Friday Morning Open Thread: Where Is Kovalchuk Now Edition?
Well at least you can all sleep soundly knowing that LeBron James won't be mentioned here ... oh wait.
5) Rangers fans should be happy that LeBron didn’t come to the Garden. Otherwise your boys would forever be on MSG-Plus or MSG-4 or whatever on nights when the Knicks were playing
I never thought of that, but he's right. Whew, bullet avoided.
Anyway, now that LeBronathon has come to a close, we get to wait on Kovalchukapalooza. All indications were that Ilya Kovalchuk was going to be a Los Angeles King, then a New Jersey Devil, the a New York Ranger, then back to a King and now who knows.
The whispers that he and the Rangers were "interested in each other" have still not be doused, so I still wouldn't rule out Glen Sather from pulling the trigger on something like this. At the end of the day, the longer Kovalchuk waits, the better shot he has on a general manager panicking and throwing more money at him then they probably want to. Kovalchuk knows it, and his agent knows it.
Of course, on the other hand, it's a very dangerous game to play. Mainly because if Sather (and the rest of the NHL) manages not to pick up the phone and offer Kovalchuk more than they want to pay--$7.5 million a year in the Rangers case--then he looks like more and more of a headcase.
Regardless there are other free agents out there who are looking for homes. So use this as your open thread for today. Obviously if anything goes down we will update it for you here, and you can move your open thread conversation to the new story.
You all know the drill! Have at it, the floor is yours.

IMO the Rangers getting Kovy would be great...
1) The Rangers would have to put Redden in Hartford…Thank GOD
2) We would have some serious offense added…not an underachieving piece of crap like Jokinen lol
3) If we can sign him to a 7yr 60mil i say do it, the Rangers would either have 2 lines with a 40+ goal scorer or Gabby and Kovy team up with one of Duby, Anisimov, Prospal, or christensen.
4) Torts can seriously coach big time players (IE: st. louis, lecavalier, richards)
5) C’mon when could you say Rangers and two 40+goal scorers in the same sentence?
but what happens when his dogging it getting back to the defensive zone leads to a goal against
at least gaborik plays responsible in the defensive zone (though he could really get better, which i believe he will)
actually I think that Gaborik
is probably one of the best 40+ goal scorers out there when it comes to defense. He was born and raised in that Minn defense first system

Agreed Joe. Gaborik is much better at defense than Ovechkin and Kovalchuk combined. Playing in Minny certainly helped to accomplish that and I think that makes him even more of a value to this team, in addition to all the offense of course.

Very true, Joe.
I’ve been impressed that a 40-goal scorer with a quick stick defensively, hasn’t been nominated for the Selke more than once.

i dont think i could say great
and certainly not at a 8.7 cap hit annually. he is a tremendous talent. TREMENDOUS. our offense would be instantly better. but ill repeat what i have said in the past about kovy:
1) signing him would require us to do it for a very long time to reduce his cap hit, im talking about 10-12 years, and thats a loooooong time.
2) even signing him at the reduced rate because of added on years, sather would have to do some very fancy manuevering to get him, staal and girardi under the cap this offseason and next year. im talking about moving brashear, voros and redden all in a very short time frame. i dont think sather is intelligent enough to pull something like that off
by BronxBeliever on Jul 9, 2010 9:32 AM EDT up reply actions
and im not willing to sacrifice staal and girardi to sign kovy long term

I agree with getting Kovy if it means getting rid of Redden. How many more years in Reddens contract? 4? OMG he has to go and go now!
Would love to see Kovy on a line with Stepan and Krieder.

If he really thinks he deserves 10mil, he’s completely delusional and should be institutionalized. Overrated, selfish, and defensively inept. He’s killing himself slowly everyday that goes by. If I was on the team he ends up signing with (if he’s signed at all), I’d have no respect for him whatsoever. He’s going to be a locker room disaster anywhere he goes. If he really wanted to win a cup, he’d realize that he can’t choke a team with a 10mil dollar cap hit that he’s not even worth. No one in the league makes 10mil, including Ovie and Crosby. And Kovalchuck sure as hell is not quite in the same league as those guys. Someone needs to check him really hard.
relax man
did he do something to you personally? I agree wholeheartedly that he is not, and never will be, the player that crosby is and therefore does not deserve anything close to 10 mil a yr. he turned down the atlanta offer because he didnt want to play their anymore, not because he thought he was the best player in the league. im not saying i want him, but if a team locked him down for 100 mil with an 8 mil cap hit annually, that really isnt that bad for a guarenteed 40+ goals a yr. you have to remeber that he did wear the C for a while down there in atlanta, so the staff obviously saw some inkling of leadership in him. maybe when put in the right position he would flourish as a leader. im not saying thats likely, just possible

