What Would You Do if You Didn't Have the Rangers?

What if they went away?

With the fragile state of the economy both in the U.S. and Canada, it's no secret that some NHL franchises are struggling. The Florida Panthers, Atlanta Thrashers, Columbus Blue Jackets, and even our neighbors to the east, the Islanders, are having attendance issues, money issues, arena issues, or all of the above.

So for as long as these teams continue to barely tread water and hemorrhage money, the debate over contraction will always rage on. While NHL commissioner Gary Bettman is on record saying that contraction is "not an option" for the NHL, it's a topic that won't go away.

For the sake of this story, your opinion on contraction doesn't really matter. There are good arguments for contraction, and good arguments against it, and to be honest, I'm not even sure how I feel about it, because I don't see any NHL teams being dissolved as long as Bettman is running the league. In case you haven't noticed, Gary's a tad stubborn.

So my question is: What about the fans? Love them or hate them, there are at least a few devoted Islander fans out there, cupcakes in hand. What about those diehard Panther fans, or the Blue Jacket Faithful? What would they do? Where would they turn?

Better yet, what would you do?

Let's say tomorrow morning, you got out of bed, hit the bathroom, went to your computer, and signed onto Blueshirt Banter (as you should do immediately following your morning trip to the reading room), and you saw this headline:

NHL TO CONTRACT NEW YORK RANGERS FOLLOWING 2010-11 SEASON

Now please understand we are dealing strictly in the hypothetical here. I don't want to see a headline on the Creature Report tonight that says "NHL to Contract Rangers?" I am merely posing a "doomsday what-if" scenario.

All Redden and Sather jokes aside, I am curious as to what you would do without the Rangers in your life. No Ranger fan would ever consider rooting for the Islanders or Devils, so that's out. Same goes for the Flyers, Pens, and probably the Capitals, I could never root for any of those teams either.

Would you give up watching hockey altogether? I guess that possibility exists, and I probably wouldn't be able to look at hockey for awhile, but I love the game too much to stay away forever. I guess minor league hockey would work for some, and while I enjoy it, there's only one NHL, and I think eventually I would have to come back to the game and have a team to root for.

For me, it would have to be an Original 6 team. I've never been able to get enough of the stories that have come out of the O-6 days of the NHL, so I've always been partial to those teams and their histories.

While I don't have anything personally against the Canadiens, I don't really feel like I fit in with their fan base. Habs fans come off as a little elitist to me.

Detroit? Too easy, they've had too much success in recent years; I'd always feel like I'd jumped the bandwagon. I couldn't root full time for the Blackhawks either, just can't see myself hitching my wagon to their star, even though my wife is from there. Boston? Forget it, I could never say "That Bruins game last night was wicked pissah!" and keep a straight face.

This brings me to the only choice for me, the Toronto Maple Leafs. They have a passionate, knowledgeable fan base, and their history is full of the same questionable moves, bad coaches, and unpopular ownership that I have grown accustomed to as a Ranger fan. Plus, with their 43 year Stanley Cup drought, for me it would be like turning back the clock to 1983. I think becoming a Leafs fan would be a pretty easy transition, and I bet I'd look pretty hot in one of their jerseys.

Maybe Julian and Chemmy over at Pension Plan Puppets would even take me on as a co-writer.

So what would you do?

To be honest I am just a hockey fan in general!!

I love watching hockey and do not care who is playing. Now if you gave me a choice I would rather watch the Rangers but if they got contracted I would still continue to love hockey just without my favorite team. To be honest I probably had more fun watching the playoffs this year then most Rangers games because overall hockey is that exciting and I am always on the edge of my seat during the playoffs no matter who is playing. Now live games at MSG are different but while watching on TV, I had a blast at my friends parties during the playoffs with a bunch of friends who jus love to watch exciting hockey. Some day the Rangers will be back at that level but for now Hockey is at its best as far as quality of competition and quality of action on the ice. Every night there are great and exciting games on TV so while we still have it I just like watching exciting hockey and hope the Rangers return to that level and hope they do not get contracted.. =)

As a little kid I used to follow the Oilers (specifically Messier), but I played goal so always admired Vanbiesbrouck. So it was always Oilers 1, Rangers 2 for me as a little kid (my dad isn’t a sports fan, so he never had an influence on things). When Messier got traded here, it became Rangers 1, Oilers 3. (No number 2).

