The United States will open up their world play today at 2:30 against the mighty power of England. The United States--who will be hoping to get out of the group stages since for the first time since 2002--start off the World Cup with a bang.

I don't care if you think soccer is stupid (cough, Jim, cough) and I don't care if you don't want to participate in this open game thread; but this is the World Cup. It's the biggest stage in sports, period. They estimate that one billion people will watch the events this year. That's not a typo, one BILLION.

Anyway enough from me. Use this as your open game thread for the US game, and the rest of the matches today!

Going by the numbers

Since we’re talking about numbers….

75% of US adults have read a bible passage in the last year.

Justin Beiber has been the top trending topic on twitter this year

American Idol has been the #1 rated show on TV for 6 years running – I feat no other show has ever accomplished.

Should we expect these non-Ranger topics to get open threads too???

In defense of the event, I woke up at 7:00 to watch “Korea Fighting”, and will probably have the game on later. Still to put this event in perspective. The World Cup, that happens once every 4 years and is “the biggest event in the world” watched by a BILLION people will rake in, best possible result, $3.5 billion. The NFL made $8 billion last year, broadcasting a sport that we are pretty much the only people who watch.

You don't have to join the thread if you don't want to

no need to be a jerk about it though. This is the dog days of the off-season, we provide daily coverage of everything New York Rangers. A few days of USA coverage won’t kill you. Especially since it’s the World Cup.

but asking if we’re going to open up a “Justin Beiber” thread is being a bit of a jerk. There is not point to be made there. It’s the world cup, it merits an open thread. No need for comments like that.

Easy Now

As I said in my post, I was up at 7AM watching the world cup, and plan on watching the US game later today. If you want to have an open thread, cool. It’s the off-season, it’s a big event for the country, and most importantly – it’s your blog!
If anything, I was poking a little bit of good natured fun at the logic that since over a billion people will watch this event there should be an open thread. As I’ve already pointed out, there are plenty of better jusifications for it. Hope that clears things up.

And i am not being sarcastic, that is the first thing i noticed when I started watching some world cup games. I compared to the ultimate trap hockey. Too often players are content giving up control of the ball just protecting scoring areas

We haven’t seen any good teams yet. English soccer sucks, they just counter and cross, Argentina is close to decent. You have to watch brazilian or spanish soccer. Its all about possession, beautiful passing, and artistic ball movement.

There should be no ties in sports, especially the “most important tournament in the world”. Weakness and bulsshit? Modesty and realism. If the US goes all out and attacks, they lose, don’t get a single point, and may not even get past the group stages. Instead, we play a moderate game, assure ourselves a point, keep England within range in the rankings. Does Uzbekistan expect to beat Russia in the IIHF WC? They’d be oblivious if they did. They’d play defensive hockey, try to steal a tie. Same thing happened here.

by CrazyRangerFan on Jun 14, 2010 1:12 AM EDT up reply actions

this tie between england and the usa got me thinking about the shootout in hockey…i think its run its course with nhl and it brought some interest to the game but i think its unfair to make a shootout win equal a win in regulation…i personally think we should get rid of the shootout and after a 4 on 4 we move on to a 3 on 3 and make a win 3pts and a tie 1pt so the teams will for sure go for the win and not just the tie…what do you guys think?

by nutz_35 on Jun 12, 2010 5:55 PM EDT reply actions

NO TIES. they are horrible. Make it 3 pts for regulation win, 2 pts for overtime or shootout win, and more teams will stop playing for the shootout. hopefully.

by Ahmad Bradshaw on Jun 12, 2010 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions

20 mins of 4-4, 20 mins of 3-3. Its almost impossible that nothing happen in that time. After that, if it is required, a shootout. But ya I agree, 3 points for regulation win, 2 points for OT win, 1 point for OT loss, 0 for reg. loss

wait, 20 mins of both? for regular season games? 40 minutes of “extra time”? i don’t think that would ever happen. I think they would max out at 10, and im not even sure they would go that far

by Ahmad Bradshaw on Jun 12, 2010 11:31 PM EDT up reply actions

exactly. The shootouts would stay, so there would never be ties, but shootouts would happen so rarely that no one would complain about them.

possibly 100 minutes for a regular season game? Good luck w/ that. The time & number of players then shootout is fine, what needs to change is the points. 2 pts for regulation win & 1 pt for OT/SO win. Problem Solved. Losing should not be rewarded cus thats just cheap and doesnt make sense

Soccer is only slow if you’re watching bad teams. Baseball is not only slow, its not a sport. How much time do they spend actually moving in baseball? 10 mins total? 2000 feet walked or run? Soccer players can run as much as 12 miles a game for the full 90 mins.

