Rangers Analysis: What if Redden Played Well?
Just something quick for you hockey deprived Ranger fans to discuss on this beautiful Sunday. Our good friend Larry Brooks updated his Slap Shots blog this morning - which means controversy galore - and of course presented readers with a thought provoking situation. I quoted portions of his story below.
There's no doubt the plan calls for Redden to be waived at some point during camp so his $6.5 million albatross of a cap hit can be removed from the ledger when the season commences, no doubt whatsoever.
And what if Redden, who knows his NHL career is on the line here, who knows that if he is waived through the league in September he will never get back, what if Redden plays assertive, sharp hockey beginning with the first scrimmage and maintains his level? What if Redden outplays just about every defenseman in camp?
Then the Rangers will be in a state of severe stress. Then, incorporating that $6.5 million onto the season cap would mean that Sather would have to slash the roster in order to leave enough space to match on Staal, who at that point would become a very inviting target for an offer sheet.

If Redden does make the team, you only need to shed enough salary to sign Staal. White and McDonagh instead of Gilroy saves $3.25m, that should be enough, and leaves us the $500k or so we have now. Needing more than that means MZA’s 900k gets sent down (ignoring the bonus). After than, Sauer instead of McDonagh saves another $375k.
That’s really the only money to be trimmed, so yes, Redden waking up would be a problem.

If you want to be technical
Germany began the war by invading Belgium, Luxembourg, and France… The assassination is precursor to the war which sparked controversy, the war itself was started with the Invasion of Belgium, Luxembourg, and France with the subsequent…
It was a joke… relax it’s 2010 not 1930
well this is a true point.
although it was just germans than, not nazis
if were being technical. but yeah everyone calm down
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
Yeah
German, not the Nazi power, which rose to power thanks to the constrictions placed on Germany by the Allied powers at the end of the first World War.

Again, taking a joke way to far… It was a joke, if I wanted to delve into the microcosms of the World Wars I’m fully capable of it… History Major… It was just a simple joke… which for some reason had to escalate to a political argument… live and let go…
Funny cause Im a history major as well and I would feel like an idiot saying something like the Nazi’s started two world wars. lol

Long time lurker here. First , it seems to me that the odds of Redden being the best D-man on the team at this point in his career are about the same as Boogard being the leading scorer. Does anyone seriously think that he’ll be better than Staal, MDZ, McD, or even Girardi? This assumes he has been lacking only motivation.
Next, even if his game were to be resurrected, some (deluded) GM might be impressed enough take a chance and claim him off waivers or trade for him and take the cap problem off the Rangers’ hands. That would be the dream scenario. Most likely he is getting waived through to Hartford. Let’s be realistic, folks, one way or the other, he’s gone.
Welcome to the discussion

Exactly
If he does well, it means we can actually move him. Maybe we set him loose on the isles.

We're talking about WADE Redden, right?
Assertive, sharp hockey? Maintain that level?!
Sorry, does not compute.
Glutton For Punishment Since 1979
Never know AZ…if you were Wade Redden and all signs pointed to you being sent to the minors after well a pretty decent NHL career, wouldn’t you try to give it all you got so that would not happen? Just saying, the guy has his pride on the line.
Nahhh, probably not… if I were Wade Redden I’d just continue to play indifferent, lazy, uninspired hockey and collect my undeserved riches while frustrating every Ranger fan on the planet… Seriously though, if Redden can maintain any level of intensity, competitiveness and defensive competency for more than 3 shifts in a row (never mind 3 games in a row)… well then I will consider that “Miracle on Ice Part II”
BTW, I freely admit it – I’m jealous of the guy. I wish I could be that bad at my job and make $6.5 million a year. Maybe, deep down inside, that’s what really pisses me off.

a game or two after Brookes referred to him as “Golden Gloves” Redden… during a line scrap against Montreal he dropped the gloves with with Benoit Pouliot (nobody to be feared), and I’d have to say at best it was a tie.
hockeyfights has Pouliot at 65.4% winner.

2 more months people
Tomorrow is Aug 9th which means we only have two more months until opening night in Buffalo. two more months >holy crap I’m startin to itch. Redden will go down. No more chances. Turn the page. Caput. Finis. Shit, still two more months. How about performance inhancing drugs in the NHL? Worth discussing? What’s the testing policy?
Brodeur uses them
Just kidding. Not worth discussing right now. We’re talking about Redden now haha

Too late...
I think he’s used his 9 lives up. I don’t think it matters how well he plays in camp, Slats and the rest of us have seen his regular seasons performance for toooooooooo long to think about moving forward with Redden.
Send him down…

What a world we live in, Ranger fans, where we have to worry about a player playing well out of camp.

