Rangers News: Rangers Re-Sign Dan Girardi (Update: Official Terms)

NEW YORK - APRIL 09: Dan Girardi #5 of the New York Rangers fights with Scott Hartnell #19 of the Philadelphia Flyers during their game on April 9, 2010 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. (Photo by Chris McGrath/Getty Images)

One of the biggest questions surrounding the Rangers was whether or not they were going to be able to sign Dan Girardi and Marc Staal.

Well one of those questions was answered today. As per Andrew Gross the New York Rangers have agreed to terms with RFA Dan Girardi. Here is the tweet that Gross just sent out:

#NYRangers have announced the signing of RFA D Dan Girardi.

The terms have not been disclosed yet so we will get them to you when they are available. As of right now though, things seem to be moving in the right direction for the Rangers. Girardi, who filed for arbitration a few days ago, was expected to be signed before the court date, and Sather got it done.

This is good for everyone, because arbitration is basically a sure ticket to creating bad blood. Now Sather can focus on making Staal a happy man.

Thoughts guys?

Update by Joe Fortunato: According to Larry Brooks:

4 at $3.325 fair deal for both parties.Staal 6 at 4.5 or so would be same.

So I guess it's a four year deal worth 3.325 per year. Not an awful deal, but more expensive then we all expected. Those numbers are official. Girardi is in the books for 4 years at 3.325 million a year. Again, not horrible, but more expensive then I previously expected.

The San Jose Sharks have signed Blackhawks restricted free agent defenceman Niklas Hjalmarsson to a free agent offer sheet, signing the defenceman to a four-year, $14 million dollar contract.

Chicago has seven days to match the offer. If the team does not match it, they will receive San Jose’s first and third round picks in the 2011 NHL entry draft.

NYP_Brooksie Rangers bought 3 yrs of Girardi UFA. Looking to buy at least 2 from Staal.

Not sure what this means. 3 year deal?

by BillyDeeWilliams on Jul 9, 2010 12:57 PM EDT reply actions

It means

that after this season, Girardi would be an UFA, so by signing him to 4 years, they essentially locked up 3 of his UFA years in advance.

This also means that Staals deal would potentially be for more years, as he is younger and has less service than Girardi.

by GAThingy on Jul 9, 2010 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

no staal has 4 years left til ufa, staal would need a 6 year deal for that to be true

they can but giving him more than 4 yrs would mean that he is giving up yrs where he would be an UFA and concievably be making more money, so players and their agents usually try and avoid that. what sather wants to do is give him a little more than he is worth now and in exchange staal would give up the first 2 of those years…. a little give and take

i may be in the minority here but

wow 3.325 for 4 years… i don’t like that deal. For these numbers he better step his game up. No more being Staal’s parasite, he needs to play well with whoever he is paired with, and consistently. If he can do that then it would be worth it. But as of right now i see him as an average dman with little physicality and ordinary offensive numbers, and they give him this much? just making Staal’s case even better.

by Rags to riches? on Jul 9, 2010 1:22 PM EDT reply actions

++++100000 Def not the minority

Im so surprised everyone loves these numbers… At most I’d pay for girardi over 4 years is 2.5 3 mil for a shorter deal but that’s it. All h is is defense so we spent over 3 mil for that? He is great defensivly but he has his ups and Downs so let’s not all praise him like a staal. Not syaing anyone is I’m just saying that before anyone compares. I don’t get it somtimes his game has really not changed much since he’s been here. He’s been pretty solid since day one I don’t get why he needs a raise this big. I mean anything over 3m in this cap stricken era is nothing to overlook. That’s a lot of money and over 4 years!!! God damn maybe if we had some flexibility in cap it wouldn’t be so bad but we don’t so as of right now I’m hating this deal. I would have signed him for 2.5 for 3 years or 3 for 2. But since our year is going to be shit anyway I wouldv let him walk brought mcdonagh up let him take this year in stride and the year after I guarentee we’d forget girardi. I don’t know though maybe I’ll warm up to him and his deal during the season but now I hate it.

Since the face been revealed the game got real

by BL3ACH on Jul 9, 2010 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions

See i was going to do that and compare numbers to other players

But other players playe for other teams with other needs and have other cap issues. For us the deal is bad for the length more than the money. 4 years of almost 3.5 cap hit. Damn idk but I just so not see giradi as almost a 4 mil doller player. Crazy but like I said now that I mulled this over the length will hurt us if this was two years it’d be whatever to me but 4 years still don’t get it.

by klh2009 on Jul 9, 2010 2:27 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

He’ll still be a very tradable commodity at that price in 2 years, if it came down to a situation where you needed to shed him.

