2010 NHL Draft: Live Chat With Jess Rubenstein Tonight at 8:30!
Tonight at 8:30 EST, Jess Rubenstein will join us for a live chat here on Blueshirt Banter. He'll take your questions
about the draft, what he thinks the Rangers might do, and anything else you might want to know about the prospects.
For those of you that missed it, we did one last year, and it was a huge success. Ironically, the first question in last year's chat was about Chris Kreider.
Hope you will join us tonight, you guys know Jess is all over it when it comes to young players, so this is a great way to get ready for the big weekend in the NHL.
FYI, we'll do the live chat "open thread" style, you can just post your question and the page will automatically refresh with replies.

I deleted his comment. If you don’t agree with Jess, and some don’t, that’s fine. But when the man agrees to come on here and talk to us, he is our guest, and I won’t have people insulting our guests like that. This isn’t the HF Boards.

hey guys i really want the Rangers to make a real push for Nino.........
what is the chance that Sather gets aggressive here and trades up for him? Cuz he def isnt dropping to us at #10
by giantsNYrangers on Jun 21, 2010 10:15 AM EDT reply actions
That’s a double ended question. What are you ready to part with to trade up? It’s going to take more than a draft pick.
by Dave Shapiro on Jun 21, 2010 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions
It's almost triple ended.
How far are you going to move up? Because at a certain point, Nino becomes less attractive than guys like Fowler/Gudbranson/Gromley.
I like Nino, but other than someone like Sanguinetti, I wouldn’t want us to be that aggressive, if he falls, he falls.

I hear people willing to give up Dubi to move up. To that I say: Can I please have what these people are smoking?
I have no problem trading Dubi, but not to move up in the draft. To move up, you trade picks and prospects, not roster players who are 23, cost controlled, and consistent 40-point third liners.
by Dave Shapiro on Jun 21, 2010 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions
I object to Dubinsky being called a 3rd liner. And agreed..you only trade Dubinsky for a better version of him, not for hope.

Until he shows me 50 points, he’s a third liner.
by Dave Shapiro on Jun 21, 2010 10:56 AM EDT up reply actions
44/69 * 82 = 52 pts. That he missed 13 games is unlucky.

I want to see it on paper first. Yes, I’m selectively choosing when I want to use metrics to make a point, and I’m calling myself out on it, but regardless, I want to see him do it before I start calling him a legitimate second line guy.
by Dave Shapiro on Jun 21, 2010 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions
And FWIW, There’s few (if any, I’m not checking) teams that have a top 6 who all are over 50 pts.

by George E. Ays on Jun 21, 2010 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions
Oh, by all means 50 is an arbitrary number that just makes me feel better. I just want to see him put up some more points, but that could also be attributed to the quality of teammates not named Marian Gaborik that he has played with.
by Dave Shapiro on Jun 21, 2010 11:05 AM EDT up reply actions
Indeed arbitrary, and the fact that 60 points is basically a 1st liner makes it entertaining as heck. (only 53 forwards had at least 60 pts this year)
I completely agree that Dubinsky needs to produce even more as he starts to enter his prime here, but he’s a solid 2nd liner already. (T-112th in ppg among forwards)
So there. Or something.

I would also like to see a bit more consistency during the season, instead of these long stretches without a point, but that’s just personal preference.
by Dave Shapiro on Jun 21, 2010 11:23 AM EDT up reply actions
4 games was the longest this year, and just once. His “inconsistent” stretches this year came in the goal department, but points wise he was way more consistent than, say, Callahan.
Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay
by George E. Ays on Jun 21, 2010 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions
But Callahan is untouchable!!! Don’t bring logic into the equation!!
I know what the stats say on Dubinsky (and I meant goals in my previous post, not points), but I there’s just something missing, and it’s tough to really quantify it.
by Dave Shapiro on Jun 21, 2010 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions
That I certainly agree, he’s not as good as he can be. But at 23, that’s often true.
Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay
by George E. Ays on Jun 21, 2010 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions
to start to quantify it though
He doesn’t shoot enough. 18 games with 1 shot, 7 more with zero shots. His overall total is still top 125, but if he gets into the 200 shot range like Callahan, he’ll probably get to where he needs to be.
It’s pretty promising that he went from 54% offensive starts to 48% this year, and still increased his scoring.
Ok, that’s enough hijacking.

just out of curiosity that makes cally a 3rd liner as well in your mind, correct?
by Michael Gleich on Jun 21, 2010 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions
Yes. I think Cally, although extremely valuable to this team, is completely overrated.
But I’m tough to please, so take it as it is.
by Dave Shapiro on Jun 21, 2010 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions
Gotta disagree there. Callahan is obviously a high energy, high intensity checker. He’s got lots of heart, and at least he’s consistent in that department. I’d be glad if he pans out to be a consistent 20 goal scorer. I’d compare him to Nate Robinson in that he’s very valuable when it comes to resuscitating a dead team. Can’t expect him to be more than that though and i don’t think anybody rates him more than that.

to take that comparison though you cant call him untouchable and act like you build your team around “Nate Robinson.” Great guy to have in the room, always has energy, but impact on the scoreboard is intermittent
by Michael Gleich on Jun 21, 2010 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions
He’s regarded as completely untouchable by a high majority of fans, and thus he’s rated above Dubinsky, which is just wrong, for a list of reasons that are scattered throughout the comments by me and several others.
I mean…simple example is Cally for Horton. The backlash was incredible. In that, he’s overrated.
He really is a 3rd liner who plays very well on the PK, showed he can contribute on a PP, yet mediocre at best at ES this year. He could be a 2nd liner if they changed his role I think, but that’s what he is.

