Sather Generally Quiet Until Draft

Photo

With NHL teams wheeling and dealing as the NHL draft approaches, General Manager Glen Sather has remained relatively quiet. The only Rangers news was that Enver Lisin would not be tendered a qualifying offer of approximately $800,000, making him an unrestricted free agent as of July 1. With the news extravaganza that was yesterday, some are wondering why Sather has been this quiet.

The truth of the matter is that Sather is generally very quiet until draft day, then gets very busy between the draft and mid-July. In fact, I cannot recall many, if any, moves that were made by Sather in the post-lockout era that came before the draft. The Scott Gomez deal is the only significant move made by Sather pre-July 1, and that came on June 30.

Don’t worry, Sather is still breathing, he was in on the Arnott sweepstakes for a while, and we can only assume that he was in on Horton until he heard the asking price. However, with limited cap space and key RFA’s to sign, you can expect Sather to be quiet on most fronts. Marc Staal seems to be the priority, and his contract will dictate the rest of the Rangers offseason plans.

Honestly I wouldn’t mind it if Sather does nothing as far as trades/free agency this year. No need to stretch our salary cap to the max every season.

Only thing i hope they do is to trade up and get Nino. From what i’ve read he’s the real deal.

Anyone hear how much Staal is asking for?

I wish...

that we had a clue on anything on the discussions with our rfa’s

I was trying to figure that out myself.

I thought the concensus was to go with the youth movement

If that is the case, they need not take any action except resign the key RFA’s and UFA’s. Lisin leaving opens up the spot for MZA. The Joker’s $5 mil (which was Kotalik and Higgins salaries) will be needed to give raises to Prospal, Staal, and Girardi. Prust, Christensen and Shelly may get small raises, and a backup goalie is needed as well. Even if they demote Redden, they will need to keep the cap room in case injuries or even poorer play from younglings (not likely to play worse than redden) force a recall. After the guys are resigned, there isn’t a roster spot for more than a few of the young guys, maybe Weiss or Byers, and whoever earns Redden’s spot.

After next season, we will have to resign Dubi, Callahan, Anisimov and Gilroy(if he improves this year) All likely to demand raises again, except maybe Gilroy. Boyle is up too, but he is likely to be let go unless something miraculous happens this year in his play.

Unless Drury, Redden and Rosival can be convinced to inflict career ending injuries upon themselves, The only action should be youth development in the system.

I am happy with that course of action.

I hate to burst your bubble but sather is going to try to sign a couple of UFA’s that are winners. can’t bring back the same team form last year neither.

...was in on the Arnott sweepstakes???

Holy Jesus, if that’s a portent of things to come… well that ought to just scare the shit out of even the most calloused of Ranger fans. Why doesn’t he make a play for Rod Brind’amour or Mike Modano while he’s throwing his hat into the Arnott sweepstakes??

by AZRangerFan on Jun 23, 2010 7:41 PM EDT reply actions

Don’t give him any ideas. I think it’s telling in that he’s going to look for a center for Gaborik, he apparently has bought into the theory everyone else has, that somehow adding a linemate for Gaborik is going to solve the problem of having a 2nd and 3rd line that can score goals consistently.

If the Rangers sign Modano, I’m blaming YOU!

Rangers get an extra 2.6 mil in cap space!

Maybe they can afford to sign 1 UFA with the extra money, thanks to a salary cap increase to 59.4 mil

Damn! In my quick haste I thought I read Sather and Quit in the same sentence, my heart stopped.

Quick haste?

I didn’t know haste could be slow. =)

HAHA

Wow, it’s not a problem at all. I hope it just illustrates the thoughtlessness I put into the whole reading process. Fresh off of a red bull after work at the time.

the extra cap space, along with joker leaving will allow us to resign stall girardi prospal christensen shelley and prust..

we should also bring up a few young kids this year, maybe byers and mza.. try to bring up a few each year and we sohuld be ok

LET'S GO RANGERS!!!

RFA/UFAs

Why does everyone keep saying we need to resign all of these guys…stall girardi prospal christensen shelley and prust… we STUNK with them, why would be better with them again???

I think other than staal and maybe give prust, another shot they all should be replaced.