This should be the end of the thread. Nothing else needs to be said. Idk where he gets off looking for that kind of money in this era.
Well to be fair
the KHL doesn’t help, because they inflated his ego with their 3 year 45 million dollar offer.
And I would assume that Kovalchuk thinks that if he was on the Capitals in palce of Ovechkin, he would put up pretty similar numbers, and I would have to agree.
In the end, it all depends on where you play. If Kovy was drafted in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington etc (big market, big time TV audience teams) he would be able to command more.
But because we went fron ATL to NJ (one small market to a smaller market) he isn’t as big to the NHL or to his indidivdual team.

nothing is set in stone...he could slip on a vodka bottle and break his head
guarenteed 40+ goals a yr
and then he goes on LTIR and his cap hit comes off?
by BronxBeliever on Jul 9, 2010 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions
or he comes back but is never quite the same…good enough to play but not good enough to score 40.
I"m just saying, nothing is certain and thats a long time to sign anybody, esp for that kind of money
the chances of that happening are slim
he will probably be a 40 goal scorer for the next 7 years or so.

Rangers & Kovi
Ok, first of all I want to point out up front that the only place I have seen the Rangers mentioned in the Kovi sweepstakes is on EK’s page. So, I don’t take much merit in any truth to it. Do I think Slats would sacrifice youth, go against everything him & Torts were preaching, and put the team deeper into a cap hole? yes.
But here’s the thing…
I truly believe Kovi does want to play for a contender & the Rangers are not a contender. They certainly won’t be a contender if he comes to the team because that would mean throwing big money at him that should be used on other guys in the organization.
A) We never ever use a rumor from Ek
B) Darren Dreger was the one who said that Kovy had interest in the Rangers and obviously vice versa.

also
if the Rangers signed Kovy to a 7.5 million dollar contract, the only move that would have to be done would be to drop Redden to the minors.
Then next year the Rangers would have the cap space (we’ll go into more detail if something actually happens) to re-sign Dubi, Cally, AA and Gilroy, and then the year after they get 12 million dollars in cap space from Rozsival and Drury leaving.

I hope the Devils sign Kovy
That would put them in some cap problems next summer and possibly unable to keep Parise, who by the way is much more valuable to the team concept than Kovy.
lou is way to smart a gm to put himself in a position where he has to abandon parise next summer. he is not giving kovy money that would prevent him from keeping the heart of his team
by BronxBeliever on Jul 9, 2010 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions
if the Devils give Kovy 8$ mill that puts them at $50 millon allotted to 12 players next summer…it will at least complicate things for them
wont langenbrunner and arnott alone count for like 7 mil coming off the books? if parise is making 3.1 he’ll be asking for around 6 the next year and half of their money can go to him
by BronxBeliever on Jul 9, 2010 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions
I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up un the KHL
The salary cap is becoming a problem. More and more players are going to the KHL because the money is better. It may only be a matter of time before the KHL becomes the league where the better players play. There is a competition between the NHL and KHL and if the cap stays, the NHL will lose in the long term. Kovi is just the latest example of a player who is worth a lot of money but can’t get it because of the artifical restrictions of the salary cap. To keep the marginal franchises, the NHL will have to give up talent over the long term.

nah
as good as Kovy is I don’t really want him on the team. The Devils didn’t win with him either…so he can sign anywhere but here. Cap space is already a problem with the overpaid hacks taking up the team roster. And what makes everyone think if Kovy signs Redden will be dumped? Sather isn’t that smart!
that said, I wouldn’t mind seeing him here, but….I’d rather not have him.

and then he filed for arbitration? This is the standard course of business. Staal will be next. Worry not.

Kovalchuk and the Rangers.....
Kovalchuk doesn’t want to go L.A. neither to the Devils. He loves money and limelight and that means N.Y.Rangers. If it happens the pressure will be on Tortorella; with McDonagh in the lineup the defense will be much stronger and leaving no room for excuses. So let’s wait and see what happens.
Well...
had The Big Cigar left out the Boogie Man and not renewed The Bronze Kneecap, there’s enough cap room to resign Staal and get Kovalchuk with a little more than a million left over after banishing Redden.

Ryan or Kovalchuk??

Since they’re not, Kovalchuk, because all he costs his money.
