Rangers Analysis: A Look at the Youth Movement
Since the lockout, the Rangers have been very publicly throwing all sorts of cash at free agents. This, on the surface, has caused the Rangers to have multiple long contracts with high salary cap hits, leaving the Rangers really strapped for cap space. This is leaving a very sour taste in Rangers fans mouths, who are calling for a big youth movement. However, under the surface, the Rangers have been going through the youth movement, and have very quietly stockpiled a plethora of young, promising prospects and core roster players. While most of the high-end talent is still a few years away, many of these young players are making an impact on the current Rangers roster. The Rangers organization has been pretty effective at integrating young players into the lineup at the proper time:
2005-2006
Henrik Lundqvist: The franchise goalie and cornerstone of the franchise was the diamond in the rough that many fans still believe the organization is looking for. Selected in the 7th round of the 2000 draft, Lundqvist forced himself on to the roster in 2005 as a backup, but quickly usurped the starting role from Kevin Weekes midway through the year.
2006-2007
The 2006-2007 season was where we as fans saw a first glimpse of the future. Ryan Callahan participated in 14 games, while Brandon Dubinsky made a late season debut, skating in 6 games. The biggest impact was made by defenseman Dan Girardi, who played his way into the lineup as a regular, playing in 34 games. Although Girardi was the only big contributor this season, it was a sign of things to come for the Rangers, just two full seasons removed from an epic fire sale.
2007-2008
From the 2006-2007 trio, only Ryan Callahan did not play all 82 games in the 2007-2008 campaign, and that was due to a knee injury. Brandon Dubinsky showed promise, putting up 40 points in what was technically his rookie season, having missed the cutoff in 2006-2007. Added to the mix this year was shut down defenseman Marc Staal, who played 80 games and had a solid rookie year paired with Dan Girardi.
2008-2009
The 2008-2009 season was a bit of a stopgap year for the Rangers youth movement. Having packaged defenseman Fedor Tyutin for forward Nik Zherdev, the Rangers were hoping to trade from their surplus on defense to add a young scorer. Although Zherdev, just 24 at the time of the trade, did not work out, it was an attempt by the Rangers to add to the young core that was slowly developing both in the NHL and in the farm system. Between 2007-2009, the Rangers had four additional skaters make their debuts on Broadway: Dane Byers, Mike Sauer, Corey Potter, and highly touted Artem Anisimov.
2009-2010
Last season was a lot like the 2007-2008 season, and saw the Rangers introduce several new youngsters to the core lineup. Michael Del Zotto followed Marc Staal's lead, making the jump straight from Canadian Juniors and making an impact on the Rangers roster. Matt Gilroy, another rookie defenseman, hit the proverbial NCAA wall after 40 games last year, and was benched during the stretch run, but played in 69 games and will look to improve his performance next season. Artem Anisimov, mentioned above, played a full season, putting together solid offensive numbers in an extremely limited role. As his ice time grows, his point production will also.
Looking ahead: 2010-2011:
This upcoming season may see the introduction of wingers Dale Weise and Dane Byers, with Byers hopefully being given a legitimate shot to make the team. Neither are top-six wingers, but would fill a role on the team as third and fourth liners, respectively. Newly signed Norwegian sensation Mats Zuccarello-Aasen probably will not make the Rangers roster out of camp, but should be a solid midseason call up. Assuming Ryan McDonagh signs, expect him to make an impact close to what Dan Girardi made during his first full season with the Rangers.
Looking ahead: 2011-2012:
Derek Stepan and Evgeny Grachev will hopefully lead the class of 2011-2012 Rangers youngsters, and not a moment too soon. Both are top-six potential, something the Rangers sorely need. It is possible that these play their way on to the team earlier, but this is a more realistic goal for them.
Looking ahead: 2012-2013 and beyond:
First round pick Chris Kreider, who plans on turning pro after the 2010-2011 season, may be NHL ready after a full season in Hartford. Also, look for Ethan Werek to challenge for a spot in the 2012-2013 season with Kreider. Around the time that Kreider and Werek are challenging for a roster spot, expect newly drafted Dylan McIlrath, who is a mean SOB, to be on his way to a roster spot as well.
Before the 2010-2011 season even starts, the Rangers will have successfully introduced eight young, home-grown players into the NHL club. By the end of the 2011-2012 season, that number may jump from 8 to as high as 14. The youth movement you all have wanted has under construction for years, and we are beginning to see the rewards of successful drafting. The Rangers youth movement is under the radar because of two things: high profile overpayment of free agents (which everyone notices), and making the playoffs, or being in the hunt. Both are reasons why the Rangers fan base has been overlooking the current youth movement, but rest-assured, the youth movement not only will happen, it is happening.