I say keep Cally and Dubi, and instead just trade the unproven guys like a Werek or a Sanguinetti, keep the proven talent. They play the game the right way too
by Ahmad Bradshaw on Jun 21, 2010 6:34 PM EDT up reply actions
Ugh
I wouldn’t trade Werek for anything (short of a bonafide 70 point guy)….he’s a 19 yr old that may end up being a complete robbery in last years draft
Sangs fine….I’m indifferent to him.

Wasn’t Sanguinetti the fastest skater in the most recent AHL skills competition? Any team could find a use for him…
Yes. He absolutely has value, I just don’t know that he really does with us. I’ll be happy if he’s in our future, I’ll be happy if he fetches our future. Either way is good.

Rotting in Hartford like he is now isn’t helping anyone. He’s a pretty good talent who I enjoyed seeing in his brief call-up with Heikkinen. Sucks that Ilkka bolted overseas, though, but you can’t blame him. He deserved a roster spot and got shit on because of the monstrosity known as Wade Redden.
Exactly…get him or here, or trade him for something of worth.

still holding out hope that Nino, Johansen or Forbort are still there but that depends a lot on if Connolly goes to the isles at 5 i think because if he does Gormley falls to Tampa and makes things more interesting. Seems like everyone is projecting Johansen to Atl,
by Michael Gleich on Jun 21, 2010 12:00 PM EDT reply actions
I think it will also depend heavily on Taransenko, if someone takes the risk with him, he’ll throw a monkey wrench in things.

i agree. i expect hall, seguin, gubrandson, fowler, gormley, johansen, nino as locks in the top 10 with connolly, tarasenko, granlund, forbort, skinner to be in the mix and hoping for atl to take jack campbell.
by Michael Gleich on Jun 21, 2010 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah but as we have learned
the draft never goes as planned. Watch Nino go first overall lol

He could go before all of the defensemen. Florida’s offense is pretty pretty bad, and at least the have Kulikov to look forward to on defense. I wouldn’t be surprised if they go for a forward.

i expect tallon to make plenty of trades and to try and take advantage of the system he knows best (Chicago) and their looming cap problems for guys like Versteeg.
by Michael Gleich on Jun 21, 2010 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions
Florida doesn’t have much to offer though. They’ve only got Kulikov and that Swedish goalie whose name i forgot. Everybody else is pretty useless

by Ahmad Bradshaw on Jun 21, 2010 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions
i would be thrilled with any of the seven locks you mentioned plus connolly, i hope one falls to us.
The best thing for us would be for Jack Campbell to go top 10 so in essence we are picking ninth overall

how would u compare this year's draft class in terms of strength and depth as opposed to recent drafts
I don’t know about the editors, but with my superior mental abilities and recently gained psychic powers, I see that this draft class will be the strongest since 2003’s. 8 years from now, there will 7 allstars from the first round, 13 in total, the Rangers will lose the cup finals to Chicago in 2012-2013, but will win it the next two years, Sidney Crosby will marry his first love, Gary Bettman; the two will take a cruise to Botswana and never come back, whereupon Lady will be named the new Commissioner of Hockey. She will then make a rule change forcing all hockey players to wear scarves and use fairy wands instead of sticks. I have misread the fortune at the end there, but I’m almost positive that everything before the cruise to Botswana will happen. If it does, promptly declare me king of all mortals.

everyone should be happy looking at mocks...
because if the majority of them hold true NYR are walking away with the 3rd/4th best player in this draft in tarasenko. and i’m extremely confident that he is their man this year (especially after listening to clark’s comments about his play and the final interview that will occur in russia between lutchenko and vlad. clark seems very interested.)
clarke’s top 2/3 seem to be connolly, tarasenko, and johansen. connolly and tarasenko could be game changers. johansen is boom or bust. and you can keep nino and skinner. absolutely no way NYR would trade up for nino.
LETS GO RANGERS
I would like
to know more about Emerson Etem. Seems like a great fit for our organization.
If not … Johansen, Niederreiter or Tarasenko would be a nice pick up.
Very excited for tonight’s chat! Everyone better come!!!

Nasville GM Polie said they are not tendering Grebeshkov an offer. Smurf, what are your thoughts on him as a player? someone the Rangers should target?
30-40 point defenseman who can handle 2nd pair duties? Sign me up! Assuming the price is right, he’s a much better fit for this team than, say, Volchenkov.

Good god yes. Over Volchenkov, Michalek, or pretty much any of the UFA defensemen, in a heartbeat.
by Dave Shapiro on Jun 21, 2010 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions
He’s an RFA, we’d have to trade for his rights or give up the pick compensation though, is that right?
Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay
by George E. Ays on Jun 21, 2010 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions
no it’s wrong i believe. if they dont tender him a contract then they no longer retain his rights hence he becomes a ufa.
by Michael Gleich on Jun 21, 2010 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions
Correct (mleetch).
An RFA that the owning club does not submit a qualifying offer to becomes a UFA on July 1.
Alright, thanks. Yeah, he goes to the top of the list of defenseman not named Paul Martin for me.
