We interrupt this Sunday Open Thread to talk about Brooksie's article in the NY Post
You have probably already seen Larry Brooks article in the Post today, where he talks about Glen Sather having a "Blueshirt Blueprint" for the future. I love how it only took 8 or 9 years of "living in the now" to realize there has to be a plan for the future.
Annnnnnnnnnnnyway.........
A few highlights from the story:
Sather on if the Rangers could have been where the Flyers are:
"We just weren’t quite good enough over the course of the season. But if we had won that final game, would we have been tough enough to compete in the playoffs the way the Flyers have? Could we be where they are now?
"I think so."
"We have to get better," Sather acknowledged. "And the way we’re going to get better is by staying within our organization and giving our prospects the time to grow and the opportunity to play in New York.
Glen also talked about resigning Marc Staal and Dan Girardi ("Those two guys are part of our core; of course we’re signing them,"), Jody Shelley, and more.
So the Blueprint is in place, you know the old saying "Rome wasn't built in a day?", well maybe we can change it to "The Rangers weren't built in ten years"
I'll bump the open thread back up a little later on.

I dont buy the final 2 quotes at all about “earning” a spot on the team and not just because of their contract. Brooks mentions the dropping Redden to the AHL which means 2 things: A) He didnt ask Sather about that which is absolute horseshit reporting or either B) Brooks asked & Sather didnt answer which likely means there is no shot in hell of there being a $6.5 million D-Man in the AHL.
Favre 4 Ever
I Believe In Chris Drury
I wonder
what Brashear said? It’s been a while, but I have hope for the future. If he can get Nino at the draft I’ll believe what he says.
I picture it like this
:Ring:
Brashear-Hello
Sather-Hey Donald, I’ve got some bad news for you…
Brashear-What’s that?
Sather-We have no room for you, So your pretty much buried in Hartford, you’re off the Rangers
Brashear-Wait, What?
Sather-Yes, We’ve found a better version of you and he’s tougher and has 2 women 1st names
Brashear-NOBODY IS BETTER THAN ME, DON’T YOU KNOW WHO I AM? I’LL KICK YOUR ASS!!!!
Sather-Why couldn’t you do that on the ice?
:Click:
Actions, not words.
Sather said a lot of good things, but I’ll reserve judgment until after July 1st.

Draft done

Then we can look back at this article and see
a) how straight and above-board ol’ Glenn was
or
b) how full of sh!t he was.

maybe
He learned his lesson. All this core talk, and young players getting a chance has me believing he reads posts on this site.
You know if he does send Redden down and use his up and comers then bravo. If he does only one of two of those things then cudos still but he is like a good politician. He talks a good game until the term starts then he comes through on nothing he promises

That article was rediculous! He spent more time talking about Brashear and Shelley rather than asking about Redden. The most important thing going into training camp is what to do with Redden and Brooks doesn’t even ask about what his situation is! WTF!

You can’t expect Glen to actually say whats really going on, come on now… Shit needs to be kept quiet for a reason. He can elude to things and make suggestions but as a GM you never
a) want to give away your game plan
b) disrespect players (NHL fines n shit)
c) gm’s dont express whats gonna happen for reasons
Glen Sather deserves 1 more chance. Let him make some choices this year. IF he manages to squeek Redden out of NY would you not praise him?
Didnt Glen get rid of Gomez and bring in a steller offensive point producer in Gabby?
Glen can be a douche, we all know this. But sometimes he does work magic… IF Sather gets redden out of NY I say almost all is forgiven, that would be huge
by Ryan Nicholas Howe on Jun 6, 2010 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions
He most definetly does not deserve another chance, hes had plenty. But hes gonna get one, so we might as well hope he makes good on it
by Ahmad Bradshaw on Jun 6, 2010 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions
His own mess
But if he gets rid of Redden, he’s cleaning up his own mess (as he did with the Gomez deal). So he’s back to square one but he’s wasted a lot of time and some of Hank’s best years. Can’t really say all is forgiven there.
What i meant by my previous post was why didn’t Brooks ask Sather about Redden and his contract? I fully expect Sather to blurt out some BS about how well Redden played this past season and he will re-evaluate him and everybody else on the team this summer and everyone will be held accountable. The typical politically correct BS. But Brooks as a journalist HAS to ask and in my opinion pin Sather down about the situation. Get some answers!

