Bruins Acquire Horton for Wideman, 15th Overall Pick
Editor's not by Joe Fortunato: Stick salute to Zach S. and Brandon C. for breaking the news, but we wanted to give you a little more details so here is our blurb:
Florida has traded Nathan Horton and Gregory Campbell to the Boston Bruins for Dennis Widemanand the 15th overall pick and another draft pick. Boston still has some major cap problems, as they still need to get a defenseman under contract and get Blake Wheeler signed with just $1.6 million in cap room available. This deal also illustrates that the Panthers are for real when it comes to rebuilding, as they acquire an additional first round pick in a very deep draft.
In Horton, the Bruins address their scoring woes, while dealing from their deepest strength, their defense. Florida, on the other hand, get a solid top-four, potential top-two pairing defenseman that the team can build around for years. Campbell, a 27 year old center, is a role player who netted 17 points (2 goals) in 60 games last season.

Yeah agreed
especially when you think about the fact that the Bruins traded their second first round pick. We don’t have two first round picks

I can only multi task to a point. Between work, Renney becoming head coach, Lisin not being tendered, the trade, etc, I missed the FanPosts on this. Sorrya bout that Zach S. and Brandon C.
this is something that the rangers would never be in position for
with kessel asking for way too much money, they traded him at the height of his trade value and basically got Horton, Seguin, and a couple picks. Sather consistently waits for players to have no trade value before shopping them…. Great move Chiarelli
Not really, they only have $1.6 million to get Wheeler and another defenseman under contract.
by Dave Shapiro on Jun 22, 2010 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions
Nope. No one takes him at that contract with this many goalies available and a 35+ contract.

Gomez had no trade value?

In essence Gomez = Gaborik + McDonagh + $2.1mn of the $5.0mn in cap space that not re-signing Jokinen should yield.

+1
when you look at it like that it makes Chiarelli look like a genius. and thats BEFORE remembering he has ANOTHER first round pick next year out of all this.

Basically for the Rangers they would have had to have given up either Staal or MDZ and their 1st round pick. The Rangers can’t afford that, even if Horton scores 30 goals. There’s a select few in the league I’d trade for with a package centered around Staal or MDZ and a top 10 pick. And Horton ain’t one of them.

first, im glad that we stayed out. but why do you think MDZ/Stall would have been involved? Wideman is a 7th Dman at best
??
Wideman’s two years removed from a 50 pt season. This past year he played Boston’s hardest minutes other than Chara.
He’s easily a top 4 on most teams.

Well I don’t think any team in their right mind, particularly one building on youth and aiming for payroll efficiency is going to take Redden or Rozi. Gilroy has some upside, but I don’t think he’s ever going to be effective at the NHL level as he was in NCAA. I don’t know how high Girardi is perceived, but I see him as a 3rd pair guy on a deeper team. Wideman had a bad year last year, a good one the year before that. And maybe there’s no equivalent Rangers D but if the Panthers aren’t sold on 4 of the 6 D from the Rangers that leaves the aforementioned Staal or MDZ.

Wideman would probably be a number 3 on this team
if not the Number 2 replacing Girardi. Actually he would probably be number 2 on this team. He’s good, very good.

That's what I was thinking
I think MDZ has more upsidet than Wideman and Staal is a better defensive D but after those two the other 4 D for the Rangers would not return the same as Wideman who’s also affordable.

Eventually Wideman would be a number 4 on this team
Once MDZ and Gilroy got some more experience, and maybe even a number 5 if Girardi woke up a little. Regardless he is a talented, talented player.

Right, it took Wideman a couple of years in the NHL to have the year (offensively) that MDZ had as a 19 year old.
And playing on a defensive minded B’s team with someone like Chara might skewer how good he is on D (ahem Wade Redden).
I have high hopes for MDZ hope he QB’s the PP for a long time.

Enjoy the frustrations that is Dennis Wideman next year guys! It’s practically a holiday for Bruin’s fans today. As for our cap issues, we are probably going to dump Ryder or Thomas. Hopefully Wheeler too. I don’t want any of our centers moving and it’s no secret we prefer Hall, but Seguin can play wing if needed. Or Krecji or Bergeron can play wing, either or.
Heh…Wideman is FLA’s problem, not ours.

I used to play in a fog…there’s a rink here that’s under a bubble…it used to fog up so bad I couldn’t see shots from the blueline.

meh...
they’ll just mispronounce his name…“Hohwton”….
And I heard from a Boston fan that there’s a ton of talk that they’re thinking about trading Savard…sorry, Sahvahd.
KEEP LEE!!!
there were rumors of sending him to clb.

yeah for CBJ's 4th overall pick
but there is no way CB will do that straight up, it would be an amazing mistake. Akin to the Redden signing, I’m serious

Interesting
I like the Florida end here.
Another good pick and Wideman can carry the puck and setup plays.
Interesting to see this Florida team with all their young forwards and an actual PP QB.
No, Tambellini is obsessed with the symbolism of having the #1. He might agree to trade the rights to Hall after the fact, but Edmonton will make the #1 pick.

For those who feel this is a deep draft...
Florida now has 5 of the first 50 picks (3, 15, 33, 36,50).
and look at tallon’s history of drafting players, while not great he hit a number of homers. things are looking up in fla
by Michael Gleich on Jun 22, 2010 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions
One would think he goes for Kabanov with either 33/36 (assuming he’s there), with that many picks he’ll take the risk most likely.
They could end up with Fowler/Gudbranson, Etem, Tinordi, Kabanov, and whoever at 50, in theory. That’d be a helluva draft on paper.