So if this magical thing happened, I’d go back to rooting for Edmonton full time.

I would not have much of a life without the Rangers. Luckily I play the sport so I would have that, but as bad as they may be, the Rangers are my passion and I think I speak on behalf of most people here when I say that!

I also follow the Blackhawks (I lived in Chicago for 6 years) so I wouldn’t be too hockey deprived- but it just wouldn’t be the same going to MSG and not being able to watch hockey. And we’ll always have the Yankees.

First I'd jump for joy cuz it would take a team away from Dolan

then I’d cry cuz the only local hockey is the Islanders and ….Devils…AHHHHH!!

..I’d probably root for the Coyotes cuz they seem to be a Rangers minor league team, that actually is better then the big league squad.

I’ll never root for teams like the Caps, Penguins or whoever’s really good at the time since “tho shall not bandwagon”

by FreeBradshaw on Aug 3, 2010 10:36 AM EDT reply actions

I would still watch hockey. And would have a favorit team at some point.

In this hypothetical world hockey must have really changed so here is some of the cryteria I’d use to pick a new team:

1. Team Tradition (original six?)
2. Ability to see most games on TV
3. Ability to see some games live
4. Ability to watch farm team live.

Then I would wait until the team slumpped… I’m no bandwagon jumper.

All other things the same I’d say B’s, but god I hate them… more so then the Islanders or Devils.

Yea...

Rangers till the end

I started watching hockey in 2006 and surprisingly loved it more than watching my Yankees. Now i love the game more than football(old fav) outright but that was because of the Rangers. If that ever changed I would not watch the game and protest seriously.
BTW haha ‘islander fans cupcakes in hand’ & ‘That bruins game was a wicked pissah’ i have a good friend in boston who talks just like that funny shyt Jim, ahh its too early.

I have been a Rangers fan since I was born

that’s just what my dad made me do. I would probably invest all of my fanship into football and baseball, that’s what I did during the lockout.

I just couldn’t root for another hockey team. You can change your woman, you can change your friends, you can even leave your family but you can never leave your hockey team.

By the way … LMFAO at “creature report”

I love hockey in general, so I’d never stop watching. However, in a world without the Rangers I’d probably root for the Hawks, Leafs, or Kings seeing as I agree with Jim’s assessment of Toronto and the fact that I have always somewhat liked the Kings and Hawks since I was a kid, following Gretzky and Amonte (after he was traded from the rangers). Otherwise, I’d just focus more on the next greatest sport— Soccer. Nothing like EPL and La liga.

I'd root for which ever team Lundqvist ended up on

There’s no way I’d give up on hockey. I’ve been following the sport and worked in it for way too long to just walk away from the game.

With that said, I would follow The King no matter which NHL team he went to. Henrik is in a class all by himself. If he went to Europe, then I’d probably root for the Hawks. Not because they won recently, but because as someone said it would have to be original six team and I just can’t see myself ever liking a team from Boston….and Detroit has to be one of the worst cities I’ve ever been to.

by The Suit on Aug 3, 2010 11:11 AM EDT reply actions

To be honest, I would root for whatever team Lundqvist is on. When I grew up, my favorite player was Brian Leetch, but I was a goaltender, so I loved Mike Richter. I’m more of a fan of goaltenders than I am of players, so going with my favorite goaltender to watch: Lundqvist.

I’d end up like the grandpa in Willy Wonka in my bed 24/7 with depression. I’d take it pretty hard since the Rangers have been an obsession for me since I was a kid. The Rangers to me are what crack is to Bobby Brown. I’d still watch hockey since its my favorite sport but I would never jump on the bandwagon of another team. I would most likely watch as much hockey as possible and follow certain players but nothing could replace the Rangers.

When I’m forced to watch the Buffalo feed on MSG, which is often, I turn the sound off and put on Maloney on the Rangers site. That is when the Sabres don’t superceed the Rangers up here. luckily, the rangers are one of the last teams that would be contracted.

for me though, i’d first look at an original six team. i love tradition. second, look at ability to watch games. with centre ice, which i get anyway, it could be anyone. i would want someone though that is close enough for an occasional road trip, and still be fun city.

i find montreal’s constant pregame ceremonies pompous and they win too much, much like the yankees. (I’m also a mets fan). so they are out.