i wanted to see some more talk about the contract situations with Girardi, Staal and Prust
anyone got any info on that???
I mean Sather said he was going to re-sign them, so lets hope hes right. About Prust I don’t know but I assume if he’s resigning Shelley he’s going to do the same with Prust.
by CrazyRangerFan on Jun 6, 2010 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions
he said he was going to resign them...
but it didn’t indicate how the negotiations were going…he can still resign them during arbitration, which we all hope it doesn’t come to…especially with Staal
Yeah I understand what your saying but I doubt we will find out unless we see a long hold out by them such as Dubinsky or Zherdev. I highly doubt that will happen because I think everyone knows how much these players are worth.
by CrazyRangerFan on Jun 6, 2010 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions
As a matter of course, the Rangers never, ever comment on negotiations. And for the most part, the players and their agents respect that and bite their tongues as well.
Last year’s situation with Zherdev is a perfect example – it wasn’t until after the arbitration hearing happened that the real truth came out publicly.
Anyone who says they’ve got “inside info” – I’d call BS
holding back
I’d be very surprised if Brooks released the entire interview in one go.
For pure site hits and paper sales he’ll possibly drip feed the interview in chunks.
I’d like to think therefore that there is more to come
…. but, some posters have made valid points; he’s not going to show his hand this early or fully. You wouldnt expect it from a poker player and you’re certainly not going to get it from an NHL GM.

Getting Better?
Guys help me out how are we going to get better if we are putting the same team on the ice? Bringing back Shelley and Prospal, and Prust ok I’m fine with that. However who’s scoring Goals tell me that MZA is going to be the answer. If so he’s doing it again putting a question mark guy in a no win situation. If MZA scores 15 goals in his first season I would be happy if he scores 20+ I would probably wet myself. My point its great he wants to keep the core together and he shouldn’t go out and sign crap to 3 year 9 million dollar deals but we should be looking to get better not just stay status quo. What I got from the article was " I (Sather) want to improve the team but i screwded up the cap so much that I have to hope and pray that someone from Hartford can save my ass this season"!!
The Future of the New York Rangers
Call me crazy, but I feel that in order to be successful, the NYR need to do a few things…
If you want to rebuild, you need a few things
1) 2 Bonafide Natural Goal Scourer’s
2) 2 1st Line Centers
3) 2 Shut Down Defenseman
4) PPQB on the point
5) All Star Goalie
6) 2 Natural Team Leaders who people will listen too
7) A Cup Winning Respectable Coach
8) A GM with a brain
9) 6-8 20-25 Goal Scoring “Fillers” that play with pride and heart
10) 2 Playmakers
11) 1-2 Goons
12) Players with Pride / Determination & A Belief in the Organization
Go throughout the checklist… See what the Rangers have, and what the Rangers are missing..
My personal opinion is to be sellers… Get rid of almost EVERYONE, Lose the next 2 years as the worst team in the league and get the #1 draft picks… Get rid of the salary and have 20-30 Million to spend on whoever the fuck you want 2-3 years from now. Get a new coach, new gm, and new EVERYTHING.
The only way to “rebuild” is to actually wipe the slate clean..!

would not want to go through that

That would be very unfair
To players like Hank, Gabby, Staal, Cally, AA and Dubi. I agree we aren’t going anywhere the next 2 years. but If we were to do what you said these guys would would be seriously pissed at the organization and come contract i would expect them to bolt at the first opportunity.

I say burn the sucker down to the ground
I always get hated when I say this….
We will not be competitive in the next 3 yrs while we have ANY of the Drury/ Rozy/ Redden salaries weiging us down, so why not? If he can figure out how to unload ALL of them without trading away all of our youth, I will be the first in line to kiss his holy arse. It’s not going to happen.
Lundy and Gabby’s best years are going to be wasted on mediocre teams and first round exits if we are lucky. In 3 yrs, when we can finally put the right pieces in place, we are going to find that Lundy is no longer the goalie he was when he was 27, and that gabby had one to many injuries and has lost more than a step. So get what we can for them now before they grow “old” here and have no value.
Keep the kids on the farm, and maybe a couple of guys from Staal, MDZ, Duby, Cally, Ansimov. Load up on prospects and youth. It gives us leverage when we need to make THE RIGHT deals down the road.
Tha sad truth is this team is screwed by Sather so anyone who gets excited by anything he says in this article or believes that he is a changed man, should just bend over now and take whats coming to you. Look, I love this team just like the next guy. But its totally jacked up because of its out of whack salary structure.
I agree 100%…. You should keep Staal, MDZ, Cally, Duby, AA, Grachev – This will be the rangers immediate core..
Trade Gaborik and here’s why… Get a #1 Draft pick #1 overall sometime in the future for him and package redden in the deal. Get rid of Rozzy for a considerable draft pick in the future, Let Drurys contract expire…
keep hank, and the rangers main core…. Rebuild, Rebuild, Rebuild.. INTENTIONALLY come in last place for the next 2 years and get the #1 overall draft pick the next 2 years in a row (and possibly the 3rd with the gabby trade..)
If you had 3 #1 overall players, Let the core get better, Free up cap space, you could COMPLETELY rebuild the team at the RIGHT TIME
by Ryan Nicholas Howe on Jun 6, 2010 6:55 PM EDT reply actions
i do agree that trading gabby now would be a pretty good idea bc we could build for our team 2-3 years down the road, where most of us agree we are goin to be potentially very deep and ready to contend, but i personally would keep gabby. first reason is i happen to really enjoy watching him play and hes very low maintenance for a player of his caliber(just seems to want to go out there and contribute, never hear about him bitching or anything) another reason is that i dont want to watch the rangers be a completely irrelevant team. i think we can be a 5-8 seeded team, have an outside shot of making a run in the playoffs without compromising what we have been building for the future. i also am fundamentally against intentionally tanking and consider it very bush-league. i believe no matter where u stand, u should always try to atleast be competitive and put your best product on the ice. any knick fan can appreciate that(especially if king james doesnt land here)
Looks good on paper but these guys are competitors and there is no guarantee we finish last and get the #1 pick. It doesn’t work that way.

