Rangers News: Frolov About to Sign with NYR?
Laurie Carr of Beyond the Blueshirts reports via Twitter that the New York Rangers are about to sign Russian winger Alexander Frolov to a one-year deal. This is according to Frolov's agent, who told Russian reporters that Frolov has elected to go with the Rangers since he was aggravated with the Los Angeles Kings, his former club, for delaying talks with him until the Ilya Kovalchuk frenzy came to a close.
There has yet to be any "official" confirmation on this, but I would assume that will come shortly. This post will be updated once that information becomes available.

I was one of the “Say No to Frolov” Crowd, but I can deal with a 1-year deal. I guess this seals the Redden in Hartford move…?
+1
Don’t like him and I am sure he will fustratethe HELL out of me, but or 1 year why not. Welcome to the party pal.

Sather has been quoted saying Staal will be signed. Even if he gets offer sheeted Sather will match him. Stall will be a Ranger.
do you trust what sather says?

mcdonagh for one now that redden is gone.
our blue line consists of staal girardi mdz gilroy and mcd.. how much younger do u want to get?
and font forget that frolov is also young. by signing him and dumping redden we are getting much younger

Not to mention rookie forwards don't usually play an 82 game schedule.
Expect Boyle and Boogaard to be scratched in place of MZA and Grachev on many instances.
frolov for one year is an awesome move. cant believe they got him for one year. i feel a lot better this year now.
one of many big differences, and likely the most important, is that frolov is not on a long term deal

Kotalik topped out at 25 goals once. Frolov scored 30 twice. Plus frolov is coming with a big chip on his shoulder, looking for a better deal.

I think he has tons of skill there is no question about that. He can be fustrating to watch but I like the one year deal. He feels the Kings didn’t let him showcase his talents in a contract year. So best case we will get a pissed off motivated Frolov who will burn the bulb out of the lamp at the garden. Then if all this happens then we can all argue what he is worth and for how long. Is this Sather 2.0 using logic when signing free agents??

No, it’s Mr. Hyde Sather. He’s appeared often this month, thankfully.

Projected lines (or at least what i think they should be):
Prospal-Christiansen-Gabby
Frolov-Dubinsky-Drury
Avery-Anisimov-Cally
Prust-Boyle-Weiss-Boogy all rotating
wouldnt mind if drury and cally switched, but i say give dru a chance on a scoring line.
Now we are in an ideal situation with two scoring lines, and a third line checking line that should have a great forecheck and play good D.
D:
Staal-Girardi
Rozy-MDZ
Gilroy-Eminger
Mcdonagh at midseason if not earlier (possibly even opening night)
i wouldnt be surprised to see grachev up on opening night, no idea who’d he replace tho. Although perhaps with Frolov on the team Grachev and Stepan may be kept together in the minors and come up thru the season some time.
Grachev will not make opening night . . .
but we will definitely see him over the course of the season.
Zuccarello-Aasen has a better shot at opening night. Even though he’s not played in the NHL, he played against NHLers in the Olympics, and has more professional experience. Given what Anders Hedberg has had to say – "We did not recruit him because he will play on our fourth line or on our farm team, but we expect him to fit in in one of our top five." – I think the brass hopes he can make the jump.
With Torts at the helm we’ll see a number of line combinations, which doesn’t bother me too much as long as players understand their responsibilities; your lines are a reasonable expectation. Here is another:
Frolov – Christensen – Gaborik
Prospal – Anisimov – Zuccarello-Aasen
Dubinsky – Drury – Callahan
Prust – Avery – Boogard/Boyle/Weise?
If we move one of our centers to the wing, I move Dubinsky, Drury leads our team in faceoff percentage and I like Dubi on the wing in hopes he can put up more numbers. Avery centering has been talked about and I, for one, would like to see it. He and Prust could do some damage on a 4th line that is in regular rotation; we don’t need to play Boogard every night, and Boyle and Weise can compete for that last spot.
We’ll see Grachev and other prospects when there are injuries.
by Anders Griffen on Jul 27, 2010 8:15 AM EDT up reply actions
Dubi’s not going to put up numbers playing 3rd line with Drury, I’d almost guarantee that. That line would start in the defensive zone all the time, and you can’t put up numbers when 3 out of every 5 shifts you start in your own end.

