Random Thoughts: Putting Numbers to Names and Tim Connolly
Summer for me started the first weekend in May when I finished my junior year of college, but it really felt like summer got kicked off this weekend. Graduation parties, USA Soccer excitement, and attempting to finish a keg all day Sunday so we could return it Monday. I know, my life sounds really tough. Anyway, I stuck around the house long enough to see the Rangers draft a kid I didn't even know was a prospect until they took him. I vented my thoughts on anyone who would listen all weekend. Let's get the bullets going.
- Putting numbers to the names selected by the Rangers over the weekend.
So I made this fancy-dancy chart of all the Ranger draft picks and their NHL equivalencies. Follow after the jump and look in awe:
Obviously, we must remember the disclaimer that a lot can happen after draft day. The next two seasons of development for anyone not named Taylor Hall or Tyler Seguin will be more important than the last two. My second "obvious" point is that our first-round draft pick will not be expected to contribute offensively whatsoever. I don't necessarily disagree with the people who are saying that the Rangers picked McIlrath out of a need for a crease-clearing d-man. I disagree with the Rangers logic that our need for such a d-man outweighs the need for more scoring. There wasn't a player at number 10 who would be NHL ready for next season, but there was better offensively minded players available. Oh, and Cam Fowler/Brandon Gormley; they were there too. If McIlrath doesn't become a regular staple on the Rangers blueline within five years this pick will be compared to Jessiman because of who was available.
Going back to the chart though; I am going to keep an eye on Jesper Fasth next season as he will most likely enter the Swedish Elite League with his club HV71. They were the Swedish Champions last season, so if young Jesper can pop into the lineup I'll be curious to see how he performs. I also like how the Rangers stayed away from Europeans for once. I have nothing against them, I just thought it was a good move. Hopefully all the young men can score more points next season so their equivalencies can rise.
Oh, and if anyone is confused about the "Ceiling" part, that's just something I calculate on my own. I take the players best season in junior hockey or wherever he played and just multiply that season. It's accurate for the most part as to a players career year in the NHL.
- Puck Prospectus: Rangers should trade for Tim Connolly
And I agree. When I'm talking about the Rangers with casual fans, I usually explain how the Rangers have good goaltending, above average defenseman, and a young offense with one sniper. Ever since Chris Drury morphed into a third-line center, and with Gomez gone, the need for a first line center has been dire. Connolly, as it goes, might be shipped out of Buffalo because GM Darcy Regier didn't like the way him and Derek Roy played in the playoffs. Send him our way, kind sir, as Connolly will most likely have a solid year next season. He is due to be 30, where a lot of forwards get some magic bump in their stats for some reason. The only concern would be the usual injury bug that seems to plague him. The Rangers have taken that risk with Gaborik, so why not with his potential line-mate? Plus, a 4.5 million dollar cap hit for a first line center who is likely good for anywhere from 50 to 90 points in my book is actually kind of a deal.
- Steve Bernier to Florida and Thursday, July 1.
A little tip to anyone that is into fantasy hockey; Steve Bernier. I have had him a couple of seasons now in my keeper league, and this move really excites me. First of all, he goes to Florida where he will most likely play a second line role and could finally release some of that over a point-per-game potential he had in the QMJHL. The southeast division is the weakest in hockey, and players actually do receive a bump in their scoring statistics for playing down South. Bernier will also be going into his statistical career year at the age of 26. Pick him up ASAP if you can get him for cheap!
Finally, Thursday won't feel the same as usual unless Sather ignores Tortorella's (and everyone else's) words and breaks the bank for a UFA. So as much as it won't be as exciting as the past couple of summers, just know it's probably the right move to play it cool on the free agent market this season.
So let's hear it in the comments.

I’ve been touting Connolly for a long time. I am pretty sure he only has 1 year left on his deal too so its low risk high reward. If he does well you look to keep him if he doesnt – no biggie – Stepan/Anisimov/Grachev etc should all be closer to being impact players.
Not to mention, there’s no better options this summer than Connolly.

But if you go Roy you are investing in a long term contract on another player who may be better served as a 2nd line center. We’ve done that experiment enough. Atleast Connolly is a limited risk. 1 year deal gives whoever takes him flexibility.

