How McDonagh May Spell the End of Wade Redden

This post was written before the trade for Steve Eminger.  So when reading this, don't forget that Eminger is not even mentioned within this article.  Also, this was written before the Dan Girardi extension, so that piece is a bit outdated.

In case you missed it, Ryan McDonagh signed with the Rangers. This leaves the Rangers with five signed defensemen: Michael Del Zotto, Michal Rozsival, Matt Gilroy, Ryan McDonagh, and of course, Wade Redden. Currently, Marc Staal and Dan Girardi are RFA’s, with the latter filing for arbitration the other day. It is highly unlikely that the Rangers will go ahead and let one of them go, even if Girardi is awarded the $3 million he is rumored to be looking for, as arbitration deals are one-year deals.

Now, should the Rangers sign both Staal and Girardi, that leaves the Rangers with seven defensemen. The no-doubters for the roster are Del Zotto, Rozsival, Staal, and Girardi. That leaves two spots for Gilroy, McDonagh, and Redden. Gilroy will probably make the team again, assuming he doesn’t forget how to play hockey in camp. Remember, Gilroy hit the 40 game wall last year, which is normal for college kids coming to the professional ranks. Gilroy also had the compacted NHL schedule affect his stamina, as he played 40 NHL games in under 3 months. With a year, and the experience of one 82 game season, under his belt, he should come back this season and play more consistently.

Star-divide

That leaves one spot left for either McDonagh or Redden. If McDonagh makes the team out of camp, which many expect him to do, then all of a sudden, Redden becomes the odd man out. With rumblings in Newsday that Redden will be waived, remember that Newsday is a Dolan owned entity, this will help fuel the Redden-will-be-waived fire. The Rangers will have no need for a $6.5 million defenseman sitting in the press box and eating up precious salary cap space. In this scenario, Redden would likely be waived to clear up space, and the Rangers would acquire a cheap, veteran seventh defenseman of the Anders Eriksson ilk.

The Rangers organization has been fairly quiet on the Redden front, but if the rumors are true that they are indeed looking for a veteran seventh defenseman, then it makes you wonder where exactly Redden fits into the equation. They won’t pay him that salary to sit in the press box and eat up cap room, but we know coach John Tortorella won’t play him if he’s not one of the top six, especially when that top-six includes four integral parts of the Rangers future on the blue line. Call me insane all you want, but I am slowly beginning to believe that the Wade Redden era in New York is very quickly coming to an end. Last time I let my guard down with this team, they crushed me on the final game of the year. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen again. I believe.

How much does this

Continue to stoke the flames of the “clearing space for Kovalchuk” rumors? Even if re-signing Staal eats up too much of the remaining cap space + offseason cap overage cushion?

by MyFavBaseballSquadron on Jul 13, 2010 7:06 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

It doesn’t at all. How did you make that connection?

by Dave Shapiro on Jul 13, 2010 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Most casual fans don’t understand how exactly the cap works. Thus they’ll see Redden’s impending waive and demotion and think that it’s a move to clear up cap space. When at this point in the season (or offseason) it’s really more paperwork than anything else.

I think it’s very easy for fans to confuse (major roster move + big name FA + Rangers history of targeting big name FA) to jump to conclusions about whether the Rangers are in the Kovalchuk sweepstakes.

by MyFavBaseballSquadron on Jul 13, 2010 9:57 AM EDT up reply actions

It won’t stoke the flames any more than they already are. There’s a solid percentage, though minority, of fans that truly believe we’re in the Kovy running. Everyone is pretty convinced Redden is gone, and they want to spend the money quickly to improve the anemia on offense.

The fact that Redden’s money comes back on to the cap next offseason is the concept that has been elusive, despite the situation with Brashear.

The only way I could have seen them serious about Kovalchuk is if they basically let all the FAs, RFA and UFA walk except for Staal and maybe Girardi and then waived Redden. Suspend disbelief and say they signed him, they’d still have to fill out the rest of the roster with rookies.