I know you're right, Smurf . . .
Even as I wrote it I was thinking, about all three of those guys, how can they improve their numbers while continuing to be relied on (Drury and Cally) in defensive roles — though Callahan managed OK.
Again, it’s just one version that we could very well see as Tortorella moves guys around.
by Anders Griffen on Jul 27, 2010 8:42 AM EDT up reply actions
Cally managed to maintain only because of 20 PP points. He got murdered at even strength.
The addition of Frolov will hurt both player’s PP production, as you have assume the #1PP unit will be Frolov-Prospal-Gaborik. So Dubi/Cally will be relegated to 30 seconds on the 2nd unit w/o a PP QB most nights.
IMO, that means that fans shouldn’t be shocked if Cally drops to 30-35 points. If they drop Dubi to that line, one might have to expect the same.

Thanks for the clarification, Smurf ...
…and a welcome heads-up so we’re not thinking “what the hell happened to Callahan?!” when halfway through the season we see his lower point production.
There is the tendency to talk about lines as if they are constant. I think everybody knows this will not be the case. I think we can count on seeing Dubi put time in on the first and second lines; I won’t be surprised to see him with Drury and Cally on the third either.

Just what we need
an unmotivated russian born player who will bolt as soon as things get tough.
I just can’t see how a lazy player is going to work with Tortorella.
If you read the Kings
SB forums regarding Frolov, they adressed the fact that his statistics have gone down in the past few years, but they say that he improved his two way game substantionally, shown by his +/- rating improving, with the exception of of the 07-08 season.
Additionally, not only are we adding another offensive threat, but another nail in the coffin of Redden’s career as a Ranger. If this deal goes through the Rangers are a better team then they were yesterday, IMO.
How do you figure that he is an "unmotivated Russian"
can you go into detail please?

because he’s calling all russians unmotivated
frolov is a dynamic player who always works hard. he’s streaky, and he seemed to get on the wrong side of the coaching staff recently in LA, but in the previous regime he flourished.
Yeah
and he worked on his 2 way game, played much less power play time, and still scored 20 goals. He can be a gamebreaker at time, but regardless he is a potential 30 goal scorer.
I’m kinda sick of this “lazy Russian” thing.

i actually do recall frolov being viewed as not the hardest worker by some in LA, if i recall correctly (not 100% sure) he may have even been a healthy scratch one game. Of course I do not know one way or the other whether he has drury and callys work ethic or zherdev’s, but I do believe there were whispers about it last year

so who remembers that “Gabby to Kings” thing? Who wants to bet that was sather talking to a kings player, rather then talking to the kings? lmao, if this is true of course.
According to TSN
Russian newspaper SovSports is reporting that unrestricted free agent Alexander Frolov is on the verge of signing with the New York Rangers; however TSN has learned that while the two-sides are in discussion, no deal has been finalized.
The report has a quote from Frolov’s agent, Sergei Isakov stating that Frolov is about to sign a one-year contract with the Rangers, similar to the deal that Maxim Afinogenov (another one of Isakov’s clients) had with the Atlanta Thrashers last season. Afinogenov had a career season in Atlanta after he signed a one-year deal with the Thrashers worth $800,000. He has yet to reap the rewards as he remains unsigned.
Maybe Redden isn’t gone quite yet…
Frolov for $800k would be serious highway robbery. Even if he declines at the same rate he has, that’s still another 43 points injected in the lineup, for $1/2 Boogs.
I was never on board for Frolov because of his ridiculous demands..however, one year at anything less than $3 Boogs is a win for the 2010-11 team.

Whoa!
If you read the interview with Frolov’s agent that TSN is citing (which I translated and Nick linked to — thanks for that, didn’t have time to get here and post something myself before leaving work!) Isakov clearly says Frolov’s situation is similar to Afinogenov’s, not that the deal will be similar.
“But in general this situation is similar to that which happened to Maxim Afinogenov last year, when he signed a contract with Atlanta.”
What TSN wrote about the deal being similar is extremely misleading.
I thought you had forgotten about us!

