Sorry for being late had to create a new account.
First thing I really would to say is thanks for having me tonight
Second I think it is safe for Ranger fans to put away the concerns about poor drafting as Gordie Clark and CO have turned things around so if they allow the prospects to develop there will be a better tomorrow

The Original Six matchup will be the first for a home opener since the Blueshirts faced Montreal on Oct. 6, 2005. The last time the Rangers played a home-opener against the Leafs was 55 years ago — back in the actual Original Six era on Oct. 19, 1955.

Right but here’s my question: why is this coming out NOW. He scored 50 back in early March (I forget when the regular season for the OHL ended), and he was still unknown back them. SOMETHING had to happen for everyone to wake up. The situation is just odd if you ask me.

maybe even more important than who goes first or second overall, since he shakes up the rest of the draft.

I agree, but it’s possible,
ATL could take Campbell and someone else could decide Taransenko’s a better risk than Connolly.
I don’t think that would justify anyone getting fired is all.

20-28 with a .902 sv% is hardly setting the world on fire. He played better down the stretch, but he still allowed 4 or more in 7 of 17 games, and also posted a .900 or worse in 7/17.

Defense can explain the GAA, not the sv%. Edmonton’s D was way worse and Deslauriers posted a quite similar .901, and Deslauriers is generally regarded as not good.
He’s young, so he can improve…but I wouldn’t call Pavelec the answer quite yet.
Tampa could take Campbell as well..but I don’t think Yzerman’s going to go that route.

Hi Jess…I visit your blog almost everyday.
Do you think this upcoming training camp is likely the most important one for Sanguinetti? If he doesn’t crack the line-up out of camp…do u think his future with NYR will be hanging by a thread?
and how about guys like Byers and Dupont? whats the future looking right about now?
Gut feeling is that Sanguinetti is one the Rangers appear to have gone south on with the development of Del Zotto. It is a mistake in my eyes because Sangs has a better shot.
Byers this is his make or break camp but if the Rangers have Prust and Shelley then he has no role
Dupont is a question mark as he has been slow to develop. I think he is going to be passed by

You do NOT trade roster players to move up in the draft. You trade prospects and picks. If the Rangers trade a roster player to move up, I will mutiny.

Hey Jess. Love the work you do. I whole heartedly agree that El Nino should be the Rangers target, but It seems unlikely that Niederreiter will slip to #10 for the Rangers. I want the Rangers to trade up to get him, but at what point does it become too much? If they can’t get him, who do you want? Tarasenko? Skinner? Johansen? Do you trade down and try to nab Etem?
What about Kabanov? I know his father is a little crazy, but the kid’s got talent. If it wasn’t for that wrist injury and his psycho father, he’d be sitting pretty in the top 5.

To me Ryan Johansen is the sleeper pick of the top part of the draft, he came on at the end of the season while Nino was getting all the ink. in the playoffs RJ was the better player so if he is there at 10 grab him.
2nd choice wold be Etem who is very underrated

Alright since it got lost I have to ask this: Why did the Skinner hype start so late? He was a 50 goal scorer in the OHL but wasn’t even on the radar at the end of the regular season? I know he has skating issues and I think he’s overrated, but do you think he’s a top 10 pick?
"Are you really Wade Redden?"-Jim
I do not think Skinner fits with what the Rangers are trying to do, the Rangers are looking at build a good skating team at all positions from Kreider to Kundratek so you need to keep adding players who fit what you already have

tarasenko?
watsup guys, hey jess. its draft time again!
part of me really wants that highly skilled, exciting, russian blue-chip prospect back in the rangers system that we had with alex cherepanov, which sucks that hes not with us anymore. Now i looked up and down all the skilled (the ones projected to go in the top 2 rounds) russians available at this draft and came away with Tarasenko, Galiev, Kuznetsov and Kabanov. personally i think that after all of his shenanigans this past year, kabanov isnt going in the first round but could in the second, where the rangers should definitly grab him, but he’s a whole other story. the way it looks, at least in my head that if the rangers go russian and offensively skilled, Tarasenko is the way to go. he oozes offensive skill, is fairly well built package and can fill some of the void the organization has in the wing department. minus the whole russian factor and comming here to play, what are your thoughts? guys?
I do not see the Rangers going Russian this year as Clark has shown he wants size and grit out of his picks.
The biggest surprise I got last season was Kreider’s defensive skills and willingness to go into traffic.
That is what Stepan does, that is what Bourque does, that is what Werek does and that is why I believe the Rangers will continue to stock players who think alike.

If McDonagh does not sign by the end of camp is it safe to say he does not want to play for the Rangers?
With graduations, other underclassmen leaving for the pros, and now Stepan effectively a done deal, there’s little chance of Wisconsin getting back to the Frozen Four.

Jess always a pleasure having you answer questions, but this will be my last one:
Emerson Etem seems to be an underrated player that might slip to the 10-15 range. Say Nino and Connolly could be gone by number 10, how low do you think the Rangers could trade down to get Etem? The Rangers number 1 need seems to be goal scoring, and I liked your justification to avoid Skinner, but you realistically see the Rangers trading down to the 13-15th spot for maybe a few more picks to get Etem? Also a follow up: can Etem make the Rangers out of camp like Nino potentially could?
Thanks again guys can’t wait for friday!
"Are you really Wade Redden?"-Jim
I would trade down if I could know I was getting Etem who is vastly underrated in my eyes.
I think he still needs to develop though so no I do not see him as making the jump.
But you know I would keep an eye on Ethan Werek. Nobody really talks about him but since March all he has focused on has been making the Rangers this year.
He is perhaps the smartest prospect I have ever dealt with so he I think is going to surprise many people before all is said and done

Stepan and Kreider are better for the wings especially Stepan who is very weak on face offs
Johansen is actually a winger but is listed as a center but he played both in Portland.
And One more Winterhawk tidbit: while everyone is talking about Nino and Ryan, there was a 3rd member of what was called the “Four Letter Word” Line in Brad Ross. Ross is a Avery clone with better offensive skill and I would gamble a 3rd – 4th round pick on him because he was the pest of the year in my eyes.

No I do not think he would have been a superstar as he was a smaller player than most realize.
I think he would have been a good dependable player but not a superstar

You know I have no idea but you are right if you look over the Ranger’s history their very best superstars have been defensemen and goalies.
I can not explain it but that is how it has been.

Oh well Mleetch great minds I suppose do think alike
The Portland Winterhawks I am biased as they are my home team and I use them as my home base in the WHL (86 minutes and I get to sleep in my own bed).
But next season the Hawks if they return their top players will be a serious WHL contender

I like Forbert because he is quietly getting a lot of praise from among the scouts. He is just beginning to develop and has all the tools. He is still green but man he offers some scary potential to be good.
The USA Under 18 team is going most likely see half the roster drafted this year. It is that good

what do we think about brett connolly? is that hip injury he has as bad as having it in the middle of your nhl career, or is having it at that age not as threatening?
Well he did well enough at the combine that most expect him to go no later than 7th so I would say his hip passed muster with the scouts

It is not the work ethic as much as the system has broken down since the fall of the Soviet Union. The Russians are not investing in their youth programs like everyone else has and so the Russians have fallen behind.
A more serious problem not only for Russia but the Eastern European nations is the actions of some of the agents. Who do not have any real care for their charges just how much money they can make off them.
They tell these kids “Go here and you will get ice time” and blow chances to become real players.
David Kveton is the best example as he had a chance to become an NHL playmaker but he was given some bad advice and look where he has disappeared to