A bit fuzzy on how that really works. If in theory we send Redden down, do we have to do that every year up in the offseason and down after training camp? Cause someone said that I am pretty sure but I have never heard that before.

“Gilroy hit the 40 game wall last year, which is normal for college kids…”

Hitting the wall may be normal but Gilroy isn’t normal for a college kid in that he is older. I’m certain he’ll be better.

I don’t know what his stock is with the other GMs, but I would sure consider packaging him up. He could turn out great, but being 26 this year he may also be at his peak..

by CTrangerfan on Jul 13, 2010 9:45 AM EDT reply actions

i wouldnt say he’s peaked but i would certainly consider packaging him to go after a need area. when put with a cally or a dubi the return we got could be huge. im not completely comfortable with loosing him, it would depend on what it was going for. if there is one are that i do have some confidence in sather however, its on the trade market

by BronxBeliever on Jul 13, 2010 9:52 AM EDT up reply actions

I truely think he’ll be better. He has maturity and is hopefully using it to develop as we speak. I’m just wondering if there is a percieved value for him that would make it worth sending him out.

by CTrangerfan on Jul 13, 2010 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions

i honestly think hed be a better winger then a Dman, but if he can polish up his D (and not be paired with redden all season which im sure hurt his development and stats) he should be a reliable guy to have back there with some explosive potential.

by teknics on Jul 13, 2010 6:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Did Gilroy hit a wall?

Or was he consistently the Rangers 6th or 7th best defenseman throughout the season?

by dar9898 on Jul 13, 2010 9:50 AM EDT reply actions

we didnt even carry seven until we picked up erikkson towards the end of the year and i think he was put in the press box around the 65 game mark

by BronxBeliever on Jul 13, 2010 9:52 AM EDT up reply actions

that doesn’t mean we didn’t have better defensemen at Hartford

by dar9898 on Jul 13, 2010 9:54 AM EDT up reply actions

he didn’t necessarily hit a wall. maybe he performed steadily the whole season. you said he hit a “rookie wall” and it’s “normal for college kids coming to the professional ranks. Gilroy also had the compacted NHL schedule affect his stamina, as he played 40 NHL games in under 3 months. With a year, and the experience of one 82 game season, under his belt, he should come back this season and play more consistently.” Are there studies showing a decline in performance at a certain point in the season for rookies versus veterans? A “wall?” Maybe Gilroy performed fairly evenly throughout the season and just wore out Tortorella’s developmental patience. Maybe we shouldn’t expect a huge improvement from an adjustment to an 82 game season. Maybe his spot on the ice isn’t guaranteed (his spot on the roster is).

by dar9898 on Jul 13, 2010 10:17 AM EDT up reply actions

i didnt write this article

i only commented above and said nothing about a wall

by dar9898 on Jul 13, 2010 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions

There are no “studies”, but it’s common knowledge that NCAA players in the NHL straight out of college hit a wall, especially in a condensed season.

It isn’t really out of the realm of possibility to expect an improvement from Gilroy, who played well until December when he hit 40 games, then tailed off.

by Dave Shapiro on Jul 13, 2010 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

common knowledge? did joe morgan tell you that?

I’m not saying it’s out of the realm to expect an improvement from Gilroy, who like MDZ has played little defense against adults in his life. however, i don’t think we should account for his performance with some mysterious “rookie wall” and believe that he will be automatically fitter than he was as a healthy 26 year old.

did gilroy tail off after december? tortorella definitely played him less. but, for example, his points per minute increased.

by dar9898 on Jul 13, 2010 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions

It is common knowledge that NCAA players hit a wall due to a short season. Don’t be a sarcastic ass. Do some research, like I do for all my articles.

