Around SBN: Lakers Should Trade Andrew Bynum So He Doesn't Go To Waste

Let's Sign John Madden

Rangers do not have a lot of cash to spend this summer, but one guy I would like to see on the team is Chicago's John Madden.

Yeah....he was a Devil and No he is NOT a Bobby Holik....(over paid, limited talant and no output)

Madden has heart and plays all out every shift and he could teach our young talent a lot more than Drury seems to be doing.

Not sure how much a Madden goes for, but Chicago can not afford him and he may be a steal.

Last thing I would want to see this summer is a big money, long term contract for an average player.....and looking back at Sather's track record, let's keep it simple.....short term deals, moderate salaries and more bang for the buck......

I would say most agree with keeping the UFA signings to short term moderate deals, but for the money we would give madden I would prefer to keep prospal. Your assessment of Madden is right on, all heart player and he did a great job mentoring some of the young guys on chicago this year, but prospal brings the same heart and desire with much more offensive output. I think that Drury and (hopefully) prospal can provide enough veteran leadership and lead by example play for the young guys that we are all praying make the team this year.

Madden could be acquired for a bit under 2 mil. He’ll retire soon so we don’t have to worry about long contracts.

And if we bring in our young guns, he could assist in their mentoring.

I absolutley love the idea of bringing somebody in that used to play for a rival of ours or beat us in big spots. Its worked so well before…. Holik, Gomez, Drury, Trottier. Lets go out and get Scott Stevens while were at it

we dont need any more 3rd or 4th line players….it would be a waste of money

by nutz_35 on Jun 13, 2010 11:17 PM EDT reply actions

yea we want to save the third/fourth line spots to work in the young players, and madden is similar to drury in a lot of ways just worse

by Ahmad Bradshaw on Jun 13, 2010 11:33 PM EDT reply actions

So………………according to nyrangerfan521, we should never go after a rival’s players?
Trottier never player for the Rangers, but he was signed to coach….and we know how that turned out…..
So, in 94’………….we should have never signed Mike Keenan who coached the Flyers.
Or Glen Healy or Gregg Gilbert from the Islanders.
With thinking like this, I think we have found a replacement for Glen Sather

by NYR94 on Jun 13, 2010 11:41 PM EDT reply actions

i was thinking the same thing about his comment, just didnt have the energy to argue it…

by Ahmad Bradshaw on Jun 13, 2010 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Look its just one of my theories about all sports that teams shouldnt go after guys that consistently played well against them when with a rival team or any other team for that matter. I think we can all agree that every Ranger fan hated Gomez, Holik or Drury (that game tying goal in game 5 still burns me) before the Rangers signed them. If you want to go after role players from rival teams that will fill a 3rd or 4th line need for you then i have nothing against that, I am just totally against going after guys that have consistently burned us in the past. I think this applies to all sports not just hockey and obviously there will be some exceptions but i just wouldnt do it.

Madden is a terrible idea

So NYR94 believes that John Madden is the answer….and wishes to insult others for having the nerve to remind him that aging, expensive fourth-liners are the worst possible direction for this team to go in. Keep trotting out the 1994 Cup while you’re at it, but the last thing this team needs to do is clog up its roster with more aging, overpaid, underproducing veterans.

No ex-Devil has prospered in the Ranger uniform, and there have been plenty—Bruce Driver, Bobby Holik, John Maclean, Scott Gomez, Bobby Holik—so why not pay attention to the results of recent history, be patient, and wait for the energy of the Rangers’ youth to make its case in training camp this year. Madden will be 38 next year and is well worth staying away from. He’s a luxury that only a top-tier team can afford to carry on its roster.

Moves like this qualify NYR94 as Glen Sather’s true philosophical heir, so watch where you point that tar-laden brush, dude. A front-office strategy that worked once in 1994 has been an unqualified failure ever since.

Prole art threat.

Not expensive but definitely aging. He served his purpose in Chicago while he still had a few miles on him. I guess you could sign him for real cheap as a backup guy.

I love a good debate….
But to just blow off an idea because Madden was a Devil is laughable……
So…………. we can only sign players that played for teams we like?
Please, get me list of the teams on this list…….