We should get Sather on the committee that is trying to fix the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico, would set that operation straight in a matter of 15 years or more, or if Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Paul Coffey, Grant Fuhr, etc. fell into his lap.
In Hank we trust.
the rangers are only gonna get better by “addition by subtraction”…i think the rangers are a bit closer than we think…i think what we need is what rangersmurf has been calling for, secondary scoring. I think if the rangers keep prospal and we’re to get lucky and get maybe one or 2 players that can put up 50-60pts next year (zherdev, possibly a player like demitra), they’ll be a playoff team…also don’t forget you have dubi improving every year and anisimov made huge strides at the end of last year
now on to the defense where the addition by subtraction comes into play. If the rangers were to get rid of redden, i believe the rangers will be 10times better (we can get a cheaper better defender and there is more money for free agents). When it comes to rosival i’d like to get rid of him and his contract but him as a player is not too too bad. And you would have to think del zotto and gilroy will be a lot better defensively…Now with reddens contract gone you could go get a volchenkov or michalek…but id like to see sanguinetti or potter get a shot on defense…people tend to forget the rangers had 2 rookie defensemen and redden (who just completely blows)
so for the people who want to completely start fresh i understand your pain but do you really want the rangers to become the next islanders (i mean seriously) But even then you don’t know how the prospects are gonna turn out…with gabby, henrik, dubi, cally, and staal you know what you’re gonna get and the rangers core is still pretty young, its just that some of the vets they have that are not doing their job
We can all dream about getting rid of Redden’s cap hit and the team being allowed space to become way more competitive, but my gut is, it ain’t gonna happen> the myopic, egotistical, uncaring assholes…. If it does happen, I have a lot of forgiveness in my heart. Hopefully we get scoring from MZA, AA and maybe get some production from Prust who can score. Shit, it can’t be worse than Higgins and Kotalik and Lisin!
Should we be calling Hartford >Rochester at this point or is that all still up in the air. I still don’t really understand the reason for the switch…
I think we would have got secondary scoring out of Lisen if he played. I know he was a thought to be a liablity on defense and needs work. I think he’ll be successful somewere… maybe the KHL.
At some point you have to stop worrying about the defensive liability when you’re desperate for scoring, especially when you have a goalie that is fairly adept at cleaning up after defensive liabilities.
I mean, they gave Parenteau 22 games against some of the softest competition we had to offer, and he was a full goal worse than Lisin (who played much harder comp), in terms of GA/60. PA also produced less points per 60.
So I mean, if there was room for PA, there was room for Lisin.

I agree… All year I said Lisen should play. I was just suggesting that he didn’t belong in the same ranks as Higgens and Kotalik. If he was given the chances the two of them were, I think we would have seen alot more out of him. Like I said I think he still has a career as a good second tier wing. Just not under Torts.

Why do people keep talking about blowing the team up again?
You dont trade Gaborik, their is a young core in place and more on the way.
This team has talent, it’s just developing. Its Free agency that Sather has hurt The Rangers with but that doesnt mean you go and trade everything good away. Thats an overreaction of epic proportions just like when people say ‘trade Lundqvist while his stock is high’. NO.
The core of this side: Staal, Callahan, Dubinsky, MDZ, Gaborik, Lundqvist (with Stepan, Grachev, Kreider, McDonagh to come) is very young and all under 25 bar Lundqvist and Gaborik who are just 28. Why would you split that up? You build around it.

+1
I have no problem giving rookies ice time and developing them, even if that looses games, however to intentionally tank is just insane.
I have trouble believing Sather has any discipline at all. It does sound like he is saying the right things. Time will tell. Sather’s bad contracts are killing us. Gomez move was great, but we picked up Kotalick and Brashier.
Philly is tougher then we were this year, but we were as close as you can get to beating them into the playoffs. I don’t believe we would have done as well as them, but the difference isn’t huge. Last season it was only bad coaching that kept us from beating Washington in the first round. Now I’m not saying we are a premier team in the east, but we are not so far from competing against these teams that we should consider blowing up the team and have a mass sell off.
Devlop youth, sign Staal, get rid of bad contracts if you can, and then stay out of any big contracts till the time is right.
This team has a bright future if managed correctly.
Does this mean
Buying out Brashear is an option? Not that i would want a 700k hit for the next two years but what is he going to do with this goon?
