Frolov discusses his decision to sign with the Rangers

The Los Angeles Kings media guide lists Russian forward Alexander Frolov's favorite NHL city to visit as New York, and his top arena to play in as Madison Square Garden.   Starting this fall, the 28-year old former King will get the opportunity to try the city and its famous arena on for size full-time, thanks to the cap-friendly, one-year, $3 million dollar contract he signed with the Blueshirts on Tuesday.

According to reports, Frolov left as much as $20 million dollars on the table in the KHL in order to remain in the NHL and experience life New York.  Frolov discussed his decision to sign with the Rangers and his expectations for the new season in an interview with Sport-Express correspondent Alexander Shapiro on Wednesday.

Their conversation, as originally translated on Beyond the Blueshirts, appears below.

Star-divide

- Many hoped that this summer you would return to Russia.  Why didn't it come together?

- I actually had two good offers from KHL clubs, but at the same time there were opportunities to continue my career in the NHL, where a few clubs were also interested in me.  In the end I chose the Rangers, because that option seemed optimal.

- It's generally known that you were actively invited to both SKA and Salavat Yulaev [Ufa].  It's said that in Ufa they offered you a four year contract for the sum of about $20 million.  Is that the truth?

- I won't hide that Ufa wanted very much to sign a contract with me.  I communicated with head coach Vyacheslav Bykov, and he talked about the interest the club had in my services.

- There wasn't resentment towards Bykov after he didn't take you to the Games in Vancouver?

- I already forgot about the Olympics a long time ago, and I don't want to discuss that subject today.

- On SKA you could have become a teammate of [former San Jose Shark goaltender Evgeny] Nabokov, with whom you played in the same conference in the NHL.  Incidentally, were you surprised with his decision to move to Russia?

- Zhenka apparently thought that it would be better for him.  And it doesn't seem right to me to discuss or criticize the action of any other player.  Each hockey player has the right to choose for himself where to continue his career.  I want only to wish him good luck: that in the KHL he will play as reliably as he did in the NHL.

- As I understand it, given the fact that you signed a one year contract with the Rangers, your return to Russia next summer isn't ruled out?

- In our lives anything is possible.  For now I've been offered good conditions with the Rangers.  I want to play for this distinguished club and live in New York.

- Did you consider the option of remaining in Los Angeles?

- I spent seven years on that team, and felt that it was time to change something.

- Have you already had a conversation with the leadership of the Rangers?

- Yes, I communicated with them before signing the contract.  It was very important for me to understand in what capacity they would count on me.  I heard that on the Rangers I'll receive a lot of playing time, will regularly be on the ice during the power play.  Most likely, I'll play on a line with the leader of the team, Gaborik.  In New York they want me to create a high-powered offensive unit with Gaborik.

- Last season your peer Gaborik was the unconditional leader of the Rangers and scored 86 points (42+44) in 76 games.  What can you tell us about this player?

- He's very talented, fast, sees the ice well, can both score and set up.  I think that Marian is one of the best players in the NHL today.

- One other Russian, Artem Anisimov, plays on the Rangers.  Perhaps that high-powered line will be the threesome of Frolov - Anisimov - Gaborik?

- And that, in my opinion, would make a very good line.

- For the last five seasons the main goaltender of the Rangers has been Swede Henrik Lundqvist -- one of the best goaltenders in the world.  Have you managed to score on him?

- Henrik is indeed a very high class goaltender.  It's just that right now I can't remember if I scored on him or not.  When I get to New York I'll by all means ask him if he can remember (smiles).

- Rangers head coach John Tortorella is famous for not entirely standard behavior.  Everyone remembers the episode, when during a game he flung a bottle at a fan.

- I don't need to get used to it (laughs) [i.e. I'm already used to it]. The most important thing for me is that the coach lets me play.

- You've spent your whole NHL career on a team in the West.  Now you've moved to the East, where your countrymen Kovalchuk, Ovechkin, and Malkin play.  You understand that there will be heightened attention on you?

- I don't think about inter-Russian competition (smiles).  For me the main thing is to adapt to the new club as soon as possible and start to be of use to it.  I'll do everything possible to score a little more.

- By the way, didn't you have the desire to sign a long-term contract, like Kovalchuk did?

- I was offered an agreement for several seasons, but the terms didn't suit me.

- The pre-season still hasn't begun in the NHL, are you planning to come to Russia?

- Most likely I won't be able to get home this summer.

I have no issues with Frolov-AA-Gaborik…but Tortorella has to change the way he matches up if he does it.

Putting that line out there against other teams top lines will probably not be pretty (i say probably because maybe AA has an insta-development like he did in the AHL).

Give me Dubinsky-Christensen-Prospal against the top lines…and it’s good.

I thought that was very interesting thinking Anisimov might be ready to make the jump to the top line. Very encouraging also, lol.

by CrazyRangerFan on Jul 29, 2010 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Keep in mind also that they both played for Russia at the World Championship last May, so Frolov’s seen him play up close. In fact, Anisimov outscored him at the tournament. Ok, it was only 3 pts to 1, but still! ;)

by Laurie Carr on Jul 29, 2010 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions

oh yeah I never even thought about them playing together at the WC but that makes a little more sense now that he said that.

by CrazyRangerFan on Jul 29, 2010 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

If you read Andrew Gross’s conversation with Torts, he said Frolov will have every opportunity to play with Gaborik.

by NTB on Jul 29, 2010 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah i saw that. Im not sold as i would still like to spread them out to give us some more secondary scoring, but it would certainly be interesting. Torts also mentioned how he wants to keep dubi on the wing, as well as prospal, but conceded that one of them is going to have get some time in the middle. I thought it was interesting how at the beginning torts praised the commitment to the core and then later in the article said that roster changes might still be needed and we needed help down the middle- seems like he’s a little confused lol

by BronxBeliever on Jul 29, 2010 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Have you already had a conversation with the leadership of the Rangers?

