Rangers News: Prospal Re-Signs with New York
In what is probably the last signing of the day for the New York Rangers, forward Vinny Prospal has received a contract extension for one year worth $1 million, but the veteran will earn $1.1 million in achievable bonuses as well. Prospal, age 35, finished second in scoring behind Marian Gaborik on the Blueshirts last season with 20 goals and 38 assists for a total of 58 points in 75 games played. The re-signing of Vinny was a move I felt the Rangers would be very wise to make.
Prospal was one of the very few players who clicked with Marian Gaborik and he did so while playing on both the wing and at center. That most likely was a key factor in the decision by Ranger brass to re-up the Czech Republic native. The only thing you have to worry about is injuries since he did have knee surgery last winter. It did not seem to affect him for the remainder of the season, though.

I don’t see the point in hanging onto Prust now. He and Boogaard fill the same role, except Prust could contribute offensively. Now, with what Boogaard is getting paid, paying Prust seems silly…
how about keep prust and eliminate the other. they probably end up being the wings on the 4th line and byers gets screwed again.

I think Prust will be see some significant penalty kill time this season. Torts started to use him there last season because he’s got some speed and is all about hustle.
Prust is good enough to be a 3rd line player. He’s not a goon. He can play. But he’ll also fight anything and anyone.

Prospal was worth at least 3 mil on the open market
if joker got 3 mil, armstong got 3 mil, vinny easily could have gotten more elsewhere, so Sather saved at least 1 mil back that he overpaid boogie

everyone says Dru is over paid by about 3 mil a year. Which means he is paid 175% of his worth.

Boogaard is not here to put up points, comparing his point output against a regular player shows a lack of understanding about who he is and what he does. Please try and understand that hockey is not all about stats …. you’ve made several posts like this one and in my eyes you have no clue what you are talking about.

Seriously, you’re pissing on yourself here.
saying Boogaard is nothing pointwise compared to Drury is imbecilic. They do two different roles, not comparable. I don’t give a crap about any stats as it refers to that kind of comparison, its stupid and serves no purpose.
How many fights did Drury have? Boogaard had 9 or 10. So Drury doesn’t match up to Boogaard in terms of toughness. See how DUMB stats can be? They are not the do-all and end-all and should not be considered so. That’s all.

I understand quite well what Boogaard is “supposed” to do.
This idea that grown men care about a guy that can’t skate, pass, or shoot is funny. The only thing they’re worried about with him is that he might cheap shot them out of their careers. So yeah, I guess that’s worth $1.6m.
Of course, the goal of hockey is to score goals. It’s not to win fights, it’s not to be intimidating, it’s to score goals. To score goals, you need to be able to move the puck in the direction of the opposing net and generate shots. Boogaard has shown zero ability to do that in the 5 years he was in Minnesota. Zero.
This isn’t 80’s hockey where it’s a free for all out there. In a cap era, you better bring something to the table other than fighting, especially if you’re going to be paid $1.6m.
His contract is a waste, plain and simple.

realistically, Staal isn’t going to get that $4Mill figure. He has no bargaining chips and no right to arbitration. He’s gunna get low balled & there will be enough left over to sign Girardi, Prust & him.
I love how Torts preached about changing the dynamic in the locker room and getting younger. The only changes are Shelly/Boogard & MZA/Voros.

I don’t see how Kreider’s gonna make it into the lineup though…
Sather’s talking out of both sides of his mouth. His idea of leaving space for youth is 1 spot on offense and 1 on defense each year.
In 2 years I was hoping McIlrath would fill the enforcer role for peanuts. 1.6 for 4. I still can’t believe it. And our 1st round pick on a future enforcer. And the Islanders got all the picks I wanted. And the Devils got Volchenkov. Calgon, take me away…

being analytical is fine and all, but its all about what happens out on the ice, and having Boogaard there will do more good for the team than his salary number. Nobody cares who makes what when you are on the ice. nobody cares what your stats are when you are on the ice. That’s my whole point. Stats are helpful when unbiased, but out on the ice players don’t check their stats before doing something. And for me, I like players who give their all and don’t care what their stats are going to look like once broken down. I do not trust stats to tell the whole story about a player because they simply do not. Intangibles and heart and desire have zero to do what any stat. I’ve said all i’m going to say about that.
I like the signing since we lost Shelley and needed someone. Personally, i’d rather overpay for protection than overpay for defensemen and blocked shots.