Interesting that you think Werek is still 3+ years out, when some reports (ok, only Jess that I’ve seen) have him maybe challenging this year.

i wouldnt count Kreider and Werek out of the club in a year to go with Stepan and EG 11-12. It is possible that a Kundratek in a year as well. Two years from now maybe Pashnin and McIlrath. at that point we will really have the youth movement. I only count 7 on the roster because Gilroy doesnt count for me since we had no part in his development and you mentioned home-grown in your lead up to the count.
he has to come first. he gets out of his deal after this coming year and has said many times he really wants to play in the NHL.

i really like this article, my ownly quarrel is i see both stepan and grachev making the team this year, and if the Rangers feel they can replace avery with byers then they will do that also
im as big on stepan as anyone, but he is not ready for the big club this year unless we are going young and letting them learn on the job.
by Michael Gleich on Jul 6, 2010 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions
There’s no room for Grachev/Stepan because of the Prospal/EC signings, I believe.
I think Grachev needs another Hartford year anyway, so he can follow the Anisimov path of getting his feet under him, then dominating for a year, be a late season call up and then spend 11-12 full time.

now i could see that scenario where we are out of it by the deadline deal off some vets (prospal, aves) and bring up Step and EG to get some nhl time.

Avery won’t be here Moshe. I know that’s heartbreaking for you, but it’s really slim, if not zero.
Don’t see Werek 4th lining it either. That’ll be Horak’s spot. Dubi-Werek-Cally and then Byers-Horak-Weise makes more sense.

I was thinking flip Anisimov and Stepan myself, or even move Dubi all the way up and have Anisimov shift to 3rd LW if he doesn’t improve his faceoffs.
Lots of interchangable parts, which is equally nice.

Its really funny how we all think this is sick and would be a good team. Anyone outside of the Ranger fan base looks at this and says wow this team will come 30th no doubt lol.

Yeah…faceoffs are a minus for this team aside from Dubinsky, at least right now. It will also be interesting to see who is taking other team’s 1st lines, I think early on there would have to be a dramatic difference, like:
Dubi-Anisimov-Gaborik
Kreider-Stepan-Cally
Grachev-Werek-MZA
At least until someone establishes themselves.
And I responded.

Has to be Cally or it doesn’t change anything, you’d still only have two people who have proven they can outscore getting the tough minutes.

Assuming of course Redden and Boogaard get either sent down, traded, or bought out, the Rangers let Drury, Rozsival, EC, Prust, Avery, Boyle and Biron go, and the Rangers not signing any FA or trading the prospects mentioned.
I hope I am not the only one in thinking this is not how the lineup will look like in 3 years.

no buyouts, period. i would keep prust and they probably look to sign mikko koivu next summer, but other than that most of it is reasonable for maybe as early as 2012-13
by Michael Gleich on Jul 6, 2010 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions
It makes the assumption that everyone will arrive on their timetables, and there are no flameouts.
So yeah, it’s an optimist’s view, but it’s not completely unreasonable.
Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay
by George E. Ays on Jul 6, 2010 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions
When things look too good to be true, they most likely are. Just like this off-season, Boogaard was a player we didn’t plan on being part of this team. Next off-season, a player we didn’t plan on being part of this team will sign, and next off-season and so on. The Rangers don’t sit still.
"Jaromir Jagr.... it's a POWER PLAY GOAL!"
- Sam Rosen
"Marian Gaborik.... it's a POWER PLAY GOAL!"
-Sam Rosen
Booger was out of left field, yes, but he didn’t disrupt much of what most projected for this year, which was re-sign the key FAs (Staal, Girardi, EC, Prospal, Prust) and otherwise stay status quo. (ignoring those screaming for #1 centers and Kovalchuk for now)
He replaced Shelley for those who wanted to bring the heavyweight back. Others though that spot might get taken by a kid (Byers/Dupont). Regardless, the spot was accounted for, maybe not with the name we thought, but it was.
So yeah, maybe they’re smart and go steal Mikko Koivu next year and he takes the place of someone, or they go sign Hejduk or someone. I don’t think anyone’s saying it can’t happen, some of us are just hoping it doesn’t.
Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay
by George E. Ays on Jul 6, 2010 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions
Signing a Koivu or Hejduk just pushes players down the depth chart. So, essentially, a spot for someone who shouldn’t be on the fourth line ultimately will. (As in the players in the top nine would stay, but adding another top nine forward, moves one to the bottom)
"Jaromir Jagr.... it's a POWER PLAY GOAL!"
- Sam Rosen
"Marian Gaborik.... it's a POWER PLAY GOAL!"
-Sam Rosen
Well..I’m saying signing a Koivu might make them look at whether they need to keep Anisimov and Werek and Stepan, or if one needs to shift to wing and trade off Dubinsky/Callahan, or other dominoes.
Some guys can’t be pushed to the 4th line, they’d have to be pushed out.
Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay

In which case you push them out to get a solid prospect or a first round pick, and the cycle continues.

