Thursday News and Notes
The Rangers agreed to terms with Brodie Dupont yesterday. Dupont played 80 games with the Wolfpack last season, tallying 17 goals and 22 assists, along with 124 penalty minutes. He tied for second on the team in shorthanded goals (two), ranked fifth in goals and points, sixth in plus/minus rating (plus-four) and tied for seventh in assists Dupont established career-highs in games played, penalty minutes and shots (142), and recorded a career-high, nine multi-point efforts.
Has another team in NHL history had more 3rd and 4th line forwards under contract than the Rangers?
Rick Carpiniello joined us on Blueshirt Banter Radio last night, and had some interesting comments on Glen Sather, John Tortorella, and Wade Redden. Give it a listen if you haven't already. Thanks Rick, and thanks again to all you "Boneheads" who ventured over to tune in. We hope you will join us again.
I would rather see the Rangers take a chance on Simon Gagne than any of the other names floating around (Frolov, Demitra, etc). I think he is worth the risk. $5.25M cap hit for 10-11, then he is a UFA. Assuming Wade Redden's money will be off the books, they can afford Gagne. Joe will have a story later today about getting Gagne as well.
I officially no longer care where Ilya Kovalchuk plays next year. As long as it isn't Manhattan.
Taking a quick look around SBNation:
My man Ed Valentine (along with some great help from his team including our buddy Joe) is doing an awesome job with SBNation New York, make sure you add it to your daily read.
Anaheim Calling has video from Ducks Conditioning Camp of the guy the Rangers didn't draft.
I'm not the only one who wants Simon Gagne on his team, Mike at Raw Charge wants Gagne for his Lightning.
Brad at Defending Big D has a look back at the career of Darryl Sydor.
One last thing, starting Monday we are going to be running a special series on the "Greatest Rangers by the Numbers", celebrating the best players at each number for the Rangers. Some are obvious (1), some are not (10). We think you will enjoy looking back at some of the great players to don the Blueshirt.

Doesn’t make sense to me at all with Simon Gagne. The cap hit is to high among other things. When healthy he is a good player a great creator with the puck. What would it cost, if he was the missing piece to make our Stanley Cup run then yeah get him. Dubi scored more goals then him last year and the year before that Gagne scored over thirty. He was great in the playoffs.. Gagne is a UFA and he will be highly motivated but what if he gets injured. If the Rangers make any more trades it should be for someone that they can build around like a top center or a trade cap relief related like moving Rozi . My choice would be to call kids up rather then adding players anymore players
Since the face been revealed the game got real
Agree…don’t see the sense in this. Good chance he only stays with us for 1 year and a chance that year is filled with injuries. I think we have all come to the realization that this year is a wash no matter what. It’s either miss playoffs of sneak in and lose first round.
If it was a cap for cap trade I could see it but Philly wont want to take any cap back.

As always, it depends what the Rangers give up. Since for Philly this is a cap clearing move, you’re right, they don’t want anything that will give them money back. So that’s prospects and picks.
Sauer and a 2nd or 3rd, or maybe Sauer and someone like Nigel Williams might just be enough, since it’s a 1 year ‘rental’ for a guy with a lengthy injury history. Keep in mind that despite his injury history, he’s still played 69+ games in 7 of his 10 seasons. And he’s a ~65 pt player when he is healthy.
Since the year is really a nothing year anyway, there’s no harm in taking the gamble. The only thing you really worry about is him having a great year and Sather throwing 5 and $25m more at him.

if that was the deal
i would absolutely take him. it would ensure that redden would be sent down, and when healthy is an excellent scorer. we would be giving up only a minor piece in sauer and a 2nd that we have two of. if he gets hurt, kids will be on their way up and everyone would be happy. if he stays healthy, he can absolutely help us get into the playoffs. i wouldnt give up too much more for him though

I would really try not to give up any draft picks for a while, even low ones (ex Boyle, Shelly)…I have faith in Gordie and his crew.
by Blueshirt in Paris on Jul 15, 2010 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions
i wouldnt mind giving up a 3rd and the only reason i would consider a 2nd is because we have carolina’s 2nd rounder for next yr from the sangs trade. i would have to agree though, goride makes trading any picks a very difficult decision
by BronxBeliever on Jul 15, 2010 9:37 AM EDT up reply actions
I'd pass on gagne as well
If the rangers wanted to add one more piece before going into the season(which i wouldn’t want in the first place) I would rather go after demitra. We have plenty of wingers but aren’t deep @ all @ the center position(true centers) demitra can probably come cheap for 1 year and maybe we catch lightning in a bottle like we did with prospal. If not & he plays only 12 games the whole season then it won’t hurt us that much bc we didn’t invest too much into him anyway.

The OIlers. Though they also have more 5th liners than us too.

I dont want Gange either but some of the reasoning is funny. People keep saying about Gagne and Demitra that “oh what if they get injured” or “they have terrible history with injuries” We are a team rebuilding through youth and if we give a vet one year what is the big deal if they get injured???? we use his spot for a young guy trying to break the big club and give him much needed experience for the upcoming camp.
Good point but to me the questions is can one of the kids come up and play now? If the answer is no, then go out a get someone short term to fill the gap. If the answer is yes, let them play.
So I assume if we are looking for a player like Gagne the answer to the above question is no.
To me we would be better served to try to find out who on the team will be displaced by some of the kids when they get here (Dubi, Rozi, just an example…) and try to trade for someone that would complement the team in a few years from now when we turn the corner…or try to dump some salary.