you very well might be right about that ...
but that’s not something we need to worry about TODAY. Sather has shown he can make moves regardless of the situation he is in, and any long-term deals this organization might make will obviously have to take not only that but many other factors into their decisions. Signing an enforcer to a generous contract is hardly this organization’s biggest worry or blunder.

having Boogaard there will do more good for the team than his salary number.
And that’s where you derail. In the salary cap era, the number is everything to a team. Chicago won because they had a team of guys overplaying their salary number. Boogaard cannot overplay his number. It’s not possible with the limited ice time he gets, and the lack of offense or defense he provides.
G-A-Pts and +/-, the “boxscore” stats do not tell the story, I 100% agree with that statement. There are many, many stats that hide behind those numbers that fill in alot of those gaps, and there are more by the day.
For instance…more and more we’re seeing that blocked shots is highly overrated. Blocked shots mean you’re in your own end too much…and obviously run higher risks at allowing goals if you spend too much time in your own zone.
At the same time…there are measures now of how often you spend time in your own zone, and how productive you are in the offensive zone. And I’ll assure you, Boogaard’s are not pretty.
Shelley is really a much, much better playing than Boogaard. To pay more for less production is atrocious, even if you see them being effectively the same.

I agree about....
“Shelley is really a much, much better playing than Boogaard.” … I never wanted to lose Shelley. But Ssather didn’t want to give him the length of contract he wanted, so he let Shelley go. I disagree with this decision but Sather made it. And to make sure they had an enforcer, he went and got another one, younger, bigger, and meaner. And yes, he gave a little too generous a salary. But at least he filled a need with someone who has proven he can fill the basic needs an enforcer can fill. He’s no Shelly in terms of his playmaking, I totally agree. But Boogaard can forecheck, and hit people. And hit them hard. As for the slight overpayment, if that 500K breaks this team’s bank/cap, that’s a different issue and cannot be blamed on Boogaard getting a little extra.

Should say “player” not “playing,” but I do that alot when I type fast and have lots of thoughts too quickly.
Anyhow…no, 500k doesn’t seem like a lot when you compare it to Redden, Dru, and Rozsival. But it’s not a justification for doing it. “Well we overpaid 3 guys, who cares if we do it again?” is what keeps leading this team down the path towards the bottom. That was the same attitude last year that brought us Brashear and Kotalik.
We thought maybe Sather turned around this year…Biron for 875k is a steal, as is EC for 950K and Prospal for 2.1. So sure, he ‘wasted’ those saving on Boogaard, and you’re ok with that. That’s fine by me.
I happen to vehemently disagree, because we signed a player that is below replacement level in hockey skills, and fills a role that might very well be outdated in 4 years (there’s not alot of guys racking up PIMs and fights these days that can’t at least provide something offensively or defensively). That’s my opinion, I just happen to use numbers to express it, because numbers help to better explain the story, as they’re tangible.

I understand what you are saying
And I am not totally against every point you made. But stats do not mean everything to me nor should they. And I am not going to quibble over paying a little bit extra for someone to fill a role that is not easy to fill but is every bit as important to my way of thinking as any role on the team. Bitching about overpaying an eofrcer when you overpay practiclaly everybody else on the team, it sounds kind of petty to me. I personally think overpaying Redden and Drury to name 2 is far worse for this team’s structure than overpaying a little for on-ice protection. I have no numbers to back that up with and no numbers can truly show that kind of value/worth a player has.
Did you expect Shelley to put up points when we got him? I doubt it, nobody did. I certainly didn’t, and I was gung-ho in my exuberance of obtaining Shelley when it first happened.
We won’t know what Boogaard’s impact will be until the games begin, so any criticism of his cap number is just criticism based on other factors that simply are not as important as what happens out on the ice.

