George Steinbrenner Passes Away

This is not hockey related, but it is a very sad day for sports.  Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, nicknamed "The Boss", has passed away from a massive heart attack suffered this morning in Tampa.  Steinbrenner revolutionized the way professional sports owners conducted themselves, and single-handedly turned the Yankees from a great team to a global team, worth over $1 billion.

Yankee fan or not, many respected Steinbrenner for his commitment to the Yankees, and his unflinching desire to throw hundreds of millions of dollars in payroll to help his team win, even if it meant operating in the red.  Steinbrenner's success and influence on the Yankees is second to none, even moreso than Babe Ruth, and the new Yankee Stadium is aptly nicknamed "The House That George Built".

There will never be another person, or owner, like The Boss.  Rest in peace.

George was a good bowler, and a good man. He was one of us. He was a man who loved the outdoors… and bowling, and as a surfer he explored the beaches of Southern California, from La Jolla to Leo Carrillo and… up to… Pismo. He died, like so many young men of his generation, he died before his time. In your wisdom, Lord, you took him, as you took so many bright flowering young men at Khe Sanh, at Langdok, at Hill 364. These young men gave their lives. And so would George. George, who loved bowling. Good night, sweet prince.

George and Billy together again.

Whether you love the Yanks or hate them, there is no denying he revolutionized the sport.

RIP Big Stein.

By the way, we should mention this is a very tough week for the Yankee family, as longtime PA announcer Bob Sheppard passed away over the weekend.

I know Bob is best known for his work with the Yankees, but for me I’ll always remember him for “Simms………to Bavaro…………………..first down”

Bob Sheppard did everything he touched with a great sense of dignity and class and there hasnt been many and may never be another who can as he did. today’s PA men are so worried about the flare of the call, rip to the voice of G-d.

Sheppard's death was upsetting enough

and with The Boss on top of it, it’s a difficult time for the Yankees. RIP to both.

Now Sheppard and God himself can debate whose voice is better over a beer or two.

A friend of mine put it this way:

“Shepard had to be first, so he could announce George’s entrance to heaven.”

I thought it fitting.

I dont want to be the d**k

But George is the reason why baseball players are overpaid. And I pose this question:

If you died or anyone else in your family died would THEY care?

The answer is no.

He's the reason baseball players are reasonably paid

and forced other owners to stop pocketing all their profits and actually pay the people who play the sport. And I say that as a Mets fan who despises the Yankees.

Haha reasonably paid? You should compare the salaries of baseball players to the 99% of the country that isn’t in that tax bracket and do not get paid to play a game.

RIP Boss. Thurman, Billy, and George are letting by gones be by gones on that big dirt diamond in the sky.

I’ll miss George because of his larger than life personality, and his willingness to say whatever crossed his mind, whether it was humorous, sentimental, or just plain dumb.

Those types of personalities are going by the wayside in this PC, pre-programmed world, and he will be missed. Just glad I didn’t have to work for him!

RIP Big guy. When all is said and done, you won.
