Ryan McDonagh Signs
The Rangers have officially signed touted prospect Ryan McDonagh out of the University of Wisconsin. McDonagh, a physical defensive defenseman, was acquired as a part of the Scott Gomez trade in June, 2009. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but expect something along the lines of the Derek Stepan deal.
Update by Dave: The cap numbers for McDonagh are in, via CapGeek. McDonagh signed a three year, entry level contract with a base salary of $875,000. McDonagh will also receive $425,000 in performance bonuses per year and $87,500 per year in signing bonuses. This total of $512,500 in bonuses puts McDonagh's cap hit at $1.3 million per season.

max is about that. the rest is the bonuses. mdz might get more bonuses since he got here at a younger age.
by Michael Gleich on Jul 6, 2010 5:36 PM EDT up reply actions
The max is $900k
MDZ was $850k + $212500 in bonuses.
MZA got $900 + $850k bonuses.
Taylor Hall, for instance, got the Tavares 900k + $2.875m
Figure McDonagh for something between MDZ and MZA…around $1.5m, give or take.

Regardless of his contract
when he plays in the AHL he will make significantly less (like probably as little as most regular folks make, yes they do make that little in the minors)
All entry level contrats are 2 way, which means they get paid a whole lot less in the minors. Yhose salary numbers are only for time spent at the NHL level
Assuming he sees Hartford. I wouldn’t call it a definite.

Unless they go with 7 d men
he doesn’t hsave a roster spot (not a bad idea, but is it really in a young players best interest to sit vs playing in HFD? regardless of who that player is?)
I will believe a redden elimination when I see it.
Well, technically they only have 3 defenseman right now (Rozsival, Redden and Del Zotto)
Gilroy ended last year in Hartford and Staal/Girardi aren’t signed.
I hear what you’re saying on Redden, but he’s not the only one whose roster spot could be in jeopardy.

Girardi will be back guaranteed,
even if its only a 1 year deal. Thats what you get in arbitration. He didn’t exactly have a great year either. He will still be an RFA next year if thats the case I belive
I’m with the “skeptical until I see it” crowd on Redden. Out of anyone, I think Gilroy really need to have a solid camp. Gilroy and McDonagh are are question marks. Torts knows what he is going to get from everyone else.
I can’t remember is Gilroy subject to reentry waivers this year?

how do Taveres and Hall get performance bonuses o the $2.875M? I though the max for any one category for performance bonuses was $212,500 (and there are something like 9 categories which would be max about $1.9M)
i get the $87,500 in signing bonus since that is 10% of his salary of $875k
any ideas?
there are schedule B bonuses for awards like calder, mvp and the like.
by Michael Gleich on Jul 7, 2010 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions
thanks – so if he doesn’t win NHL awards bonuses (which are paid by the league and the club) does that count against the cap? same question for performance bonuses as well – if he doesn’t reach those, how does that work against the cap?
ie) if he scores 3 goals and has 3 assists all season (i think minimums for D-Men are like 10 goals and 25 assists) for Entry Level.

Buried deep in Dan David’s article at the Ranger’s website is a line that, to me, may be the most impressive thing of all:
“We have a great academic staff, and they have already started working on stuff to make sure that it’s all laid out and organized for me to complete my degree, no matter how long it takes.”
Along with a reminder that one of the last Ranger’s Greats that came out of Wisconsin also came out early, and finished his degree while in the NHL, then returned to get a graduate degree – Mike Richter.
Stepan and McDonagh are making me downright giddy thinking about what it will be like in a couple years (maybe even next year???) with the likes of Kreider, Grachev, Stepan, McDonagh along with the existing “young core”…..
yes, 12 months time we could have 6 youngsters from the system added in McDonagh (this year), Grachev, Stepan, Kreider, Werek.

salary cap
guys- I am all for sending Redden down to Hartford. But you guys don’t mention Rosival and Drury very much. In terms of what we get in return (goals, assists, etc) their contracts are as almost as bad as Redden’s. Can you imagine if all 3 were off the books?
Rosi could actually be traded away as he only gets paid
4 mil this year and 3 mil next. A team watching their budget could take on the salary if they don’t care about the 5 mil cap hit.
Drury is un-movable unless he retires or is injured and placed on longterm IR. He has a NMC. Can’t trade or bury him in the AHL

If they really wanted to shed Rozi, they could just play the same games with him..benching him for stretches, generally making it miserable to stay.
However, I think Torts likes him (evidenced by giving him the A temporarily), so I think they’d obey the NTC as much as possible (but still probably trade him)