Did you expect Shelley to put up points when we got him?
Production for me means shots…if you’re generating more shots than your opponent, you stand to win more often than not. Maybe not in a single game, but over the course of a year, shots are what lead to goals, and thus wins. Generating shots also mean you’re not allowing shots against, which obviously reduces the chance you get scored on, again leading to wins.
So…to that end I didn’t investigate Shelley that closely. I will say that I don’t believe 6 pts in 21 games was what Shelley would do here, nor what he would do had we resigned him. That line though, Prust-AA-Shelley, was quite good at keeping the puck moving in the right direction, and it probably could’ve continued.
As for the rest, where we diverge, as I do with most, is on the value of having an enforcer. Toughness is one thing, but guys whose only role is fighting, to me, have no business getting a contract in the cap era. To me, he’s overpaid by more than $500k, he’s overpaid by $1.65m.
Old school hockey fans like yourself usually defend the need, as 80’s and 90’s hockey had at least one of those guys per team, and hockey would sometimes be a free-for-all.
These days, your toughness has to come from your role players….on Chicago that meant Eager or Bolland…for Philly, Carcillo, Hartnell, Asham. For us it can come from a Prust or maybe one of the kids, like Byers. Not heavyweights by any means…but guys that won’t back down, and still give you 10-20 points, which compared to a Booger or Orr is alot.
It’s a disagreement that won’t be resolved between us though, and that’s fine. There’s always room for differences in opinions, even for us stat-geeks.

shots? wow. I didn’t ever think that shots were the most important thing a player can bring to the game. HIS ROLE IS NOT TO SHOOT THE PUCK. It’s like comparing a pitcher to a hitter.
As for me being “old school” as it were, you cannot take fighting out of hockey, because then it isn’t hockey. Intimidation is as old as the game itself, and is a very important factor of the game. You disagree with that, that’s your opinion and that’s fine by me, but it is still a factor no matter if people choose to ignore it or go in a different direction in terms of playing the game and the makeup of a team. Intimidation is a factor and should never be underestimated. Until they remove it from the rules, to disregard it or demean its importance is simply not very smart in my view.
its OK that we disagree, but no stat you or anyone can quote me will change my viewpoint that intimidation is a very important facet of hockey that must be addressed by any team looking to play professional ice hockey.

Not him individually, the team while he’s on the ice. If he’s really having this impact by hitting and forechecking..that should manifest itself in the team being able to get opportunities to shoot while he’s out there.

And also..if the forecheck is successful, the team shouldn’t be allowing shots at the other end. That’s how shot rates are considered productive, and how they in large part take into account an ability to forecheck.

I also never said to take fighting out of hockey. Hockey without fighting would probably lead to a death on the ice by stick injury or some other frustration inducing act. If nothing else, that’s why fighting needs to be in, it’s a chippy game when emotions run high.
I merely said that your fighters have to bring something else to the table these days besides fighting. Dubinsky fights, Prust fights, Avery fights. That’s all I’m saying.

You're right that his job isn't to shoot the puck
it’s to help the team win. And as RangerSmurf pointed out, the way to win is to score more goals than your opponent, most easily done by taking more shots. Boogaard doesn’t help us take more shots than the other team, and as such, does absolutely nothing to help the team win. (Granted, I agree with RS that enforcers are completely useless in today’s NHL. Maybe you think Gaborik will score more with Booger on the team, in which case he’s worth some money. I just doubt that effect will occur.)

At the time of their signings, this one is easily worse, from a hockey perspective
At the time, Brashear was certainly trending down, but still had some offensive ability remaining in him. He fell off a 20k cliff in terms of ability, that obviously makes it 50 times worse now. (I love arbitrary numbers too)
Boogaard literally has no hockey skills, as someone said, he’s a boxer on skates, that’s all he does, that he makes even more than Brashear, even though it can be buried, makes it all the worse. Then add on that the Rangers are already strapped for cap room, even worse than last year, and there’s really no justification for the move. Give Shelley his 3/3.3 if you really want to fill the spot, who cares about age for that role.
From a fans’ perspective, there’s no doubt Brashear is worse..his hit on Betts signed his death warrant with any compassion fans may have given him, that’s understood, there I can’t argue at all.

