Rangers Analysis: Should The Rangers Pursue Frolov?
When July 1st rolls around the entire sporting world will probably be wondering where LeBron James is going. But unfortunately the New York Rangersaren’t the New York Team that LeBron is supposedly very interested in.
The big name that NHL General Managers will be looking into is Ilya Kovalchuk. The big time, perennial superstar who’s 1-8 career playoff record doesn’t seem to raise any red flags. Kovalchuk will certainly gather a ton of attention, and no matter where he goes—to the KHL or if he stays in the NHL—he will command (and receive) a huge contract.
I don’t think the Rangers should go after Kovalchuk. They have their superstar, and honestly, Marian Gaborik is a better all around player than Kovalchuk is. Yes, Kovalchuk scored more goals, but keep in mind that he wasn’t on the offense starved Rangers; and even if Gaborik does score 10 less goals a year than Kovalchuk, his defensive play is worth its weight in gold. Kovalchuk doesn’t have that defensive frame of mind, and Kovalchuk hasn’t shown me that he has any desire to win.
So while teams are throwing millions of dollars at Kovalchuk; begging him to help their power play, drag them to the playoffs, map out a plan for world peace or whatever else a person who gets 8+ million dollars a year is expected to do; the Rangers should be looking at the other options on the table.
Join me after the jump for those other options ...
Alexander Frolov is a name that has crossed rumor paths with the Rangers multiple times over the past two years. But with his contract expiring, the whispers that have had him donning Ranger blue for the past two years may come true.
Like I said before, the Rangers have their superstar in Gaborik; they don’t need another one. What they do need, however, is some secondary scoring to help ease the pressure on the Rangers. Frolov may be the answer to those questions.
Now I know what you’re thinking: the 28 year-old left winger will be way too expensive for the Rangers. This very well may be true, but the Rangers do have one thing working in their favor: Frolov’s disappointing 19 goal 32 assist point total this past season. Because of his age I would have no problem offering Frolov a 5 year 25 million dollar contract. If he wants much more than that, then let him walk. But since he plays on Gaborik’s off-wing he would certainly give Gaborik some space; and he would also definitely help the Ranger have another threat on their power play.
At the end of the day, there are plenty of different options for the Rangers to choose from, but Frolov might be one of the younger and more talented ones. Obviously the monetary figures need to work out in order for this to work; but there is no doubt that the Rangers can use his talent. And yes, the Rangers would have to remove at least one of the Wade Redden and Michal Rozsival duo.
The Bruins have gotten stronger with Nathan Horton, the Flyers have gotten stronger with Dan Hamhuis and the Devils have even joined the party trading for Jason Arnott. The teams around the Rangers are getting better, especially the teams within the division. The Rangers need to have an answer to those questions, Frolov might be one of those answers.
Free agency isn't overly appealing--and with Tomas Plekanec off the market, options become more and more scarse.
So what are you thoughts guys? If it can work do you want Frolov? The floor is yours.

I’d gladly take Frolov thoguh im against giving out long term deals.
If he’d take 3 years @ 5m then yes, otherwise no thanks.

I wouldn’t give Frolov $5m. If he wants that much, enjoy the KHL sir.

I wouldn’t take him at all. The word “inconsistent” pops up far too often whenever his game is described. Watching him for 5years would be dreadful, especially at 5 million per. I mentioned in another thread that I’d rather the Rangers gamble on Tanguay for 1-2 years. At the very least, if he didn’t work out his contract wouldn’t hamstring the Rangers for years (thus avoiding and Drury/Redden-inspired rants, which I assure you Frolov would inspire right in beside them)
+1. If you want a top 6 LW for the time being (which I believe they do need), go get Tanguay on the cheap.

I had thought about Tanguay
but at least with Frolov you’re getting a goal scorer. He had 20 goals in a bad season. Tanguay is two years older and isn’t nearly the goal scorer that Frolov is. I wouldn’t touch Tanguay with a 10 foot pole.
But again, different options. I like the idea of Frolov.

Tanguay is older, yes. He’s had 5 20 goal seasons though (though obv none in the last 3 years, and he’s also seemingly declining).
Tanguay at least has an excuse, he’s had shoulder issues.
It’s certainly a matter of taste. I’d rather be wrong on the cheaper guy.

