Blueshirts By The Numbers: Number 2-Brian Leetch

Continuing with our "Blueshirts By The Numbers" section, we get to number 2 which obviously goes to Brian Leetch.

Leetch was drafted 9th overall in the 1986 NHL entry draft. He would play his first game for the New York Rangers just one year after that, posting 2 goals and 12 assists in the 17 games that he dressed in. Four years later Leetch would notch 22 goals and 80 assists for 102 points, a single season points record for a Rangers defenseman.

In 1994 Leetch would be one of the key cogs leading the New York Rangers to their first Stanley Cup in 54 years. That season he posted 23 goals and 56 assists for 79 points in his 84 games. In the playoffs he posted an insane 11 goals and 23 assists for 34 points in 23 playoff games, a performance which earned him the Conn Smythe Trophy for MVP of the playoffs. Brian was the first and still the only American born player to win the trophy.

Star-divide

Leetch has won so many awards with the New York Rangers, I'll just list them here in order of when he got them:

  • 1989: Leetch was awarded the Calder Trophy for rookie of the year. (He had 23 goals and 48 assists for 71 points in only 63 games that year.)
  • 1992: First American defenseman to put up 100 points in a season. (Only 5th defenseman all-time)
  • 1992: Norris Trophy: NHL's best defenseman.
  • 1994: Conn Smythe Trophy as most valuable player of the playoffs. (He was the first American to ever win the award.)
  • 1994: Stanley Cup Champion.
  • 1997 Leetch was awarded his second Norris Trophy.
  • 2002 Silver medalist with the U.S.A Olympic Squad
  • Brian Leetch was a 10-time All-Star
  • As a defenseman he had five 20+ goal seasons.
  • 1,000 Points as an NHL defenseman, the only American defenseman to ever do so.
  • Served as Captain of the Rangers after Mark Messier's departure.

Many consider Leetch to be the greatest American to ever play the game, and even more consider him to be the greatest Ranger to ever grace the ice. Unfortunately, he was not permitted to finish his career as a Ranger, due to Glen Sather trading him to Toronto on Leetch's 36th birthday.

On January 24th, 2008 Leetch's number was raised to the Garden rafters. In 2009 Brian Leetch would be placed where he belonged, in the NHL Hockey Hall Of Fame.

Aside from being my all-time favorite Ranger, he was the classiest player to ever play the game. Here is a video clip of probably the greatest goal I have ever seen, scored by Mr. Leetch:

Great player. I have a ’94 Finals programme signed by leetch and Zubov. Its one of my favourite posessions.

I hate ignorant people who have said that Leetch wasnt great defensively. He was exceptional in everything he did. Just because he didnt lay out 10 people/game doesnt mean he wasnt great defensively.

Agreed

He was great defensively. He was also great at pinching and keeping the puck in, so he rarely gave up an odd man rush when trying to do so.

The summer after he was traded to Toronto I was playing a tournament up in Montreal and I was on the bus with a bunch of guys from Toronto. We got to talking and all they could talk about was how they couldn’t believe how great Leetch was defensively, because everyone outside of NY always had this false impression that he wasn’t. He didn’t have to make spectacular defensive plays all the time because he never got himself into positions where it was necessary.

He was the greatest Ranger we’ve ever had, and my favorite all time player.

by far the greatest Ranger EVER!!

The way he could just take over a game all by himself and control the flow was really one of a kind. I know there have been other great offensive defensemen in history but none quite like #2. And im sorry Joe but i have to disagree w/ u………..one of the greatest goals I saw Leetchie score was that same playoff year against the Devils. That spin-o-rama goal on the goal line where he just tucked it in between Marty’s legs……….that blew my F-ING mind!!! The man was an absolute magician on the ice!! Ahhh……..great memories man, great memories…………………

by giantsNYrangers on Jul 20, 2010 7:22 AM EDT reply actions

And he was a master at keeping the puck in the offensive zone as well............

When the other team tried to clear the zone either around the boards or up the middle……..

by giantsNYrangers on Jul 20, 2010 7:23 AM EDT reply actions

Dont think I have ever seen anyone do a better job at that then Leetchie…problem is I got used to it and now get so pissed when our dmen cant keep it in.

First personalized jersey I ever got was Leetch. Every time the Rangers are slumping I break it out to watch a game.

I have my real deal Leetch jersey as well...........got it at Cosby's.......

And when he was traded to the Leafs……….went on nhl.com and ordered a real deal #2 Leetch Maple Leaf jersey as well for around $300………….yeah that one worked out well…………

So this is a no on Laidlaw? Shucks.

It’s impossible to say anything bad about Leetch. Other than his ability to exit cabs properly, there was no better player to wear the sweater in my lifetime, and that’s from someone who has been a Messier fan for life.

Ha ha, “exit cabs properly”

Only the Rangers would have a hockey player break his ankle by slipping on ice

leetch was a class act one of the greatest d men to play the game not only could he score and control the game but hes defense was hes concern as well which he played as good as any. unlike many offensive dmen they dont worry about the d as much but leetch took pride at both ends

by nytrueblue on Jul 20, 2010 8:52 AM EDT reply actions

20-30 years from now we’ll still be talking about the ‘94 core, and no it won’t get old, even if we do somehow end up winning another Cup by then. Obviously as most players do before they retire, Leetch’s skills & health dropped off a lil bit, but he was still magic. In a pipedream maybe MDZ and Mcilrath with be the next incarnation of a Leetch + Beuke pairsome. A HUGE if I know but one can dream.

Exactly, for a franchise that has had precious few legitimate HOF caliber players come from within it will take a legendary player to usurp Leetch from the dizzying heights he reached amongst the Rangers faithful in his playing days as well as his legacy.

What can you even say

he was simply the best.

And I don’t think he can ever be replaced. There will be other greats, but never another Leetch

That Game 7 goal is etched in my memory like few others. I remember Leetch getting that puck, and it was like time stood still waiting for him to shoot. What a night.

The wait was excrutiating

Were you like me and thought he was going to miss the net?

No, I never worried he would miss, but it just seemed like hours waiting for him to shoot.

no love for brad park?

he was essentially leetch before we had leetch, and if not for bobby orr would’ve been THE defenseman of the 70s

other notable rangers to wear #2: babe siebert, art coulter, bob plager, doug harvey, wayne hillman, and of course tommy laidlaw

This from a man who thinks the plural of goose is sheep.

Jim is doing a special promo on Park

later today because he was too good not to mention. But Leetch takes the cake on number 2

I love leetch too but..

you really should have included honorable mentions. i grew up with brad park and he was simply an amazing player. Lets not forget the ones who paved the way in blue!

for you to say leetch was easily beat to the out side your nuts he might not of been the strongest d man but leetch knew how to use position and his stick and yes playing with the other teams top lines game after game you will get beat here and there i dont recall to many games we lost by leetch getting beat

by nytrueblue on Jul 20, 2010 12:33 PM EDT reply actions

I thought his defense was underrated. Particularly so in the post 1997 years when he was playing on the top defensive line. He played against the other team’s top line every night (even after Beukaboom left). This, I’m sure, took away from his offense. I don’t understand those who think he was suspect on defense.

One thing about that clip is the way the entire line worked together…that goal doesn’t happen without the messier drop pass and Graves doing his blue collar work in the slot.

I grew up idolizing Brian Leetch

Always wore number 2 and I even had a half shield/cage because he wore a shield…haha
