Rangers News: Tim Kennedy to Sign One Year Deal with Rangers

Andrew Gross has confirmed on Twitter that Tim Kennedy, the 24 year old Forward from Buffalo, NY who also played for Buffalo last season is to sign a one-year deal with the Rangers. I also want to note that our own Nick Montemagno broke this story to us here at the Banter through an Eyewitness News report. You can see his full write-up on his website here.

For a full rundown of Kennedy (including career stats), here's a great link. I remember watching Kennedy a couple of times when the Rangers were blacked out on MSG, and what I saw was a speedy, slick, but small Winger/Center who can move the puck well. A quick look at his basic and advanced stats last year tell me that he played 3rd/4th line minutes but did relatively well for his first full-time NHL season. The Corsi numbers look solid and he had a positive GVT as well. His 26 point season (10 Goals) gave him a 0.33 PPG, just below where his average NHL PPG season should be (0.39 or 32 PPS). This shows us that there is some potential and the fact that he is young is another plus. Depending on the terms of this deal (which can't be outrageous), this is a good, young depth signing with future potential as well.

That's all for now, but I might update this more later in the afternoon.

I have to admit, I don’t know a whole lot about him, but this was a guy whose name was tossed around here earlier in the off-season. There sure is a glut at forward from where I sit. It’s going to be three to a room at Ranger camp.

yea, not quite sure where he fits in, for the sabres to buy him out they must have thought he wasnt even worth $666,666 though so that cant be a good sign. Maybe replaces betts as a 4th line center? Still not quite sure what the point is. I am guessing this ensures todd white will be in hartford…

It's impossible to tell what this means, IMO.

There are so many permutations for the 3rd/4th lines now, you basically have to wait to see what shakes out of camp.

I saw a bit of him during the regular season and postseason. Kennedy can light the lamp some. From what I can tell, he will be on left wing with one of the lower lines, or in the AHL.

You get the feeling with this that Redden, White, and (I hate to say this) possibly Avery will not be with this team.

by Ahmad Bradshaw on Aug 30, 2010 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Drury’s going to end up on the 3rd/4th because he’s the only defensive center on the current roster. Frolov most likely will be on the 2nd, and they’re not going to constantly start him in the defensive zone. So Frolov-Drury isn’t a fit.

That changes if Torts (wrongly, IMO) pairs Frolov and Gaborik together.

This is a whole other issue, but...

I think the need for multiple giant power forwards is going downhill. The new rules set up five years ago promote speed and shooting, and GM’s are finally starting to stockpile guys on offense that can do just that.

I love it because it makes Hockey as a whole better. I don’t watch pre-dominant American sports because not everyone can play in them. It’s more about being big than talented. Hockey is a good mix of will (i.e. gaining off-ice strength) and pure talent.

If you want that, watch association football. I hate how most americans completely ignore the sport and dismiss it as wimpy. american sports aren’t that tough: NFL football’s toughness is overshadowed by their being covered in a suit of armor and only playing 10-15 seconds per minute and for only half the game. As for baseball, just look at them. They’re standing still or sitting over 80 percent of the time. If you want a tough team sport, watch or play rugby or hockey. Otherwise, UFC is the way to go.

"Mes que un club"
"You're a pro or you're a noob. That's life"

by Scratch and Snif on Aug 30, 2010 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I disagree. The “suit of armor” is worn to minimize the damage that these players can inflict on each other. These football behemoths, even those 375 pounds and playing the offensive line, are in much better shape than the average person- American or otherwise.

The violence of rugby does not compare to football’s because the rules and strategy of either game is vastly different.

All of these sports and their athletes have their merits. Baseball players as a lot are probably the least athletic of most, but the the skills required to be great at certain positions (pitcher, catcher, DH, for example) don’t require that they be in the best of shape.

It’s like me being in the Corps, my two brothers are in the Air Force and Army respectively. Me calling my little airman brother a pussy because the Air Force doesn’t have to endure the physical rigors of my service, while funny, is irrelevant.

by Hoggo on Aug 30, 2010 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ll concede that the impact between two football players is slightly worse than between to rugby players, but that’s only because of the way tackles are made/avoided. There could be 3 guys tackling the same person in football, but rugby is more one on one. Not to mention the possibility of being blindsided when jumping for a catch. For those reasons, I’ll accept the need for padding. However, the fact that they stop so often and play so little isn’t excusable. I also hate that going out of bounds or being tackled without fumbling doesn’t lead to a turnover. Baseball, like Golf, requires lots of skill but not so much athleticism. IMO, that makes it a game, not a sport.
Also, serving in the military yields the risk of death or life changing injury. Sports, not so much. There isn’t a huge difference between the bravery of different military branches because dying with great physical endurance isn’t very different from dying with piloting skills.

wow, do you even play football at any level? I am a hockey player that has played football for many years in the past, and for you to even imply that the toughness necessary to be in the NFL is “overshadowed” or they are “not really that tough” is patently absurd. Football taking an immense amount of toughness to play is not an opinion, it is a fact (obviously outside kicker/punter). To debate it makes me automatically lose respect for you

by Ahmad Bradshaw on Aug 30, 2010 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh well, I've lost the respect of many people many times.

