Would the Rangers sign #9?

Per TSN.com today, Mike Modano will not be offerred a contract by the Dallas Stars for the upcoming season.  This makes him free to sign with any NHL team, provided he decides to extend his career another year.

Now I am WELL aware of the Rangers track record for sigining stars past their prime; as if the elite NHLers cant retire without a Stint on Broadway. (Lindros, Gretzky, Messier pt 2, etc etc etc...).

They have been met with mixed results, but often result in too much money being paid for not enough production.  Its kind of like buying a Ferrari with 100K miles on it...its still a high class car, but you'll never get it to go full throttle.

That being said; would you want to see Mikey Modano in a Rangers jersey? I see it as a Vinny Prospal type signing, one year deal for a reasonable rate, more as a role model than a points producer.

Given Drury's quiet leadership style, I think another class act in the locker room would help this team. (If he'd be willing to share another locker room with Avery, that is...)

I think that all things considered, I'd love to see it.

Yes. He was one of the best and could do no wrong in NY

I was just about

To write something exactly like this.
Although he is one of my all time favorite players, we are not a team that is a leadership piece away from a playoff run. He would only take away a third line spot from one of our prospects. We all must face that, baring a miracle season from cally, dubi, Gab, and a soild season from Drury, there is no playoff run. Hank can only get us but so far. We need some open spaces for our prospects to fill up, not a washed up “leader”.

he’s another 3rd-4th line guy at this stage of his career…let the kids play

I’m hoping Modano retires because of it. He doesn’t belong in another sweater, including ours.

Plus of course, he violates my FA rule this year, which is nobody older than I am @ 32.

Mo’s said that he’ll only sign with a team if he has some kind of familiarity with them. He’s listed other Pacific division teams as possibilities. Plus, I think he wants to play for a Cup contender. No offense, but the Rangers don’t scream contender.

Here's to all us girls who love hockey...and the men who play it.

I love Modano, but I hope he retires as a Star and never wears another jersey.

by Michael Gleich on Jun 29, 2010 2:17 PM EDT reply actions

I agree...that doesnt happen often enough.

I wish the Stars gave him the option to stay on. But i’m sure we can relate to wanting to make the move to younger talent…

you could argue they have the last couple of years and he helped by cutting salary.

I agree… let’s hope he doesnt pull a naslund.

What about taking a chance on O'Sullivan

Edmonton just waived him. If they buy him out of NYR works out an agreement to claim him on re-entry waivers (I am assuming his is on a 1 way deal, I’m not certain) either way they could probably get him for a vinny prospal like 1.45 million 1 yr deal. Especially if Vinny wants too much and signs elsewhere.
I am well aware of O’Sullivans defensive liabilities, but this contract wouldn’t hurt the at all. If he doesn’t work out trade him for little or nothing or let him finish the year in hartford. I think his speed and abilities with the puck could be a nice fit for a O’sullivan-dubi-gabby line. it would take some pressure off of gabby, so he doesn’t have to be the puck carrier all the time, and instead can try to drift away into open space as he does so well. O’sullivans speed and dubi’s strength (if he plays a more north-south game) could really open some holes in coverage for gabby to get lost in.

dont know much about the guy, how old is he? whats the best season he has had in the NHL? when was it?

by Ahmad Bradshaw on Jun 29, 2010 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions

He is a young kid only 25

Three years ago, at 23, he had a 50 point season. Since then he’s declined steadily.

When he was 24 he put up 43 points, and when he was 25 (this season) he put up 34 points.

He is a risk I really would like Sather to take, but realize that he is another center, so something would have to budge with Prospal or Christensen.

Still a good value though for the 1-2 million he would command.

He’s mostly a winger with the ability to play center.

Speaking with Derek over at C&B, he tells me that O’Sullivan had some serious luck issues this year, with normal contributions from the shooting percentages (for and against) he’d have been a -8 instead of a -35. Since that’s both offensive and defensive, it’s not unreasonable to think he can go back to the 40-50 pt player he was.

Going back to the other argument…I’d rather spend 4m on 1 year deals for him and Tanguay then alone on Frolov.

Two Thumbs up...

I like it. We can have some defensive liabilities, assuming we sign Staal. O’Sullivan is a solid player that would help produce. I like him, but having him and Zherdev is a little too much.

I have the same reaction as I did for the Maddon questions

Is he a good player? Yes. Would I love to have him on the team as a 3rd line center? Absolutely. Do we already have a player that does that role very nicely (Drury)? Yep. Sorry.

i respect the player wish we had many years ago but signing him now we go back to our old ways with signing past thier prime vets let it go move forward

by nytrueblue on Jun 29, 2010 2:52 PM EDT reply actions

cmon

name me one player the rangers have signed past their prime :-P

by ItsGravyBaby on Jun 29, 2010 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Nope.

I’d rather sign Prospal &/or let the kids play.

Not too nice to Avery...

COME ON…DO WE REALLY WANT THE STARS SLOPPY SECONDS?

He didn’t stick up for Avery, I wonder how their relationship is.

mike/ o sullivan

if modano plays next year wouldn’t he want to play for a contender. we are kinda half rebuilding half trying to make the playoffs mabey pit or wash

also im for the o sullivan thing but not at a 3 mil cap hit only if he gets bought out or on re entry waivers

by sathers cigar on Jun 30, 2010 11:39 AM EDT reply actions

Modano shouldn’t be an option. The Rangers are getting younger, and players are going to be stepping in to a full-time role. Signing anyone just stalls the process.
