Rangers Analysis: Some Shootout Stats and Info!!

I wrote this on my blog: NYRangers365 so go check out my site.

An NHL.com article on the history of the first five years of the shootout inspired this article.  After I read it, I decided to do some research and found out some crazy information.

Adding a shootout to the end of tied games was one of the major rule changes put in place after the 2004-05 Lockout.  Prior to the lockout if a game went through 65 minutes, the game would be a tie and both teams would get only one point.  Now all games have a winner with the shootout in place and one team always gets two points.

The shootout is no secret to Rangers fans as they are tied for the most shootouts played in the last five years.  The Rangers, Oilers and Bruins have all participated in 65 shootouts.  Approximately one out of every six regular season Rangers games have been decided by a shootout since the lockout.

Some fans hate the shootout and some love it.  I am on the side that it is better then ties and until we have a better system in place, I am all for it.

We all have our favorite shootout moments whether it be Marek Malik ending the longest shootout in history or Crosby winning the first Winter Classic in a shootout.

So the NHL.com article inspired me to look up some shootout stats so join me after this for some great/crazy shootout stats...

Star-divide

All stats are from NHLShootouts.com:

The New York Rangers have participated in the two longest shootouts in history and won both.  The longest was a November 26th, 2005 battle with the Washington Capitals in which Marek Malik scored one of the most memorable goals in shootout history in the 15th round to win it. Here is Part of 1 of that shootout and here is part 2.  The next one is tied for the second longest in history, a 13 round battle on October 7th, 2006 in which Marcel Hossa scored the only goal against the Philly Flyers.

The Novemeber 26th battle with the Washington Capitals is also tied for the most goals in a single shootout with 7.

Only 19 shootouts have decided a scoreless tie and the Rangers have been apart of 4 of those which is the most of any team.  The Rangers are 2-2 in these 4 games, and most recently lost a 1-0 game to the New Jersey Devils on January 12th, 2010 in which both goalies made more then 45 saves.  Patrik Elias scored the only shootout goal in the 4th round.  Watch the video here!

The Rangers have faced the Devils the most in the shootout, that being 9 times and this is tied for the most games against one team.  The Rangers have won five while the Devils only 4.  So we have an edge somewhere.  The Rangers have faced the Panthers seven times, winning four of those.

Henrik Lundqvist hold 6 of the top 13 spots on the "Most shootout attempts versus one goalie list."  He has faced Zach Parise seven times which is the most one goalie has faced one player.  Zach has only scored on three of those attempts.  Lundqvist has also faced Miroslav Stan(2), Patrik Elias(3), Jamie Langenbrunner(1), Phil Kessel(2) and Brian Gionta(1) five times each.  The number next to there name is how many times they have scored on Hank.

Former Ranger Ales Kotalik is 4th in most goals with 21 in 42 attempts.  Current Ranger Erik Christensen is 10th with 18 in 35 attempts.

Marion Gaborik has the 6th worst shooting percentage with at least 10 attempts.  He is 2 for 18 with a 11.11%.  Others in the top 12: Dany Heatlet, Eric Staal, Kyle Okposo and Bobby Ryan.

14 players who have had a shootout attempt have a 100% shooting percentage.  12 of those shooters have only taken one attempt.  P.A Parenteau is 3 for 3 on shootout attempts, all of which came last year.

P.A Parenteau also had the longest scoring streak in Rangers shootout history going 3 for 3 last year.  His streak technically still continues this season with the Isles.

Most shootout attempts in one season for the Rangers was Brendan Shanahan who had 15 attempts in 2007-08.  He scored on 5 of them.

Most goals in one season for a Ranger goes to Nigel Dawes(2007-08), Brendan Shanahan(2007-08), Markus Naslund(2008-09), Michael Nylander(2005-06),(2006-07) and Nik Zherdev(2008-09) all scoring 5 goals in one year.  Of course Michael Nylander did it twice.

Only 3 Rangers who have taken a minimum of 5 shots in 1 season have missed on them all, Chris Drury went 0 for 5 in 2007-08, Jaromir Jagr went 0 for 5 in 2007-08 and Petr Prucha went 0 for 6 in 2006-07.

Henrik Lundqvist has competed in the second most amount of shootouts with 51 and won the second most amount of games with 30.  He is only behind Martin Brodeur in both stats.

Henrik Lundqvist longest shootout winning streak is 6 games from November-December of the 2008 season.

Hank has the 10th highest save percentage stopping 143 of 191 shot for a .749%.. In contrast New Rangers back-up Marty Biron has one of the worst shootout saving percentages with a .533% only saving about half the shots he faces.

Rangers shootouts per season: 17 in 2007-08, 16 in 2008-09, 14 in 2006-07, 11 in 2005-06, 7 in 2009-10.. This was definitely odd as shootouts rose in the league last year from 12.9% to 15% of games but the Rangers had there lowest total yet.

