2010 NHL Entry Draft: Day Two Open Thread, Dylan McIlrath Interview
Good Morning Everyone. Day 2 of the Draft is upon us, and rumor is the Rangers are looking goaltender in the second round. We'll see soon, Rangers select 40th.Use this as your open thread.
Glad to see some people rallying the Mcilrath pick, it will be ok.
Meanwhile, here is the video from Mcilrath's press conference. It's mostly Jess from Prospect Park, Greg from Puck Daddy, and yours truly. He seems like another intelligent, well spoken kid, like Chris Kreider and Ethan Werek from last year.
Also, his message to the New York Ranger fans....."You won't be disappointed"

Wow, guess I drank a lot more last night than I thought
..for a brief moment, could swear I just read “…the Rangers are looking goaltender in the second round.”
They do need someone to start grooming for the future. Hank won’t be around forever, especially the way they are overusing him.

Not in the 2nd. They already have CJ who is certainly at NHL backup level, and is still young.
Hank’s got a solid 6-7 years left at minimum. No goalies needed right now.

Actually quite a few of the people in the know seem to think they do need a goaltender, because what’s in the system is weak, and after the second round the quality of goaltenders drops off dramatically.
Just telling you what I am hearing

yeah we had CJ
take Kabanov at 40. We got the mean defenseman that we needed now take the offense

I know Hank won't be around forever...
And I don’t mean to “shoot the messenger,” but we have CJ, and they just drafted Scott Stajcer last year. Plus they got Lundqvist in what, the 7th round?? I don’t know, if Galiev, Weal, Rensfeldt or some other promising offensive player is there at 40, seems odd that they would go for a goalie so soon. Maybe they love Calvin Pickard, what the hell do I know…
Didn’t I just get ripped the other day for saying the same thing?
He’ll be around as long as the Rangers are willing to pay him. Which should be for the next 10 years at least. And given where he was drafted, where Halak, Hasek, and others were drafted, pick a goalie with future low picks and one of them will pan out.

First I was PISSED,
but after some thought and reading up on the kid I really knew nothing about I am more excited. He’s seems pretty level headed and prepared to do what it takes to get to the next level. I would much rather have a big, physical, shut down d-man then someone like Mike Green (we all saw how that panned out in their playoff run). If Clark drafted this kid than there must be something he knows or sees that other people don’t. He’s a scout for a reason! I am certain that the Rangers made a good decision and there is plenty of offense to be had in the second and third rounds.
Good afternoon everyone. Great Video Jim!

Everyone should be happy with Christian
41 goals as a 17-year-old in the OHL is not to be taken lightly. He’s small to be sure, but he’s a pure goal-scorer and smallish forwards have already proven they can be very effective in the post-lockout NHL. I’m really happy with this pick and our draft so far, we filled two real needs in our organization. I understand the calls for Krill but this kid is a much surer thing than Kabanov right now.
(with that said, if we go back and trade for a pick to get Kabanov, I wouldn’t complain.)

OT a little bit: according to Pierre LeBrun, Sharks just resigned Niclas Wallin for 1 year at 2.5 million. The fuck is Doug Wilson smoking? That’s like a mini-Redden contract….he’s worth 800,000k, max.

they just have this weird penchant for trading for veteran defensemen, plugging them into the 5/6 hole, and then paying them way too much money for third pairing. see also: huskins, kent
no idea how they expect to afford a goalie now.

Gives them 6 d-men, 8 forwards, and Greiss, and about 9.5m to play with. If they let Setoguchi go, and just fill with 3/4 liners @ 1m, they’d have about 4-5m to play with.
Ellis, Mason will be cheaper than that.

and same value as dan hamhuis fucking negotiating rights after everybody knows he wants to test FA market

Not great, at least he’s a big kid. Probably good value for a 4th.

born in florida, true
but he’s played four years in the OHL already. the Florida thing shouldn’t worry anyone too much

