Simon Gagne Traded to Tampa Bay
Simon Gagne has been traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning for Matt Walker and a 4th round pick. Walker is a 30 year old defenseman with just 4 NHL goals in his entire career, but does have 444 PIMs to go with it. This was a clear salary dump for the Flyers, as Walker is a $1.7 million cap hit (albeit for three more years), compared to Gagne’s $5.25 million for this season. This was an absolute steal by new Tampa GM Steve Yzerman, who has had a terrific offseason thus far, managing to dump both Walker and Andrej Meszaros on Philadelphia, a total $5.7 million cap hit for the next three seasons.

This makes me a sad panda.
I think this is proof that Redden isn’t being demoted.
I’m sure we could have beat this offer, and we wouldh ave had the cap space sans Redden’s contract.
not necessarily. we could have offered something slightly better i.e. sauer and a 4th but still have been turned down because of our history with the flyers. if it were attempting to trade away gagne i would take a little less to keep him out of division and out of a rivals hands

on paper
They still have to perform on the ice
Yeah, but still… They look damn good on paper. Dan Ellis was a trememdous pick-up in my opinion, He got Gagne, who puts up numbers when healthy. Taking a chance on Connolly was probably worth it, as he was said to be in the Seguin/Hall conversation before his injury. He’ll probably play another year in juniors to get his feet back under him.
And the Lightning still have Stamkos, Lecavlier, St. Louis, Hedman…
Yzerman is building a nice little squad down there.

I like Yzerman the GM more and more this summer. RT @DaveLozo: Yzerman: “I think fighting is an overemphasized part of the game.”
Can we please have him?

If any of this genius is within Mark Messier, we are GOLDEN when he takes over for Cigar!

I don’t know to be very honest, but, it cannot be too soon for my money.

Problem is Stevie Y was taught in the Detroit organization – that’s where he got his GM skills. Messier is being taught by who again??
Exactly (as I hold my nose). Stop disgracing Brian’s last name and get over yourself.
Broheem, if the WC didn’t show us anything, it shows that Mess has his own senses. He understands when to leave things alone, and when to take ineffective parts and sit them down. He already has senses that neither Sather (has used effectively) nor Muckler ever did.

I think Cigar better call Dallas or San Jose and get Richards or Thornton…STAT!

yea because we are one player away from competing this year so mortgage the future for now.

I repeat...
Stop disgracing Brian’s last name and get over yourself. Seriously.
I never said anything about having to reach into your future for one-year contracts. Reread my statement and you’ll find nothing there of the sort.

AGrossRecord #NYRangers acquire D Matt McCue, 22, from #Ducks for F Tomas Zaborsky, Rangers fifth-round pick in 2006.
well it shows again why we shouldnt bank on redden going down cause if send him down then to answer froese’s question we did have enough.

right now i’ve been hearing things that San Jose is looking to give Staal an Offersheet, this would mean we’d be in a situation to match the offer, so Redden still could make his way to hartford, or where ever our minor league affiliate will be… i don’t see San Jose offering more than 4.4 for Staal, but we intend to match, which i hope is the actual plan and not just a deterrent to keep teams from even bothering to offer…
I think if they do offer that is a good thing for the rangers… we match, get staal and move on instead of sitting around waiting for sather to ruin staals relation ship with the nyr’s and later walking in his free agency years due to bad blood, or demanding a trade… no need for another hold out situation…
SJ would be a horrible spot because they dont have any great prospects and they are good enough in the regular season that picks are virtually a round lower.

not to digress
but how can a contract like Kovalchuk’s be allowed? He gets 93% of the money in the first 58% of years and goes from $7.5M to $1M in yr 10 to 11. If this is the case, the salary cap is a joke (as is Glen Sather)
Watch Out for Tampa
I’m serious. Vinny, Stamkos, St. Louis, Malone and now Gagne

Not to mention effectively flipping Meszaros for Kubina.
