NHL News: Penguins and Capitals to Play Winter Classic 2011
Gee, what a surprise.
So, after these silly little Stanley Cup Finals are over, the NHL can get back to what is important: promoting Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin.
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals will be playing in the Winter Classic on New Year's Day, 2011. Maybe we were hoping against hope the Rangers would get the next WC, fueled in part by Gary Bettman's comments earlier this year that Citi Field would be a potential site for the outdoor game.
The Steelers have a home game on December 23rd, just 9 days before the game would take place. I believe it usually takes the league about two weeks to get the outdoor rink ready for play. I guess no job is too big when it comes to Sidney and Alex.
The official announcement is expected to be tomorrow.
Maybe next year Ranger fans.

de fuck yo? Goddamn it NHL. Fine with Washington but couldn’t you add someone else? You’re really bent on making money aren’t you Betty bett bett bet. Rather than do right by the fans and give the only other american original six team a chance, you go back to pittsburg. Btw, is Canada getting a WC?

Yeah the addition of Crosby yet again is a joke
I 100% get Ovechkin, but Crosby again? Come on Bettman, even you’re better than this …

I'm tired of it
the only people that like Crosby are Pens fans. Any other hockey fan knows he is a crybaby.
Wow guys, personally I will be very excited to see pens vs. caps in the winter classic
there is not much better than Ovech vs. Crosby, and there is no reason that game should not be the game for the winter classic. It’s called putting out the best product. It’s Bettman finally doing something smart, you wonder why this game didnt happen earlier

I think its more the disappointment of the Rangers not being involved yet and the Penguins are getting a 2nd game in 4 years. If the Rangers had already played a Classic then I would love to see this WAS-PIT game 100%. But now that we have to wait at least 1 more year for the Rangers to get involved is a disappointment but I know Ill still be at my tv ready to watch this 1 for sure and its the easy draw for the casual fans who NBC values more than the real fans

+1 good point
i would love to see the Rangers too, but dont blame Bettman for putting this game in the spotlight. If it wasnt the Rangers then this would be my second choice

Rangers vs Caps games have been thrillers. Ovie always kicks it up a notch against us and Hank plays his best games. It would have been sweet

at least i'll be able to enjoy some college football on the 1st this year
i’ve already seen enough of crosby’s bullshit act for one lifetime
"No disrespect to the batter," Figueroa said, "but tacos are good."
Listen, as much as we all probably didn’t want to see this, and prefer to see the Rangers play in one, think about this:
This matchup was inevitable, and the league HAD to make this a matchup early, especially while they are both still young, exciting and the ability to promote them both is still there. As much as we hate it, why not just get it over with? Once this is over there will be ZERO chance this matchup happens again in the Winter Classic, Crosby and the Pens will be long gone in the Winter Classic, and other teams will now get a shot in the Winter Classic.
Another thing to add, I really, really, don’t think it is a stretch to say “well if Crosby gets two Classics, Ovie should get two”. Ovechkin will be back, and hopefully they don’t postpone the Rangers from entering just to have Ovie play a marketable team like New York.
I’m mad about this announcement, but I’m also relieved to have it over and done with.

Calgary will host Montreal in McMahon Stadium in February.
So make this the first ever dual Winter Classic year. I don’t know what Bettman is thinking, but maybe the pressure he faced getting Canada involved got to him. The Winter Classic should be a once a year deal. On the other hand, possibly, the Cal-Mon game will not be promoted as a Winter Classic, but just as an outdoor game. There is no way NBC will show it, as they are fearful of one Canadien team involved, so two involved will easily have no support from NBC.
The official announcement for both games is expected to be tomorrow. Hopefully things will become clearer then.