Rangers back-up goalies have gone 7 for 14 in shootouts which isn't bad but new Rangers back-up Marty Biron has only won 8 of the 22 shootouts he has been in.

No team has gone undefeated in one single season in the shootout.

The only thing we need to know about the shootout is how soon it’s going away.

Until Jim’s Uno plan gets put into play, this is a great option. I’m also in favor of any kind of drinking game to determine the winner.

I heard Artem’s a good juggler. Maybe we can have a juggling contest.

i think they should adapt that “choose your faceoff opponent” to the shootout.

each team chooses one of their own players, then the other team chooses the other 2 players.

should make for some great laughs.

Every shootout, Henrik will have to pull some moves in full equipment

he and the shooter start on the redline, he gets 2 mississippi’s head start. we can paint a special line on the ice which he must stay on during his headstart, hell we can zigzag it for good measure

I remember that Marcel Hossa shootout goal

I was doing shots of Jack Daniels and flipping back and forth between that game and the Mets playoff game, which they won. Hell of a night if I do say.

I am a fan of the shootout, but I am also against it. So, if I had to choose, I’d say I’m against it, but until further notice, it’s acceptable.

The only time, (I believe it’s the only time anyway), I’ve seen a tie in person is witnessing a 2-2 tie against Tampa. I’ve seen one shootout in person, and I remember being satisfied with a winner and a loser. Don’t get me wrong, I like ties. But if the NHl wants to have a winner and a loser, there really isn’t much you can do, that doesn’t take away the integrity of the game.

Here is hoping the NHL doesn’t implement a 4 on 4, to a 3 on 3, to a 2 on 2, OT format. Because that in my opinion, is worse.

The most interesting stat is...

the results of the voting. 33 for, 33 against and 39 down the middle.

by NYdemo on Aug 23, 2010 5:35 AM EDT reply actions

That is pretty interesting

Shows how this is really a debatable part of the sport. I really think the best thing to do is simply extend the OT time to ten minutes. In the grand sheme it wouldn’t take much more of a toll on players and you would see alot more games decided by actually plating hockey. Sure you’d get the occasional shootout, but not nearly as many.

yeah very true

based off of what I have read and heard, I would have thought that more people would have been against it.

Rangers go to a shootout 1 in every 6 games?

That is crazy! But then when you go back and look at seasons like 08-09 it is certainly believable. That year it seemed like they would try to get the game to the shootout because they knew they had Hank to save their a$$es.

I am not a fan of the shootout, actually. It is fun and exciting, yeah, but I do not feel like an entire game (or season in our case) should come down to one shooter on one goalie. Winning and losing in team sports has always been about a team effort, but I think the shootout works around that concept. I know there are varying opinions on this but that is just how I feel.

Btw, great research article! I love reading these!

The whole league goes to, on average, 11 shootouts per year (10.7 that is).

It’s pretty insane.

That is crazy. All I can say is thank God we have one of the better goalies in the league when it comes to shootouts. Otherwise we would be in trouble.

Though not insignificant, in 5 years Henrik’s been worth 9 standing points, 1.8 per year. (6th most in the league). The Rangers as a whole are +11, 2.2 per year.

Lundqvist is definitely one of the best

he has faced the most shots in 191
stopped the most shots in 143
But he has only 30 wins in 51 games

Rangers back ups are only 7 for 14 in the shootout
New Rangers back up Marty Biron is only 8 for 22 in SO’s and stops just over 50% of attempts.

what about an overtime...

where each team gets a 5 on 4 pp then possible move on to a 5 on 3…if the first team who has the pp first scores the next team gets a shot to score…and basically you go back and forth…this i feel makes the win more team oriented and maybe more if not just as exciting as a shootout…what do you guys think?

I’m wondering what Tim Thomas’ save stats are, because it seems he’s in almost every shootout highlight video.

Tim Thomas has been in 43 shootouts which ranks 5th
He has won 22 of those shootouts which is also 5th
He has stopped 115 of 156 shootout attempts which is a .737% which ranks 14th

The shootout seems to be good for the rangers

With those stats it seems that the shootout helps us more then some other teams. Im not the biggest fan of it but it has helped the rangers get an extra point on a decently common basis. I like the idea of the PP style OT but our PP isnt that strong so it would not help as much.

it has its ups and downs

Its an easy to follow and interesting for people who dont watch hockey to follow on a highlight video
It is a way of ending a game without a tie

The bad is that it determines games/seasons with just two players in a team sport

Side note I remember the malik shootout goal that was one of my favorite games of hockey I have watched recently because of that crazy long shootout

by Pballer505 on Aug 24, 2010 1:10 AM EDT reply actions

Great game it was..

Not many people remeber Jason Strudwick tying in before Malik got his chance but the Malik goal was definitely a crazy play.
