I think this is gonna be a quiet night for us. Cigar’s lack of big moves almost makes me think we’re gonna end up on the outside looking in of the playoffs again.

Depends on “quiet.” I agree that we’re not going to see any major deals, but we might see some repositioning here and there.
Souray’s name is also hitting rumor mills fast and furious again, which could frighten me.

yeah ive seen that around too. this guy has been linked to us since january and we cant seem to shake him. ill still take him for redden straight up though lol
by BronxBeliever on Jun 25, 2010 8:46 AM EDT up reply actions
They won’t though. They have a glut of forwards they’re going to try to tag with him. Souray-Nilsson-O’Sullivan for Redden-Sanguinetti would work.

havent seen either of them play all that much so i cant really pass judgment on them… would that deal be worth for us?
by BronxBeliever on Jun 25, 2010 8:51 AM EDT up reply actions
just checked out capgeek, that would be adding some seriuos salary for us next year but their both RFA’s after that. might be worth giving em a tryout
by BronxBeliever on Jun 25, 2010 8:54 AM EDT up reply actions
It’s the only way they’ll take the extra two years of Redden. Give to get and all that.
It costs us ~$3m short term, yes. But it also then times Rozsival, Souray, Drury and Avery to all come off the books at the same time, which would give us close to $19m in cap space.

in my eyes thats completely worth it. im not sure what kind of ceiling nilsson and osullivan have but they are both still relatively young and it wouldnt be complete waste giving them a tryout next season. souray can help this team if he stays healthy (i know thats asking a lot of him) and the same cant be said of redden. add in the fact that sourays contract is up in two yrs and that equals a deal for me
by BronxBeliever on Jun 25, 2010 9:08 AM EDT up reply actions
To be honest, they’re both frustrating 25 yr olds without a lot of upside. O’Sullivan at least had a 53 pt season three years ago, but he never approached that level again.
It’s really just a cap dump for edmonton and a redden dump for us. Maybe we get lucky and one of the two fits in well, but really it’s not a short term move at all.

if nothing else either one of them would be easier to move individually for picks or low level prospects than redden ever would be. i think if this deal was on the table for sather he should take it… we’re not really losing anything except a prospect that torts doesnt really like.

im sold on johansen at ten or moving down to get etem but that might be something of a gamble. its going to a tricky gauging exactly where hes going to go as the more i read about him the more it seems GM’s and scouts around the league love him
by BronxBeliever on Jun 25, 2010 8:47 AM EDT up reply actions
what if they just take Etem at #10?
I’ve seen that they should trade down to get him, but in real life that’s really not so easy….
Would Etem be “worth” the #10 like Krieder was worth his pick last year?
I dunno about you allz…but given the recent history of Rangers drafts…I’m good with wheover they draft, no matter if the interweb scouts don’t like it, or its someone off all of our “radars”.
..cuz the interweb, and us, don’t to 2% of the scouting that the real guys do.
…that said, Nino would be nice.
KEEP LEE!!!
by FreeBradshaw on Jun 25, 2010 8:57 AM EDT up reply actions
i havent seen him play in person but from what i have read etem has some serious potential. scouts are raving about his skating ability, and hes not to shabby a finisher. the only downsides i have heard about are his size and ability to be physical on the next level. the rangers pay strength trainers for a reason so i would say it wouldnt be a waste at 10… it just may take some time for him to develop
by BronxBeliever on Jun 25, 2010 9:03 AM EDT up reply actions
Etem is a good prospect no doubt
but Johanses would be a nice grab, and maybe Gralund, a guy that we really havent been talking too much about. There will be names on at the 10 spot that are valuable for a team, the question is how do we get them

Granlund is a very smart player and a playmaker but he is on the smallish side and there are skating concerns. he played very well in the Finnish league but for some reason struggled in the tournaments.

