves, it may be easier to find a taker. It was a dumb move. Everyone but Slats knew it then, and everyone knows it now. The last place Wade will be in 2010-11 is Hartford. So stop suggesting it.

Also from what I’ve seen he hasnt been as horrible as everyone has been saying. If he was making 700K, we’d consider him a 7th defenseman who did a fair job. He has done some things right. Also he wasnt nearly as much as a liability defensively as MDZ or what Sangs is capable of.

this guy was already in decline the 2 years prior to being signed it was a huge blunder by Slats. Not physical, isnt the passer that got him big money in the first place, always backs in, doesnt clear the crease, has a horrible shot (if u can even call it that) yet by some miracle he ends the season a plus player! Please Slats to Edm for Souray!