Unless Halak is a one-and-done, I don’t see them having room for him… I pray he wouldn’t go to Philly or NJ… I think I’d kill myself.

tough call

i’d also have to roll original six style

no red wings, no blackhawks (though i love the jersey), and especially no maple leafs; i can’t stand even the most laid-back toronto fan

bruins would be okay except for my intense hatred of all teams boston (although i consider bobby orr the greatest player ever and one of my faves all-time)….plus my uncle would stab me in the eye, he’s one of the old-school guys who hates boston & philly more than the devils or islanders

i’d wind up rolling with montreal, because i love the city, i love the fans (for the most part), i love the passion, i love the history, and the bell center is a pretty cool place to watch a game, especially a leafs-habs hockey night in canada matchup

true story: i was so disgusted with the hiring of bryan trottier i rooted for montreal until he was fired (as a child of the 80s that was, to me, one of the low points of this franchise in the 30 years i’ve been watching)

plus red fisher is greatness

I am personally placing a hundred-dollar bounty on the head of Tim McCracken. He's the head coach and chief punk on that Syracuse team.

by joereiter on Aug 3, 2010 3:16 PM EDT reply actions

Yes, Trottier was a horrible decision. I was 12 w/ not much knowledge of the past history (besides Gretzky, Mess, & 94 really) and my dad told me a was an Islander player and that was all I needed to instantly hate him until he left.

consider yourself lucky

i grew up in the semi-shadow of that dynasty and hated trottier, potvin, bossy, gillies smith & co. with all the anger my little heart could muster

those were tough times to be a ranger fan, especially if your roller hockey goaltender loved the islanders and pretended to be billy smith all the friggin’ time

also following a team outside their home market isn't so tough

i’m a padres fan and get all the news i need between extra innings & the net….plus jenny cavnar’s twitter feed (yum)

thank you technology

this would be hard

I would probably be a wings fan cuz I grew up loving Yzerman and Fedorov, real tough topic, I would focus some more on college hockey.. BC Eagles!

by bcranger21 on Aug 3, 2010 3:34 PM EDT reply actions

They’d probably find me wandering the corridors of some detox facility wearing my ranger jersey and no pants, and definitely tube socks. I’d probably be suffering from immense withdrawal…

I’m a Rangers fan through and through, so I’d be pretty lost without them, even if half of the time i’m bitching about them/ or their stupid contracts… I think it’s pretty safe to say NHL hockey lives and dies with the rangers as far as all the banter members are concerned… If it happened this year my team to root for just to root for anybody would probably be the Bolts… They should be a tough team this year… St. Louis, Stamkos, Lecavalier, Gagne, and, the one who is very much forgotten, Ryan Malone. Hedman should make a step forward this year as well… should be a good year down there…

by Clalicata17 on Aug 3, 2010 4:04 PM EDT reply actions

Not really a hard question since,

the Rangers go away every year around mid-April anyway(either by missing the playoffs or not getting out of the first round) so i would just cheer for some good competitive hockey like i’ve done the last decade and a half.

Hank deserves better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OOF

The Rangers folding would suck royally, but my mother was a Diehard Dodgers fan, so I would look to her for support.

I have an ex who is a diehard Isles fan (yes to spite me), and she and her family contemplate the erasure of their team as a very real possibility, though she says they try to stay in denial about it.. Wang rejected the latest proposal. Not sure where it stands at the moment. Something to do with a proposed Federal law regarding Indian gaming rights or something? I don’t know.

Def. going with the Leafs

One of my favorite fighters is there and so are a few others, and for what ever reason my mind has come up with i just like them as a second best…

I could get more love from a Cactus then you..........

I would root for the Atlanta Thrashers

Since they are the local team for me, and my wife worked for the organization, and I still get free tickets to any game I want, and great seats at that. Plus, I could watch a team develop and evetually be competetive on a yearly basis, I think they are rated 7th in terms of future prospects vs. Rangers 12. The wife is a Thrashers fan (even when they play the Rangers which pisses me off, but I do have that playoff series to hang over her head) so it would be like throwing her a bone.

by GAThingy on Aug 3, 2010 4:51 PM EDT reply actions

tough question

I’ve been thinking about it the whole time reading all the comments, and I think I would end up being a Sabres fan. My gf is a Sabres fan, so I already watch plenty of their games via Center Ice, plus having Team USA’s goalie helps. And watching Tyler Myers turn into a perennial Norris finalist would be a good time as well.