Form Wikepedia on J. Dolan
Early life
After originally pursuing a career in music, Dolan eventually switched to a major in communications at SUNY New Paltz and began working for Cablevision in various capacities including sales before eventually being dispatched to Cleveland by his father to manage the launching of a sports radio station. In 1995 he was made CEO of Cablevision.
Drug/alcohol abuse
Throughout his early adult life Dolan battled drug and alcohol problems and was reportedly known for having a volatile temper. In 1993 he was sent to drug rehabilitation at the Hazelden clinic in Center City, Minnesota.1
Recreational
Dolan performs blues-inspired rock as the singer for JD and the Straight Shot and is also an avid sailor.
by It may HAVE to Last a Lifetime on Jun 25, 2010 10:26 AM EDT up reply actions
Dolan’s not making the draft picks, only paying them. Since Clark took over:
2007: Cherepanov (1st), Hagelin (6th)
2008: Del Zotto (1st), Stepan (2nd), Grachev (3rd), Kundratek (3rd), Weise (4th)
2009: Kreider (1st), Werek (2nd), Bourque (3rd), Horak (5th)
And that doesn’t include the 2006 draft that got us Sanguinetti and Anisimov
Now, 2-3 years isn’t enough time to evaluate and obviously 2007 isn’t great, but considering that’s a list of a lot of our top prospects, I’d say there’s not much to worry about, at least not yet.

DarrenDreger Potential picks in play: 4, 8, 15… Florida says lots of interest in 15th overall, but no deal yet.
I sort of brought up the 15 yesterday and I would be very interested in getting a 2nd number 1 pick this year especially with the perceived weakness of next year’s draft right now. also moving up from 10 to 8 should ensure that Johansen was available or maybe even Nino. Moving all the way up to 4 would probably cost a significant amount that is probably too much. I really wish we had that 3rd rounder right now cause it could have been a very valuable trade chip.
by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2010 10:58 AM EDT reply actions
I think Nino AND Johansen are both going before 10. Apparently, Yzerman was lauding Johansen’s game yesterday, and if the Lightning don’t take Nino the Canes will. Moving up to 6 would most likely get us one of them.
As for Florida’s 15th, they’ve stated they’re looking for scoring. The rumor is the Oilers may shop Penner, in which case we can’t compete (I’m assuming we want to keep Gaborik.).
by PowerForward on Jun 25, 2010 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions
Canes will pass on Nino if either Fowler or Gormley fall. Atlanta has an outside chance of taking Campbell.

I think Atl probably wants Campbell and because they have basically dealt away all their picks they would love to move back and get more picks which is why Dreger has their pick as “available”

i havent said it much in here because Nino has become a cult hero, but in terms of playing I think Johansen is the better player, but Nino does have the excitement factor. For TB though with Stamkos already there Nino should be the pick imo, but not surprising to see Johansen being lauded by Yzerman.

It may HAVE to Last a Lifetime needs to make a doomsday clock. Definitely all valid reasons to be scared. However, Gordie Clark has his sh** together and I believe that he’ll will make the best choice he can make. As he said before, the talent level for top 3 forwards drops off after Hall and Seguin, but their are plenty of interchangeable depth players following the top 2 forwards. How about Rozie + Sangs as part of a deal for Brad Richards (who has one yr remaining on his contract).
what would the rest of that deal be? not a very enticing start for dallas to say the least
by BronxBeliever on Jun 25, 2010 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions
didnt we have a large richards discussion this week? he had 91 points and they love him there. if they ever traded him it would be for a heck of a lot and to dump salary not to take Rozi back.
by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2010 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions
to be fair rozi only has 7 mil over two yrs so he could still be involved in a salary dump situation for dallas thats less than 1 yr of richards at 7.8). i proposed a package of Rosi, AA and sangs with a high pick in next yrs draft. they still save money on that deal while getting some young talent.
that said i agree, leetch, they wont deal him now. if anything they will wait to see how they start the season next yr and then take things from there
by BronxBeliever on Jun 25, 2010 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions
oh he is a great asset to have at the deadline next season.
by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2010 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions
Well Rozie has 2 yrs left on his contract, so it wouldn’t be too bad for dallas. It will give them some veteran presence on the blueline to go along with Robidas and a young d-man in Sangs. I think they can afford Rozi b/c they’d still come out saving 3.8 mil by dealing Richards b/c Rozi’s cap hit is 4 mil this season and 3 mil the next. If Richards plays well, we can have a chance to re-sign him for a more reasonable price or just thank him and shed some salary.
by motherpucker on Jun 25, 2010 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions
You’re neglecting the minor detail that Richards just finished 7th in the league in scoring. Rozsival and Sangs do not represent anything in the vicinity of value to replace that.
They can be part of a deal, but you better be including some combination of Dubinsky, the #10, Grachev, McDonagh, Anisimov, Staal, Callahan. Probably 2-3 of those at minimum.
Dallas is in a (self imposed) cap crunch yes, but they’re not desperate.

