Well, believe it or not we are just a day away from the start of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. With that, I decided to do a mock draft with my selections for the first 15 picks, including our New York Rangers. Joe will have a complete mock up sometime before the draft so be sure to look for that as well.

3. Florida Panthers: Erik Gudbranson, D
4. Columbus Blue Jackets: Cam Fowler, D
5. NY Islanders: Brandon Gormley, D
6. Tampa Bay Lightning: Nino Niederreiter, RW
7. Carolina Hurricanes: Brett Connolly, LW
8. Atlanta Thrashers: Jeff Skinner, C
9. Minnesota Wild: Vladimir Tarasenko, RW
10. NY Rangers: Ryan Johansen, C
11. Dallas Stars: Derek Forbort, D

i see Campbell going 6th to Tampa Bay, they are in some serious need of Goalie help and this kid is supposed to be a future all star goalie
i think they could get Pickard in the 2nd and with Nino Yzerman gets a stud to go w Stamkos long term.

i would take forbort if nino, connolly and johansen were gone because Forbort is a legit all around D maybe like a Tyler Myers so I wouldnt sneeze at it just cause he is a D.

Just as long as we don’t get Tarasenko. I will gladly take Johansen if Nino is gone.

which part, wanting Johansen or not wanting Tarasenko?
by Michael Gleich on Jun 24, 2010 2:02 PM EDT up reply actions
Tarasenko’s gonna be a boom or bust player in the NHL. Taking him is risky. Johansen will be solid, but I don’t see him putting up anywhere near the numbers he does in the OHL (I think playing on a line with Nino makes him look better than he actually is.). If the board looks like that come our 10th pick, I pray we take Etem because he’s a guaranteed goal-scorer.

they played in WHL not the OHL and why is the assumption that Nino made Johansen better and not the other way? In the time Nino was at the U20 tourney Portland played 6 games and in those Johansen had 5G and 6A without Nino carrying him. Is it possible they are both just really good?

All I’m saying is Etem put up 4 less points than Johansen but had 12 more goals, and none of his line-mates are predicted to go top 10 in the draft.
by PowerForward on Jun 24, 2010 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions
and if that was all that mattered Seguin would be a much higher pick than Hall since Hall played with 5 first rounders on his team.
by Michael Gleich on Jun 24, 2010 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions
It’s not all that matters, but when players’ stats lines are so close it’s good to look at mitigating factors.
by PowerForward on Jun 24, 2010 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions
and im saying Hall and Seguin put up the same exact points with clear differences in surrounding talent.
by Michael Gleich on Jun 24, 2010 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions
other “mitigating” factors might include the fact Johansen is 6’ 3" vs the 6’ 0" Etem. Im not arguing Johansen would be a better goal scorer than Etem or saying Etem wont be a good player, just think Johansen is a better overall player and to discount that possibility because he played with Nino who in all honesty dropped off in the 2nd half of the year (probably worn out), but had a good playoffs isnt fair to the player.

I like both guys. We differ on who we thing is better, and I don’t think that’s gonna change. Johansen playing on a line with Nino isn’t the only reason I like Etem more. I like him because he’s the better skater, he had a better Combine showing, and I think he’s more committed to improving his game long-term.

All matters of opinion…except for the first two…

Why not Granlund?
He reminds me of a Backstrom, and I watched the feature video on Tarasenko. Is it me or does it just show a lot of video of him going end to end without scoring. If we wanted that we could have kept Gomer.
Worst Case Scenario
Seguin, Hall, Gudbranson, Fowler, Gormley, Nino, Connolly, and Johansen all taken in the first 9 picks. I always felt this was a draft that you wanted to be in the Top 8 or so, and it may be true. Rangers need some surprises to pop into the Top 10 so one or two of these guys fall to them. Otherwise, I agree that we should trade down.
Damn the Rangers for winning so many games down the stretch… it might cost us an impact player.

If it happens like that, you move back and grab Etem at 13-17 and get another pick in the 2nd or 3rd round. I like Forbort, but I think the Rangers need a forward in the 1st round, they can load up on D later.

Darren Dreger DarrenDreger 15th overall is in play. Florida is willing to move the pick. Oilers among those interested.
Maybe we should look into adding another 1st. 10 and 15 could be great. Johansen, Forbort at 10 with Etem, MciLrath, Tarasenko, even Granlund at 15.
What’s the cost?

didnt say. i would suspect at least next year’s 1.
by Michael Gleich on Jun 24, 2010 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions
i say if taresenko is available definetly do it if the price is right, like say sangs and hagelin, or sangs and a pick this year, grabbing nino and taresenko somehow would be a dream draft

If the cost is only next year’s 1st, definitely. I’d rather give like next years 2 and Sanguinetti or something, not sure that’s enough though.

In last years draft
The top 4 picks all played a full NHL season, after that, 3 others of the top 10 played 1 game each. Kulikov at 14 actually played a full year, for Florida, who some could argue is a minor league team. For the entire first round, 5 guys played for their respective NHL teams.
The NHL draft is rarely about immediate impact players, with the exception of the very top few picks. Sather has deferred to the Scouts and lets Clark draft what he feels is best. It has seemed to work over the past 3 years. I am confident in whoever they draft, and that person can fight for a roster spot in 2-3 years.
They have seemed to steal a few players in recent years at low picks, like Grachev for example in the 3rd round.
why trade up? cost is too high when the payoff is too uncertain. Kreider was a 19 last year. People are high on him. Long term success is not about who you took in round 1, its about who you took in the whole draft. And as a body of work, the Rangers have been very successful as of late. Stay the course.
ryan o’reilly played the whole year for col as a 2nd rounder as well.
