The time has come boys and girls. I am on the media riser, for now. Here is your open thread for the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. We'll be updating as much as possible.

The NHL, in its ever infinite wisdom, credentialed 13 SBNation writers, and gave us 6 seats on the riser. I am currently using someone else’s seat, next to Bruce Garrioch believe it or not. I may get kicked out if the people that own this seat show up. The NHL has really done a bad job this year.

The media was not allowed in the building until 2 PM
The seat issue
The internet is not working correctly.

I wish I was back in Montreal

but the lede on the sbnation nhl page says you’re enjoying free food and soft drinks. What you want a seat and working internet!?!? Outrageous!!

Um, the Banter representative has seen no free food

kausatoday Steve Y would want Brandon Gormley for Tampa at No. 6, but I don’t believe he will be there. I see 3 D men going 3rd, 4th or 5th.

I disagree i think Gormley could be available at 6.

NHLSourcesSay Oilers/Jackets talking…most likely about the 4th overall pick.

I think 4 is where it gets interesting in terms of trades shaking things up.

6 more years is a lot for his age and the concussions have to concern.

by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2010 7:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Presuming McD is coming out, there’s more than enough defense no matter how you stack it.
Rangers need forwards, and Etem plus a 3rd rounder (we don’t have one otherwise) makes the most sense

Just saw this

8:32 P.M.-NEW YORK RANGERS

Which of the highly talented defensemen will fall out of the top 10? Cam Fowler or Brandon Gormley? Or both?

General Manager Glen Sather picks defenseman DYLAN MCILRATH.

Out of all the prospects, McIlrath is probably my favorite. He is not ony a talented offensive player, but he is also physical and definitely not afraid to fight. Any team would be very fortunate to have him. He has had 19 fighting majors.

A team that has had a mediocre last couple of seasons, including failing to make the playoffs since the hiring of John Tortorella, will be grateful to get a player who can replace Sean Avery and Donald Brashear in agitating opponents. They also got another solid defenseman to go alongside Michael Del Zotto.

About Our Pick

Dylan McIlrath was selected by the New York Rangers with the 10th overall pick in the 2010 NHL entry draft.
This pick comes as quite a shock, especially seeing as the Rangers’ passed up two highly regarded defenseman in Cam Fowler and Erik Gudbranson. McIlrath is undoubtedly the toughest player in this year’s NHL Entry draft and was referred to by one scout as, “The Undertaker.” McIlrath was already regarded as a solid defensive defenseman before he broke out after being given a chance to develop his offensive skills with Moose Jaw in the final months of the season. McIlrath finished the year with 24 points in 65 games. He showed an improvement in both his foot speed and puck skills, which had another scout calling him one of the most intriguing defensemen prospects available this year. He’s not expected to play in the NHL next season and he may never have much fantasy value, but the Rangers could be getting a great blueliner in McIlrath

Supposedly Shea Weber is McIlrath’s ‘favorite player’ (so says his NHL.com profile) but Shea Weber has a cannon of a shot. Juding by McIlrath’s goal totals I don’t see that from him, but we should be fair and give the kid a chance to develop. He is built like a tree, so that is nice to see. Hopefully he will USE HIS SIZE.

Sure, but the Rangers aren't interested. Why would they care about that pick..

Not like they need help up front or anything. They got their man. Pack it up and go out to dinner.

September through December: 8 points in 36 games
January through March: 16 points in 29 games

yeah they said they opened him up more in the last couple months, he could end up being a steal but as of right now it seems a bad pick, but id rather have a bad pick surprise then a good pick surprise and be a bust

really, what are the odds that any of the Rangers picks will end up ever playing for the team anyway? They will get traded for another old mistake and be swell for some other team..