Well the Wells' and Sabathia's of the world probably don't run much

but guys like Nolan Ryan used to run probably as much as soccer players do.

Maybe go get hit in the arm with a 99mph fastball..then walk it off. Or maybe a catcher who gets hit in the chones with a bouncing 95mph.

You gotta be kidding calling these soccer players tough. These flopping babies crying after someone breathes on them..and its all of them.

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeit

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 13, 2010 8:28 AM EDT up reply actions

...

I understand where you’re coming from with the whole flopping and acting like babies, but then again it’s a part of the sport – trying to get cards drawn… Just like basketball players and the show they put on, you gotta deal with it. However, saying soccer players might as well be wearing tutus just goes to show your level of ignorance. These guys play year-round and piss on the amount of work baseball players put it.

“Guys like Nolan Ryan used to run PROBABLY as much as soccer players do”…

You can’t be serious? So what if ball players run posts for practice, you don’t think soccer players run multiple miles each day? And that doesn’t even include the amount of running they do in the actual game.

“Maybe go get hit in the arm with a 99 mph fastball.. then walk it off” – how about going and getting cleated in the thigh, kicked in the ribs, or head-butted to the temple and then get right back up to RUN it off. You’re forgetting something here, baseball players get to hang-out in the dugout half the game, not soccer players, and they get one break for the entire game while not being able to sub in and out like most other sports.

I hate to continuously call out your posts ‘Free’, honestly I do, but someone has to.

I say that baseball is not a sport because a sport requires athletes. If chubby players can survive, even thrive, its not an incredibly athletic sport. Baseball players would be outclassed by athletes from nearly every other sport short of golf, which I also think is more of a game than a sport. Both baseball and golf require lots of skill, just not that much athleticism.

the level of ignorance was already stated when stiff called baseball

not a sport. Anything right after that, basically ignorance is the name of the convo here, isn’t it.

I know what goes on in soccer. I know what goes on in baseball.

Just cuz you bang heads, or get cleated (which happens in baseball, did you know that?) doesn’t make it more of a sport. All that stuff you mentioned doesn’t compare. If the dude got hit hard enough in either sport, they’re out of the game anyway.

Yea, baseball players run. Not all are fat, like stiff said.

LOL at trying to call me out from the peanut gallery again. You clearly just quoted but a few pieces and tried to run with it…but that’s really nothing knew for you is it, I guess…..

Yes, of course baseball players run, but to claim that Nolan Ryan PROBABLY runs as much as a soccer player is far from the truth and the definition of an ignorant statement.

They get their just desserts though. Dani alves is a notorious diver, he got fouled in the box in the champions league semi final, but it seemed like he was diving, so the ref gave him a yellow instead of a penalty shot. We ended up losing that game and losing the series on 1 goal. If we had scored that penalty shot, we would have definitely win.

For any of you knocking the World Cup...

If you don’t care to watch that’s completely fine and your decision. However, if you’re knocking on the tournamnet and the sport you might need a serious reality check. What other ball (puck, bat etc.) can you take anywhere in the world and any kid will know exactly what to do with it? Big deal, that’s only because it’s the oldest and cheapest sport you say? Ok, then let me ask you this, what other sport has stopped wars all over the world just so people can watch this tournament?

It’s sad, but as Americans we can’t and probably will never see how important this game really is.

by one-bar on Jun 13, 2010 6:20 PM EDT reply actions

I think we will at some point. We need a phenom to come out of this country and encourage the youth to keep on playing soccer. Freddy adu would have done the job, but he fizzled into mediocrity.

I agree

USA definitely needs a star to break out in order for soccer to be taken seriously in this country. The only problem with that is all these gifted kids are taught growing up to play baseball, football, and basketball because that’s what sells in America and it’s all that’s on TV.

We’ve disgraced this game so much we don’t even call it by it’s true name, we decided to give it another sport instead.