We've seen enough
One good camp doesn’t make up for seasons of laziness. If he can turn it around, good for him, maybe he can find himself a new home somewhere.
The rangers have a good amount of potential rookies I think, and it seems that the rangers have a bulk of both forwards and defensemen at this point. I would love to see them figure out how to sign Staal WITHOUT dumping Redden, see what Redden has in camp and then dump him regardless.
It’s time for Sather to fix his mistakes. His head has been called for! He fixed the Gomez signing in a very nice way. Drury is still a mistake to me at this point… I had high hopes for him, but he can turn it around he has another year in my eyes.
Redden though has to go and he has to go now. If they can take him off the books and use that money wisely…. even if that means just leaving it alone to preserve the future of the organization…. this Redden mistake would be taken care of and he’d be one step closer to saving his job, or at least gain some respect back from us!
I think Redden is basically done, unless he can hit like Pronger, have a slap shot thats as hard as Adrian Aucoin’s and can lead a rush like Leetch. Even if he does well, I can see them possibly moving Rozi into the minors. It all depends on what they sign Staal for. Thats the key to what will happen.

Exactly this is a non-issue
Redden had his chance. Many of them. Playing well in camp doesn’t erase what he’s done so far. His chance came and went and he can’t make it back anymore.

redden and roszival
just waive redden and roszival and go young, saves the rangers nearly 12 mil and then we can sign staal to a long term contract and bring the young kids up to learn. better to go young than to stay with vets who arent proving their worth to the team!
LOLZ
lol redden playing well then i would have seen it all
How Did Redden Get That?
6.5 million reasons, brother! Sheesh!
Redden
will make the team.
He is making a lot of money, everyone needs to realize that dumping that contract is not going to be an easy decision.
I hope Redden improves – it’s not like we haven’t seen veterans improve, even at his age.
Wade???
Is that you?

Even if Redden plays well he’s lost his shot, being a lazy f*** for the last 2 years is reason enough he should be sent down no matter what he does in training camp this year.
i don’t care if redden plays well in camp. we’ve given him more than enough chances to just play solid stay at home defense, and at $6.5m he hasn’t even been able to provide that much. i mean there really is nothing that annoys me more than that name right now. just bury him in Hartford so we never have to hear his name again.
Once again, Brooks misses the point completely. It doesnt matter if he proves himself to be one of the top 2 or 3 defensemen in the NYR training camp – even putting aside the fact that training camp means almost nothing in a league where opening night lineups are 95% set entering camp. The point is that Redden would have to play so well that he’d be considered one of the top 6 defensemen in the entire league…which is where his cap hit places him. He won’t do that, so he needs to be gone.
Glen Sather is a Hockey Genius.

WE NEED TO KEEP STAAL. HE LONGER REACH, NOT SCARED TO FIGHT.BODY-CHECKS WELL AND CAN PASS AND SHOOT.REDDEN CAN’T DO THAT.
Brooks is just PO'ed
That he will have one less thing to bust Torts on after games and less ammo to write about in his daily rag.

Its a brooks article
nothing but negative crap,he never,NEVER writes anything remotely positive. It’s great he’s not like michaletti (s?) and bowing to the man,but come on!! hes borderline filthy fan.I read his article regularly and its always the same, i read it because he does get good inside info from time to time, but i do read it knowing hes a bitter old woman.
all those things are possible, just like i might possibly have a growth spurt at 39 and hit 5’6.
Si Vis Pacum Parabellum
i for one, think Redden is on some sort of narcotic. look @ the pictures of when he first signed with NYR compared to the most recent. he looks horrible. He’s much thinner and his face is drawn out and hollow. something is going on there.
here, look at this most recent interview with Redden. he looks awful.
During the Ottawa days
There were rumors of Redden and Emery powdering their noses at local bars after games and during the offseason. This lead to the start of Emery s demise in Ottawa.

on a side note, here’s another opinion on this article (brooks’ article):
“New York Rangers: Holy hell does Larry Brooks raise an interesting point — What if Wade Redden(notes) plays so well that they can’t in good conscience demo… hahaha just kidding, of course he’s going to be awful and get sent to the minors.”
I don't care if Redden plays like Chris Chelios
He is outta here. We are going to keep him if he plays well over a couple of weeks of camp, when he has been a bust over the duration of his contact to date? Brooks’ premise is kind of silly.
by YanksGiantsRangersKnicks on Aug 9, 2010 2:52 PM EDT reply actions
is it silly? if the Rangers really do want to try to make the playoffs this year, they might have to weigh having him on the roster versus a less defensively-sound kid
It is extremely silly
Let’s don’t have this “playoffs or bust” conversation again. If we make the playoffs, we are talking a low seed… not worth it. Conversely, if we keep his albatross salary and have to cut others to fit him… that is a joke, unless they can get another high-salary bust out of here. In that case, no problem.

Waive Redden Fund
If every Ranger fan gave $1 to the waive Redden fund, we could collect his $6.5 million, and Dolan would have no chance to accept our terms!!!!
