Rangers News: Rangers Acquire D Matt McCue from Anaheim
New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the Rangers have acquired defenseman Matt McCue from the Anaheim Ducks, in exchange for forward Tomas Zaborsky.
McCue, 22, split the 2009-10 season between the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League (AHL) and the Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL. He began the campaign with Manitoba, registering one goal and 24 penalty minutes in 10 games. McCue made his professional debut with the Moose on October 3. He notched his first professional point with a goal on November 2 vs. Norfolk, tallying Manitoba’s only goal in a 3-1 defeat.
McCue made his ECHL debut with Bakersfield on January 13 at Ontario following his assignment on January 7, and recorded two assists and 68 penalty minutes in 19 contests with the Condors. He registered an assist in back-to-back contests on March 20 vs. Victoria and March 26 at Utah. His assist on March 20 was his first professional assist.
Prior to turning professional, the 6-5, 220-pounder skated in 247 games with the Spokane Chiefs, Chilliwack Bruins, Brandon Wheat Kings and Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League (WHL), registering 15 goals and 48 assists for 63 points, along with 625 penalty minutes.
McCue established career-highs in goals (six), assists (19), points (25) and penalty minutes (195) in 2008-09 with Brandon and Medicine Hat. He also recorded two goals and two assists for four points, along with 38 penalty minutes in 20 career WHL playoff contests with Chilliwack, Brandon and Medicine Hat.
The Defensive Dormitory in training camp is going to need about 40 rooms.
Props to Chris in the UK for emailing me about this.

I knew things would loosen up as soon as Kovi signed.

Speaking of loosening up, this may just be a move to improve relations with the Anaheim GM. Sather made two fairly innocuous trades with him, Eminger and this guy, maybe he’s trying to lay the groundwork for a Ryan deal.

I would type you a longer reply, but I am currently setting up my position in the “Canyon of Heroes” for the Cup parade.

Has the whole world into a war between Sather and Burke over every stiff whose fists vastly exceed his skates? Doesn’t Sather realize goons with no skills have no place in a skating NHL?

You clearly haven’t noticed what the Edmonton Chiefs have been doing this offseason.

We’ve been saying that for every defensive signing since Michel Petit

According to Hockey's Future:
Zaborsky has the ability to become a second line winger in the NHL. He will need to continue to develop consistent play as well as physicality to achieve this goal.
Luckily we don’t need any potential wingers. We can ship them all out for pucks and fists.
Zaborsky
is probably going to Europe, so this was a something for nothing deal

I wish I could see Sather’s “roadmap”, because as it is I have no idea what direction he’s trying to go with all these recent deals. The only change we need on D is resigning stall and making redden go away, other then that if we’re shoring up anything it should be our huge lack of people who can put pucks in the god damn net.

Don’t know if you guys brought this up but Kovi’s deal only 102million? anyone else heard that??
Since the face been revealed the game got real
Capgeek has that up, yes. $6m is a sweet deal, even if it is a ridiculous length.

No deal or signing is official until league says so. NHL has 5 days to review Kovalchuk signing.

ding +1, not sure bettman would have the balls to call it out tho, hossas deal went thru no problem altho his is at least believable in length to age ratio i think (dont know exactly)
and here’s the official info/ breakdown, key thing to note is he is unmovable until he is 34 and at 35 becomes untradeable. A specific one year gap to allow them out of the contract unless he maintains his skills then they have a year to decide to trade him or not. How can they approve this? :
2010-11: $6 million
2011-12: $6 million
2012-13: $11.5 million
2013-14: $11.5 million
2014-15: $11.5 million
2015-16: $11.5 million
2016-17: $11.5 million
2017-18: $10.5 million
2018-19: $8.5 million
2019-20: $6.5 million
2020-21: $3.5 Million
2021-22: $750,000
2022-23: $550,000
2023-24: $550,000
2024-25: $550,000
2025-26: $550,000
2026-27: $550,000
The contract represents a $6 million annual cap hit for the Devils.
There is a no movement clause through the 2016-17 season and a no trade clause 2018-19 through the deal’s completion. Kovalchuk can be traded between July 1, 2017, and June 30, 2018.
See you could in theory buy out the last 4 or 5 years and wouldn’t even know the difference.
Since the face been revealed the game got real
And as leetch has said a few times, they won’t need to buy it out because there’s a high percentage chance Kovy will have retired by the time that’s necessary.

exactly. he will take his 95 mil and retire. he could be greedy and come back to make it 98.5, lol.
by Michael Gleich on Jul 19, 2010 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions
to end this once and for all there is this
the cap hit to buy out those cheap years is 5.44 mil 2021, 5.64 the other 5 years. then you get to pay 194K for 6 more years. tell me why you do that to save pennies?
by Michael Gleich on Jul 19, 2010 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions
My only point this whole time is they could buy him out if they wanted, Isn’t the cap hit lke 200k you wouldn’t even realize it. Never said they were going to buy him out just that you could and it wouldn’t make a difference. I think he might finish up in Russia if that league is still afloat. They would prob. pay him good money even close to 40.
Since the face been revealed the game got real
I might be misinformed here. I was told the buy out process is 2/3 money owed over twice the years
.2022-23: $550,000
2023-24: $550,000
2024-25: $550,000
2025-26: $550,000
2026-27: $550,000
so 2.75 mill but 2/3rds of this so 1.833million over 10 years so
183k cap hit over 10 years?
Am I incorrect with this process?
Since the face been revealed the game got real
no you are incorrect. just look at the actual buyout calculator i liked. that is what they owe the player but not what counts against the cap. the cap hit formula is here: http://www.nhlscap.com/cap_faq.htm#buyouts
by Michael Gleich on Jul 20, 2010 12:26 AM EDT up reply actions
in simple terms it becomes (avg cap hit-buyout savings)
by Michael Gleich on Jul 20, 2010 12:30 AM EDT up reply actions
O thanks
O thats crazyness on NHL live they were talking about buying out a player and used the process I used. But I see what your saying. But lets say he did retire in 22-23, could he come back the following year and play for anyone if he wanted or could he only play for the devils until 26-27? Cause we both know Kovi is not playing for 550k so what if he wanted to get back in the league do you know how that works??
Since the face been revealed the game got real
Yeah thats the part I didn’t understand. I thought money owed each year was the cap hit during the buyout process. Thats why I thought you were wrong and it didn’t make sense that you were fighting me so hard on this . I should of known you usually know what the hell you are talking about. LOL
Since the face been revealed the game got real
no, the devs would still hold his contract rights if he retired and came back.
by Michael Gleich on Jul 20, 2010 9:49 AM EDT up reply actions
There will never be a buyout! Period!
If Kovy can still play when his actual salary drops to 500K, he will retire and play in the KHL. Period. Under no circumstance will they need to buy him out. The NMC drops off, the NTC kicks in, they can demote him to the minors to rid the team of the cap hit, Kovy retires and leaves. End of story
UUUUUHHHHHH!!!

Kovalchuk's contract should be denied by the NHL.
If the NHL thinks that he is going to play after 39 or 40 they are crazy. Of course Lou has the NHL in his back pocket, so chances on it will go through.