Maybe something was lost in translation but that seems like a pretty dumb question.

by jigblahdah on Jul 29, 2010 12:24 PM EDT reply actions

Im sure the interviewer meant ‘have you spoken to them about your role on this team’ not ‘have you spoken to them at all’. pretty hard to negotiate a contract w/o talking to the leadership of a team lol

by BronxBeliever on Jul 29, 2010 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions

maybe they negotiated via txt message. or better yet, tweets.

by jigblahdah on Jul 29, 2010 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I have a feeling Torts/Sather told him he’d play on Gabby’s line to ‘sweeten the deal,’ and I think they’ll be together on PP, but I hope that Fro anchors the 2nd line, and feel this will probably happen.

Funny Translation

This was clearly a direct translation, probably done by a computer program or a website, not taking any slang or idioms into account. A question like, “have you spoken with Rangers managment” comes out as “have you had communication with leadership of Rangers.” Just have to take it for what it is. I’m sure these guys both speak very well, the translator just kept it direct.

I wouldn’t mind seeming Anisimov get a shot with Fro and Gaborik. But I still think Prospal and Gabby have too much chemistry to move him away. That threesome could do some damage if given the chance to play Gabby-Prospal-Frolov.

I tend to keep all my translations extremely literal, so no one can ever accuse me putting words into people’s mouths or adding my own interpretations.

As for “probably done by a computer program or a website”. Ouch.

by Laurie Carr on Jul 29, 2010 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Haha

You can tell it wasn’t done on a computer program because the order of the words is correct. The program would have kept standard Russian sentence structure and plugged in the translated words.

No 'Ouch'

No offense intended — was only mentioning that it was kept literal because I saw people above me on the board point out some werid spots (“Maybe something was lost in translation but that seems like a pretty dumb question”). Like I said, “I’m sure these guys both speak very well, the translator just kept it direct.” Didn’t mean for it to come off in a ean way, sorry ’bout that.

It means that he has basic hockey skills, and can move around the ice. There’s no point in sticking a virtually immobile goon out on the ice.

As for the point, do you recall Hank getting run into repeatedly last year?
If it happens again Boogard is going to make them feel bad.

I’ll agree with this, I’ve spent a lot of time watching Booger lately and he has the fundamentals down. Boyle played 71 games last season and scored 4 goals 2 assists……for a player drafted in the first rd…….I’d say we should have expected a ton more from him….ok….like 8 ir 9 goals maybe? So when boogs puts up 4 pts this season…..its an epic WIN!!!!

I think McDonagh may start in Hartford, but will get called up if Gilroy or Eminger disapoints…which is not a stretch

Stepan is almost certain to start in Hartford…but I can seem him being a mid-season call up if Prospal tires out or gets injured or if Christensen falls out of favor, which he’s done almost his entire career

Honestly, I think Grachev is another year away, but he will eventually take Prospals spot or Christensen…those 2 were signed as stop gaps, so the boys on the farm have time to ready themselves

by The Suit on Jul 29, 2010 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t see Eminger as a starter. I think Gilroy and McD will both get their chance, with eminger as the guy to take the spot if either fails.

Could see that as well i suppose…McD def has a better chance of making the team than any of our other forward prospects

by The Suit on Jul 30, 2010 10:56 AM EDT up reply actions

I think the goal is to develop the youth in the minors. I think getting Stepan and McDonagh in the Rangers organization was the priority. So far as them making the big club, I don’t think there was any need to rush them. Otherwise, I don’t think Frolov, Prospal, or Christensen would have been signed, as Grachev, Stepan, Hartford Player-X could have had those spots.

From the business side, it seems like Dolan mandates that Sather put out a competitive product, and to do so specifically by bringing in "names’ rather than showcasing youth.

I wouldn’t have minded seeing something what the Avalanche did last year with Duchene, O’Reilly, Galiardi, Stewart, Yip, etc.

by Hoggo on Jul 29, 2010 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

yea i agree, i think they want the youth to make a name before being the showcase, like hank did.

what i like about the interview is that it seems like he has a chip on his shoulder and something to prove. i like that he’s a bit arrogant.

he wants to play in new york but i think he has so much confidence in himself for the coming season that he feels like if he gets ice time he can put up numbers like the big boys. if he does, he can command more than a four year deal at 5 mil.

by voice22 on Jul 29, 2010 2:45 PM EDT reply actions

Well that’s certainly why he signed so short. He wants a quick tryout so that he can put up 70 points and earn a larger contract next year.

bottom line, all these kids need more experience…a couple will make a splash but we’re not sure which ones. two thirds of prospects, i’d guess, never pan out. so if we can get three new faces in the lineup by the end of the season, that’s magic.

realistic goal for the season, five to seven games in round two of the playoffs.