Anyone can be tough for 5 minutes a game. In rugby, you have to be tough for two 30-35 minute halves of playing BOTH offense and defense, where the only breaks you get are for the 10 second “melées”(not sure of english translation) that happen about once every 2 or 3 minutes, and the few seconds you’re on the ground clasping your head and nuts so that you don’t get cleated while the players above you are muscling eachother out of the way to pry the ball out. It’s basically what linebackers do as soon as the QBs hikes the ball, except it’s happening over your head. I’d also question the toughness of anyone who starts cheering the minute they land a tackle, or who run out of bounds to avoid one.
I love playing football because I’m a huge fan of full contact sports. It’s also one of the few sports I can easily keep up with, even with my shitty stamina. What annoys me is how people try to pass it off as the “manly man man” sport.

really? ANYONE can be that tough? ANYONE can play in the NFL? And for some reason celebrating is a deterrence against toughness? Really? More likely the product of a testosterone filled sport that people are to insane proportions to play at that kind of level. Think of it of the unloading of bundled up passion, desire, and competitiveness.
Once again, all I can say is WOW

by Ahmad Bradshaw on Aug 30, 2010 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn’t say anyone can play in the NFL, that requires hours and hours of skill and practice. Toughness doesn’t have to do with that. I was exaggerating when I said anyone can be that tough, but I’d say that most people can. If you’re playing with people around your size, give or take 30-40 pounds and 4 inches, it’s not hard to be tough. You shouldn’t be celebrating every time you do your job right. A touchdown fine, because it’s a difficult and long effort, but tackles happen too frequently to be celebrating.

You also get to take sometimes minutes at a time off during the course of a Rugby game when the action isn't near you.

Bottom line is, don’t know the toughness of men that can literally snap you in half, and don’t question the skill of men who play a sport you couldn’t even consider playing at their level.

You’re not going to convince this gent [and me] that guys like David Wells, Prince & Cecil Fielder, Rich Garces, CC Sabbathia… are athletic. They’re just not. Talented, yes. Physical, yes [in all sorts of dimensions]. But athletic, a resounding no.

Here’s a gallery of unathletic, but mostly very talented and some even great baseball players:

230 pound left fielder barreling down on you at home plate? First of all, that happens to ONE player, the catcher, like twice a game at most. Also, we’re talking about football and rugby, where you take shots from 230-330 pound guys for a living. Baseball should not be in this conversation.

Did you really just basically call football a whimpy sport? Lol

Hilarious as well that you call foot all pads a coat of armor. You must not have played football outside of two hand touch. Shoulder pads are almost equiviliant to hockeys minus the hard plastic. They wear thigh pads as thin as a half inch, o yea and a helmet that can induce comas on any given hit. I’m not even sure where you come from if your hearing people sAy hockeys a whimpey sport, because people i know and talk to that don’t even like hockey say I don’t get the sport, but it’s fast hard and physical which makes it fun to watch. For the most part I don’t really jump down peoples throats and comment on people opinions But for someone who played both sports all his life you cannot even start to make an argument that it’s not that tough. Put on football pads and get on the field with me and I’ll show you it’s far from not being a tough sport.

by klh2009 on Aug 30, 2010 11:04 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Never said football is wimpy, but it's not as tough as people make it out to be

I’ve never heard people say hockey is wimpy, but I almost always hear people saying that football is a thousand times tougher. Hockey players warrant the pads because they are gliding around on blades and a surface as hard as concrete.
I’ve been tackled enough times to know what a collision feels like. Getting hit full speed, head on against guys a hundred pounds heavier and half a foot taller than me hurts, but not enough for helmets and shoulder pads. Also, the chance of getting paralyzed on a tackle is very slim unless you torpedo into someone or contort yourself bizarrely. Either way, here is my point:
Football is tough, but it’s not as hard and tough as people claim it is.

what are you talking about bro?

he said on the internet that he is so tough he can take a hit from a 100 pound heavier man without pads, head on. We know people on the internet don’t lie.

Seriously, I’d love to see this. Let’s make it into a fundraiser. 50 bucks a head, we all get together, we have the manliest of all men mr. scratch and snif stand there, and we’ll have bart scott get a full head of steam and take his best shot at you. Then you can tell us about how manly you are and how taking head on hits from men 100 pounds heavier then you is just another walk in the park.

by dookiehead on Aug 31, 2010 1:30 AM EDT up reply actions

I played rugby for the past 4 years. This last year I was 5-10 and 170 at my peak, which is largely unimpressive on the field. The guys I played against ranged from 5-5, 130 (scrum halves mostly) to 6-6, 280. So yes, I’ve been hit by huge guys. If I’m getting paid to take a hit from Bart Scott, fuck year. I know how to not get concussed off a tackle. I didn’t say it was a walk in the park. Sometimes it hurts, sometimes not.. Depending on how you get hit, it can cause severe injuries. But it is NOT a huge fucking deal.
Also, this “he’s talking big on the internet” BS. even though I can’t get physically hurt, my self respect is still on the line. I’m speaking from a place of truth here, don’t dismiss my arguments as fluff. If you don’t want to be involved, so be it, but don’t put down the opinions of others.

