Quick thoughts on the McIlrath pick
I have a whole video interview with him speaking to the media, but we may not have that uploaded until the morning.
We will also have some thoughts from Gordie Clark in the morning. I can tell you this, the Rangers felt that once the top forwards were gone, the Rangers shifted gears and filled a need. This is the type of player the Rangers have not had in years. Can we at least let the guy take the ice as a Ranger before we all go nuts?
Alright, carry on, more later.
I've taken some great pics of many of the draft picks. If you want to see them, you can click this link:
I'll put together a whole gallery of the pictures I've taken tomorrow when things slow down a little.
Q. Dylan, what is your first thought?
DYLAN McILRATH: Excitement. I’m just thrilled to be picked Top 10 to a great organization like the Rangers. It’s a thrill right now, and I’m just lost in emotions, I guess.
Q. Tell us about what you do for Moose Jaw?
DYLAN McILRATH: My whole on the team, I’m a big, physical "D" man. Try to be hard to play against, and strike fear in the opposition. Also my game is improving. I think I can be a two-way guy, or develop into a two-way guy in the near future.
Q. Did the Rangers talk to you in the combine, or talk about your relationship so far with the Rangers?
DYLAN McILRATH: I had a great meeting with them in the combine, so it was in my head that they were interested. But right before I went to test, one of the guys took me aside and really thought that I was a great player, and I was a great fit for them. It was kind of a nice gesture for him to do that, went out of his way to do that; and it turns out that I go to the Rangers, and I couldn’t be happier.
Q. You had three meetings yesterday. The Rangers weren’t one of those teams. You thought maybe you were going to go to one of those clubs. Were you a bit surprised that it was 10th, and it was New York?
DYLAN McILRATH: Yeah, to be honest, a little surprised. But in the back of my mind, I knew they were a team that was interested. But, other with the other four teams I was thinking it was one of them.
But you can never read too far into things like that. Teams have different ways of doing things. So, yeah, I guess so.
Q. Have you had to be invited to Canada’s World Juniors Camp, now you’re going number 10 overall. Is there a message in there at all?
DYLAN McILRATH: I don’t know. My goal is to make the team, and I hope to get a tryout in the winter and get a great start to next season and hope to prove them wrong.
Q. Have you been to New York before?
DYLAN McILRATH: I have not been to New York, so it will be exciting.
Q. Who were the other teams?
DYLAN McILRATH: Dallas, Anaheim, Vancouver, and Florida. So all of those teams.
Q. As a player, who do you pattern yourself after?
DYLAN McILRATH: I try to mold my game around Shea Weber type. I know in junior he was more my style of play. We had similar points and similar stats. So he was more of a shut down guy and then he developed offensively later. That’s what I’m trying to do here.

I've been
saying it for months.
The Rangers needed a punishing defender.
I think Forbort is a bit more of a playmaker, but this is an excellent pick.
Any forward at 10 would have been a reach too.
I agree, in 4 years when stall and mdz are amazing we will have this guy coming up, hopefully gilroy or girardi improve, if not we trade for an awesome d man somehow and if another two come up they fill in 5 and 6. We are going to have an awesome d corps in a couple years

More I read of it I like it
the guy’s huge and nasty. I know..Jessiman, but he was supposed to be a power forward that scores goals. This guy isn’t supposed to do that (be nice to have some boomers from the point tho…).
I mean, face it. Would Brumistov or Grumland (possibly the 2 likely forwards for them) be a better pick? Would those midgets be better?
The Rangers don’t need another offensive D-Man. Fowler seemed like a gift tho..so I guess that’s why this pick “hurts”..really nothing to do with Dylan at all
I hope he’s another hit for Clark. Cuz if he does hit on this pick, its a position and style of player the Rangers could drastically need.
KEEP LEE!!!
Yeah…it hurts because Fowler was a top 3 pick in some circles, a Norris-type guy who could go to 50-60 points.
Also alot (incl. myself) lost it because the draft focused on his size and the 19 fights. Now that more stuff is being written, it looks like he might develop offensively the same way Staal has. If he’s a 30 pt guy that hits like a brick shithouse, this pick looks alot better.
Still doesn’t answer our secondary scoring, and still doesn’t answer why we still have Potter and Sauer’s rights, but that’s another story.

I keep seeing scouting reports raising questions about his skating though. I really don’t care about size. At 6’4, 200+, he’s gonna throw around kids in junior hockey. In the NHL, it’s all about skating. If you can’t skate, you won’t hit. We talk about Pronger, but Pronger is a tremendous skater.
to be a bit fair...
dude’s 6"5 at 17-18 years old. He’s gonna be a bit of a goofy bastard on skates.

He's a goofy bastard too
but he also proved it’s possible to improve your skating.

I still think they should have went with Fowler, however I understand this kid fills a hole and am willing to give him a chance.

Fowler falling to 13th was very surprising, I would have taken him if he was still there, but obviously theres something wrong for him to fall that far

Now I could really see them taking a risk on Kabanov in the second round albeit his maturity issues.

Galiev might be an option if he’s available too, but id take a risk on kabanov. I would have really liked tarasenko though, he really would have been zherdev without the lobotomy.
I like Galiev, might be a better option at 40 if hes there

Doesn't compete hard enough...
That’s the knock on Fowler… Haven’t we had enough prospects like that in the past? Clearly 6 or 7 other GM’s felt it was a problem also. I’d much rather have a guy with size and grit than a non-competetive offensive D-man.
think of the past dmen in Sauer, Potter, Sangs, and Ilka, they all were projected to be eventual first or second pair defenseman…yeah right. Why I believe not getting Fowler was dumb, because your suppose to keep trying at this point, it couldnt hurt, he COULD have been the next Rafalski or at least MDZ. I dunno maybe im getting carried away but knowing what your getting isnt so great. Good luck to this kid though hopefully him and Staal could be the defensive stalwarts we need for the next 10 years. Would have been nice to give Fowler a shot.

I can't believe the 180
One article everyone is killing him, the next article is filled with excitement.
For the record, I was, and will continue to be satisfied with this pick… Until he Jessiman’s us.
Now where’s the trades???
Information is key.
At least personally…I killed it because McIlrath was never considered a top 10, and we had a “gift” fall in our lap in Fowler. So I really didn’t know alot about this kid, and the first thing they mention is “19 fights” on the broadcast, which to me is completely useless as a stat. Prust had 19+ fights…he’s not a top 10 talent.
Now that rationality has set in, it makes sense that we passed on Fowler. I’m still not 100% sold that Dylan was the value needed at 10, but given the group that went 11-16, with a goalie, 3-dmen, a complete reach and Schwartz…only Tarasenko at 16 may have been the best we could do.
They really need to go 100% offense with the rest of this draft though.