The Bruins have stated that Savard is in play and that several Eastern teams are interested. His season of injuries should lessen his value, but every time he came back he was in top form. Any scenario in which we target him? I think he’d be an addition we could actually utilize.
if we are going to target a forward by trade right now with a big contract, rather look at Spezza.
by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2010 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions
Savard’s contract is alot friendlier for cap hit and a full $3m less, but Spezza is worth the look.

The more i look at how the draft projects to unfold we should look to move back a couple spots and take Etem. I dont see Nino, Connolly or Johansen being there. PHX 13, 22, 52 for 10, 40 would be great. maybe don would take sangs instead of the 2nd. lol.
by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2010 12:08 PM EDT reply actions
Savard setting the table for Gabby? Why didn;t we just keep him when we had him. How many head injuries has he had?
TSN’s Dreger is reporting that a bunch of teams are looking to trade picks. This makes sense since everybody keeps saying that picks 5 thru 50 are similar talent-wise. I hope Glen doesn’t do anything stupid.
We’ll make the most of this draft by trading down for more later-round picks. If we draft at 10, I think we’ll most likely wind up taking Skinner (I have Connolly, Nino, and Johansen going 6, 7, & 9.). Either way, we’re not bad off.
I disagree that the drop-off is at 5. It’s at 8 or 9, unfortunately for us… If we trade up to 6, we’ll nab a potential star, but that’s when things get dicey with Sather.

Well, the thing is the Oilers have a shit ton of forwards and only so many spots, so they’re almost assuredly trying to tack people on, names that aren’t worth much, Nilsson, O’Sullivan, Cogliano, Moreau….

Just a question...
Is there any players in the draft that could be an immediate impact with the Rangers? I mean i know there are a lot of guys who down the road could be impact players, but immediately… Obviously besides Hall and Seguin… and if there are what is the likely hood we nab them… also dregger tweeted that the isles 5 pick may be available could we have some way to trade up to nab nino?
let me take the larger view. Hall, Seguin, Fowler and Gubrandson probably make clubs this fall while Connolly, Nino and maybe Gormley depending on where would have a shot. Johansen is probably a year away.
It depends on what you mean by impact because if you look at players straight from the draft the past two years most of them played ok but not huge impacts other than Duchene last year. doughty, stamkos had huge 2nd years and myers obviously as a rookie but 2nd year from draft.
by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2010 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions
i was just concerned with obviously making the team out of camp… having an impact was to general a question… haha… thanks though I haven’t been able to follow all the prospect stuff as closely as i usually do because of law school…
well we have some of our own from prior drafts that have a shot to make our club out of camp. McDonagh (obviously not drafted by us) if he signs is ready to be here; Jess at Prospect Park thinks Werek might be with the effort he is putting in this summer. Grachev would be interesting, but i think another year in Hartford especially with Stepan would be good for him.
by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2010 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions
Tarasenko can probably step right in, I think.
Thing with the Rangers organization though is it’s very unlikely that whoever it is, including Nino, would probably not step right in unless they were overwhelming in camp. Maybe things will change after MDZ was given a shot at 19, I just don’t see anybody we end up with instantly making the lineup.

i think the opposite in some ways because while MDZ had the great start that made them keep him, the struggles during the year might them more concerned about keeping someone that young all year.

Not to mention Gilroy who came in straight off the FA market and eventually was sent down.
I hope I’m wrong and whoever it is sets the world on fire, but it’s not the worst thing if that person is a year away, he can join Grachev and Stepan.

This seemed like a big thing with MDZ. Although I can’t remember any Ranger brass saying it, it didn’t seem like they wanted him playing another year in Juniors. I bet he would have been in Hartford, if eligible.
oh they definitely would have sent him down to hartford if they could have.

