Valiquette signs with CSKA Moscow of KHL
The Spiderman of Hockey as we know it is no longer based in New York City.
From Lauri at Beyond the Blueshirts:
"Sovietsky Sport is reporting that New York Rangers goaltender Steve Valiquette has signed with CSKA Moscow of the KHL."
...
"This will be the second stint in Russia for the 32-year old Valiquette, who spent the 2005-2006 season with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl. He’ll join Rangers 2009 seventh round draft pick Mikhail Pashnin on CSKA Moscow."
My take: Sad to see Spiderman go, but at 32 and with the Rangers apparently having fun playing backup goaltender roulette, I don't blame him one bit. It's cold over there, sure, but they pay well and I'm sure he will play well too.
Let's hear it in the comments on this whole back-up goalie situation.

I'd like to see CJ back-up Lundqvist...
…so long as he sees 15-20 starts in net. Otherwise, keep him in the AHL, where he’s guaranteed to gain experience, and sign Auld to a longer contract. Both are capable back-ups, but CJ is a potential starter in years to come.
If we want to keep Lundqvist in top form, we need to give him more rest next season. Whoever our back-up is will need to play a more involved role.
I’ll miss Vally, but he just wasn’t cutting it. Best of luck to him in the KHL.
I would like to see them give Chad Johnson a serious shot. Although I wouldn’t be terribly unhappy if they brought Auld back, as he is a competent option. Either way this is an often overlooked but important hole the rangers need to patch up with a permanent solution
Whoever they go with, I think we can all agree that if the rangers ever plan to make a serious playoff push they need to rest Hank way more than they have been.

See ya, Steve
Time for either Chad Johnson or Alex Auld to take his place…..

I’d rather see Ocho Cinco do a full year as the starter in Hartford and have a veteran backup like Auld.

i’d keep auld, i do like him, but i’d really love the rangers to get an upgrade like johan hedberg. he is the man and he kept atlanta in a lot of games. i was watching highlights of him in his playoff run with pittsburgh back in the day. forgot how solid he was
Welcome to the Banter unkool, I can relate

Valiquette Valiquette Valiquette Valiquette
you never let us down bro. LIVE IT UP IN MOTHER RUSSIA!!!!!
Fleury's comeback could only be trumped by Leetch
I always liked Vally. He was never the best goaltender, but a total crowd favorite.
The height/lankyness, the spiderman helmet, nice-guy attitude, pre-game rituals, shutting out the flyers, the gigantic rebounds….Well, maybe not so much those, but still. He was a good guy.
His time was obviously up here though. I hope he is treated well in Russia.
"And so the Ranger's season comes down to Oli Jokinen"
Blame Torts?
Vally was much better under Renney than he was under Tortorella. I have to believe that Torts is at least partly to blame in two ways: (1) team didn’t stress defense-first as much under Torts — led to more odd-man rushes, etc.; and (2) given Tortorella’s management “style” of berating players, I suspect he didn’t do much to boost a goalie’s confidence — maybe it doesn’t impact a superior, super-confident goalie like Lundquist who had already achieved so much before coming to the NHL, but for a guy on his second-to-last chance, on the cusp of making it in the NHL, that treatment can’t be helpful.
Good Luck Vally
But I’m happy to see him go. The Rangers got the very best of Vally. Already close to his mid 30s he has reverted back to what he always was, a journeyman GK
Glad he’s no longer with the Rangers as he was never really good enough to be a backup on a legit contender. Glad to see he landed on his feet and still has a job though. He should probably do pretty well in Russia.
Let’s get Auld in as a backup and keep developing Trade Bai … Chad Johnson in Hartford
good luck vally ..
hope he plays well now its time to bring bavk auld. dont trust johnson yet ..

Good Luck Valliquette. You were very good for us when you were here…personally I think Torts scared you, have fun in the KHL lol
