Rangers Waive trio ahead of Buyouts?
As per several twitter posts Aaron Voros, Donald Brashear and Patrick Rissmiller have all been waived by the Rangers. By all accounts this is prior to being bought out but surely in the case of Voros, the best thing to do is to demote him? That way he doesnt hurt the cap figure whatsoever so this seems odd to me.
Noteable other buy out candidates/waiver victims include Nilsson and Ethan Moreau of the Oilers.

awesome!
No buyouts here… send them all to the AHL
question, are we on the hook for brashear’s contract regardless of if he is in the AHL… i know there is some age rule when it comes to waivers….
yes
he counts against the cap regardless of where he plays (nhl/ahl).

Saves 100k demoting him.
You can’t send all 3 to the AHL, as there is an experience limit among the rostered players, and some of the kids down there already meet it.

I don't understand the incentive to cut these players now
they are all cheap. 1 million for voros/rissenmiller, and 1.4 for brashear. their contracts all run out after this season, but if the rangers cut them they then count against the cap (at a reduced price) for an extra year. just swallow the contracts one more year. the extra 1 million or so that it will cost the rangers in cap space is to valuable. they always come right near the cap ceiling, they need that room.

I’m pretty sure that waiving an NHL player is just part of the process to send the player to the minors and relieve the team of the players’ cap hits. In other words, expect to see these three on the Wolfpack roster (or whoever the top minor league affiliate will be next season).
I doubt the Rangers are buying these three or any other players out. Buyouts were created to give teams in not so great financial situations a way to get out from a large contract. In short, the team administering the buyout gets a break on the money owed to the bought out player but gets stuck with a longer cap hit as a penalty. Since the Rangers are one of the most successful (sadly, only financially) franchises in the NHL there is no reason to penalize themselves with a buyout. They will just waive a player they are unhappy with and banish him to the AHL.
i understand that
but there are two things, one, it was in response to his article which implied they may go on to buy them out. and second, they did put them on unconditional waivers, which they didn’t have to do, but you have to put them on unconditional waivers if you want to buy them out. so that does keep the option in play, and if that is their intention it baffles me.

same, i would certainly expect brash to get bought out if not loaned to the KHL (which would certainly be preferable, unless with over 35 contracts we are stuck with the cap hit anyway), as buyout does not change cap hit from demotion, saves rangers money, and no need to waste space in hartford for brash, but the other two should certainly not be bought out….rissmiller should be demoted, and voros used as 13th forward in my opinion.

this is what scares me!!!!!
why would sather waive them now when you cant put them in hartford till after training camp. i hope im wrong but this looks more and more like sather has a terrible idea up his sleeve.
most people worry about iran gettin nukes…….i worry about sather gettin cap space
You are completely right. This is sounding pretty damn fishy now that you’ve pointed it out. He’s either going for a major trade or a huge signing.

Brashear
If the man doesn’t want to stay in NY but still collects a paycheck…make him work the concession stands, clean the ice, be an equipment manager..Don’t let him play even for Hartford. He never should have come here at all. Yet another one of Sather’s brilliant moves.
Seriously. We let Orr walk so that we can bring in Brashear? At least Orr can win fights.