Shanahan?…surprised no one said that yet!

I would rather they...

… bring in Shanahan (which I know will never happen) then Madden. The team is already stuck with Drury (who is better, NOT cheaper). Brodie Dupont is a youngster that can play a Madden-style, who is physically stronger and has put up better minor league stats than Madden.

absolutely NOT. I like the guy would love to have him instead of Drury. But to be honest he is a waste of a roster spot. Would much rather have the young guys playing instead of him.

by CrazyRangerFan on Jun 14, 2010 12:30 AM EDT reply actions

Holik

was a better player than Madden.

Holik could play both ends well, Madden plays one well.

I’d rather stick to the youth.

by Peterman700 on Jun 14, 2010 12:36 AM EDT reply actions

Noooooo!!

Just what we need another guy who can’t score! We’re already paying a guy $6.5 mill to do the same thing Madden can. Go with youth! We need to find out which one of the kids can play.

by Rangers fan in Tampa on Jun 14, 2010 9:32 AM EDT reply actions

Agreed

The problem with Madden is not that he isn’t a good player. The problem is that his signing would make Chris Drury incredibly redundant.

by Lunkwill Fook on Jun 14, 2010 10:07 AM EDT up reply actions

We’ll trade Madden for Drury then. If they ask about the money, we’ll tell them that it’s a typo.

“Ignore that.”

Depends on who else they get

Madden vs Prust..I don’t really see a gigantic difference, in fact I’d rather have Prust.

If Madden’s cheap, and for some reason Prust is more expensive, they yea..why not.

Then again if they’re going with the kiddies, then F Madden

was just thinking that

by Conway on Jun 16, 2010 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions

No one player will fix this team……
This team has ZERO leadership…….coaches need to check Drury’s pulse on the bench during games to make sure he is still alive.
Callahan would make a better Captain.
My point about Madden, was he knows how to lead a team….on and off the ice, and if we could pick him up cheaply and for short term, why not?

by NYR94 on Jun 15, 2010 9:11 AM EDT reply actions

Because he eats a roster spot that prevents advancing any of our young guys.
Because Drury is a more offensively talented version of Madden, and unless a miracle happens, Drury goes nowhere.

As for Callahan being captain, I don’t exactly see him barking up and down the bench too.

agreed you would have to look at Dubi, I think before Cally, plays with fire likes to fight Richards which is a big plus!

by Kmp on Jun 15, 2010 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Leadership is beyond what happens on the ice.

I appreciate the fire that Dubi/Cally show, and that Drury doesn’t, but unless you’re in the locker room and on the road with the team, day by day, nobody has the slightest clue who the true leaders on the team are.

Henrik needs to become a Captain, just like Luongo. Hank is by far from what we have seen the true leader on and off the ice. keep in mind from what we have seen from a fans point of view.

by CrazyRangerFan on Jun 15, 2010 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions

An assistant captain sure, but I think the person who wears the “C” should be vocal both on the ice and the bench, and Hank can’t do that.

by Hoggo on Jun 15, 2010 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Hank doesn’t even need the A. He’s proved over the past 4 years that he leads with his play.

by Scratch and Snif on Jun 15, 2010 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions

has madden ever even worn an A? much less a C

by Conway on Jun 16, 2010 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions

The fact that I dislike the Devils has nothing to do with why I mentioned the fact that ex-Devils play poorly in the Ranger uniform….rather it has to do with the incontrovertible statistical evidence that every former Devils player poached by the Rangers has not matched their previous level of play while they were a member of the Rangers.

My main point is that a 38-year old fourth-liner who costs the Rangers between 1.5 and 2 million dollars is pretty much the dumbest suggestion I’ve seen in the offseason so far. It doesn’t matter who the player had played for in the past.

Prole art threat.

i completely agree. our teams already stacked with 3rd/4th liners. i rather give mza or stepan a spot than madden

Are we even sure he’s not retiring? Very few teams would want to add his salary onto the cap. He might be one of the guys who hang up the skates later on in the season.

Exactly

The reasons being given for signing Madden, were the same resons why Valeri Kamensky, Stephane Quintal and Sylvain Lefebvre were signed. And Holik, but at least he tried.