That’s assuming he clears medical. If the shoulder injury is actually behind him, he’s a steal. If it isn’t, he’s a big risk. At least he plays D though.

we were bound to disagree eventually. I think that the 28 year olf Frolov would be good for the team. The youth kinda drove the bus last year, and we needed secondary scoring. Frolov would ease that burden a little.

Plekanec had one good year with Montreal
I would probably take Frolov actually. At the end of the day I truly believe that both will be overpaid for an extended period of time (actually plekanec already was).

well depends on if you think Plekanec can keep up what he did last year, cause I certainly think 70 points and good two way play deserves 5m, 6 years is definitely too long , but a top center is worth 5m if Pleks can keep it up. And I much prefer Pleks to Frolov, but it al depends if your someone that looks more at talent or at production. Frolov has got the talent and the potential, but Pleks was a top center last year putting up 70 points

I Could See Frolov As
Zherdev part 2. I don’t think Torts would take too well to a player that has talent but consistency issues.
There are no really sure bets after Kovalchuk available in this year’s FA class. I’m in favor of keeping some cap room flexibility for an in-season trade. Or another alternative is to see which players the Hawks are selling off (Versteeg, Byfuglien, Sharp) all of whom are cheaper than 5 yrs @ $5mn.
by MyFavBaseballSquadron on Jun 23, 2010 7:22 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
I agree.I don’t see him as a Torts kind of player. I think Torts would ruin his confidence by game 20.
And you are right on with keeping some cap space for the season and see where we are in the standings come trade deadline. Then either make a trade to improve if we’re in the playoff hunt or sell if we’re bottom dwellers.

Z is definitely more talented than Frolov, and I think less of a headcase (although that’s very debatable).
And he’s younger so his inconsistency is marginally more acceptable. Besides, even when Zherdev wasn’t getting points, he was still doing pretty well offensively. With a better team he could be posting up numbers with more regularity.

if that price must be 5 mil, I’d rather go shorter then 5 years. He’s 28 years old, not old…not too young.
Can’t see how Nate Horton can make sense to some…but Frolov doesn’t. Frolov wouldn’t cost prospects either.
If this is a 2-3 year deal absolutely. This guy is better then Zherdev..I dunno why hs name is brought up.

no he’s not. First off this all a very moot point……….cuz w/o dumping one of our horrible big 3 contracts none of this is possible……and im gonna be captain obvious here but thats not gonna happen……..dont see anymore Gaineys or Sutters out there for Slats to push around.

Yeah, I’m not sure how the 5 mil came up. Frolov broke 70 points once in his career and since 2006 he has been -14. He never shoots more than 200 and broke 30 goals twice. He’s also got Doughty, Brown, Smyth, Johnson, and Kopitar to work with, so don’t say he’s got a bad team. Frolov deserves 4mil at most, maybe 4.5 on a year with absolutely no other UFAs.

If you want to offer Frolov $5 million per might as well go after Semin, who at 1 more year $6 million is a whole lot better player and secondary scorer (of course via trade not free agency, but the Rangers are deep).

in hindsight, i’d rather not give Frolov 5m either, i think 4m might get him anyway.
I’d love Semin here too but i think for what he’d cost in a trade (40 goal scorers dont come cheap) i’d rather not sacrifice given that he’d be a free agent in 12 months.

Who else can we mention here. Every time time you guys mention someone in the blog the get picked up the next day. I only wish you would have blogged about Redden a couple of years ago. Personally only guy I want is Buff Daddy. Even if he loses a bit of scoring touch, he is still 6’5" and 265 lbs. You cant lose size.
One other point or question I should say. I personally think we should draft a canadien on friday, They always seem to have a combination of skill and toughness. But the high flying russians are so attractive due to their talent. In your opinion, in what direction do you think they are going to go if NINO isn’t available. Every mock draft has someone different being picked at # 10. What do you think?
FUNNY!
how come we(Ranger fans) think it’s a problem to give a young forward with potential $5 mil per year yet our G.M. had no problem giving a “decent at best” defender OVER $6mil per year.maybe we should have a mutiny take over the team and run it as a big blueshirt banter union,i’m sure we could get us into the playoffs next year.

