Rangers News: Marc Staal Re-signs with Rangers
Apparently Bob McKenzie from TSN is Tweeting that Marc Staal and the Rangers have come to terms on a 5 yr, $3.975M deal, meaning Staal will be there for the start of training camp.
As joereiter said in his Fan Post, "Everyone can breathe easy"
I would argue that being a Ranger fan means never breathing easy, but for today we will roll with it.
Congratulations to Marc, and props to the Rangers for not letting this linger into camp.

This is an amazing deal
whatever Sather did, it worked, because to get Staal for under $4 million … Never in my wildest imagination did I Imagine that.

tell that to nhl digest, just had a twitter debate when they opined staal got 'too much'
my response:
@nhldigest ok zbynek michalek 5 yr/20 mil vs. 5yr/19.8 for staal or volchenkov 6 yr/25 mil staal younger with upside very comparable deal
"You can be a lion maybe once in your life. If you don't make this deal, you're a

Comparable…but Michalek and Volchenkov were UFAs..they’re expected to get much more than a RFA.
While I wouldn’t argue he got “too much,” he got his UFA value as an RFA, which is impressive.

Considering it’s a mostly RFA deal, it’s a pretty staggering amount. It’s roughly the equivalent of saying he’s worth $5.85m as a UFA. Without any PP numbers, that’s a pretty generous idea.
That’s a pretty solid number for our #1 D-man though.

Oh, I’m sure that’s right, or he’d have signed ages ago. Rumors were that Staal didn’t want to give up his UFA years..to get him for that length, Sather had to concede somewhere.
I’d have liked a 6 year deal for that rate, but it’s fine as is.

does the new rules on contracts explain why it is 5 and not 6? if it had gone 6, isnt it the average of the 5 highest salary years that is the cap hit?
by Michael Gleich on Sep 15, 2010 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions
When did that happen? I thought the new rules only related to 40+ age deals.

i wasnt positive on that, hence asking. just the 40+ and the rules on long term deals extending past 35.
so why did sather imo overpay for only getting 1 year of FA. not saying the overall hit is an overpay, but 5.45 mil in the 1 FA year is above market value for the package staal has provided. that is duncan keith money.

Don’t know if you saw, but Gabe @ BTN seems to still think the deal is a steal (though he got the # of UFA years wrong)
Marc Staal mails the Rangers a check for about $10M
Five years, $19.875M – including two UFA years and no NMC/NTC? The Rangers got one hell of a deal for a guy who could match up against the other team’s stars when he was still 21 years old.

yea, but doesnt he correct in the comments saying just 1 year. if it was 2 years, it’s a great deal, and overall it is still very good, just think he needlessly overpaid on paper for the last year unless it is just structured to look that way and staal wouldnt have taken the other salaries without the last one bumping the avg.

Slats should have just brought Booger in the room with him
Staal would have signed a career deal at the league minimum just to avoid the possibility of any chance of a physical confrontation.
Even better, Slats should have hired Semin as chief negotiator. Staal would have soiled his trousers and offered to play for the league minimum and drive the zamboni for free.

Sather you've outdone yourself
I am absolutely thrilled about this deal, I remember some predictions thinking Staal would be anywhere from the 4.5-5.5 mill range or even higher than that. I am in disbelief… like Jim said Sather really put together a solid offseason so far (other than overpaying Boogaard). Congrats to Marc Staal, and props to the Rangers front office for getting the deal done!

MDZ scored 9 as a rookie
Staal was playing his 3rd full season as a pro. Playing on the 2nd unit isn’t really my idea of helping the PP. Staal needs to work on getting his shot off harder and faster and increasing his footspeed and size so he can hold the blue line before I’d think of him as a PP candidate.
by BuckarooClub on Sep 15, 2010 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions
Maybe RangerSmurf can help me out with this
But I have to imagine that DZ was placed on the PP significantly more than Staal ever was during any of his 3 years.
Someone is going to have to play on the 2nd PP unit anyways. Plus, I tend to think that the biggest determinant to last year’s modest improvement on the PP was Gaborik.
by MyFavBaseballSquadron on Sep 15, 2010 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions
You don't need stats to tell you
Our offense has been hurting since Staal has been here. Anyone, with the slightest offensive inkling, has been given a shot to help the PP and scoring in general. It’s not like MDZ got that PP time cause Torts is banging his sister. MDZ actually showed he could contribute offensively. MDZ can start a breakout, carry the puck, and makes an effort to hold the blueline.
by BuckarooClub on Sep 15, 2010 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions
BTW - I'm not blaming our offensive woes on Staal
Just pointing out that “PP defenseman” is a job that he’s had plenty of time to apply for.
by BuckarooClub on Sep 15, 2010 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions
He's had time to apply, but his application hasn't exactly been reviewed yet.
His first year, Rozsival, Girardi, Mara and Tyutin were all given 130 minutes+, Staal got 27. I don’t have an active memory of this, but I would guess that 27 was alot of end of PP and/or 2nd unit minutes where Renney was matching up for the next shift.
Second year, Redden, Rozsival, Girardi, and Mara were given 188+ minutes each, Staal got 43.
Last year, I think everyone can remember that few on this team got a shot on PP1 besides MDZ. Only Rozsival and Gilroy got more than 100 minutes.
That doesn’t really defend the 1 point in 120 minutes, but to say he’s been given a chance isn’t really true. Thus far in his career, he’s been a defensive d-man. Last year he started to show the offense (at least early, his offense slowed late in the year). I don’t think he does anything this year in terms of breaking on to the PP, but I do see it coming.

Yes..Staal still provided 52 minutes of 0 point hockey on the PP last year though. I can defend Staal’s offensive game pretty easily..but I can’t defend his production on the PP, it hasn’t been good ( 1 pt in 120 minutes)
Then again, he doubled his offensive production at ES last year, and he’s still only 23, so it’s possible that part of his game will come around. It’s just not there yet.

I hate to say it...
But Sather has really impressed me this off-season (except for overpaying for Boogeyman), and I wouldn’t be surprised if Torts has had a lot to do with it. We haven’t made any splashy signings other than Frolov (which was a very good deal in my opinion), and Sather seems to be giving into the idea of working with what we’ve got and developing the youth. I think this is a great signing for us (even though it’s a bit pricey for a RFA) and will keep our #1 Dmen happy for 5 years.
Nice job Glen, for once I don’t want to kick you in the face.

But that’s at least partly because CapGeek has all players with ‘NHL’ experience that have been signed on the roster/eating up cap. 15 forwards, and 7 d-men including Dreaden.
They’ll be 2mm under the cap by the time the season starts, and that’s if they keep White on the roster – closer to 5mm if they don’t keep him – and as usual presuming that Dreaden gets Dumped.
i would project MZA, Redden and Boyle all off to start the year and either a tryout or McD to be up on D. probably looking at about 3-4 mil in space when it shakes out. not sure gilroy is a lock on a spot either which would be another 1.75

in that he is actually an accomplished NHL player. It’s not like he had one good year last year, and it happened to be his first year in the NHL.

Glad to see the inevitable finally happened. Staal was never leaving and the Rangers were never not going to sign him. Even if this lasted longer, Torts learned his lesson on how to handle a player that’s holding out after Dubinsky’s holdout last offseason.
These holdouts by very young RFAs are pretty much the standard operating procedure around the league. Look at Dallas and Anaheim, they have young talent going through the same situation.