ESPN Rumors
I know how unreliable these are, but their rumor central insider section is reporting the Rangers are checking out Kovy…UH-OH-ish
ol reliable eklund has been reporting that we are the dark horse/ one of the main holdups for the past few days. i am still undecided on whether or not it is uh-oh for me. if sather was able to pull off a select few moves (dump redden and voros in hartford and trade brashears contract) it could be a great signing as those three moves would almost cover the cost of kovys new deal. that being said our #1 priority should be signing staal while we still have money, not pushing ourselves to the cap ceiling with UFA’s
by BronxBeliever on Jul 7, 2010 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions
More reliable than that (E) person (he who shall not be named), Darren Dreger stirred up a storm by saying:
Kovalchuk should simply declare, publicly his want to play for the Rangers. I bet Slats would clear the deck and make it happen.
Now whether there’s any fire behind that smoke is a great question. But there’s sure a ton of smoke….
As I’ve said, it’s like Souray to me. Until he’s somewhere that isn’t here, I’ll believe Sather is at minimum talking about it.

We were working this out actually
If the Rangers sign Kovalchuk to a 7.5 million dollar deal
Dropping Redden in the AHL would clear enough cap space for him to fit.
Next year the Rangers would have 3.25 million in extra space to re-up Gilroy, AA, Callahan and Dubinsky. That’s not 3.25 million for all three, that’s 3.25 on top of the salary that comes off the books once those players are free agents.
Then the year after that, the Rangers drop 12 million in salary with Rozsival and Drury.
It can work.

by Joe Fortunato on Jul 7, 2010 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions
not to mention an additional 2 mil from avery coming off the books the same year as dru and rosi. the difficult part would be getting kovy, girardi, and staal signed before we are able to demote people at the end of training camp. the 10% summer cushion allows teams to go around 6 mil over the cap during the summer bringing it to around 65 mil. realistically we would need around 15 mil to get all three of those contracts down (8 kovy, 4 staal, 3 girardi). it would be possible to do this summer, but brashear’s contract would have to be traded and most likely voros as well to get it done this summer. once we can demote redden we would be in the clear
by BronxBeliever on Jul 7, 2010 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, I just started reading that conversation.
If you drop Redden, you have to put a D-man in his place, so if it’s McD, it’s only 5.2m in savings, not $6.5.
That leaves you with only $13m for Staal/Girardi/Kovalchuk. That’s not enough money.
Even if you drop Brashear and Voros, it only clears, what? $2.4m? (Not sure about the Brashear rules here).
So that’s $15.4…figure Staal/Girardi/Kovalchuk eats up $15m. You have $0.4m left over, with only 12 forwards and 6 d-men.
Something else has to give.

by BronxBeliever on Jul 7, 2010 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions
Always forget about that cap calculator on capgeek. Yeah, my math is off.
I used Byers instead of Stepan, so that’s fine.
It works but you have 0.9m and only Prospal coming off (since I’m already not counting Voros/Brashear/Boyle)
So that’s $3m left to re-sign Dubi/Cally/AA/Gilroy (if you chose). That’s not enough to give them the raises they’ll likely get.
So it has to be done another way. I think.
Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay
by George E. Ays on Jul 7, 2010 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions
its certainly not enough to give them the raises they are going to want. but as everyone says, the youth needs to start coming up soon so we’re going to have to start moving some players, maybe a gilroy has to be moved. rosi will have some trade value next offseason as well with only 1 yr with 3 mil owed to him (despite a 5 mil cap hit)

Yahoo Player Agent quotes.
Some good stuff:
The New York Rangers were active, but not for the bigger name players on the market.
They agreed that 4 years and $6.5 million for a player with both a history of concussions and a decline in fighting totals was a confusing move. They also felt that the Rangers, more than any other team, were a franchise without a plan during this summer’s Frenzy.
“Keep Glen Sather away from the switch,” said one agent.
@kausatoday: Washington’s Michael Nylander is on waivers today. His salary this season is $3 million, but his cap hit is $4.875 million.
Provided salary is taken off the books, any interest in a one year deal?

The big problem with adding kovy is the timing, we are not ready to compete for a stanley cup next year anyway, and we would need to add down the middle to have any sort of shot. Look at the old atlanta teams, kovy and heatley or kovy and hossa never worked, you need centers and to have your teams strength be down the middle. What i really want is to trade for Connolly. Would deal Girardi and more. Buff lost 2 of top D men so may be interested in Girardi even though they got kubina
The flaw in that argument
is that Atlanta never had a defense or a goalie worth a crap. The Rangers have a competant D and a great Goalie. (I live in ATL and have been to many many games)
defense
the rangers just need to waive redden and roszival, sign staal and girardi to long term deals, and bring the kids up and go from there. the rangers need speed to keep up in the division, the kids will help us in that area!
there arent enough kids in the minors on D who are ready to take both spots.