At 28, Frolov’s not exceptionally young (in hockey terms) nor likely to exhibit more than he already has (again, note his points have declined 4 years in a row). He’s a rip off at $5m.

His points those years are 1.83/60 and 1.62/60. For comparison, Dubinsky was 1.85 and 1.65 over those same two years.

Frolov in NY = Higgins, Kotalik, Jokinen. Good player when he wants to be, but he is not a 5 million dollar forward… nor someone that can help this team overcome it’s stretches of apathy. I’d love to see the Rangers upgrade from Prospal to Matt Lombardi. Lombardi is 28/29, a hard worker, lightning fast, and can def skate with Gabs (especially while Stephan is developing to hopefully become the #1 pivot). I think we’d be able to get Lombardi for 2.5-3mil. What does anyone think regarding Lombardi?

I think if he wins a Cup it’ll be as a secondary guy; it seems right now he wants to be THE guy but can’t; he’ll have to go in a more Hossa role (but more offense, less defense).

Can’t distinguish his NJ stats though, appears someone else wore 17 for them this year, cause it listed him with 60 games played for the devs.

N/M..i’m an idiot. I just had to run only the games once he joined the team.
53.6% Fenwick when he joined the Devs.

Means 53.6% of the shots taken (missed and SOG) while Kovy was on the ice were going in the right direction.
There’s a strong correlation between shots and goals. :-)

Smurf where do get the Fenwick numbers from? They are not on behindthenet. Or am I just overlooking them somehow?
You’re not. There’s a script that runs from timeonice.com that will run it.
This explains it:

Lately ...
Every time I read an article about someone we should pursue they re-sign/sign with other teams beside the New York Rangers. Honestly, I can really care less if we don’t sign a prolific player. I think we have a good enough core of young players to make us happy for years to come. I just don’t think we should waste our money on signing past-their-prime veterans or over spending on players that we’ll regret later for some ungodly reason. Not saying I wouldn’t mind signing Frolov … but I really want to believe that our team can develop from our young core and hope that some of them can replace the players that have those horrible contracts and lackluster skill.
I agree
where are the roster spots for the young players if we sign someone who underperformed last year? Where do all these great prospects fit in? We have a full roster as is. If we can plug 1 or 2 young guys in every year, instead of getting reammed up the cornhole like with drury, redden, rosival (and gomez, and kotalik, and higgins) The Rangers will be a strong teams for years to come.
If somebody other than Joki took that shootout, who’s to say the Rangers weren’t the team making a run? Things are not as bad as some think, even with the deadweight
youth
Matt Lombardi coming off his best yr so far a speedy play making center just hitting his prime could be a steal that you dont have to pay 5 million and Maxim (crazy legs) Afinigenov add Dominic Moore as 4th line center
Brandon Dubinsky Matt Lombardi Marian Gaborik
Maxim Afinigenov Artem Anisimov Chris Drury
Sean Avery Eric Christensen Ryan Callahan
Jody Shelley Dominc Moore Don Prust
character thats what we need and someone who can win faceoffs
Boyle is a bust
problem is youth often require long term deals on fa market, and we should be avoiding those

Only Lombardi there will command a deal long than 2 years. Afinigenov and Moore are both short term signs.

Frolov has talent, but he’s exactly the gamble the Rangers can’t afford to take right now unless Sather can get him cheap, which I doubt. Pending any surprise buyouts, the Rangers are still close to the cap, and they still don’t have a bonafide playmaking center. Anisimov showed flashes of awesomeness at times last season, but is he ready to handle that role? I’m not sure.
Basically, Sather is going to have to figure out how to get out of his own handcuffs if the Rangers are to make any significant moves. He’s done it before, somehow unloading Gomez and Kotalik. Other than that, we’ll probably have to hope for one of our prospects to have a stellar camp, make the team, and surprise people. Grachev? Kreider? Who knows.
Going after Frolov would just be a HUGE mistake. I saw this guy play lots of games in LA and he’s one of the biggest hit or miss players I have ever seen. 5 out of 7 nights a week you literally do not know if this guy is dressed in the lineup…then the other 2 hes capable of being one of the top talents in the NHL…only problem is consistency…EXACTLY WHAT WE WERE MISSING LAST YEAR!
Also, he missed quite a few games last year due to being defensively irresponsible…we don’t need another floater…we need another guy whos going to put it all on the ice every night of the week…but who can actually put the puck in the net more often then not (ie. not a drury/cally/dubi).
We don’t really have any outstanding prospects that are NHL-ready for this year…so we will 100% have to go to the free agency…lets just not make a mistake on an inconsistent kid.
I think are kids do have talent
They just never get a chance
Sauer Sags Weise Byers they should be on this team but there is never any open spots
and we constantly hear oh there just not ready BS!!
Still miss Tyutin on our blueline?
These guys can’t even light up the scoresheet in the minors and you wanna give them a top 6 spot? Sauer played alright the few games he was up last year…but I still don’t think he was fully ready…
Byers would be perfect for a 3rd or 4th line role…but who will he replace? They’ll definently have to give Weise a huge look next year…just pending on his training camp.