It’s not a rookie wall, it’s a NCAA rookie wall. NCAA players only play 40 games for the entire year, while OHL players play upwards of 60-70, depending on playoffs. That is why NCAA players hit a wall.

by Dave Shapiro on Jul 13, 2010 10:50 AM EDT up reply actions

This may not be THE reason why he tailed off, but it is definitely a contributing factor. He looked sluggish at the end of the year, and he said that he was dead tired at the Olympic break.

by Dave Shapiro on Jul 13, 2010 10:52 AM EDT up reply actions

was he going to tell reporters he was being benched for being stagnant and less effective than his teammates?
I’m guessing his teammates (both older and younger than he) were tired as well. Except for Voros. He may have just felt ennui

by dar9898 on Jul 13, 2010 11:06 AM EDT up reply actions

That statement was before he was benched. His benching came in March, he made this statement in February.

by Dave Shapiro on Jul 13, 2010 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

His ice time had already been cut by Tortorella. He’d effectively been collared by Tortorella long before March.

by dar9898 on Jul 13, 2010 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions

Going from 1st pairing to 3rd pairing =/= benching, it means cut ice time. Ice time gets cut when you stop producing. His benching came in March.

by Dave Shapiro on Jul 13, 2010 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know if he hit the wall but he did look sluggish which is odd because in training camp he was the “most fit” guy on the team. Maybe he was more mentally drained then physical.

As long

as Redden is making 6.5 million dollars a season, he is also a no-brainer in the lineup.

Redden will be in there- unless a trade can be found, which i doubt.

Burying him in the AHL is not something we should expect.

by Peterman700 on Jul 13, 2010 10:08 AM EDT reply actions

Maybe

But the Rangers were willing to scratch him a couple of times last year. And the blueline is starting to look very crowded, particularly if (it really should be a matter of when) Staal is re-signed.

Even if they’re willing to carry 7 D they’ll have at least one spare part:

Staal
Girardi
Del Zotto
Rozsival
Gilroy
Eminger
Redden
McDonagh

Not to mention if any other Hartford guys are given any sort of consideration.

It might be circumstantial evidence, but there’s mounting evidence that Redden could be moved way off-Broadway for this upcoming season and hopefully beyond.

by MyFavBaseballSquadron on Jul 13, 2010 10:19 AM EDT up reply actions

I just don't see it right now

Sather would have to do a huge sell job on any Redden move, that salary is worse than handcuffs.

Even the Rangers can always afford to be right at the cap, I don’t see why everyone here wants to dump Redden and then overpay for Kovalchuk. I know he’s a prolific scorer, but still, the fact remains you need a whole team to win.

by Peterman700 on Jul 13, 2010 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed on kovy

Just like the lebron talk. Please just sign somewhere so we can move on. LA would be great so we don’t have to deal w/him in our division.

Also, the rangers would have to clear more space then just redden to make a play for kovy given we sign staal, bc that would already put us over the cap if he gets 4-5 mil I believe.

by Conway on Jul 13, 2010 10:21 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

With the Redden theory, it’s always a “I have to see it to believe it” ideology. Not that I disagree with you Dave, it’s just how it is- for me anyway.

Yea because they matched the offer sheet given to Hljarmarsson by the Sharks. Now, Chicago has to rid itself of one more contract. Sharp and Campbell are being dangled, which is equal to us trying to trade Redden and Callahan. I would love Sharp on this team and i would give up a first and third rounder for him. I really think the Champs have no other choice but to trade him but i could be wrong.

by louielounz1 on Jul 13, 2010 2:00 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I’d be for it. capgeek says Sharp is getting just under $4 mil for the next 2 seasons before becoming UFA. Cap issues aside, he’s 28, likely hitting his prime, probably would be great with Gabby, and would give us some options with how to play Prospal and Dubinsky on the 1st and 2nd line. Maybe I just don’t have enough faith in EC..

mmm no. Split up Gabby and Sharp. They are both scorers, and I don’t think Sharp has played center in a while. Sharp should be put on a second line to balance out the offensive production.