Frolov’s agent claims his production was hampered by Kings management, but he’s also not going to have an 18% shooting percentage like he did in his better seasons. That being said, 14-15% is within the realm of possibility, and the added intrigue is he will have elevated importance in our offense compared to what he was dealing with in LA.

Both of his 18+ seasons correspond with a huge uptick in PP goals. Without going through the breakdowns, I’d venture to guess it’s possible he could shoot 18% again with heavy PP minutes.

dangerous?
in that we’ll compete for the 8th seed again, then yes, dangerous. but, otherwise, not so much. but, i still like a one year deal, as this team needed scoring desparately. noone on the current roster, except gaborik, was going to do it. frolov instantly, when/if the deal is finalized, becomes the second scoring option for the rangers.

Love the signing only because its one year.
For me this cements Redden in hartford, Grachev Stephan in hartford. The later I dont really like but whatever. Also this is surely looking to be Prospal v2.
2 to 3 million is the right range when comparing him side-by-side to Afinogenov – and he’s a significantly better 2-way player.
I’m not going to get attached to him though – ‘cause if he does light the lamp, next year he’s going to want 5+mm per on a minimum 4 year deal with an NTC – and that’s a tune I hope Sather doesn’t sing.
I think this makes the rangers a better team. I wouldn’t necessarily say a cup contender, but definitely competitive. Just think how many 1 goal games they lost last season because they couldn’t score more the 1 or 2 goals a night. With Hank in net n Redden in Hartford, they will compete. And the lower the price the better the deal becomes.
And not that Sather ever sells at the trade deadline, but if the Rangers r outta it n he is having a good year, he could fetch a nice return in a trade
by BxBigDrew on Jul 26, 2010 9:21 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
In principle, I (and lots of others here) would agree.
Except that Sather never seems to be a seller at the deadline. Ever. This past year would have been a prime opportunity to sell – and they didn’t…..
One can always hope, I guess. But I’m not big on the whole “Hope” thing.
@dbmaven
you gotta be big on the “hope thing” to be a rangers fan, don’t you?

Did it occur to any of you...
That he might just be looking for another year of living in states before returning home? Not everybody is about trying to land a biggger contract, he just may want the life experience of living and playing in the big apple before he heads home to finish up his career.
I wish we could get richards too
I would gave up staal for him. That would be a serious first line.
Trade a young top defensive D-man who should be signed here long-term for a 1 year rental on a high-mileage center with a huge cap-hit who will probably leave at the end of the season. Going to go stab myself now.
Well that was just me...
Sorry, I don’t value some players as highly as you guys do.

Since the face been revealed the game got real
Where does he play if we get him?
Not that there’s a right or wrong answer here, but just thought I’d give us something to talk about. Frolov is a LW. Possible scenerios …
1. Put him on the first line. Drop christansen = frolov/prospal/gabby
2. Put him on the second line. Move dubi back to the middle (?) but leave the chemistry on the first line. Frolov/dubi/??? (mza, cally, Avery)
3. Drop Prospal, move dubi up. Dubi/EC/Gabby and Frolov/prospal/???
4. What combo and I not thinking of?
I think I like option 3 the best. Dubi/ec/ gabby seemed to work well together and generate some pressure, and prospal gives us some depth in the middle and hopefully rubs of on frolov like he did on Gabby. I have no problem with Dubi in the middle (#2), but it would definatlyake me question our player mgmt. They were so intent he couldn’t be a center a season ago, but now he can? #1 would be great line on paper, but would leave us exposed behind them. We need to be to lines deep to contend.
It's Torts, so depends on where the roulette wheel stops
But I agree..I’d go with #3.
Let Dubi-EC-Gabby do the heavy lifting against the other team’s top lines
Let Frolov-Prospal-Cally (or MZA if he’s here) take the easier competition to dominate.
Let Avery-Anisimov-Cally/MZA/Weise/Prust handle the 3rd line duties
Let Booger-Drury-Weise/Prust take care of the rest.
In the event EC can’t duplicate the magic, shift him down to 3, Prospal up to 1, AA up to 2.