by Conway on Aug 3, 2010 6:25 PM EDT reply actions

for me its easy

i lived in toronto for 3 years. the air canada center is amazing. the leafs fans are real hockey fans, like us rangers fans. i’d probably end up dying before i see my team win a stanley cup, but my chances with the blueshirts are just as good :).

so yeah, hypothetically – if the rangers were no more i’d be rooting for the Toronto Maple Leafs. i said it…

Considering the Rangers lost the most money entering the lockout at 25-40m a year, that the announced sellouts are as phony as an Al Trautwig release and the media could care less about them in baseball’s 365 day market and there was no big fallout from Cablevision’s hockey team not playing during the lockout, there would be no problem at all if they were contracted.

NASCAR in New York city and golf tournaments got better ratings here than Ranger playoff games.

The Okposo ot winner at Msg was on last night, half the garden was cheering for the Islanders, sad Dolan directs the organ to drown out fans but all part of what makes the Cablevision Rangers worthless.

NY Americans were the true original team, the New York Islanders are the market’s true championship tradition and the corporate Knick fans who purchase many of Ranger tickets would move on to the next Msg event..

Put a baseball team store in Msg where the Rangers were and it would do far better, an the NHL would be rid of Dolan, who they should have taken the team from.

What would New York do without the Rangers, same thing they did during the lockout, not even notice.

We’ll send you some cupcakes as a going away present, don’t eat those Cablevision hot dogs.

I love it when

arguments over hockey teams go beyond the hockey team into things that no one on these boards care about.

That being said, last i checked the rangers were almost a playoff team, and the Isles were a god awful disgrace on skates.

about Ranger fans not caring about their team…..Now I have seen everything.

The Islanders won four cups almost 30 years ago, have they made the playoffs since? Don’t talk to me about Championship tradition, you might as well be talking about the Dark Ages its been so long since your team was relevant.

Bitter Islander fans always make me laugh…..go have a cupcake, fruitcake.

What are the “Islanders”? Are you perhaps referring to Nylander? I just googled “Islanders” and found nothing. Apparently you’ve been rooting for a team that doesn’t exist.

That's funny

Last time I went to a Rangers-Isles game at Nassau Coliseum (the game Chris Simon clubbed Ryan Hollweg in the head, to be specific), it was packed with around 75% Ranger fans. I walked up to the ticket window at 6:45 and still was able to get seats about 10 rows from the glass.

Hell, I went to a game there between the Islanders and Panthers and I came across THREE PEOPLE wearing Rangers jerseys.

Please send me a post card when you move to Kansas City!

by Steeeve on Aug 4, 2010 9:53 AM EDT up reply actions

You may call our sellouts “phony”, but you guys can’t even sell out the god damn mausoleum which only has 15,000 seats. The Islanders are a true disgrace to the NHL with their horrid play, terrible ownership, and just their stupidity. I mean, who signs someone for 15 years?? It’s ok, you guys will be in Kansas soon.

by Tripodi on Aug 4, 2010 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions

hey at the rate the mausoleum is going it’ll be the NHL’s first full season open-air rink.

by teknics on Aug 4, 2010 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd find a new team

It’d be like having your wife pass away, but eventually I’d have to move on. You know… for the kids. I’d probably pick a west coast team because I hate most of the east. Probably the Canucks, maybe the Kings or Sharks or Avs. I guess it would depend on how good they all are. I’d want them to be good, but I wouldnt want people thinking I was another stupid bandwagoner.

by Steeeve on Aug 4, 2010 9:56 AM EDT reply actions

I’d wouldn’t mind rooting for the Leafs. I’d also think of rooting for the Sens, Flames, or Nucks. Idk why, but I’ve always rooted for them in the playoffs when the Rangers are out or something. I just love the passion that their fans have, no matter how good or bad their team is, the fans are still there. Plus all those teams are from Canada so I could understand the passion there, but I wouldn’t mind rooting for those teams. But don’t get me wrong, the Rangers will always be #1

by Tripodi on Aug 4, 2010 3:16 PM EDT reply actions

Leafs or Aves

Rich past, knowledgable fans, and it wouldn’t make me one of those hated frontrunners

by CDXX93 on Aug 4, 2010 3:20 PM EDT reply actions

I’d go with Montreal or the Blackhawks