Andrew Yogan, from thescoutingreport.com
Like Martindale, Yogan is another player with first round skills that will likely slip a bit in the draft. He’s a great skater for his size and has good offensive tools, although his finish is questionable. The main factor that will dog his draft stock is his lack of hockey sense and inability to effectively use his teammates.
"Jaromir Jagr.... it's a POWER PLAY GOAL!"
- Sam Rosen
"Marian Gaborik.... it's a POWER PLAY GOAL!"
-Sam Rosen
I like the pick
For a 4th rounder especially, very nice pick. We filled those same two organizational needs I was talking about when discussing the kid from Minnesota: size up front and center. He’ll have plenty of time to develop better hockey sense, but you can’t teach size.
exactly
it’s okay to draft for size in the fourth round, IMO, moreso than a first round pick. Plus unlike Jessiman, this kid’s got four years of OHL experience already. Jessiman was a completely untested American HS kid
by John Carroll on Jun 26, 2010 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions
From Hockey's Future:
Yogan has a big frame and skates well, but lacks the skill to be a top-six forward at the NHL level. A better passer than a shooter, but he chooses to shoot a lot. Work ethic is an issue, as is hockey sense.
In 63 games for the Erie Otters, Yogan scored 25 goals and added 30 assists for 55 points while picking up 97 penalty minutes. Yogan played for Team Cherry at the 2010 CHL Top Prospects Game, where he made it onto the score sheet from a fight with Team Orr’s Matt MacKenzie.

I just like his name… but his dad was a helluva player.
Him being born in Florida made for funny questions, of course I had to ask, LOL

if true, not a disaster
2nd round picks are at a premium and who knows if the Canes will be a playoff team next year. Not a bad return for a kid who was never gonna get a chance here by all accounts.
also it’s a much better return than LA got from us for Boyle
by John Carroll on Jun 26, 2010 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions
They just need to swap Boyle and Gilroy positionally.

yea but i think we somehow all knew that the second MDZ got drafted, sanguinetti was on the way back burner.
Not sure it means much, but Clark didn’t draft Sangs.

by George E. Ays on Jun 26, 2010 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions
well, that and also....
…if you’ll recall, MDZ was ranked higher than he ended up going. I think they took him also because he kind of fell in their laps
by John Carroll on Jun 26, 2010 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions
also agreed, but if you look it up, sang’s ohl stats blow mdz’s out of the water, look where it got him
there's always gonna be busts
for where he was taken in ‘05, Sangs was not a bad pick. Too bad it didn’t work out, nice we recouped some value for him and we’re still very strong at defense.

on the upside
at least we’re not the Devils. 3 picks so far, highest at 38th, thanks mostly to the Kovalchuk trade (how’d that work out?), and they traded away another pick next year for Arnott already. They’re gonna be in deep, deep trouble later in the decade.
they find gems late, they will be fine, fabulously run organization.
Dolan really needs to triple whatever NJ pays Lou and bring him to MSG

They did just get Merrill, who could be a player.
Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay
by George E. Ays on Jun 26, 2010 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions
good luck with that
for all their “gems”, they haven’t gotten out of the first round in three years. Even we’ve done that. I said it when they lost to the Flyers and I’ll say it again: I’d rather be a fan of a team like the Rangers than the post-lockout Devils, who tease you with these awesome regular seasons then flame out in the first round year after year.
post-lockout, they have not been that great of an organization. People give them too much credit. Parise was a great pick, but they seem more interested in constantly bringing in retreads like Arnott then keeping their own young players. And the Kovalchuk move was a huge blunder.

by Ahmad Bradshaw on Jun 26, 2010 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions
they're still draft-eligable till 21 I believe
no one took him until this year. Probably his OHL scoring numbers going up a bit this season, along with the PIMs staying constant, convinced the Rangers to give it a shot with a 5th round pick
by John Carroll on Jun 26, 2010 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions
Clark influence, but also NHL in general
there’s less and less Europeans being taken lately, I think they had a record-low in the first round this year. But Clark definitely seems to prefer North Americans, it’s probably a good route to try and take considering the Euro route sure wasn’t working out for us.
by John Carroll on Jun 26, 2010 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions
Thomas has some skill. 4th round on is boom or bust anyway, at least they’re taking some forwards with size, if they’re good, they’ll be that much better.

it’s Washington’s second-rounder, apparently, not Carolina’s. So yeah, that will be a late pick. oh well
59th or 60th overall.
I think its what Carolina got for Joe Corvo

yeah
he’s just guessing saying it’ll be 59th or 60th, that’s assuming they make it to the Cup Finals next year. obviously it could be the 31st pick for all anyone knows right now, just not bloody likely

look, bobby did it to himself, he could’ve done well for himself last year but he came to camp completely out of shape, couldn’t finish torts’ training regimen (he actualy collapsed midway through, remember) and he didn’t grow defensively. it’s sad that the former 1st rounder goes down like this for us, but he bummed himself down the drain.