oh ok, i thought u meant to play together this year in hartford and be ready for the nhl in a year.
by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2010 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions
personally i wish they would decide to really give the rebuild the go and let the kids play instead of searching for the FA’s and while they will struggle at times, they will learn and we will see the point and have hope for the future. i think of it like what colorado did last year.
by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2010 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions
I hope thats not the case because generally, and i’m speaking generally, when players enter the league they either are mediocre, or they get off to hot starts and then fall appart… either way something bad is happening in there first season… it’s just a learning curve… I think if somebody is on the cusp… given our cap situation it would make more sense to let the young guy play, hit that learning curve, and grow from thereafter… obviously there are other factors that go into this stuff like players confidence and such… also playing time, but i think the rangers are in the position to allow some young guys to get the playing time they need to learn and grow…
oh im not advocating throwing them in if they arent ready, but if it a borderline thing, let a young kid get his feet instead of an old stop gap and im talking about guys who could be in hartford vs here. the ones where juniors is the option in most cases it is better to send them back instead of having them suffer all year.
by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2010 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions
my biggest concern with this club right now actually is the coaching in Hartford because look at every prospect there last year and none of them took any step forward, so i worry about development, while our kids in college or juniors all improved.
Hartford’s becoming a place where talent goes to die. We need to make that jump to Rochester and mix things up.
by PowerForward on Jun 25, 2010 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions
could it be the coaching… or possibly the actual quallity of our prospects in hartford… i mean all we get are projections of what they should be… however you never know… brendl point in case… lol
disagree because they changed that staff last year. before that we were having players improve and many of those same guys stunted last year (Sangs, Sauer being huge examples)
by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2010 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions
in talking with Jess from Prospect Park he said it was part of why McDonagh and Stepan were initially so hesitant to leave school and turn pro. McDonagh still isnt for sure.

stepan signed a 2way contract correct? if thats the case maybe mcdonagh is holding out for a 1 way in hope of avoiding the setbacks of hartford… i mean if he holds out it could be another year at college where i personally think he’s maxed out his potential… I think the biggest question the rangers have to ask themselves is it hartford, or the Rangers… if he doesn’t want to play in NY we may be in for some issues, and may end up having to move him… which if thats the case could happen today…
Bigger issue is that if the deal doesn’t get done with McDonagh now, they run the risk of losing his rights next year.

he has told Jess personally he wants to be in NY, he just wants to try and win a title at Wisconsin and they made him Captain so that is the issue as to whether he would come out this year.
by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2010 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions
ahhh… that complicates things a bit… i think at the end of the day… he has to make a decision for his future… I mean personally i wouldn’t hesitate to take the next step rather than staying behind… if you knwo what i mean…
i think it has been made a lot more likely for a few reasons.
Wisconsin lost a ton of talent between seniors and underclassmen leaving early and the fact that Stepan is apparently coming so either he is in NY or he is with Derek at Hartford in all likelihood.

Might be fine anyway because while we all love to speculate…if nothing actually happens with Rozsival or Redden, there won’t be many/any D spots available.
Though I think McDonagh would step right in and kick Gilroy to the curb if need be.

agreed i think that if a decent deal comes along for gilroy he could be gone. not playing him down the stretch last yr really showed what torts thought of him, even if was only a rookie. i still think he has potential but it doesnt seem like he has much backing in the organization right now
by BronxBeliever on Jun 25, 2010 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions
Most likely scenario if that’s true:
a) Gilroy spends a year in HFD, not re-signed
b) Gilroy traded during this draft
c) Gilroy moved to win
d) something else

i would move gilroy especially if i could get a 3 for him.

the two way vs one way has nothing to do with where he can play. the difference is in his salary as in a two way they get X if they are in the NHL and less if in the minors. All EL deals are two way by the way.
by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2010 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions
is ther a limit to bonuses on EL deals? i know there is a salary max and a three yr time period but what can the bonuses get to?
by BronxBeliever on Jun 25, 2010 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions
well the base salary max i believe is 900K while the rest of it is bonuses.
i believe the max after bonuses is around 3.8 mil.

what kind of bonus is stepan expected to get and what would McD command? if i remember seeing correctly sather gave MZA something like a 900K signing bonus which seemed pretty steep to me for an unproven player in north america
by BronxBeliever on Jun 25, 2010 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions
usually those are based on where they were chosen so Stepan will probably get a basic deal similar to AA, while McDonagh who was the 12 pick probably gets a slightly larger one more in line with MDZ
by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2010 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions
wouldnt how long it took them to get to the NHL affect that though? i mean McD was drafted befor MDZ and he’s still not guarenteed to make the team this yr, so wouldnt he have little to no leverage on the front office?
by BronxBeliever on Jun 25, 2010 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions
as i said all EL’s are two way so if he doesnt make the team it doesnt matter what the contract number is he gets much less.
by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2010 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions
i thought they still get the signing bonus no matter where they play though
by BronxBeliever on Jun 25, 2010 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions
was MDZ expected to make the team when he signed his?
by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2010 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions
whats your point? McD is older and its obviously taken him a lot longer to become nhl ready. my questions was simply: does that fact affect the amount he will get as a signing bonus
by BronxBeliever on Jun 25, 2010 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions
you said he had no leverage since he might not make the team. and just because he stayed in college doesnt mean it took him longer to be nhl ready. you could also argue that just because MDZ was in the NHL doesnt mean he was nhl ready. all things come into play im sure.
by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2010 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions
not to mention his leverage is as people have speculated if he doesnt sign this summer he could wait them out next summer and the rangers lose his rights and he becomes a fa