I'd take Gagne
for Redden. Other than that, he’s fragile, disappears for long stretches of time and is suspect defensively. Pass.

true but smurfs proposal above would be something that sather would have to look very seriously if it was a possibility…. it would obviously require demoting redden, but i can’t see a problem with that lol

Never ever trade within your division
You will see a perfect example of this when McNabb destroys the Eagles this year.
I am a firm believer you never ever help anyone out within your division. Even if it helps you at the sametime. The player you trade away [barring it is an everyday player] will red circle every game against his former team.
Lets say the ‘prospect’ you trade becomes a star or top 6 forward? How much would it hurt watching this prospect flurish on an arch rival/division foe’s team? That is the gift that keeps on giving. And its not the good kind of giving.
Id rather have the kids play or take a one year gamble on Demitra.
OUCH MY ELBOW HURTS!
But as Gange has a NTC, he could dictate their options to an extent.
I don’t think what we would send back would be of equal value…thus not a prospect that will haunt us. Philly doesn’t have a lot of options on this…trade to wherever Gange says its ok or just waive him with nothing in return.
by Blueshirt in Paris on Jul 15, 2010 10:33 AM EDT up reply actions
True
DId not think of the NTC. Additionally Gagne is injury prone. If it was Carter instead of Gagne I would listen.
OUCH MY ELBOW HURTS!
carter would command a much higher price
the relationship between gagne and the philly front office has soured tremendously over the last few weeks over them asking him to waive the NTC. they would likely take a very unequal trade for him, but trading him to us might still be a stumbling block
by BronxBeliever on Jul 15, 2010 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions
But Carter we could build around. Then we would have two legitimate scoring lines that you could build off. Doesn’t seem like Carter would work with Gabby, on the powerplay and stuff. Spread them over two lines and you couldn’t bulk up to stop one line like oppoents can now with just Gabs. LOL I am done with my pipe dream, don’t think they would trade us Carter.
Since the face been revealed the game got real
and Carter has an insane contract

youre right on all levels there. i would much prefer carter to gagne, but they would never send him here. i think youre also right that in that dream, carter would most likely center the 2nd line as he is much more of a scorer than a playmaker, along the lines of olli 5 yrs ago. maybe once carter is old and washed up we can trade for him at the deadline too… theres a little hope lol
by BronxBeliever on Jul 15, 2010 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions
The Rangers haven’t added any scoring, and you could make the sarcastic argument (like I would) that they sacrificed scoring when they swapped Shelley for Boogaardenstein. I think right now they are relying too heavily on guys to exceed last year’s goal output. Cally, Aves, Dubi. Plus, who knows what you will get from Vinny “Bond Villian” Prospal this year.
One year stopgap on Gagne is worth it, IMO

agreed
but obivously it depends on the asking price. if it really is a salary dump through and through for them, and we could send sauer and a 3rd for him, thats a done deal for me

What does our training staff say about Gagne?
We have one of the top staffs in the game, if they think they can keep him healthy, and we don’t give up much, we can use him. I don’t see him being much more then Nasalund was 2 yes ago though. Anyone know Gagne’s stats in the shoot out? Even if he can score there, that’s worth it. As crappy as it is, we need a SO scorer bad. Unfortunatly, they are a reality, and there’s an extra point to be had in every one of them. We don’t have anyone who gets it done there.
by BuckarooClub on Jul 15, 2010 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions
Gagne for his career (through 4/11/2010) was 5 for 19 in his lifetime. So better than Gaborik, but not great.
Small samples are fun though.

And incidentally...
I’ll sign on for the Naslund production (24-22-46) out of Gagne right now. If he stays healthy, he’s even better than that, but 46 pts in, say, 65 games or so is fine too.

But what are the chances Sather will sign him only for one year.
by It may HAVE to Last a Lifetime on Jul 15, 2010 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions
sign who for 1 yr?
gagne is under contract for next season, sather would not be negotiating a contract with him. do you mean he would want to resign him after next season?
by BronxBeliever on Jul 15, 2010 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions
I understand Gagne is a better player then Demitra. But if it was just a short one year fix why give anything up? Why not just try to sign Demitra to a one year deal keep the prospects and picks and revisit what they need next year? I know you guys talked about Demitra yesterday but if I HAD to pick between the two as far as cost, Demitra makes more sense to me on a one year deal.
Since the face been revealed the game got real
i dont think demitra has the upside we’re looking for this season. Gagne would be a legit 2nd scoring threat on this team, if he stayed healthy, and could put 60-70 pts. Demitra could be ok with gaborik, but realistically gabby wont put up more pts or goals than he did last yr (i think most of would be thrilled with a repeat performance) and he did playing the majority of his time with EC, dubi and prospal. Demitra is just as much of a health risk as gagne without any of the real upside.
One last thing to think about. We were spoiled last yr with gabby being healthy all season, but he is still a health concern. If he was to go down, what use would demitra be to us? he would only ever come here to play with gabby and doesnt have much upside of his own. taking that into account, gagne would be a viable candidate to carry this time (for a short stretch)
by BronxBeliever on Jul 15, 2010 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions
I too would love Gagne with a trade of the second rounder we got from the Canes. He is ONE missing piece we need to become relevant again. Now with that said if you told me Gilroy, AA, Cally, Dubi or Grachev would be in any package i would tell you lets go get Demitra. As much as I like Gagne his contract is bloated considering he cannot stay healthy for 65 games nontheless 82. I really believe people should gun to rob these cap hugging teams like Chicago and Philly blind. Who are they to make demands for a good return, I would give them low offers like a third or second and leave it at that.

Hartford lost their 2 top scorers
in Locke and PA (pts/game) so we really aren’t adding any depth, simply retaining some. Williams will replace Locke’s production. Overall, Hartford is an avg team at best, so they are not loaded with NHL potential talent. Other than Weiss, Byers, Grachev, Chad Johnson, and maybe 1 or 2 D, they have AHL lifers down there. At least from last years roster.
What about Pierre Larouche?