Dubi/EC/Gabby (I like having Dubi’s grit on the 1st unit-with Frolov it would be a completely perimeter unit)
Frolov/AA/Cally or MZA (I’d hope MZA would be up to it, but having Cally here gives the line a definitive defensive presence instead of a rookie playing 2nd line competition)
Avery/Dru/MZA (I think this would be good because it lets Dru be the defensive lynchpin of the line, letting Avery be a pest and MZA can think offense and not have to play against top D-pairings)
Booger/Is Boyle coming back or any of the AHL kids ready to C the 4th line?/Prust
all of the above
i think we will see all the lines listed here
Torts is going to try things
i’m definitely expecting them to want to get Anisimov some 2nd line time
i don’t mind the lines moving around
i think the players understanding their roles is what is important
chemistry comes after everybody knows what they’re doing under a coach’s system

that Frolov’s agent says a deal is close just to drum up interest?
Just a thought.
If it is for 1-2 boogaards, Redden is done for sure.
Pavol Demitra thought he was going to NY until things didn’t work out., so its not official until its official
Frolov on the 1st line makes much more sense. Put Duby back to Center between Gabby and Frolov and, all of a sudden, we’ve got a legit first line, something we haven’t had since the Jagr days. These guys could put up some serious numbers. Plus, we could call them the BAM line (Brandon, Alex, Marian).
Torts is on record saying he believes Dubi is better on the wing. But none of it really matters, Torts is going to the shuffle the line combos within and between games.
the front office in me
Plus the more points Dubi puts up the more you have to pay him. Ec is signed for 2 years.

chemistry with aves?
in a lot of his highlight goals he was on the ice with Avery, and if i did the right math, it would seem that this was during a pretty good season for frolov,
I was thinking that
I didn’t realize they had some much success together in LA, but I that would be awesome if it carried over here. I think Avery has the skill to hang with top 6 players, and his ability as a pest is best used against more skilled opponents. When Avery is most effective, it’s not when he STARTS talking, it’s when he DOESN’T STOP talking. It’s easy for guys to take the high road for a few shifts, but you’re getting late into the 2nd period, and he’s still going, that’s when he can really snap them. Unfortunatly, with Torts revolving lines, he hasn’t had as many opportunities to work his magic. If he could mesh with Frolov, that would keep him on the ice, and we could have a great second line.
by BuckarooClub on Jul 27, 2010 8:54 AM EDT up reply actions
I would love for Frolov, should he sign, get a long look on Anisimov’s wing. I think having a skilled older Russian on his wing could only help Anisimov progress.
Redden gone???????
I know everyone is waiting for Redden to be exiled from NYR to hartford…….I would not hold my breath on this one. Now that NYR’s can no longer bury their debt under cablevision. I seriously doubt Dolan is willing to swallow 23 million over the next 4 years. From a fan aspect……this looks awesome, from the business side……..I just cannot see it happening.
if frolov signs, with the cap situation the way it is, redden is either being traded or being sent down, and there is no team in hell that would take redden or his contract… If frolov signs and staal signs a contract around the 4 mil mark… redden is gone, i think a vast majority of this hinges upon mcdonagh, if he’s ready to go, redden is odd man out because of the salary..
i feel bad for redden

i think a lot of people would like to see dubi back in the middle, but torts has made it fairly clear that he prefers him on the wing where he has less resposibility and can focus more on his offense. I dont think MZA will be ready to step in and handle first line minutes/competitiion right away and he could provide some valuable playmaking ability on the 2nd or 3rd lines. Finally, i dont understand the urge to mess with our 1st line from last yr, dubi put up a career high in goals, gabby tied his career high in goals and put up more points than ever before, and EC showed a lot of promise- leave it alone.

