Blake Wheeler anyone?

I don't know if anyone discussed this before I joined Banter, but would anyone be interested in seeing Blake Wheeler come to NYR? I feel like the forward lines in Boston are a tad overstacked, especially if you assume Tyler Seguin makes the opening roster and Blake might be available. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe their lines current will look something like this (assuming Savard is not traded and Ryder is not dumped/traded):

Lucic-Savard-Horton

Sturm-Bergeron-Ryder

Paille-Krejci-Recchi ( Mark was still great in the playoffs for them, can't see him playing 4th line)

Begin-Campbell / Seguin-Wheeler

The 6'-5" 205 lb 23 yr old Wheeler put up 18 goals and 38 pts last season and 21 goals and 45 pts 2 years ago, does Boston really expect this kid to be happy playing on the 4th line for another year? I just feel like Boston has a bit of a logjam of quality forwards and perhaps we could snatch him for the right trade value (maybe a pick and minor leaguer?) if they have to shed some salary, especially since he filed for arbitration and might walk if Boston doesn't approve of the arbitration price (capgeek.com says he's worth $2.8 mil as a RFA). Assuming of course Sather resigns Staal as priority #1 right now, I still think we can use more secondary scoring and size, and I think Wheeler could be a great addition (can play RW or LW) to any line we have now. Even though he kinda took his spot, I realize Recchi will probably retire after this season if his production finally drops off, so maybe Wheeler will end up sticking around anyway, just thought it'd be a legit possibility to grab him for the right value. What do you guys think? Am I totally off or maybe onto something?

+1

you could probably make that statement about anyone on the roster not named Staal,Gaborik or Hank

Hank deserves better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We've got alot of guys hovering around 20 goals

that being said, I think Wheeler has more upside then most of them. Still, I’d rather see us acquire a legit 30+ goal threat.

by BuckarooClub on Jul 24, 2010 11:06 AM EDT reply actions

You can never have enough 20 goal guys. As it is, we only have 4, Gaborik (who obv is higher than 20), Prospal, Callahan, and Dubinsky.

It’d be nice if AA-MZA could get to that number, or if Drury could get back to it, but they’re no guarantees.

As for the 30+ guys…there are only two “available,” but neither is actually so.

Don't get me wrong

I’d take him over Cally in a heartbeat. He’s got more size and upside. However, our “youth movement” is looking to feed us a fresh batch of 20 or less goal guys, so I don’t think this is someone worth chasing.

by BuckarooClub on Jul 24, 2010 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions

he's a big dude too

size is something the Rangers forwards have lacked…since seemingly forever.

but he plays like he’s 5’9 110 pounds.

He had 70 hits last year in 82 games, playing a “checking line” role, and in the 5 or 6 Boston games I caught, he seemed really easy to knock off the puck and rather invisible.

Just to remind you guys keeping track at home. Kotalik had 83 hits in 45 games, and WADE REDDEN even had 88 in 75.

by SeanI on Jul 25, 2010 2:40 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm not worried about who he hits...

I’m worried about him using his size to screen the goalie and get putbacks. He’s not really a “checking line” guy anyway.

Yes, but they had no defense and young/old goalies.

not happening

Cam Neely loves this kid and isnt going to move him. Ryder might get waived and placed in the minors. We all need to start realizing what we have right now is more than likely what we are going to have for this upcoming season.

shows how ridiculously stacked the bruins are

by Ahmad Bradshaw on Jul 24, 2010 1:18 PM EDT reply actions

He’s sooner to be put in the minors, than to be traded to the Rangers (of all teams).

well then i guess for the sake of this conversation he is an RFA so a trade is not necessary.

by Michael Gleich on Jul 25, 2010 1:04 AM EDT up reply actions

im assuming the qualifying offer would be a first and third? or am i over estimating our offer to him. Also, if we decide to trade instead of losing the draft picks what do u think we’d have yo give up

by lund123 on Jul 25, 2010 4:26 AM EDT up reply actions

as bradshaw points out below he is going to arb so either he signs a deal before the hearing, the bruins accept the ruling or the bruins decline and he becomes a ufa like the Z situation for us last year.

by Michael Gleich on Jul 25, 2010 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

It would be a second round pick.

I do believe the Rangers were interested in Wheeler when he refused his max entry contract from the Coyotes and became in essence a FA. I am unsure of his current contract limitations but i do feel that whatever it would take to get him from Boston would be not worth the price he would command.

by Sullivan09 on Jul 25, 2010 4:45 AM EDT reply actions

hes a ufa if they reject his arb reward.
also we cant offer sheet him anyway since arbitration

Why is this on the front page?

by KingHenrik on Jul 25, 2010 12:22 PM EDT reply actions

Bruins

they are alot better than us on paper
look at those lines
with a good set of defensemen and a young up and coming goalie in Rask
wow I havent looked at Bostons roster lately
that team is sick

Sather needs to just retire

Dump Avery in Hartfort for Wheeler?

Not sure if we want to take another 2.8 mil out without dumping something off. Blake still has potential to be waived without a cap hit correct? If we send Avery’s Salary to the AHL and grab Wheeler for a similar cost, almost a million more though, then we added another potential 20 goal scorer in place of a 10 goal scorer for not much more of a hit.

by Pballer505 on Jul 26, 2010 12:27 AM EDT reply actions

Secondary Scoring??

Last I looked the Rangers were well stocked in secondary scorers. Primary guys are the issue that needs addressing. If we think Wheeler will develop into a top 6 forward, awesome… go for it. However if he is just another 20 goal, 50 point guy. Bleh

by StayTheCourse on Jul 26, 2010 7:07 AM EDT reply actions

Secondary Scoring for cheap is needed

We only had 4 guys that got to 20 goals this season if we can get more guys that can hit that mark for cheap it will only be an improvement. Drury showed that he has the potential to get to 15 goals (wow). Then there is Avery, AA,Christensen, Del Zotto, and Staal who hovered around the 10 goal mark. Only two of those players at the 10 goal mark could say they put up respectable scoring numbers and they are the defense, and Lisin is a fast kid but had an awful season no idea where he is going to end up this year. If we could lose some of the higher payed 10 goal trim for some cheap 20 goal guys it will be a great improvement.

by Pballer505 on Jul 26, 2010 8:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Anisimov’s 22 years old, he’s not a 10 goal player. He put up 12 as a rookie with almost no time. As he sees a bigger role, he’ll be a 20 goal guy himself, I believe.

Agree that we need more scoring…I don’t know how one can say we had enough secondary scoring when the biggest issue last year was just that. Sure, it’d be nice to add a 75-80 point guy, but there’s only a handful in the league.

20-30-50 is a solid player in this NHL, and shouldn’t be dismissed.

That is a solid NHL player how many people on our team hit 50pts this year?

damn blockquote whatever you get what I mean lol

by CrazyRangerFan on Jul 26, 2010 9:06 AM EDT up reply actions

2 on our team. (3 if you count points per game)
102 in the NHL (132 if you count points per game, min: 25 games played)

exactly, theres not many of them. I wouldnt want blake but to say he is “just another 50pt guy bleh” is just being ignorant because we could certainly use another 50pt player.

Rather see Weise and Byers play, both big and like the front of the net. It will be tough for Weise with Gabby, Cally, MZA and Prust on the RW. With Boogard getting signed and Avery still here will be tough for Byers as well.