Boogaard can forecheck, and hit people. Not necessarily with his fists. To say he’s “a boxer on skates” is not correct, he can do more than throw punches. When you see him play game in and game out, you’ll see he’s not just a puncher on skates. he won’t win any offensive skills competitions but he can and does do more than fight. You’ll see.

To nerd at you for a second....
Booger had 83 hits in 350 minutes of ice time this year, or .237 hits every minute he’s out there, so about every 4 minutes he has 1 hit. So basically…once a game for him. If that’s the rate at which Booger hits people, it’s not exactly intimidating.
For comparison…..Boyle had 143 hits in 593 minutes, or .239 hits every minute he’s out there.
Now, I won’t even begin to pretend to tell you that getting hit by Boogaard is the same as getting hit by Boyle, Boyle’s a wuss. It’s just to give an idea of what impact Boogaard will actually have.
Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay

again, your stats do not take into account that the whole “hits” stat is really kind of bogus. What criteria describes a counted “hit” anyway? That is why I do not care about any of those esoteric stats. Like hometown scoring, sometimes things like that get a little skewed. Saying Callahan is a more intimidating player than Boogaard because he gets credited with more “hits” is plain silly, and gives far too much importance to certain esoteric stats. But I understand your point. I simply don’t care about any hit stat, again stats do not tell the entire story, and can be spun in any way you want them to. Opposing players do not cringe when about to be hit by Callahan, but I guarantee you they do when Boogaard is streaking down at them.

I didn’t check Callahan, but while he has more hits, he also gets a shit-ton more ice time than Booger, so I’d be surprised if Booger’s rate weren’t higher.
And yes..getting hit by a small truck is different than getting hit by Callahan, I acknowledge that when comparing to Boyle.
To flip it, there’s also no stat that adds up the times Booger will streak down and miss the big intimidating hit, and lead to rushes going the other way. It’s not only the numbers that are missing the whole story sometimes.
Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay
by George E. Ays on Jul 1, 2010 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions
plus, that kind of esoteric stat doesn’t take into account how the player was used, against what kind of player(s) he was used against, there are so many other factors involved that I simply cannot accept that the hit stat has any real value. That is not a slam against you, it is a slam against that stat, and other stats that do not show the full complexity of the play. And that is why those kind of stats have no meaning to me whatsoever.
Just because he was a certain level of stat player in Minnesota does not mean he’ll automatically be the same kind of level stat player here.

Agree on all counts.
I actually hate the hits stat, I just felt like using it because I don’t have much else that’s tangible to argue with.
Rink bias is well-known (and MSG is one of the most favorable when it comes to hits), so yeah, I expect Booger’s numbers will go up.
And while hits aren’t themselves tied to opposition, there are stats that measure the quality of opponent a player was against. So you can combine the two to start to paint the picture.
I also will agree once more that the current available stats do not (yet) paint the whole picture. They get probably about 70% at best, but it gets better by the day. Maybe when you’ve been watching hockey for 50 years and I’m closer to 40, we can revisit the argument.

i had this horrible daydream
that colton orr was picked up on waivers a few years ago from boston and blossomed into one of the top fighters in the league, and then was allowed to bolt last summer, replaced by donald brashear, who proved to be washed up, so he was dumped in the minors which led to a couple of trades being engineered to bring in jody shelley and brandon prust because sather finally realized you need tough guys that can actually play a little, and then earlier today shelley signed with philly and the rangers replaced him with derek boogard, a tough guy who can’t skate
it wasn’t quite as bad as the ones where i hear a random voice saying stuff like:

“we are pleased to introduce our new general manager, glen sather…”