if this signing does happen…there seems to be a lot of players for so many spots…i actually hope this means the rangers roll 4 lines (i know torts is a guy who rides his top lines) but if you look at it our 4th line could possibly another 3rd line…filled with hitting, grinding, and some scoring…im all for this signing but because we have quite a bit of players fighting for spots, i wouldn’t be surprised if there was a trade in the works…If you look at these lines people are putting up boyle seems to be in and out and byers and weise seem to be non-existent….i would love to trade boyle for a 3rd round pick but i’d live with a 4th, 5th, or 6th…he seemed to be a pk specialist and i think we have people who can take care of that…i still dont think sather is done making minor changes
you may be absolutely correct that sather isnt done. As for boyle getting a 3rd- not going to happen, he has little value after last season. rolling 4 lines would be nice, and we did towards the end of last season when shelley was burnin up the stat sheet, but you have to remeber that boogard is going to be there (at least at the beginning of the year) pulling everyone else down

some good points there..
gabby frolov dubi cally prospal anisimov mza christensen avery and drury are all top 9 players..
if move drury down to the 4th line and keep boyle as a healthy scratch..
and on d ur 6 are.. staal girardi rozi mdz mcd and eminger..
id be fine with him keeping this team and bringing in another depth dman.. and than i think were set
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
Gotta love that youth movement!!

eminger is your depth d man when you put gilroy in there
by BronxBeliever on Jul 27, 2010 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions
Shitty thing is it might be Redden in there, and we are trading Rozi away. I think we definitely need another DMan if that happens or we are going to have some really weak pairings.

Looks like it's done
1 year, “over $3m.”

as long as its one yr i dont care how much it is (as long as we can still sign staal). it might even be better as it will guarentee a ticket to harford for redden. this was a russian source though so we cant be sure that the # is right

Gross and others are reporting it done..haven’t seen terms yet.

Frolov signs 1 year at 3 million
Turned down 4 year 20 million in KHL.
Less than 2 Boogs is a solid deal.

For sure.
This is a can’t lose situation.
Frolov for 1 year; Redden in Hartford.
My day just got better.
+1
They’re overpaying if it’s $3 mill for 1 yr, but yes, if we’re done watching Redden play like a malfunctioning robot than we’re all good.
$3m is an overpay for likely ~50pts production minimum?

I would say greater than 50 pts easy.
He’s gonna see some first line minutes with heavy PP time.
It’s what I use for “approximately”

Got it. I was under the impression that his numbers had been declining but after a 2nd look at his stats, not too bad at all.
Declining yes…but still in the 50 area as of last year.

1 year contract = dude's gonna try and increase his numbers trying to get a big payday.
Hopefully he does just that.
Frolov to me seems like he’s a better Zherdev. Tho of course, that probably means he’ll be a healthy scratch a lot and in Torts doghouse soon enough.
But I love the years. Very Anti-Sather.
That brings me to think! Every good Sather move must be offset by a stupid one! So..what’s next!

I would be highly suprised if he is a healthy scratch even once.
He’s got a fire under his ass and I bet he’ll see alot of first line minutes.
Heh…I asked one of my friends in the area who is a big Kings fan about him:
“He can easily score 30 goals any year, especially if you put him on a line with Gaborik, and you bench him every 20 games or so to get him angry and motivated.”