He's good
but we don’t have the money. R&R aren’t going anywhere.
Maybe for 2mil a year for 1 or 2 seasons but thats not happening soooo, he can go play in the KHL if all he cares about is money.
2 other options with him
Have him sign a 4 million dollars contract over 6 years with no-no trade clauses ugh, dont like that much.
Or or… give him 5.5 million for one year again no-no trade clauses.
IMO both shitty options but much better than giving him more than he deserves both ways for years or money.

one year deal he wouldnt take but its not a bad option for us

How about Mike Modano for 1 year to center Gaborik? he will be available, and should come cheap based on age...
Also a high Character guy who has won the cup..
lets face it
there is no way we are going to get any high priced free agents until we rid ourselves of the bad contracts we have trades is the only way if you want to give frolov 5 mill might as well look to trade for vinny lecalvier imagine him with gaboril and mats z ??
lohaus #54
frolov and sutton
the rangers should dump drury and redden and grab frolov and andy sutton. sutton was 2nd in blocked shots last year and frolov has mass potential opposite gaborik or on the 2nd/3rd lines!
Drury can’t be “dumped.”

Only way to be rid of Drury
is if he retires (or drives off a cliff). He has a no move clause. Unfortunately.
First off, I like Frolov but 5 years 25mil is a horrible idea. Secondly, I just don’t really watch him enough. I know he’s not worth that much but is he really as inconsistent as some say he is?
http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/players/2578/gamelog;_ylt=Ah3no5eXFpNzKvj7Inls4OhivLYF
Just check out his game log…0’s all overrrrrrrrrr! I dont think we can go for a guy like that
by littleranger on Jun 23, 2010 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions
Frolov is a 20 goal, 50 point player tops… he’s a 10% shooter with even +/-. Doesn’t shoot enough. Think of him as Dubinsky with a little more talent, a little less work ethic.
In comparison, Dubinsky put up almost identical numbers, while being a higher percentage shooter (12.1%) with less shots on goal (as he’s still getting accustomed to playing on the wing). Better +/- as well as playing against a higher quality of competition. Played 11 less games than Frolov as well.
If Dubinsky’s not getting 5M a season, there’s not a snowball’s chance in hell we give Frolov 5M. 3-3.5M would be a lot more manageable, but with the FA pool as shallow as it is, you take what you can get. I say pass on him.
There are lots of ways to discredit Frolov, this just isn’t one.
Frolov’s posted 35-36-71 at Dubinsky’s age, so no, 20/50 is not his tops.
His career shooting percentage is 14.0%, which dwarfs Dubinsky’s @ 9.1%
I defend Dubinsky as much as anyone obviously, but it’s just wrong to say Dubinsky’s the better player.

I’m not saying he’s the better player. I’m saying in the salary cap era, you need to get the most bang for your buck. 5M for someone comparable to Dubinsky most nights isn’t worth it, that’s all I’m saying.
Well that’s what I’m saying, he’s not really comparable. Their production last year was, but their careers are quite different.

Dubinsky ranked 23rd in the league among all players in QC. Only people on our team with harder QC were Gaborik (14th in the league) and Staal (15th in the league). I say just stay the course with what we got… maybe a 1-2 year stop gap or two to hold the line til our prospects are ready, but don’t sell the farm for it. Expendable people like Christensen come to mind for this.