The Sabres offered him at least 800k (or 850k), the problem wasn’t the money though, its that he wanted a one-way and the sabres wanted a two-way.

Horrible on face-offs

397 taken last year and a win rate of 33.5%.

If he’s going to play center, better get a winger who can take draws to play with him.

by NTB on Aug 30, 2010 2:18 PM EDT reply actions

He’s not a center. The Sabres just didn’t have any centers.

certainly with that percentage he can not be trusted in a defensive role. Truly putrid percentage. Even though Boyle was pretty horrendous at that too. Where is Betts? Not sure what they were thinking about with that one, forces them to waste dru in the role that betts could handle quite well…..

by Ahmad Bradshaw on Aug 30, 2010 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Betts was in Philly last year. It was bitter sweet, I was glad seeing the guy become a recognized 4th line center and make it to the finals, but we let him go and he went to Philly. Idk if he’s still there though

he is, he got an extension last season, i was just remarking about the absurdity in letting him go

by Ahmad Bradshaw on Aug 30, 2010 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions

It was not necessarily absurd to let Betts go. To let Betts go and not fill his role with a player of equal ability was absurd.

But at the time, I think getting Betts would’ve been great, he did everything we asked him to do with heart and he did it exceptionally well. He was one of the main reasons our PK was outstanding that year.

Yes, that was the message I was trying to convey, and if you are looking for basically a clone of Betts himself I see no reason not to just resign Betts. He would have obviously loved to be wanted back, as he didnt even have a guarenteed contract going to training camp. The absurdity of that decision has indirectly screwed Drury.

by Ahmad Bradshaw on Aug 30, 2010 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, to be fair, Boyle was supposed to be Betts plus more offense. Defensively, Boyle is fairly sound, if unspectacular. He was offensively pitiful though and atrocious on the dot, and the plan backfired.

yes most importantly atrocious on the dot. For that reason alone he can not be trusted with D-zone draws, draws so key for a 4th liner providing little offense. Not to mention we also had to give up a 3rd round pick to get him…..

by Ahmad Bradshaw on Aug 30, 2010 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Surely Gaustad and Roy could’ve been used to take some of those instead of Kennedy. I know those two were already pushed hard, but 33.5% is atrocious.

He's a long shot to have any positive impact

I’ve said it plenty before, nothing good comes from Buffalo. Look at our track record with former Sabres. The last decent player to come east on the Empire Line was 67 games of Pat Lafontaine over 10 years ago.

Not much good comes from Buffalo, period.

Wings

Thats about it… ok…
So we trade Redden to Salavat Yulaev Ufa for Dmitri Kalinin and some borscht.

Nothing says powerplay like strobe lights and video game music.

Anyone know if Kennedy did much work on the PK? That would make him a more viable 4th liner…

by Ahmad Bradshaw on Aug 30, 2010 3:00 PM EDT reply actions

11:23 in PK time last year. So no.

The PK isn’t going to change much anyway…Drury-Callahan, Dubinsky-Anisimov are your likely top 4. (AA replacing Boyle). Gaborik, Frolov, and White will play the supporting roles (assuming White is here). It’s possible Frolov cracks the top 4, but I don’t think he’ll be used that way.

cant see white being with the Rangers. And i really am not sure what they got connolly for at this point. Is he a quality defensive forward? Cause thats the only role i could see him playing…

I wish they got Tim Connolly….

MATTEAU!!!!! MATTEAU!!!!!!! MATTEAU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by stonecoldcory on Aug 30, 2010 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Kennedy, not Connolly, and I’m not sure either. If it is true that he got a 1-way deal, however, then it’s a really strange signing. He’s clearly not a center, and they already have Frolov-Dubinsky-Avery-Boogaard on the LW, all of whom seemingly have roster spots.

I typically wouldn’t have an issue…a 24 year old with 25 points for $550k is pretty good value. Without a roster spot, it seems like a waste.

he would need to pass through waivers first…..
and i am sure there are things more value than paying someone 550K to play in the AHL

The official announcement

Ranters add free agent Tim Kennedy

Apparently the Rangers are hoping to strike lightning on the cheap. Who knows – it just might work.

"Ranters"

Is the general reaction when this team makes a move. Fantastic typo.

I have to say WTF?

A trade has to be coming because where is Boyle, MZA, Kennedy, and White going to play? besides the obvious answer which is hartford but…
I think MZA was promised a chance with the big team.
White was acquired to be a healthy scratch for when Boogie sits.
Avery is too good(2mil) to sit.
Kennedy one way contract? scratch.
Boyle ‘ahem’ 3rd round waste but can be scratched.
Ohhh did I mention that Torts doesn’t like to carry extra players.
Run that through Cap geek and see where we sit (include Staal 3.5, guessing).
Wait Wait can the impossible be possible? (#6) lets hope.