if Avery is gone (I hope not) then I hope some of these new kids comin up have personalities and are at least fun to watch. From these players the only guys that show a bit of personality are Cally, Hank, Gilroy & sometimes Dubinsky.
Favre 4 Ever
I Believe In Chris Drury
Drury. Girardi. Staal. Roszival. Ec. Boyle. That good? I cant blame AA since he’s still getting used to life in America and isnt familiar w/ the English language.
Favre 4 Ever
I Believe In Chris Drury
i completely disagree with you saying staal and drury dont have personality?
do you know them personally? just because they are quiet doesnt mean they dont have a personality?
ive seen staal stand up for players numerous times, and ive seen drury block more shots than i can count.. to me thats more than enough personality
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
Im not talking about on ice “personality” Drury giving 100% effort when blocking those shots is not his personality, its his ability and hockey sense. Those 2 are my favorite players on this team and I would never knock either of them. In their interviews Drury is Captain Cliche and Staal doesnt give much either, its just boring really and you can predict what will be said. So while its tough to watch the interviews & behind scenes type stuff (no, its not that important but I like it) I dont blame either of them for being that way since thats the way most NHL Players are now with the media, just straight cliche’d answers. Hockey could really benefit if players were themselves with the media instead of being afraid of how the media would turn something they said into a negative. Personalities make the team more interesting and fun, look at Nick Swisher on the Yankees who has easily become a fan favorite because of his success ont he field and how fun he is off the field. Thats all Im saying.
Favre 4 Ever
I Believe In Chris Drury
Swish is a fan favorite…but Jeter and Rivera, two of the most robotic media people you’ll ever see, are still driving forces. I think Jeter and Rivera are quite fun to watch personally.
Now if you suck, having no personality won’t endear you to anyone (add it to the list for Redden). So there’s that.

sligth highjack of thread
although not really. anyone have updates on kovy today? the longer he stays unsigned the more time sather has to try work him in somehow, and that could mean some serious damage to our cap/ youth movement. hoping la jumps back in the mix and he goes far away from us and the atlantic div
i cant see this ending too well for the us. either sather blindly jumps into this in his usual style throwing huge money at kovy and killing our cap, or he signs with the devils and he becomes a pain for us to face on a division rival, how did this turn into a no win for us so quickly?

There's alot of worse places our cap could go
Landing Kovi would be HUGE – he’s just the scorer we need to wake up our offense. Best part is, he’s been scoring those goals with no help for years now. He can do the same thing here.
he’s a huge talent no doubt. but signing him would necessaitate sather dumping redden, voros and finding someone to trade brashear just so that we could sign girardi and staal again. its a lot of intricate manuevering that i just do not have faith in sather to pull off. not to mention the difficulties it would present next offseason with dubi, cally, aa. that being said i wouldnt kill myself if sather brought him in

I see Redden being waived this year and McD making the team as the 6th dman.
I see MZA making the team as a 2nd line RW this year.
I see Grachev and Stepan dominating in the AHL in the first half and being promoted when the Rangers cant score enough goals. Prospal in my opinion is damaged goods and although EC has talent, I dont view him as a top 6 forward.
your underrating the AHL, for someone like stepan i bet its gonna be a bit of an adjustment, and Jess has been steadfast in his belief that stepan is most definetly not NHL ready. I would call it a great year if stepan is dominating by the end of the year, much less the beggining

hijacking a thread here… Jon Stewart just trashed Dolan on the Dailey show for ruining the Knicks and Rangers. Don’t want to miss quote it. Might try and find a link.
Ranger Prospects
Are the Ranger prospects any better than the prospects for other NHL teams? Most of our prospects who are projected to join the Rangers in the next few years are playing in Hartford. The Hartford team didn’t make the playoffs. Do we really think that the prospects have such a bright future that the Rangers will be competing for the CUP? It seems to me that there is a ton of wishful thinking about the future. The Rangers are a wretched group of untalented spare parts. Sather & Co have ruined the Rangers. I have no faith that the Rangers will improve during his tenure as GM. It will be interesting to see which of the highly touted prospects make the club, when they do it and whether it makes any difference.
Of the prospects talked about, only Grachev, Byers and Weise were in Hartford last year.
Stepan, McDonagh, Werek, McIllrath, Pashnin, Valentenko, Kloucek, Kundratek and Zuccarello-Aasen were all in different leagues.
Also, a major issue with Hartford is that there’s not much in the way of goaltending. When CJ was here…they relied on Valiquette and Zaba, neither of whom was exactly dominant.
Are the prospects alone enough for a cup run? No, probably not. Are the prospects combined with the parts that are here (Henrik, Staal, Dubinsky, Callahan, Gaborik, Anisimov) good enough? Yeah, they could be.
It’s certainly optimism in one of it’s purest forms. But it’s better than sitting around crying “whoa is me” as a Rangers fan.
