Rangers Analysis: What if Redden Played Well?

Just something quick for you hockey deprived Ranger fans to discuss on this beautiful Sunday. Our good friend Larry Brooks updated his Slap Shots blog this morning - which means controversy galore - and of course presented readers with a thought provoking situation. I quoted portions of his story below.

There's no doubt the plan calls for Redden to be waived at some point during camp so his $6.5 million albatross of a cap hit can be removed from the ledger when the season commences, no doubt whatsoever.

And what if Redden, who knows his NHL career is on the line here, who knows that if he is waived through the league in September he will never get back, what if Redden plays assertive, sharp hockey beginning with the first scrimmage and maintains his level? What if Redden outplays just about every defenseman in camp?

Then the Rangers will be in a state of severe stress. Then, incorporating that $6.5 million onto the season cap would mean that Sather would have to slash the roster in order to leave enough space to match on Staal, who at that point would become a very inviting target for an offer sheet.

The chances off Redden coming out and impressing the coaching staff as Larry suggests in his hypothetical situation, I think, are quite slim. Although you never know what an athlete can pull out of his magical hat when he is aware his career is on very thin ice.

With that being said, if Redden did happen to surprise and was one of the top defensemen in camp, the Rangers will be in a large hole. GM Glen Sather has built the team this summer around the fact that Redden and his $6.5 million cap hit will be waived and buried in Hartford. But if he happens to make a case to stay in the lineup, Slats will be forced to do some serious salary cutting. That means Gilroy will not make the team, McDonagh will not make the team. It would be a mess to say the least.

What are your thoughts?

If Redden does make the team, you only need to shed enough salary to sign Staal. White and McDonagh instead of Gilroy saves $3.25m, that should be enough, and leaves us the $500k or so we have now. Needing more than that means MZA’s 900k gets sent down (ignoring the bonus). After than, Sauer instead of McDonagh saves another $375k.

That’s really the only money to be trimmed, so yes, Redden waking up would be a problem.

Long time lurker here. First , it seems to me that the odds of Redden being the best D-man on the team at this point in his career are about the same as Boogard being the leading scorer. Does anyone seriously think that he’ll be better than Staal, MDZ, McD, or even Girardi? This assumes he has been lacking only motivation.
Next, even if his game were to be resurrected, some (deluded) GM might be impressed enough take a chance and claim him off waivers or trade for him and take the cap problem off the Rangers’ hands. That would be the dream scenario. Most likely he is getting waived through to Hartford. Let’s be realistic, folks, one way or the other, he’s gone.

Never know AZ…if you were Wade Redden and all signs pointed to you being sent to the minors after well a pretty decent NHL career, wouldn’t you try to give it all you got so that would not happen? Just saying, the guy has his pride on the line.

Nahhh, probably not… if I were Wade Redden I’d just continue to play indifferent, lazy, uninspired hockey and collect my undeserved riches while frustrating every Ranger fan on the planet… Seriously though, if Redden can maintain any level of intensity, competitiveness and defensive competency for more than 3 shifts in a row (never mind 3 games in a row)… well then I will consider that “Miracle on Ice Part II”
BTW, I freely admit it – I’m jealous of the guy. I wish I could be that bad at my job and make $6.5 million a year. Maybe, deep down inside, that’s what really pisses me off.

Redden’s response wasn’t so bad there. He was slow to take the gloves off, but he came in to Lisin’s defense right away and was the aggressor in that fight. I don’t know how Pouliot gets the win. Neither landed much of anything and pulling someone to the ice does not equal a win.

We've seen enough

One good camp doesn’t make up for seasons of laziness. If he can turn it around, good for him, maybe he can find himself a new home somewhere.

The rangers have a good amount of potential rookies I think, and it seems that the rangers have a bulk of both forwards and defensemen at this point. I would love to see them figure out how to sign Staal WITHOUT dumping Redden, see what Redden has in camp and then dump him regardless.

It’s time for Sather to fix his mistakes. His head has been called for! He fixed the Gomez signing in a very nice way. Drury is still a mistake to me at this point… I had high hopes for him, but he can turn it around he has another year in my eyes.

Redden though has to go and he has to go now. If they can take him off the books and use that money wisely…. even if that means just leaving it alone to preserve the future of the organization…. this Redden mistake would be taken care of and he’d be one step closer to saving his job, or at least gain some respect back from us!

by robstones on Aug 8, 2010 1:05 PM EDT reply actions

I think Redden is basically done, unless he can hit like Pronger, have a slap shot thats as hard as Adrian Aucoin’s and can lead a rush like Leetch. Even if he does well, I can see them possibly moving Rozi into the minors. It all depends on what they sign Staal for. Thats the key to what will happen.

by Beukeboom hockey on Aug 8, 2010 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

why do we all neglect other salaries that could be moved to make room for staal? gilroy, white, mza can all be sent down to clear enough space. there is no chance in hell of rozsival playing in the AHL. He is a top 4 defenseman in the NHL.

by dar9898 on Aug 8, 2010 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly this is a non-issue

Redden had his chance. Many of them. Playing well in camp doesn’t erase what he’s done so far. His chance came and went and he can’t make it back anymore.

just waive redden and roszival and go young, saves the rangers nearly 12 mil and then we can sign staal to a long term contract and bring the young kids up to learn. better to go young than to stay with vets who arent proving their worth to the team!

Even if Redden plays well he’s lost his shot, being a lazy f*** for the last 2 years is reason enough he should be sent down no matter what he does in training camp this year.

by CrazyRangerFan on Aug 8, 2010 5:37 PM EDT reply actions

i don’t care if redden plays well in camp. we’ve given him more than enough chances to just play solid stay at home defense, and at $6.5m he hasn’t even been able to provide that much. i mean there really is nothing that annoys me more than that name right now. just bury him in Hartford so we never have to hear his name again.

by #17ToTheRafters on Aug 8, 2010 6:10 PM EDT reply actions

Once again, Brooks misses the point completely. It doesnt matter if he proves himself to be one of the top 2 or 3 defensemen in the NYR training camp – even putting aside the fact that training camp means almost nothing in a league where opening night lineups are 95% set entering camp. The point is that Redden would have to play so well that he’d be considered one of the top 6 defensemen in the entire league…which is where his cap hit places him. He won’t do that, so he needs to be gone.

I don't care if Redden plays like Chris Chelios

He is outta here. We are going to keep him if he plays well over a couple of weeks of camp, when he has been a bust over the duration of his contact to date? Brooks’ premise is kind of silly.

by YanksGiantsRangersKnicks on Aug 9, 2010 2:52 PM EDT reply actions

Let’s don’t have this “playoffs or bust” conversation again. If we make the playoffs, we are talking a low seed… not worth it.