All right, is it time to start talking about lines?
What about giving Frolov 2nd line duties rather than pairing him with Gaborik?
I would love to see a solid first line.
We havent had one for a long time.
1st line on opening night should be:
Frolov – Christensen – Gaborik
False
we had a pretty solid first line last yr. gabby up career #’s and dubi career best goals while EC looked very solid. dont mess with that. our problem last year was secondary scoring. let frolov play on the second line and first PP line. that will stretch the d and allow him to play against lesser competition (in theory).
dubi-ec-gabby
frolov-prospal-cally
avery-AA-mza
boog-dru-prust
i might consider switching prospal and AA for the russian connection
by BronxBeliever on Jul 27, 2010 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions
i would just swap cally and mza.. AA likes tough guys around him.. i think it should work
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
is cally a tough guy? i know he hits everything but i dont know if i would call him a tough guy lol. AA also needs to toughen up- i know what he said in that interview but he’s a big dude and needs to be more physical now that he’s no longer a rookie. avery should provide enough toughness on his line anyway and MZA’s playmaking abilities against 3rd line competition would really shine and give AA’s #’s a boost this season.
by BronxBeliever on Jul 27, 2010 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions
He already shields the puck well with his body.
He’s pretty big already, any bigger and he’s gonna lose speed.
i didnt mean that he needed to get bigger, just tougher and smarter. someone of his size shouldnt feel like he needs to play on the same line as a shelley and prust to be safe and effective
by BronxBeliever on Jul 27, 2010 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions
I'm talking about a serious threat line that opposing teams plan for.
We have not had that since the (Straka – Nylander – Jagr) days.
And didnt Duby play half the season on the wing of the second line?
he didnt start the year on the first line i dont think but smurf would have to give you the #’s of who he played with the most.
Do we need a ‘serious threat line’? a forty goal scorer in gabby, a 25 goal guy in dubi and playmaker in ec is enough of a first line threat to me (would be nice to have a better pivot i admit). other teams would still have to plan for it soley because gabby is on that line. that means that they either focues entirely on gabby and put their real top-2 against it allowing frolov to play against lesser d-men and expose them. if they decide to split up their top two in order to defend against two lines, gabby will be at an advantage.
by BronxBeliever on Jul 27, 2010 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions
Frolov – Christensen – Gabby
Prospal – Dubi – Cally
Avery – AA – MZA
Boogie – Drury – Prust
That would be my guess
My Sather review: Even a broken clock shows the right time twice a day
I wouldnt be shocked to see Prospal see 3rd line minutes on some nights.
He did run out of gas a little last season.
If MZA thrives:
Frolov – EC – Gabby
Duby – AA – MZA
Prospal – Drury – Cally
Boogs – Avery/Boyle – Prust
Else:
Frolov – EC – Gabby
Duby – AA – Prospal
Avery – Drury – Cally
Boog/MZA – Boyle – Prust
i know we might want him to be
but dubi is not a C anymore guys. torts likes him on the wing and that is where he likely to stay
by BronxBeliever on Jul 27, 2010 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions
Any sense to pair him with AA, or is the ‘put him on the same line because they’re of the same nationality’ school of thought bogus?….
well you still need to consider the players (i.e. two shitty players from the same country playing together wont make them miraculously good) but in this instance i think it might be a great thing. frolov has loads of talent, and since lisin is gone AA needs a new russian buddy. it could give both players a boost
by BronxBeliever on Jul 27, 2010 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions
That would help Anisimov...
Only if AA was centering the 2nd line. Frolov on the 3rd would be a waste.
you guys know how happy i am right now!!! :) ive been calling for this forever now.
frolov in, redden out. we get younger and more skilled, and were signing a minimum 50 point player for a 1 year 3 million dollar deal :) and you know hes going to be working his ass off for a new deal.
this is the BEST move slats could make right now. im pumped.
dubi ec gabby (keep these 3 together)
frolov prospal mza (2 solid scoring lines)
avery aa cally (good toughness around AA which he likes)
prusty drury boogie (drury actually fits well here)
boyle
staal mdz
girardi rozi
eminger/mcd/gilroy
wooohoooo!!!!! what a great day today is :)
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
am I the only one?
Who is actually thinking Staal isn’t going to get signed? I mean, we’re dealing with Sather and Dolan here. I’M SCARED!!!!
Brooks has good timing
@NYP_Brooksie “Including Frolov contract, Rangers have approximately 6.8 remaining under the summer cap. Team is not in distress regarding Staal.”
Just a fun fact
Anyone ever point out that Chris Drury got paid $251,562.50 per point last year in salary? It was only 220k against the cap, though. That could be some kind of NHL record. Does any other team in the league even pay $7mil combined for their 3rd line?
Redden Cost $571,428/pt
probably not a fun fact though