Roy has 3 yrs at 4 million not bad for a guy who would be your number one. Roy has much better point production (last year being the exception). Connolly hasnt played a full year in like 6 years, again this year almost a full year. Roy has gotten consistently better on faceoffs and is statistically much better. If they were going to make a trade for a number one center, I like Bergeron. As a stop gap for 2 yrs Sako Koivu he is a free agent you give up nothing.
I doubt Bergeron is available, the only reason I even speculate about it is he has one year to UFA, Savard has a contract that will make next to impossible to move, they have Krejci and Seguin. Plus their number 1 prospect Colbourne is a center. Boston has cap issues, maybe Cally and Girardi for Bergeron.
but bergeron has had those dreaded concussion problems, and supposedly has not been the same since

He's a franchise player in Boston...
I spent a year and a half living and Boston and had to watch the Bruins, but I have to say I respect Bergeron a lot. He had an incredible rookie season, the same year as Crosby. Since the concussion he hasn’t had the same offensive upside, but he still works his butt off. In my opinion, he’s the Callahan of the Bs, minus the physicality Cally brings to us.
I would love to see him play here if he’s available. Somehow I doubt Boston would let him go without sizable compensation.
You have to be careful though because I wouldn’t rank Bergie as a #1 center. He’s more of a second liner, because he plays without a lot of heart and gets himself points because he works, but he doesn’t have the flair and scoring touch he came into the league with anymore. Boston’s groomed him into a different kind of player.
He could work, he’s a brilliant passer when he’s on his game. I could see him potentially pairing well with Gaborik, but the real question is whether we could EVER get him from the Bs.

Bad things come from Buffalo
Based on out past experiences, I think we should stay away from any former Sabres
It’s fine as long you don’t pay them $7m.

Depends on what the cost is for Connelly
injury prone, but potentially like you say…playing with Gabby he could put up a lot of points as a legit C (and by default a 1st line C, since the Rangers have no one better).
They’d be playing a bit of roulette with him and Gabby on the same team/line..but if the cost isn’t too high (….Sanguinetti would’ve been fine trade bait, dammit) I’d be for it. Sather’s been pretty good with trades, so I’m for it if he figures out something.
KEEP LEE!!!
I like Connolly too..but as always…what are you giving up? The always popular “Shitty Player Special” of Voros/Boyle/Rozsival isn’t going to cut it.

LOL
maybe Sather sees the 2nd round pick from Carolina as better trade bait than a player (Sangs) who’s stock contiued to drop?
blueseatblogs.com
For a team looking for defense though, Sangs would’ve been a better fit than a pick, I think. Maybe Sauer and a 3rd? Even that seems like too little, but I don’t know how available Connolly really is.

actually i feel like he got that 2nd round pick
in order to be able to make some type of play on an RFA, and still have some significant picks available later on. I might be crazy, but I could be close

but, dave, hes gotta be careful there, cause hes relying on nobody poaching staal, so to do it to someone else, they might come right back to staal……

The pick was Washington’s, not Carolina’s.

i know
but it was from carolina – my wording was off!
Joe – good point and you never know but i feel if there was a RFA he’d target it’d have been Pavelski or a player like that.
Smurf – From the dissatisfaction you hear from Buffalo/the media i think he’s available. And with injury history, a sizeable cap hit and an expiring contract how much can they realistically demand???

Stay Away From Sabres!!!
I mentioned it before, but I thought I would elaborate – we can’t take on any Sabres. For those of you who don’t realize the city of Buffalo is an absolute toilet. The core of it’s existance is empty buildings, unemployment, and high voltage power lines cutting through the dreary sky. Nothing good happens there. The people there know it, and have come to accept it. No Buffalo team has ever one a championship. Bills fans don’t think they lost 4 straight Super Bowls, they brag that they WON 4 straight AFC championships! There the only NFL team that has to SELL a home game to another city just to keep the lights on. It is bad out there.
Because of this, I think most players overachieve a bit while they are there, hoping to get out. When they finally get out, there is a definate letdown. The players are SO happy to free, nothing else matters. It’s not just the players we sign, it’s Buffalo players all over the league. The only time you didn’t really see a drop off, was when Kotalik went to Edmonton, because Edmonton is the only place in the league that’s almost as horrible as Buffalo these days, so he still hadn’t really escaped.
I also like how the Rangers stayed away from Europeans for once. I have nothing against them, I just thought it was a good move.
Gordie Clark said that they were trying to draft more Canadien players. Get more players who play that style in the organization.

Quote from Gordie:
“I sat down with Glen, and Jim Schoenfeld, and Mark Messier, and we talked about the philosophy of the draft, and I wanted to have a real distinctive push towards the Canadien junior player, and we think that the WHL is one of the toughest leagues in the Canadien Junior League.”

Savard’s contract is not terrible if you break it down. Over the last 3 years, money due is 2 million making it very buyout friendly, so when thinking about savard look at it like a 4 year contract.
I wouldn’t mind connely with 1 year left. But if we traded for him then the only forward we would have signed after this year are gabby, drury, and avery with all are hopefully core players ( aa, cal, dub, ect) working out deals at the same times which gives the players more leaverage imo
KIDS
I have heard over the last couple days that sather says teams kept calling about our kids. Has anyone heard any concrete trades or excatly what players they wanted or is this more like the i had a deal from stamkos stuff???