interesting… into play yet again is the translation to NA style of play… obviously not for the U18 guys but the Swedes/Finns… but do you think since this draft is so deep that they might move that pick to get a few other picks for this draft? Problem is that we have to establish where we might fall next year… like are we going to be bottom of the barrel or are we going to be stanley cup winners… obviously history tells us we will fall in the middle somewhere…
I already said I’d trade next year picks for this years. Just clarifying that a “weak class” doesn’t mean there will be no talent. whatsoever.

there is all kinds of rumors coming out of broadstreet bullies… talks with hamhuis… trading for tim thomas… perhaps jonathon bernier of the kings… Canucks gunning for hamhuis, flyers may be open to trading hamhuis rights to canucks… crazy stuff going on in flyer world…

yea… I would assume since quick signed that extension last year he would be slated to be the #1 in LA… i saw hartnell to LA as well since stevens is there and hartnell thrived under stevens… also i’ve heard carter’s name being mention to possibly pull in bernier or quick… who knows whats going on in philly if hamhuis doesn’t sign… there has also been rumors about tim thomas being traded to philly… lol it’s getting nuts

I think that would be a mistake… whether it’s true or not who knows rumors are rumors… but why trade a young promising, and cheaper goalie to get tim thomas an aging goalie with a bloated contract… baffles my mind… is sather running la now too? lol… i mean i’m sure the hope is that bernier pans out to be the number one when thomas is gone, and quick will be a way to get the most return… however if bernier doesn’t pan out… now you’re back to square one… and with goaltending… i think thats something that shouldn’t be toyed with… just my opinion… i wasn’t aware they would even think of trading him good find leetch

For all those ready to give up on Sanguinetti and trade him
he had 10 more points than Grachev last year in Hfd in 19 fewer games, (Grachev was 12 16-28 in 80 games) and a better + He also improved his point production and goal scoring
Games G A PTS
2009-10 Regular Season Hartford Wolf Pack 61 9 29 38
2008-09 Regular Season Hartford Wolf Pack 78 6 36 42
why are you comparing a 19 yr old with his first year in professional hockey and took a year less to get to the professional ranks to a now 22 yr old who was there for 2 years? also with sanguinetti the problem isnt points it is that the hole’s he had in his game are still there 3 years later or he would already be here. Finally how does 42 pts in 78 games count as increased production to 4 less points in 17 less games the year before?
by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2010 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions
his points per game increased. .623 vs .538
thats increased production. who’s roster spot was he going to fill anyway? And…he has only played 2 years in hartford, the 2 prior were after juniors, which they can do.
Derek Jeter spent 4 years in the minor leagues. Starting in Gulf coast league, which is below A ball. Maybe the Yankees should have given up after 2 years?
just because Jeter made it doesnt mean that Sangs will.
Me personally wouldnt mind trading Sangs for a good player in the draft.
My Sather review: Even a broken clock shows the right time twice a day
Not implying Sangs is Jeter, just illustrating it takes some guys a little longer to blossum.
and what is the rush? until redden and rosival are gone, there is no spot in the rotation.
Keep in mind Gilroy went straight from College to Pro, thats 45 game season to 82. Its no wonder his played suffered late in the year and was benched. Same argument in support of Grachev can be used in support of Gilroy. He was voted the BEST player in college hockey.
Gilroy, also, hasn’t been a defenseman for that long. It started to show. He really should have been in Hartford all year with either Sauer, Potter, or the Finn rotating in his spot.
I am not pumping Gilroy
but, out of training camp last year, i think everyone could agree he was deserving of a roster spot. He even started the season well.
who’s roster spot was he going to fill anyway?
Why not Gilroy’s? Anyway, it’s not that we want to give up on him, but it seems like the organization has. So he’s a popular name because he actually has value, so might be able to help fetch some of the players fans would like to see added.