Length isn’t the issue to me. The extra $500 Sather keeps throwing at people though does add up after a while.

by BuckarooClub on Jul 9, 2010 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I like the signing and I’m def glad to have Girardi back in the fold. But let’s be real, who here would give Girardi 3.325? 2.75 max sounds better for a player like him. He’s a 3-4 guy on a better team. Hopefully he continues to improve though and really earn that cash. Girardi’s play always seems to be a matter of confidence. He just needs to get on a role and realize he can play gritty, aloof hockey all the time. Hopefully Staal takes that 4.5 now b/c there is no reason he should get more at this juncture, especially when you compare to other veteran shut down guys like Robin Regehr who earn just over 4mil (granted Staal is younger and still has a ton of potential). Kieth is now earning 5.5 as a norris winner with a few more years behind his belt and Seabrook is getting 3.5 at the moment.

Though it wouldn’t be a problem if we weren’t already so badly hamstrung by Drury and Redden (and, to a lesser extent, Rozsival and Brashear and Gilroy and Boogaard)

by JoshNY on Jul 9, 2010 2:47 PM EDT reply actions

Maybe a bit high, TODAY

but, with the way the cap has been escalating, in 2 years, Girardi may be a 5 mil plus commodity, and we will have him for 3.3 then

A poster earlier was even alluding to this when he said he would be pissed if the contract was 2 years.

Plus, his streak of 280 straight games is currently 9th longest in the leauge. a 3 million player who only plays 70 games really costs you 3.3 when you average it out.

One day ppeople complain Sather doesn’t pay our people to stay, when he does, he gets slamed with it was too much.

Time will tell if it was a fair price, too much, or a bargain. Bottom line is they retained a core player on defense, something most people were clammering for.

Could roll 7 D

and occassionaly throw Gilroy at F where he played before college

There’s no real room amongst the forwards either though. So unless we’re going to have $6.5m in the press box, I’m not sure what they’re doing.

Unless they manage to trade Rozsival.

Not out of the question given his salary is lower than his cap hit and he is a serviceable player

by GAThingy on Jul 9, 2010 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions

if redden does go down to AHL, which i doubt

he won’t get demoted till after camp, so people need to get over the whole spending money on free agent bs….the only way the Rangers get a top forward is via trade

I for one would be happy just to see him go.

I could care less about the money, and hope it is NOT spent elsewhere

by GAThingy on Jul 9, 2010 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions

no

with the bonus cushion of around 6 million, if sather was able to dump brashear on someone he would have 7.4 million to play with. he can do lots and lots of damage with that

by BronxBeliever on Jul 9, 2010 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions

no one is taking brashear, so why even talk about it.

by NTB on Jul 9, 2010 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions

because someone took voros

by BronxBeliever on Jul 9, 2010 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions

wow. possibly the worst comparison/logic ever.

by NTB on Jul 9, 2010 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

really because we got a serviceable player out of voros who only makes 400k less than brashear. why would a team who needs to make it to the cap floor mind wasting a nothing prospect on brashear. its one year and they can bury him the ahl as the team that signs the player over 35 is the only who cannot do thatw/o cap relief

by BronxBeliever on Jul 9, 2010 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Voros is 9 years younger and can still be used as a servicable 4th liner.

Brashear is best used as a paperweight at this point.

Why? B/c Voros can actually play hockey. He’s not a bad 4th liner. Brashear cannot play hockey anymore. If a team needs to get to the floor, they are not going to just throw 1.4M down the drain. They would just bring up some minor leaguer or sign one of the dozens of FA still out there.

Okay, i can live with overpaying HIM, 500K. Now, overpaying Boogard 500k which is giving him a 33% more than he deserves is absurd.

should of let giradi walk i think he got too much S PER OTHER PLAYERS

Is it true that nhl is looking to restructure the current cba after this season? Forgot where I hears it, but word is most general managers are looking for an option that would allow them to be able to buy out players in one shot without facing future cap restrictions? If that’s the case then rangers might just be looking toward the next offseason to buy out Redden and maybe even the final year of Rozi’s contract.

Girardi Supposed Contract

If the Girardi contract turns out to be $3.250 mil per year, it would be a waste of money. He is definitely not worth 2 Boogers. Sather continues to overpay. Rangers will finish behind the Islanders this coming season. Glad that “Are you ready to rumble” Voros will be quacking for the Ducks. Is Girardi worth 3 Steve Emingers?
